    I think the biggest issue people have with not being willing to switch from Chrome to Firefox is that they have no idea how it works. Firefox functions relatively the same, you can import everything from Chrome, and if you don't like the button layout you can move them around to be less cluttered. It took me a few days to get used to Firefox and probably a month to switch off Chrome entirely, and I don't regret it.

      Another reason why it might be hard for some to switch is because Firefox is more strict with privacy. If you don't care about that you can flip a few settings.

    Until the last part, I questioned why Edge isn't mentioned. it has vertical tabs, easy synchronization, supports every device, and has split view and collections. I get that it's just redesigned Chrome but Microsoft for once seems to care about this product constantly tweaking and adding features which is not something you can tell about Google. Arc seems nice but it is a niche product and a lack of support outside the Apple ecosystem will just hurt potential adoption.

For a while it was stubbornness and a commitment to its openness, and it still is, but the killer feature is the Tree Style Tabs extension. Total game changer as someone who keeps a lot of tabs open and can follow many diverging paths while browsing.

    I just switched from chrome to firefox, and it's extremely refreshing. Google rolling out their "privacy sandbox" with it being on by default was the last straw for me. The only feature I miss from chrome is being able to search on youtube directly from the search bar. Besides that, I am a happy Firefox user! The switch was shockingly painless and the UI is very similar to Chrome, making it very familiar. I still have all my bookmarks and everything syncs perfectly between my desktop, laptop, tablet, and phone. Highly Reccomended
    That being said, I REALLY like Arc's UI. Modern displays have more room horizontally than vertically and it's time UI better reflects that. Vertical space is precious, so putting all the tabs on the side makes complete sense to me. This is what is most attractive about Arc to me. I would LOVE to switch to Arc, but I just cannot right now, nor do I expect to any time soon.
    I run Windows, Android, iPadOS, and Linux Mint. So, until they have TRUE cross platform support, I am just going to be jealous on the sidelines

    It's good to read the comments and see that many people are waking up to how good Edge is now. It had a rough start, but they quietly improved over time to the point that it's packed full of features (read aloud, translate, grouped tabs, collections, pdf markup, photo editor, rewards, shopping coupons, etc.) but at the same time is still pretty quick and doesn't use a ton of memory. And the Ace up it's sleeve is the integrated AI sidebar. You don't 'have' to use all the features, but they are great to have if you need them.
    Chrome is ridiculously over-rated. It was fine when it first came out, but it pretty much just stood still in time. It's pretty much living on name recognition alone. Many browsers surpass it in features. I bought a new laptop a few months ago and didn't even bother downloading it. I'm just using Edge now... though I'll probably download Firefox or something as a backup. Just my $0.02.

Hell, even to this day, I'll occasionally be on Google's website and get some ad from them about how "tHe iNtErNeT iS bEtTeR oN cHrOmE" which in any sane country should result in an immediate antitrust suit, but not this one apparently....

    • @IDoNotLikeHandlesOnYT
      @IDoNotLikeHandlesOnYT Před 4 měsíci +3

      IMO, most of Edge's added features should be provided by extensions rather than by the browser, and some should be provided by the OS.
      The former (coupons, AI, etc.) are things that are niche or varied enough that people should be able to choose from several different implementations of each thing, and even choose multiple, rather than just getting one of each chosen for them, which putting them in extensions (available from a store or otherwise) allows.
      macOS has had text to speech built in, available anywhere there's text system-wide, for two decades now (though control of it when it's speaking is limited to literally only a "stop" command, and there's no visual indication that speech is even happening, unless it's been improved since Mojave). Windows and Linux should just do the same (but with proper controls). PDF markup should be shared with a PDF-viewing desktop app, where you choose one markup engine and you download a browser extension and a desktop app that both use it, so your markup can be shared between both, or the OS provides a markup engine and a desktop PDF editor, and the browser uses that engine automatically.
      AI integration should be pluggable as well, in case you want to use a local model or a different cloud-service model.
      There are many other uses for sidebars (such as, in Chrome, the reverse image search sidebar, the bookmarks sidebar, and the poorly-implemented sidebar that shows which search result you clicked to get to the current page but only for Google and only if the search results are still open in a background tab), so they should be opened up for extensions to use. (That's something that was, IIRC, possible in Firefox before the nerfing of extensions by WebExtension standardization. That change had legitimate benefits but also, as I understand it, meant that other browsers switching to WebExtensions from their own systems would no longer be able to allow extensions to be any more capable than they were allowed to be in Chrome.)

I was amazed most by Andy's comment at 0:50 Does he really think Google is only available on Chrome? He works for a tech company. Firefox uses Google too, nonetheless, you can change the search engines in every browser. Also, most of the design differences are available in other browsers. The change was pretty easy to do (quick dialog box that asks the user what data they want to transfer, i.e passwords, favorites, and bookmarks), but also extensions (Such as Group Tabs, and Containers) on firefox makes it pretty nifty have a similar feature set. Plus ability to open the same tabs between PC and Mobile, granted I don't use this as often as I don't surf the internet very much on my phone. Also Firefox does have the ability to sync across multiple devices as well similar to chrome or other browsers that do the same thing as well.

This makes it feel very snappy when you're switching between tabs, but if you're fine with that, then yeah, Arc is one of the best browsers I've used recently. Also, it's very hard to change browsers if you've invested in extensions for Safari. If there were a way to keep using the extensions you had on Safari, I would've made this my default browser 😂

  • @JackStavris
    @JackStavris Před 6 měsíci +79

    I was a Chrome user since 2009 until just this year, when I went back to Firefox. I had gone between Firefox and Chrome for a couple of years during the Windows Vista & 7 days, even trying out IE9 when it was released, however since about 2015 I was exclusively on Chrome until this year when I finally moved away from it for good. Google's anti-privacy stance with Chrome is disgusting, and Microsoft's attempts to shove AI down my face with Edge push me away from it as well.
    Firefox has been an interesting change, and not necessarily in a good way. I like how it has a bigger focus on privacy and a cleaner feel than Chrome and Edge do, I like how it doesn't have any crypto junk built in like Brave and Opera do, and I also like supporting a browser that isn't Chromium since we don't want a monopoly on browser engines, we had that 20 years ago when IE6 had 95% market share and it wasn't good.
    That being said, there are some issues, I'm a tab whore and I feel that Firefox isn't as good with memory management and putting tabs to sleep, I can easily use all 32GB of RAM just with Firefox, as well as I've had a lot more tab crashes with it. I also don't like that I can't always restore my browser session if I have to reboot, often the option to restore all my tabs is greyed out when restarting the browser. Additionally, Firefox on iOS isn't great, it seems a lot slower than Safari, especially in places with low signal strength, switching between Firefox and other apps with often cause Firefox to open a new tab when you go back to it from something else, which is really irritating. I'm tempted to go to Safari on my iOS devices and my Mac, but then I won't be able to sync with my Windows PCs. I can't be the only one who wants a simple cross-platform browser with no garbage tacked onto it, is privacy friendly, and has no gimmicks. Maybe Arc will become that but for now I don't see a lot of people switching to it as it's just a bit too radically different.

    • @hayden.A0

      I haven't had an issue with restoring tabs before so I'm surprised to hear about that. I do agree though about Firefox on mobile (Android here) in that it somewhat disappoints in performance and I've had it completely black out on me when switching between apps sometimes. I still put up with it but luckily it does seem Mozilla is doing a lot of work on improving the mobile experience and bringing full extension support for example (which is why I use "IceRaven", a fork which removes extension limitations though a lot don't work). I hope we see more improvements soon.

      @jasonz8635 Před 6 měsíci

      Quite agree with your points - on that tabe management note though - I'd recommend installing "Auto Tab Discard" which auto-suspends tabs and frees up their memory (Firefox does it automatically but only when your computer is running low on memory). Also good is "Simple Tab Groups" which allows you to manage tabs into separate windows that can be brought up and removed with a single click. It also reduces memory consumption by converting unused groups into just links. Also auto-backups tabs so if Firefox decides to be annoying, you still have tab backups.
      Also for the memory issue - seems to me that part of their issue is with a memory leak issue specifically with their GPU thread - if you restart that particular aspect by killing that process in resource monitor (easiest way since it's memory allocation doesn't seem to show up in task manager for god knows what reason), your memory allocation drops by a lot.

    5) Notepad(Eazel) can also store chunk of a website as a live widget, like getting your favoruite weather app's daily weather section to the notepad
    6) Browser fully supports keyboard shortcuts and trackpad gestures toBoosts a point where pressing back/forward button no longer is needed.

    To start, I have a PC for gaming and sustained heavy workloads at home, and I have a MacBook Air for on the go. I really think resources and battery life (laptop only) are really important for me as long as I'm not sacrificing function in the browser. For a while I used Microsoft Edge on Mac and PC, but recently Apple added the profile function (which was a huge boon for me) and Edge continues to optimize and add features. So for PCs I will probably stick with Edge, and with Mac (as of now) I will stick with Safari. Both are really well optimized for their respective operating systems and have the features I need.
    EDIT: I also know that Edge is a controversial because Microsoft has tried multiple times over the history of Windows 10/11 to force you to use Edge only. But to me, not using such a great browser (overall) for Windows to make a statement that Microsoft won't even know about isn't worth the sacrifice of the integration that Edge has with Windows. I have also tried Google Chrome many times as well as other browsers such as Firefox, Opera, Opera GX, etc. and have never found the tight integration that makes using a browser so simple and efficient on my workflow. But others' milage may vary depending on what exactly you use your browser for.
    EDIT 2: I installed Arc again and I have started using it often. Safari is good for quick and easy tasks, but long research projects or extensive browsing sessions happen on Arc. It may not be quite as optimized, but it is still a well-designed browser that is just getting better. I also started using the mobile version. I will delete safari from my phone as soon as I can watch a video in landscape on my phone.

      @@MCxJudge Yes. On Safari and Edge when you have different profiles, each profile has its own separate collection of bookmarks. The most important thing on top of that for me is that each different profile has individual browser cookies. So for on each of my browsers I have a personal browsing profile, a business profile, and a school profile. Each has their own respective bookmarks and each are logged into their separate accounts for everything. CZcams is a great example. I have a personal google account that when I am on my personal profile I will be signed into my personal CZcams login. On my business profile, I can go to CZcams and it will be signed into my business account instead with no fuss. Super convenient.
