Dell XPS 15 Review (2020): The ideal 15-inch laptop

- It's no secret that we love the XPS 13. Dell has refined the portable thin-and-light into one of our favorite laptops. At the same time, the XPS 15 has sometimes felt like a neglected member of the family, lacking some of the polish that made the XPS 13 so great.
With their new 2020 model, Dell is finally showing the XPS 15 some love, with an improved keyboard, large trackpad, sleek design, and excellent, nearly bezel-less screen. Add in powerful internal options including a 6-core i7 Intel CPU and discrete Nvidia graphics, and all for less than many of its competitors, and the XPS 15 joins its 13" sibling as one of our favorite laptops.

I am tired of commenting how beautiful this laptop is in all review videos on CZcams.
Stop now! Get some rest
@@JibranKhanJB such concern
Is it good for rendering? I’m an archict and I was considering this dell xps 15
Is it good for 3d Cad programs? I’m mech eng student and I’m willing to buy it.
your commenting right now haha
I recently had to buy a new laptop; this one looked very nice, but fell into the "may be I can afford it if I sell both my kidneys" category.
🤣🤣🤣
**PLEASE HELP!** I have the Dell XPS 15 from 3 years ago. Ever since the recent Microsoft update my Dell would not start up properly and would stay stuck on a black screen. After calling customer care it appears my hard drive cannot connect. They asked me to send it in. They said they have to check the motherboard as well. One or both may need to be replaced. Can anyone tell me if its worth replacing the hardrive and or motherboard or should I just upgrade?
I use my laptop for editing and considering the Surface Book 3 but prefer this new Dell 15. But im scared to go back to Dell after this plus the periodic screen flickering issues that came with my current laptop.
then which laptop am i meant to buy???? everyone has something bad to say about EVERYTHING IM CONFUSIONNNN
please can you not like my comment & help me ;(
How much money are you willing to spend
Kosta kallias around 3000£
Im in the same situation hahahah
Hey, I was in a similar situation recently. I ended up going for the previous model, the XPS 15 7590, largely due to the fact that it was cheaper than the newer model, which allowed me to get it speced up for what I do (video and photo editing). I ended up paying about the same price I would've paid for the newer model of the XPS 15 but, but my computer is speced up and there isn't a lot of difference in power between the XPS 15 7590 that I got and newer XPS 15, but this is just my case considering that info video and photo editing. It all depend on what is it that you do. If you do casual browsing and watch videos online, then save some money and look into different models of laptops with at least 8gb of ram. Now if you do video editing and photo editing, coding, graphics, or after effects and rendering get the previous model but get it speced up. That's my advice, best of luck !
I brought it (this version exactly). It's amazing when it comes to performance, I'm going back home soon to my mechanical keyboard and screen and I won't mind, but it does warm up so much that it's problematic. An important note for anyone who is going to work on this laptop as a portable powerhouse.
Use ThrottleStop to prevent the laptop from Turbo Boosting when on battery power. This will extend the battery life, as well as keep the laptop nice and cool!
@@CitAllHearItAll Hi, I might be late to ask this but I hope you still could answer my question. Does the Throttlestop on the Turbo boosting influence the CPU performance too much or is it still able to manage tasks like rendering or even playing fairly new games at this point? Im thinking about using it for gaming and work with an eGPU and would like to know if its worth it
I got new XPS 15. How to enable trackpad momentum? I've looked for weeks, its driving me mad. Anyone successfully get trackpad momentum to work on new XPS 15? how did you do it?
In what context was battery life tested? Was it just web browsing , light productivity, watching movies? It wasnt very specific. I would like to try to get 8 hours with some light productivity but with the 4k screen?
is this good for arhcitecture rendering/modeling?
Looks great and looks like it will perform well. Does anyone know if Dell gives the typical recharge cycles the battery should last for before capacity drops to 80pc?
Should i get an xps 15 2 in 1 or a specter 15 x360 😬
Here in Brazil the Dell XPS 13 had just got released. Waiting for the big brother XPS 15 before Christmas (PLEASE, DELL BR)
I found an XPS 15 9500 Core i9 version with 32GB RAM at a local computer shop at a great price. Is it worth it to buy it? Please advice! I badly need a replacement laptop
no PGdn and PGup keys. I am not sure why they cannot split the navigation keys as Lenovo does.
Is the touch screen compatible with a pen ?
Does Lumion works well in this laptop?
Saw some reviews by customers that the battery lasts less than a year and heats up damaging the touch pad as the battery sits right below the touchpad.
Honestly what’s the best 4K laptop for movies?
Does it have backlit keyboard?
Does it have a built in camera and microphone?
Love that background music!
Facts
Just picked the I7, 1TB, 16gb model for £1500 from dell outlet (refurbished) and the price includes 4 years added premium support. I’ve only heard good things about dell refurbished products :)
What is the latest XPS computer? I'm looking for a good computer for my daughter for college. MacBooks are just so expensive.
overheating?
Is this a good laptop for 4k video editing?
Does it have a disc drive?
I love the new XSP15 but I have so many issues with the killer wireless card. Can't even use my WD19tb docking station with monitors because the wifi slows to a crawl due to the lack of power management options with the "modern standby" mode. It's hardware related because I have the same issue in Ubuntu
I don't like arrow keys layout. it is difficult to recognize key without looking down at keyboard. Apple learned its mistake and put inverted T arrow keys layout in macbook 16.
Thinkpad X1 Extreme or this?
Is this laptop is available at india
My problem with all the spx’s is that the keyboard doesn’t favour us, we Accountants. This is because it doesn’t come with numeric side keys.
Is it 360 degree turn ?
There are only 2 usb slots and no internet cable slot on my DELL XPS 15 2020! The one i bought back in 2010 had 3 usb slots and a slot for direct internet cable. Now i can only use internet if i have a wifi router
How much is that coast?
It's only have usb port type C? Hmmm
My dad got this for my birthday yay!! And I'm gonna ace this at school
I am happy for you 😊 I wish my dad buy me one too
Wow nice! I just bought this for myself for my birthday cos my parents never get me anything 😂
No one wants to know how spoilt you are...
i really wish it had a USB A port but looks like ill buy it for intensive university study and online work.
What will be it's price in India
Does it have a lighted keyboard? and also I would like to see just the silver case one so I can determine if the keyboard frame is black, or silver. or grey. They never show you that on the Dell website. My older Dell XPS has silver keys with lighted keyboar. I would like to see more on the keyboard area.
It does have a lighted keyboard, and you can customize the duration and the brightness of the lights.
How much is it?
and yet every single reviewer forgets to mention all the build quality and quality control issues.
comprehensive review, my ass.
I wish I could afford one of these.
Price ?
Not a fan of the headphone jack on the wrong side. Why can’t they just keep it on the left side
Im getting the same laptop, its arriveing tomorrow, im so excited
Did it arrive for you? Can u pls tell me if it works good or is laggy i really wanna buy it but idk...🧍♂️
Please talk about your experience! I'd love to know.
Knock knock how is the laptop please. Any heat issues, application slow downs and battery life?. Thanks in advance 🙏🏻
The dell precision 5750 offers the same features and can be seriously upgraded. Please compare before you buy.
A usb-c to hdmi and usb-a dongle is included in the box.
Thanks for letting me know. I was googling dongles if I bought this.
Very nice, how much for this model?
Regarding the bezels that everyone is complaining about, I am not comfortable with the idea of the bezel-less screen or even thin ones. I don't feel that the screen would be protected anymore, in other words, the concept of how easy the screen could get damaged or cracked without having bezels to support it not getting out of my mind
Did you feel “feedback” when lightly tapping the touchpad? A sort of brief rattle like the touchpad is hovering loosely on the laptop. I have a MacBook pro, a surface book, and a Razer 15 and all those laptops have solid touchpads with zero noise or physical reaction for light taps, Dell XPS does and it's driving me nuts, makes the touchpad feel cheap. We went back to the store and tried out another, same thing. The guy says it's supposed to be that way, but in the last couple of years I've never experienced a laptop touchpad that provides physical feedback like that for simply tapping, not clicking.
Did you return it? Dell confirmed this was a manufacturing fault. New units do not have this issue.
When is it coming to India?
these laptop is good for autocad , solidworks and adobe premiere for engineerinh?
For sure.
How do you think this would handle entry-level Autocad/Archicad workloads?
Probably like a champ but that mostly depends on which configuration you select.
i really wish if they could bring that xps logo on top
I'm curious this against the 16" MBP. Is the track-pad finally equivalent? I'm concerned about the switch to ARM, so that has me looking at Windows laptops for the next 3 years.
For real, I know a lot of people who are switching from apple to windows because of apples new ARM cpus they'll be using. Personally I actually prefer windows OS despite my loving apples software, but trust me, you'll start liking windows if you get the right computers. Just make sure you get a good antivirus
Not close yet. Most windows trackpads fall short on 3 finger and 4 finger gestures. The OS is not designed to be responsive to those gestures. Not to mention lack of launchpad, which if you’re a miss if you’re coming from a Mac. I would also say that your concern about arm macs is still a bit too early, considering we haven’t even seen an arm Mac yet.
@@renni9813 The first benchmarks for Apple's implementation of ARM in their computers are exceeding all expectations.
you forgot to mention the huge quality problem of the 15 xps in their trackpad where A LOT of units come with a loose trackpad that makes a clicking sound when you move your fingers around without you actually clicking. That amazing quality control of excell is "exceeding all expectations" as always
Dell says this is now resolved and they will repair/replace any with the issue.
@@johnm91326 update?
Can this upscale 720 and 1080p to 4k or near 4K .?
If there is no HDMI port, how would you connect it to a television?
Screencast, miracast and share tv
But I'm waiting for the 2021 XPS Ryzen
I have XPS 9560 and it is plenty fast today, but that screen tempts me (even the 17" model seem reasonably portable). However the lack of "legacy" ports (since when is HDMI legacy?) is deal breaker. In five years this will probably not bother me anymore, but now it is a big problem. At least one USB-A is a must for me (haven't seen a single usb-c flashdisk outside of a store and 90% of accessories are still using USB-A). Moreover I use HDMI port daily so that is another dongle I would have to carry.
Another reason to wait is that it is using soon to be obsolete hardware. Both intel and nvidia will be transitioning very soon to better litography and newer architecture (most likely next revision of XPS will have those). Both will be very beneficial for a laptop.
How does it handle full load CPU? Does it downclock due to heat issues and is the jet engine issue resolved? One of the biggest issues with the last generations of the XPS 15 was you couldn't push the CPU to max potential due to heating issues. Also the thermal fans kicked in even at the lowest CPU/GPU levels and it sounds like a jet engine.

What's this game ?
Hey there, for anyone who could help me, I've had my eye on this laptop for a few weeks and I was curious if it can run Adobe products (Premiere, Photoshop, etc.) comfortably. Also if anyone knows, can it also run video games pretty well? I saw some benchmark tests and they looked impressive
I have the older gen with the 8th gen i7 and 1050 ti max-q. I just beat Shadow of the Tomb Raider on this laptop last week. I also play Skyrim too much. It can handle gaming well enough for me. You're not going to get ULTRA graphics on AAA games with 120hz, but you can do medium graphics at 60hz. And yes, this laptop works great with Adobe products. I'm a computer programmer, and this is the laptop we got for our in-house graphics designer. It slays.
@@CitAllHearItAll oh awesome, im gonna buy the new model specifically for adobe but i was hoping it could run games at medium, thanks!
Waiting for the inverted t arrow keys
Song?
it looks so sick but its so expensive
Not really
yeah id say its well worth the price
Z ikr
its targeted customer is rich anyway
yu zhou I think anyone with a stable job can afford it, its really a matter of whether or not it will be worth it for your needs
Who know the song wich started
Who will talk about thermals? Every laptop review is incomplete without that.
Look at tally ho tech’s video
The 6 core is fine, just don't get the 8 core in this laptop.
@@JDDD33 If you do work that benefits from many cores, ofc get the 8-core. Also the 6-core easily hits above 90C if you push it.
@@JDDD33 repast immediately and under volt and keep those fans clean.
I wish someone made a copper DIY vapor chamber for it.
Bad. The trackpad is fucked aswell. Seems like almost everyine recive faultry trackpads. Dpnt get one until thats fixed.
How long does it take to ship out if you buy straight from dell
between two and three weeks
Now we just need an AMD version with 3000 series nvidia gpu
Is it just me or other than the screen/touch screen most external interface just scream Macbook?
yeah if the keyboard was made of metal it would look near identical. I don’t think it’s a bad thing though. i’ve wanted windows laptops to look as polished as macbooks for years
Seriously, who talks about laptop review w/o getting through the thermal issue as past XPS line up having thermal issue so frequently. Before we purchase it, we can't really get the laptop beforehand and test it, tech reviewer like Engadget should provide a details from hardware to software, thermals.
Ps: I owned XPS 15 (9560), such a disappointing machine at this kind of price. Thermals and lags what makes me so frustrated.
Shall we mention tot the new .50 cent cheapo crap camera and sensor it comes with as well? Not even mentioned with massive work from home, daily zoom/webinar and needing a high quality built in camera, Macbook camera blows this thing away?!?! Sounds like a paid Dell advertisement for this thing. But with that said, Macbook Pro 16" even the highest end ones we own they make, still the processor during video calls and other workload the fan is making a lot of noise, nature of all laptops/tablets.
Have an XPS 15 2018 i7 8th gen. The thermals were so messed up, it wont turn on now. Battery got effed. Keyboard keeps blinking when I turn it on. Thanks dell! Even on chrome, it runs fans at full speed which is unnecessary.
Dell. Cant even afford Taco Bell.
Mambo Ferido ??
and how does taco bell come into a laptop review???
You come to CZcams for help on purchasing a laptop and end up more confused. Lol. I've already returned 2 computers this year. I really don't wanna go through that again.
Those arrow keys (left/right)... I prefer the ones from 2019 XPS15 9570. They now did the same weird thing as apple few years ago. -.-
When it's coming on sale?
Harsh Sharma sale in russia right now. 200$ off
Worth getting the 15 over the 13? I like the portability of the 13 but want the best for the money as well
would also be my question
Don't think so until Dell can sort out their quality control issue on the TrackPad.
Can tell you from my own experience it still isn't fixed today unfortunately
Good lord that screen phew
how much storage does it has?
Hi is this good for I.T Students?...like programming and coding.
Absolutely , but too expensive for students who do part-time job to pay their rent
I'm buying this laptop tomorrow, leave a comment or question if you have any and I'll do my best to answer them :)
How many cycles can the battery do before it’s trash
I can't find an i9 configuration. What's up with that?
Not available in all regions. In NZ it currently tops out with the 8-core Core i7 option.
Same case for me and I'm in the U.S.
Sources claimed that it would be released June 15th, but that date came and went. Still no i9.
In other news, Costco still only carries last year's model. No 9500 yet :(
@@joshb1740 Possibly Covid-19 related supply chain issues? FWIW I'm finding the 8-core Core i7 processor plenty fast enough for what I do - graphic design, image editing, occasional bit of gaming etc.
Like u put a Reggeaton beat for background
it sucks that nobody other than Apple or Microsoft are offering a screen in between the crappy 1080p and the 4K. Most people don't need 4K, its plain stupid in such a small display and even more when you consider how much battery it goes through. The 1080p is just not enough so having something in between is the best option
Javier pereira rodriguez and Huawei. The MateBook x pro looks really nice. Solid build too, when I was able hold one before the whole Huawei ban.
Javier pereira rodriguez nah 1080p looks really good atleast on this model and I’ve heard from a lot of reviewers that it’s probably not worth getting the 4K
Decided to get this over a MBP 13. Hope I made the right choice. Have been a Mac user for 10 years. Looks amazing. Thanks for the review

No bottom border sucks. When I type, my big ass man hands block the screen, so 1/3 of the screen is not visible.

It's super expensive in Australia, like Dell are bending us over backwards expensive!
It's actually reasonably similar it's just US get the real cheaper options like i5 and 8gb ram versions that we don't get. Specs for specs they're roughly the same.
There is a EOFY discount and 15% cash rewards discount available right now which will bring the price down to 3000 (I know it's till high, but at least not 4k+
Mick Davies i would buy macbook pro 16 instead of dell
Hit the 20% EOFY sales. I did. And in Oz the price for the (i7-10750H, 512ssd, 1050ti, 16GB) model goes down from 3800 to 3000ish. Which is like 2000USD. A similar model in the states is $1850USD, so comparable.
@DS first, the prices are nearly same when it specs out. second macOS. better software and app support. better screen. way better sound quality
Now I'm lost everybody's complaining about a trackpad on what the XPS 15 was it just a bat because the computer has a great reputation for photo and video editing
Would have bought the XPS 15 right away if they were able to fit a GTX 1660 ti card in it. The 1650 ti has the older Volta NVENC while the 1660 ti cards have the newer Turing NVENC. Better quality videos in 1660 ti cards if you use NVENC for live streaming or Premiere Pro.
The XPS 17 on the other hand has newer Turing NVENC. It’s the perfect laptop for people who wants something that big. Not for me though. I want something that is no more than a 15.6” for traveling.
I have had my XPS15 for 2 weeks and I love it! Posted my unboxing and initial impressions video if anyone is interested to see it through the eyes of a regular, non tech person!
Some are saying that the 15" has thermal issues. Is this true?
Nope I'm a high schooler student and use the same model mentioned in the video and while playing games at ultra graphics the temperatures get at 90c but at medium and high it's damm fine...
