- On 4 January 1989, two Grumman F-14 Tomcats of the United States Navy shot down two Libyan-operated Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-23s which the Americans believed were attempting to engage them. The engagement took place over the Mediterranean Sea about 40 miles north of Tobruk, Libya.

Though recreation would have been a better word to use here than reconstructions, it's still sort of understandable. I used to work on the Tomcats in the early 90's , a night cat launch from a carrier in Zone 5 afterburner ,incredible.

The Libyan Air Force did mount a Search and Rescue operation to try, and recover their two MiG pilots, b7t, only one made it back alive, and the second one had died before he could be rescued. When the MIG's "kinked" back on after every they turned it made that first pilot more mad - you could tell by his voice. When he said "that's five times now!", you just knew he was ready to fire. Too bad for the Libyans... 😏

An amazing "Top Gun"-style encounter - - the inexplicable intent of the Libyan pilots was certainly questionable, and aggressive at the very least. If they were following orders, one wonders about intent. If they were on their own, they were just stupid. Either way, I do hope they were rescued.

Those F14 pilots sound scared back there (even made few life threatening mistakes), if you ask me - with all that equipment, and happy afterwards for staying alive..so I am not sure whether we can call them Badass or just Lucky; thats if we are talking about human factor of this, for all the rest it can be subject for debate.

Wow. This is even much more interesting than the depressing airline disaster videos you put up. But it seemed you are still using the same engine (x-Plane?) to simulate this dogfights. Why not use DCS? They are much more realistic looking.

Lord forgive me, but I can watch that MiG getting shot down ALL DAY! That said, talk about some short-termed memory loss; Quaddafi bombs PAN AM 103 right before Christmas, then pleads innocence when the US NAVY shoots down two of his incompetent fighters and wonders why the world didn't believe him? My only regret is that we didn't fish those pilots out of the sea. Probably would have revealed some interesting information.

If I’m walking down a sidewalk and I see someone in the distance walking toward me and I switch to the other side of the road 5 times and all 5 times the other person Mirrors my movement to be able to walk directly into me. I’m assuming he’s there to hurt me! Even if the mig’s had no Ill will toward the f-14’s, they did everything possible to destroy that theory! So I don’t feel bad

Ok, since this is reconstruction of historic event , it would be nice to hear other side also, just to see their point of view. Its is interpreted by the US Navy that behavior of Libyan MiG's as hostile act which was justifying their actions, but is there any policy internationally resigned what act should be consider aggressive? We have noticed that MiGs where guided by ground based radars, they never turn on their on-board radars, so there was no RVR receiver screaming....so in my point of view it wasn't justified shooting , it was just demonstration of force by US Navy... If they were getting to close to Kennedy battle group then it would be different story, but I haven't get that notion.....
So Libyans , jump in, explain this event, its not interesting to hear over and over one side...

When you are actually in the battlefield, It's kill or be killed and that's what the F 14 pilots faced with an enemy consistently vectoring to intercept them

- 🇺🇸 F-117 shot down by 🇷🇸 air defense in 1999.
All because another country didn't want to have to trade in US dollars.
