When Should You SHUT DOWN Your Mac? (it might surprise you)

  • How often should you shut down or restart your Mac? Should you let it sleep instead? In this video I explore this topic in greater detail and also give my opinion on why you should NOT shut down your Mac every time you are finished using it!
    Your Mac performs a number of beneficial tasks and processes while it sleeps, and if you prevent this from happening, you may find your Mac's performance may suffer. I personally very rarely shut down my own M1 MacBook Air, and I'll share with you my reasoning.

  • @RWBHere
    @RWBHere Před rokem +217

    You're dead right about Macs running routine maintenance tasks during idle periods. Leaving them turned on does no harm, unless you're worried about your electricity bill. With that in mind, I bought an iMac from Apple's Refurbishment and Clearance Store for significantly less than the usual Apple Store price, which ran almost 24/7/365 for over ten years without any serious issues apart from a little more dust inside the case.
    In that time it was turned off fully no more than a few dozen times. Intentional reboots were done only when a new OS version was installed, and on only 5 occasions when a third party app caused a problem. There were also about 3 power outages during that period. It was used for many purposes, including work, TV via a USB dongle (we never had a TV), running SDR apps, testing beta software, Virtual Machines running XP, Linux, BSD and more, plus working for several years as a multimedia server.
    It was then given to a friend who ran an unsupported version of MacOS until a few days ago.The computer will come back to me soon, and then it will be used to run Linux for a few more years. It might even outlast me!
    So it has been worked hard throughout its life with no worries whatsoever. Use your Mac, and use it hard. It can take it.

    For newer macs, sure. As a DJ, I have an old 2011 MBP that I only use during gigs, so it doesn't make sense for me to leave it on sleep mode since it will go several days to a week without being used and by the time I turn it on, there's no battery power left (battery was changed a couple years ago). It's better for me to shut it down and turn it on later where I would still have 99% battery life when I start the next gig. Though in the first 5-6 years I rarely shut that thing down and it was used daily.

    @MrAstygmatyk Před rokem +38

    The advice is reasonable and applies as well to Win and Linux based systems. A shutdown is unnecessary unless a system reset is required because of an error. However, you should watch out for one specific scenario. As mentioned, unless a system is shutdown it will perform various maintenance tasks. Nothing special here, unless the machine is both unplugged (as recommended by this video) AND a system update is initialized. If the computer is short on battery power and unable to complete the whole update process, then the system may get ruined and become unrecoverable. If there is not enough battery power to complete other maintenance tasks, such as file re-indexing, the system will detect the situation, close all files to prevent damage to file system and only then shut down.
    In other words, always make sure the battery can sustain a system update before you put it to sleep. Or turn off the automatic update in system set-up.

    1. Could you touch on tools like AlDente to limit the maximum charge of your battery? I'm using my MBA with a USB-C monitor that also charges it, so in order to not have it on 100% all the time, I'm running AlDente to keep it at max of 70%.
    2. I don't shut down or restart my MacBook Air except for system updates and that's been perfectly fine. However, I have been shutting down my work iMac each day since I'm working from home and have to pay for electricity myself. But I just looked at sleep power consumption of the iMac 5K and it seems negligible, so I might as well put it to sleep instead and save some time each morning when I start work. 🤔 It might even go as far as saving electricity since the booting and shutting it down every day might take more electricity than having it sleep. 😂

      It's the same as with all lithium-ion battery powered devices. Charges lower than 20% and higher than 80% (as a rule of thumb) cause chemical reactions that cannot be undone in the battery, causing a lower lifetime. Therefore, a lot of devices (such as my HP laptop) have a setting to make charging stop at 80% so you can leave it on the charger while working. That is ultimately the perfect option because it also eliminates the charging/discharging between 20 and 80 percent, although this causes less degradation than the aforementioned chemical reactions.
      I think there might be software available for Macs that also makes charging stop around 80%. I'm quite surprised that Apple doesn't include that option natively.

      Your battery wears out every time it expands (charging on AC) and contracts (discharging unplugged). Every lithium ion battery has a finite life span measured in charge cycles. According to Apple, a charge cycle is equal to 100 percent of the battery capacity being discharged. This definition doesn't just mean when the battery reach from 100 percent to 0 percent; it can start from any percentage. For example your battery can start at 75 percent and reach 0 then charged back to 100 percent and 25 percent of that 100 can be counted towards the a full charge cycle. Every charge cycle will slowly wear down the battery.
      That being said from my personal and professional IT experience with dealing with many laptops and phones, the best practice to minimize the frequency of the number of times your laptop plugs into the wall. The wear of your battery is caused during expansion and contraction. When your laptop is near 100 percent and plugged into the wall, it will behave like a traditional computer and will draw current straight from the AC adapter. This good for battery since there will be little strain on your battery when your laptop is in use. The worst situation is when your battery is low and charging while your CPU is under high load. Your laptop needs push a high amount of current to your CPU which cause your laptop be get hot. Some of that heat from your CPU will affect your battery which also drawing current and getting hot. Heat is really bad for the lifespan of your battery. According to your Apple, fast charging happen between 0-80 percent then slow charging happens at 81-100 percent. I would recommend if you are doing something CPU intensive like encoding video then do it during the slow charging phase (80-100 percent).

You can't clean the fan without breaking seals and eventually the machine kept overheating. I tried leaving my macbook air in sleep mode instead of fully shutting down for a while. However I'm now going back to shutting the machine down after use. There have been a few times when the battery completely discharged, which has made an impact to battery health. I sometimes don't start the laptop for a week or two, so this could have been too long in sleep mode, which also might draw extra charge if any background processes are running. For me, the disadvantage of possibly completely discharging the battery far outweigh the smaller benefits of leaving the machine on.

I don’t really shutdown my MacBook every day, unless I know I’m not going to be using it for a couple of days or I’m completely finished with whatever programs I have running for the time being. I have noticed that it will automatically restart while in sleep mode sometimes, probably after it’s just installed an update so I don’t ever keep it on the charger while it’s on sleep mode (that’s apparently where problems can happen.) It hasn’t been as complicated as it probably sounds. If the battery is below 25%, I’ll charge while I’m using it until it’s between 50-75% charged. If I’m going to pick up where I left off tomorrow with the same work and programs I have running today, I’ll just leave it in sleep mode. If I won’t be using it for a day or two I’ll just shutdown. I shutdown probably once a week, for the weekends. So far, it’s running just as smoothly as day 1 and I feel pretty confident that I’m caring for it to the best of my ability. I’m no expert tho, so this is all going by what I’ve researched and what seems to keep it running smoothly.

    I would say shutting down after a days use is optimal. We're not entirely up to speed on everything we've been doing the last night the next morning and you don't end up wasting that much time, after all the M1 macs literally take 3 seconds to boot up.

    When i got a laptop 3 yrs ago (not mac) my brother told me to keep ur pc on sleep mode instead of shutting it down. It became a habit of mine but I didnt question why i need to do so. Recently, I got a mac and i want to use it as well as possible so that it’s lifespan wont shorten. And now I am researching on how to keep its battery health well.

      @@Sndbest Not sure what you mean by 'comfortable' - I guess you mean not distracting while you are using it. If so, yes, I'm really pleased I chose that colour, it's really really nice.
