Are USB-C Hubs Killing M1 MacBooks?

- Over the last few months, there have been some M1 Mac users report that USB-C hubs have been killing and bricking their M1 Macs. Specifically, it seems to be the pass-through charging or power delivery (PD) feature.

If you are thinking of buying a hub, here are two that I recommend and have tested myself:
Anker USB-C Hub: geni.us/machub
Caldigit Thunderbolt 3 Dock: geni.us/thunderboltdock
using pepper job usb c hub which sell in asp provider here. no bellkin or caldig. i got two surge proctector for my imac and m1.
Apple doesn't have USB-C ports, they have USB-4/Thunderbolt (note, there is no number assigned to Thunderbolt any more). Yes, it's a standards mess where some functions don't even have to work. Thanks Intel!
I’m glad you finally made a video, as I tweeted you long back in this issue. And with the OS update I feel confident to buy a dock now.
@@tonyburzio4107 old macbook and imac got thunderbolt 3 using usb c port interface, the m1 using thunderbolt 4 using usb - c interface. Normal laptop some using usb -c charging only and have 2.0 usb some using 3.2 .. it totally depend on icon at the right or top usb c
@@rebelsdeveloper367 could you pls share the links of your purchases
Since Macbooks have two thunderbolt type c port, I use one exclusively for charging the other exclusively for type c adapters. I think this is the best approach
I do so too. I think this is the better solution anyways!
@Senpai electrical stuff can't be touched by software, it not solved anything, apple just blunder on the new architecture just it , defect

I have been using M1 pro for two months and I never charge mine via hub(apple USB hub). I always use them separately. Just by my instinct. Glad they addressed the issue on time.
Same here
@@hawkeyeaerialphotography6652 me too, I never charge my m1 on the hub, I always charge on the laptop itself. idk why people just don't do that anyways.
For real, completely agree. Seems weird to plug into the hub vs direct to computer. It just feels wrong.
@@addykantoor6327 some hubs use up both ports of the MacBook Pro/Air. And who would’ve known about this issue? Lol. Idk why you act like people can read into the future and know this would be a problem.
Exactly. And what's the point in charging over a hub vs direct in the notebook? It doesn't provide you an extra port..
Again, thank you for keeping it short and to the point!
Perfect! That explains it. Thank you for your explicitly simplified explanation; it makes total sense. 👍
This happened to me on a 2015 MacBook with USB C Dock several years ago. I was using it with a USB Storage drive attached, wasn't charging through the dock, and heard a click and the laptop screen went blank. Took it to an independent Mac repair shop and they confirmed the logic board was dead.
late answer, but this is probably a dead U4700. It still is (one of) the signature failures of the 12" from 2015 and is not caused by anything but Apple's shit engineering. It's the sad truth. It's a 5$ component and a 20 minute solder job to fix it, but barely anyone is gonna tell you that...
Excellent ! thanks for recommend these USB-C like Anker. Almost bought a generic one.
I have been using the Otolla 10port hub. It uses both usb c ports. I also use a charge through that plugs into the hub. I have not had any issues with either except occasionally a peripheral will turn off unexpectedly. That, I think, happens if the power draw exceeds the power available. I find the need for external hubs very important with the new M1 MacBook Pro, since it only has two usb c ports.
There are two ports, I use the one exclusively for power and the other for the hub (bluetooth mouse, hdmi, camera, ethernet etc.)
But that’s a good idea tho. Thanks for sharing (:
Only two usb-c? * Laughs in 14" MBP with 3 usb-c and a magsafe charging port 😂
exactly, why charge it using hubs anyway?
does hub hdmi work without charge ?
I don't know about the M1 architecture, but on the 2016-2020 MBPs the circuits are designed in a way that if one fails, the other stops working too in most cases. I've never really seen a dead port by itself, it usually is the controller (like the CD3215) that fails and if it does, all the ports stop working. I might be wrong, but I think Apple implemented a similar design on the M1 Macs. At least the ones with 2 USB-C ports only.
Thanks for highlighting the issue. A question for you regarding the Anker hub you feature in the video. I have the hub but I hate that it does not enable the USB-A type of ports powered once the computer disconnects. Do you know of good hubs that keep the ports powered when the PD power is plugged in but the computer is not? Thanks.
I am using a relatively cheap USB C hub from Portronics and I don't use it for charge through but to read a normal pendrive. I have faced no issue.
I used a Anker Hub with my Intel MBP needless to say got these exact symptoms so went back to Apple on warranty where the main logic board was changed, the power button and even the screen! Very strange.
so, basically, everything...
I'm happy with my M1 MBPro and Anker hub... That said, this is what bothers me of Apple, they always spin/shift the blame unto others. Bad USB Hubs, but curiously it only affects them, not Win10 PC's.
Probably does affect them but not made aware bc of how many models there are
Louis Rossman provided proof other computer can be affected by this issue.
Bad usb cable also has been known to kill mobile devices few years back
@@rabidbou4336 I'm not gonna dispute any claim whatsoever of whoever made them. Every computer and/or accessory has their defective units. Even cpus have have cores that are defective and the list goes on. I'm just pointing that Apple always shift the blame, like "We're not holding out iPhones correctly" "Flash is Wrong for the User as it drains the battery"...
I totally feel you, except this time Apple has not blamed anyone, neither done an official statement -except from the software update which is a confession.
But anyway I’ve pointed out that USB-C PD standard has been frying a lot of mobile phone few years back, and I would not be surprised it’s the same issue here.
PD can provide up to 100W...
(Louis Rossman is a well known repair man -micro soldering, who is roasting apple on many occurrence BTW)
I had the hub (from AppleStore) going very hot in the 2018 Intel MacbookAir. I had a funny feeling about it and never used it with my M1 MacbookAir.
I reasoned that if it burns my fingers with just a hard disk, the charging load will fry it completely. It does not feel right.
Thanks for the video. This has been a source of anxiety for me for the last weeks. Have had M1 MacBook Pro since end of January. While it works, I can actually replicated a spontaneous reboot by plugging both Anker 7 in 1 hub and the Apple VGA/USB-C adapter, connecting it to external drive. All of this on battery. When I eject the disk, unplug the hub and plug the power cable into the port the MacBook reboots within minutes.
Not ok for a +€2000 machine. Wondering if anyone else has this?
So can you elaborate on the "spontaneous reboot by plugging both..." part? You were on battery power, plugged in the Anker hub, and then a VGA/USB-C adaptor to use an external drive? And after that it forced a reboot?
First off, why use that cable? Oh you mean the USB-C VGA Multiport Adapter from Apple? Was it an off-brand?
thanks, I've purchased an Anker one just in case, I haven't had any issues but I have been using a cheap brand hub and noticed that it does heat up.
To me it’s weird that some people buy a MacBook, then pair them with a cheap USB hub.

@@Mahalakshmi-Khan unfortunately I need the dongle because I use a 28” monitor with my M1 MacBook Air.
I had my M1 MBP clam shelled and docked to an Anker USB-C hub thru PD for 9 weeks without issues. Not sure if my 100w usb-c power cable with the E-marker has anything to do with it, which is then powered by a hypper 100w usb-c charger.
But I read somewhere, that constant plugging & unplugging of the hub PD from the laptops may also have contributed to the issues.
M1 mac really grpw this channel, congratz on your 50k subs

I owned an M1 MBA for one week and Apple already had to replace the USB-C ports in the laptop. For the record, i had never even used a USB-C hub on it at that point. Super duper.
I got the same hub as you do! The 8-1 Anker USB-C hub for my MacBook Air. It's amazing!
I've used Satechi hub and it was not issues at all. Now I have CalDigit TS3 Plus and totally satisfied.
hey nice information in the video i want to know that does the USB can still be used as magsafe i charge my M1 mostly with HP type C hub. So, I want to know does the magsafe still work perfectly through type C charging?
Keeps getting better
Almost three minutes in before I realized this video is two years old.
Good to know. I had a similar issue with two Topping external DACs dying when connected to my old macbook via USB. I figured out there was some voltage/static differential between them both, and from then, only used a toslik connector for electrical isolation. Thats something else to consider.
hii, which brand did you use? And was this not fixed after software updates?
Not just devices with M1 chip, even 2019 version happened as well. In almost of the cases I found, it seems to happen whenever you're trying to use PD port on the hub. My last MBP M1 got bricked because of that.
Btw, my hub is Hyperdrive 8-in-1
Whats pd hub
are you currently using hyperdrive? I just bought one for my new mba m1
Ahh damn. Was just looking to grab one of those Hyperdrive 7-in-2 Duo hub.

I just feel it crazy that many people view this hub or dongle thing as normal for a tool meant to just get things done. The dock station for the thinkpad seems legit but this small hub you have to carry around with you all the time ....

It's kinda annoying carrying it even when just switching from office room to your Living room (I need it for HDMI and external storage)
@@HH-mf8qz Are you really complaining? 😂
Boy are you guys doomed with your life attitude.
Could you recommend one without any cable which isn't that expensive?
Mine did, I think it was from Anker, but only when connecting the charger through the hub. I sent the MacBook back to Apple and had to wait 4 weeks for the new MacBook to come.
All thanks to you for helping me decide in buying the M1 Macbook Air and for all the awesome content!

my ANKER USB c hub, without my MacBook M1 being connected to the charger, shocked me. as in, very static shocks throughout the hub and the laptop. shocks you feel shooting up your entire arm
I had 4 external disks that won't start with 2 different Macbooks. I thought I was just unlucky with these disks, but now I can see that the only constant I had when working with both those Macs was the dongle. I have bought a different one and now everything is working great. So yes, I agree that some of these USB-C Hubs are not "Mac compatible".
What brands did you try?
A few months ago, I bought a new M1 Macbook Air and have been using it with a USB-C hub. The MacBook last about a month and my microphone start to break. I really don't know what's wrong with my mic it keeps on making a noisy wind sound whenever I turn it on. Went to the shop for a repair and now it's okay. Still can't figure out why, probably because of the USB-C hub I guess.
SUPER useful! Thanks a lot!!
Can you tell me if the Anker 7in1 (without ethernet) is good for my MBAir M1?
Doesn't seem to affect the Mini so likely a power supply issue specific to the laptops.
Thinking of getting an M1 Macbook, and would just like to confirm- is this no longer an issue thanks to their patch?
which hubs do you recommend for macbook m1, with USB, HDMI and general ports. which port is the exclusive one? which one do you use to charge the laptop?
Had this problem with my Atomos dock for the SSD. Twice my Mac Mini M1 just switched off, the first time I had all kinds of coloured squares appear on my monitor and some noises and then the machine just turned off. Thankfully it restarted after disconnecting the Atomos dock (which is now connected to my Dell monitor without issues).
I'm guessing Apple didn't land their implementation of USB4. Simultaneous Data and Charging through the same port is a feature of the USB4 standard, in theory its not that different from thunderbolt3 but Apple went with their own engineering on the controller.
I just hope the 14" has it all sorted, I need 3 external display support and am willing to spend good money for a portable workstation that can handle almost anything.
Hi, reading this 1 year later. How about it right now?
My M1 macbook air died in january because of an USB-C hub with power delivery (Aukey). The motherboard and touchID have been replaced... So, I bought the official apple USB-C hub, and no problem with it. Recently I updated to 11.2.2, but I did not retry my aukey usb-c hub because I'm scared to send my macbook again to the apple store x)
Frightening what can happen! Chance your device was still under warranty. Do you think such disaster could also happen from a simple USB 3 to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter (that also has 3 USB ports) which I use for cable connection and a LAN?
Thank you for this video. I am definitely battling with the confirmation bias because I am focusing too much on the negative comments. I really want to get the satechi slim usb-c multi port hub but still not sure about that brand.
I am convinced it killed my first 2021 M1 13” MacBook Pro. I believe it is what killed the monitor, which went completely black and unusable. It was an (AUKEY USB C Hub 10-in-1 Type C Adapter) from Amazon. Apple replaced my M1 and I got a new one now that I have not used a hub with yet, as I am honestly terrified to, so I’m stuck with 2 USBC ports, with sometimes only 1 as power is using the other. There is also currently another issue where the battery is showing needing support, even with it being 100% functioning, that is caused according to Apple support by a recent Big Sur update bug. So the M1 is full of weird problems currently.
Did you charge your MacBook through the hub?
CalDigit has been great for me! Thank you for this thorough review.
I have had my hub since April of last year, and I used it on my 2018 iPad Pro all the time, and ive been using for the past few days and its still fine. I don't use it for charging, I use the hub for the usb A ports for my keyboard and mouse, and I use the HDMI ports and ethernet port. I use the second USB-C port to charge my MacBook Air M1
I suspect it is due to max charging wattage on USB hubs
So realistically if you use the ports for their intended usage such as pen-drives, SD cards, HDMI and so forth, it should be fine. ?
@@kayleighgalea yes
A hub bricked my 2018 iPad Pro. I am able to charge my 20128 iPad Pro through the Magic Keyboard charge port but there are issues that cause resprings when I pull down to use the spotlight search but it doesn’t happen every time.
I used a dongle that is very similar to what you showed in the video, I connected an external camera, network cable and screen via HDMI and rarely my Mac (Macbook pro m1) crashed and restarted (I think it happened to me 2-3 times during a zoom call)
Just last week I had my M1 MBA reboot (more than once) with a USB C to 4 port USB A and 2 HDD's attached. I pulled out a more expensive hub and there was no issue. Retired the cheap hubs immediately (UGreen I believe) I heard about the power pass through issue, so I never use that feature.
The latest version of Big Sur was design to fix this issue. Which is really great cause it turns out it can be fixed through the software. I was afraid they were gonna have to do a mass recall.

Partly related question, would massively apply a reply. How well do devices work when connected to the usb hub - is there any latency. Specifically wondering about audio interfaces but any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

i stopped using usb hubs with macbooks since 2018 when i found that simply plugging in the hub would cut off the wifi- strangely putting the hub under the desk would not cause this problem- and this only occured with the macbook not the other pc laptops using the same hub!

I used the Anker 8-in-1 USB Hub and it drains battery so fast even when there’s no usb or etc plugged in the hub, it drains 1% battery per minute and it overheats even when not actively used, just plugged in my M1 mac.
I read that some of these Anker/OWC hubs even they are not connected to anything, they use about 8W -10W power which is normal
Actually useful short video especially with the recommendation at the end
Great work!
I think Mac Mini M1 will be fine as it does not use pass through charging. I would love a hub sized Mac SuperMini M1 that uses outboard power and is the size of a hub.
Within a month of using the MacBook Pro 2020, the USB hub that cost over $115 stopped working completely. One day it made a screech sound and then would not upload or recognize the camera. So now I have to replace it to find out if the USB works at all. I had to resort back to using my old mac, just to get work done. This is the first time I have ever been disappointed in a Mac.
I've experienced a similar issue. I have a 2019 13" Macbook Pro (not M1), and purchased a CalDigit TS3 to go along with my two Dell monitors. Everything works fine until I shut down my Macbook. It wouldn't turn back on. Needless to say I was scared shitless. I was able to turn it on a bit later (after 10 mins?). The same problem would occur later: not being able to turn on after I shut down my Macbook, though it always turn back on after a short wait.
Is this problem effectively fixed by now? I'm a new owner of one of these macs and really need to use a hub due to the need of the extra ports. But I'm afraid I'll break it.
I will like to now as well

I’ve been planning on getting a M1 MacBook Air and i want to back up my DVDs to a external hard drive with it. I have never owned a MacBook before and i was wondering will i have to copy the DVDs to the MacBook’s hard drive first or can i copy the DVDs straight to a external hard drive with it? This got me thinking because if i can copy them straight from a DVD drive to a external hard drive I assume I would have to use a USB hub.
SSD and Mechanical hard drive will fail faster than any M-Disc. I'd recommend and OWC Mercury Pro DVD/CD reader and burner. With an adaptor you could connect it easily to any of the M1 USB-C ports.
My Anker hub is building corrosion on the sides and gets super hot. I believe it created a voltage issue and my M1 Mac pro shocks me when it's plugged in.
Its possible that mismatching AC adapters can cause problems. If you have too many devices you most likely have too many AC adapters and accidentally use the wrong adapter providing inadequate wattage.
