      That's kind of the basis of instrument flight though. To fly not being able to see anything. The purpose of instrument approach and landings is do an approach until you see a couple runway lights, then make the landing. They were doing mostly all the right steps with the exception of descending below MDA it's just that their landing was short most likely due to pilot illusion compounded with rain and potentially windshear.

    • @Kaimine08
      @Kaimine08 Před 4 lety +11

      @@pasoundman I agree. It's sad to see pilots who have the experience but are so complacent that 4 red papis doesn't scare the hell out of them. I'm a private pilot and if I see all red on an approach on an excellent VFR day I'm putting either enough power in to fly straight until I intercept the glide or I'm going around. If it's at an unfamiliar airport, I'm going around on short final with all red, I'm going around. I can't imagine seeing all red on an instrument approach and thinking... meh, probably fine.

      They were a small LCC, they started in 2003, grew to become the first LCC in Italy for transported passengers, but then rapidly declined and went out of business in 2012. Flew them a few times between Northern Italy and Sicily, they were kind of okay from what a passenger could experience, good enough for a short flight. They were found to be terrible at safety after this accident which contributed to their demise together with the financial crisis, raise in oil price and poor management including the CEO stealing money from the company (not sure if he went to jail but he sure went on trial).

    The reason that the airline has those policies about not descending below a certain point until you see the runway is not so that the pilots can just ignore it. Nobody is perfect and you shouldn’t assume that you can pull off anything and that everything will be alright. I feel that the airlines should me more strict about enforcing these MDAs or other altitude restrictions because I find that they are often a factor in many incidents or accidents that occur during landing. I’m glad that everybody survived.

    I was under the impression, wrongly, obviously, that all ATC worldwide was conducted in English.

      As was I. I guess for the most part if it’s a person speaking the same language as the controller, they both speak their language? I was watching a video with a Swedish ATC and they did the same thing. Spoke English to other pilots but Swedish to Swedish pilots.

      I feel like people are more effective in their native languages anyways, so I think unless it is international, pilots and ATC should be speaking their native languages.

      It's not uncommon to hear non English comms on ATC, however in flight training they impressed upon us the importance of using a common language as much as possible as other Aircraft and Pilots can also hear the clearances, issues or directions given by ATC and have an idea if anything said conflicts with what they themselves have been told or are doing.
      I believe (but I may be wrong) the Milan Linate Runway incursion and subsequent collision had some factor of language barrier as one pilot received a clearance in Italian the other pilot had no idea that he'd be about to cross an active runway with a plane rolling.
      In short I think that regardless of location, national pride and what not all communication should be carried out in a common language.

    Thank you for your new + great video. That the 3 captains + controllers spoke in Italian was great, because I understood everything. I like your videos very much. These are short, everything is explained + informative, CVR is there, great reproduction of the entire flight, great + excitingly staged., Great music. Many thanks for the hard work.
    Alitalia Flight 404 is somewhere available?

    What subsequently happened to the flight crew? Were they temporarily relieved of duties until mandatory training successfully completed? Were they terminated/fired/let go? Or given the option of early retirement?
