    Pilots should realize that the most carefully laid plans for approach and landing are worthless if an in flight destination, runway, or landing pattern change occurs. With such a a change, pilots need to reconsult their charts, and replan their approach. Here, for instance, the pilot even remarked about the mountains to the north of the airport. But I didn't see or hear any reference to terrain height or minimum altitudes. It was grossly negligent flying that caused this accident.

    Communication wasn't a problem for anyone on the flight deck except the Captain...he was told forcefully to watch his altitude, to turn quickly to avoid terrain ahead, to initiate a go around and to watch for terrain just prior to impact. His subordinates in the cockpit did everything they could do except knock him out and assume control of the airplane. Very ironic he's the only survivor among the flight crew.

      BEIJING (AP) _ The pilot of a Chinese airliner that crashed in South Korea with 166 people on board was well-trained and had over 6,000 hours of experience flying Boeing 767s, Chinese state media said Sunday.
      The 31-year-old pilot, Wu Xinlu, was among 38 people to survive the crash Monday near Busan, South Korea's second largest city. The defense of him in Chinese media follows suggestions from South Korean officials that human error was to blame.
      South Korean authorities have banned Wu from leaving the country pending investigation and have threatened to prosecute him if he is found responsible. At least 122 people were killed and six are listed as missing. Wu was hospitalized with a minor brain hemorrhage.
      In lengthy reports published in state newspapers, China's government-run Xinhua News Agency described Wu as a proficient and conscientious flier who aced tests.

      No decent pilot has ever "stopped flying the plane". Every competent commercial pilot is extensively trained on flying even in the complete failure of all automated systems. Controlled flights into terrain still happened before widespread automation, with aircraft under the command of pilots who had spent their whole careers flying aircraft manually.
      This incident is not "what happened when pilots stopped flying the plane", this is a result of poor training and human error, and would _still_ have been poor training and human error regardless of whether the aircraft had automated systems or not.

    • @quill444
      @quill444 Před 4 lety

      A good research topic might be to find out how much longer the runway needs to be to allow for an 'as safe' down-wind landing, and compare this additional planning and cost with placing an airport at a different location. Perhaps just another thousand feet would allow for down-wind landings to be just as safe. Or maybe down-wind landings pose additional risks other than just the length of the runway, and if so, what are they? This crash reminds me a little bit (in terms of the lack of overall experience and training inside the cockpit) with the February 2009 crash of Continental (Colgan Air) Flight 3407 near Buffalo. czcams.com/video/ST6vs4JXGV4/video.html - j q t -

    My mom was originally scheduled to fly on that flight (business trip, original plan was Shanghai-Busan with stopover in Busan with Air China) but changed to another flight(which instead of connecting to CA129 at PEK, she now change flights at Seoul) a few days before departure since she was unsure. She didn’t told anyone, which freaked my grandparents out until they learned that she was on another flight.
    Little did she know at the time, that move saved her life and her unborn child aka. me or otherwise she would end up in the business class of that 767, which only few survived in that section
    Moral of the story: Trust your mind and don’t fly on business class (the 2nd one is a joke) :)
    Also, the captain of CA129 now runs a flight sim store in Beijing downtown, and he is the “instructor” of the 737-800 flight sim
    I think I posted this somewhere else a long time ago and later accidentally deleted, so...

    As usual great recreation of the accident by FC. A significant observation was that the two pilots hadn't done an approach from the mountain side. Flying is all about skill, knowledge, training and most importantly experience. Only comprehensive training ( including simulation) involving all aspects of flight situations can prepare a pilot for an incident of this nature. I suppose ATC could have routinely warned them about the hazards of the revised runway approach as it is not possible for the pilots to consult their charts at such a critical juncture.
