How ‘Triangle of Sadness’ Turns the Tables of Status | Anatomy of a Scene

- The wealthy get a sendup and a send-off in “Triangle of Sadness,” the latest feature from the Swedish director Ruben Ostlund, now in theaters.
The film begins in the fashion world, following an influencer-model couple (Charlbi Dean and Harris Dickinson). The two get a free cruise on a luxury yacht, where they meet an assembly of very rich passengers. But things take a turn in the third act, when a smattering of those passengers turn up shipwrecked on an island.
In this sequence, the characters, having spent an eerie first night on the island, wake up to see a lifeboat with only one person inside: Abigail (Dolly De Leon), who was a cleaning lady on the yacht.
“What was important for me,” Ostlund said, “was that I wanted to swap the power structures on the island. I wanted to turn them upside-down.” This scene begins that gradual change in the hierarchy, as Abigail, who has arrived with sustenance (as well as practical skills), begins to realize that she may have a currency on the island that she didn’t have before.

Dolly de Leon is so amazing in this film. She deserves an Oscar nomination, if not the award for Best Supporting Actress.
💯
best actress? not really.
If these rich, powerful people insist on giving each other shiny things then Jamie Lee Curtis "deserved" it!
I had a fun time watching this film in Chicago! The whole yacht scene was very humorous and the ending was a nice character study
It is, in essence, the same core theme as Lina Wertmuller's 1974 film Swept Away, whereby a rich bourgeois woman finds herself lost in an island on the Mediterranean sea, together with a low ranking crew member from a yacht whom she frequently mistreated, and keeps doing so after they both find themselves lost in this deserted island. This film, "Travolti da un insolito destino nell'azzurro mare d'agosto" in the original title, is one of the last important Italian films before the industry became pasteurized by large production companies, instead of the indepent production companies from the post war period that helped create some of the greatest films ever made.
And it's very similar to The Admirable Crichton, a play by Peter Pan creator JM Barrie subsequently made into a film.
@@sphinxtheeminx This was my comment.
Ruben Östlund’s has completely ripped off J. M. Barrie's 'The Admirable Crichton' and made a very poor attempt. Do yourselves a favour and see the original 1957 film The Admirable Crichton. It's got Sean Connery's ex wife in it and Truly Scrumptious from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
Ostlund's 'The Square' was a much better film.
Hitchcock's 'Lifeboat' was also a much better film.
beautiful movie.....and of course RIP Charlby...so sad that you passed away......😓😢😭
I find it interesting that "yaya" in filipino is maid...
Yaya means nanny, technically. But maid is also not wrong.
they did it on ourpose
Watched it yesterday and can definitely say that it's a good movie. The characters and the story itself is quite oddly interesting.😊
Great movie. The character of Abigail is very interesting
brilliant masterpiece
In den Wolken !
Love this movie!
Social commentary. Very timely.
Thank you
Great movie
Rip Charlbi
In Filipino, "yaya" means "nanny." Is it a play of words? The lead actress' name means "maid" to us.
I really enjoyed the film. Some of the scenes on the yacht were gross but really funny. It's good to watch a film that lingers on your mind after, too many films are so easy to forget 5 minutes after watching.
Such an amazing movie
Why was the yacht tipping rolling around so much when in many scenes looking out the cabin windows the sea looks calm and the sky is nice pinkish colour
I'm glad he explained it cuz I thought the film was weird. Especially the last sequence where the guy was running.
He was running because I think he knew something bad was going to happen to his girlfriend
RiP Charlbi Dean 😢
The time of the times.
Anything on Clint Curtis?
Dolly Se Leon for the Oscar please
I was glad she showed the captain she not on the yacht anymore. Treat people with equity.
The movie should have ended with the question when Yaya asked abigail "Do you want to be my assistant?" rather than having carl run hysterically in the jungle.
It would have fit the theme of the movie and with a better impact for the end. imo
Carl running that fast means either he saw Yaya dead and ran hurriedly back to tell everyone OR he was running towards Abegail and Yaya telling them that a salesman was seen in the island. I
@@MarkTheTvGeekI think he realized that Abigail would try to get rid of Yaya
I think the scene with Carl running was a fitting ending. Though his motivations were vague, I think it showed his sense of urgency that the two loves of his life were in danger (unbeknownst to him, one of committing murder, the other of being a victim). Carl's struggle with connection and love could be seen as the central theme of the movie--hence the focus on him at the end.
It was an ending opening up interpretation to the audience. Very European
Crl is definitly running towards the pair, he is going from L to R, just as they had before.
Before Carl running there were two possible resolutions.
1) Abigail maintains her power by killing Yaya, and returns to the beach to say Yaya is lost.
2) Abigail puts the rock down and decides to reclaim her humanity. Yaya is none the wiser, they go up together in the lift.
With Carl running into the triangle of sadness there are now multiple resolutions
3) Carl Is just on time to witness the murder but not stop it
4) Carl has enought time to stop the murder but doesn't stop it
5) Carl stops the murder and escapes with Yaya in the lift
5) Carl arrives to find the beach deserted and takes the lift to see what is at the top
and many more.....
First I thought it was disgusting especially the scene in the restaurant just before the cruise ship goes under . But I also liked the way people showed themselves as they really were . No filter
Ironically, yaya in Filipino means house helper / maid.
technically, it means 'nanny' not maid. Yaya - nagbabantay ng bata (nanny), hindi kasambahay (maid).
The woman with diarrea😂
Yaya offering a Filipino an assistant job. Ironic since in Filipino, a "yaya" is a person who looks after someone.

No shame about own nakedness.
Love isn't in the air here.
It's a pandemic movie.
Saw yesterday...Nice....not great
Grammy park bodega.
I appreciate the idea behind this, and the plot, but the movie moves way too slow. Scenes are drawn out far too long.
Loll social media has ruined your brain. The movie was a masterpiece. Not everything needs to be diluted

Gilligan's Island did it better, and lots funnier

Saw the movie last week. I wasn't much impressed. Anyway I feel sorry for the untimely death of this young actress. RIP from Italy.

Saw that old movie cause you wrote about it. I have to say many things are common in the two movies. Admirable Crichton is a delightful movie. Triangle is not so great to win a Cannes Grand prize.
Didn’t like the movie
lol
No problem.
A middle age Filipina wouldn't be sexually attracted to a lad because being a cougar appeals more to western women having enough wealth to secure a grotesque reputation. Foreign men who come to Manila are very exclusive and self-reserved believing they are entitled to live like the Filipino aristocrats and bourgeoisie who are roughly 14% of the city. So to offer their bodies to anyone, even to a street sweeper in desparation is more degrading that death it self.
Morale: the poor wannabes are going to destroy our society.
how limited must one be to see THIS in the movie. The morale is that the society is being destroyed right now, by anybody who assumes power.
@@eleven4749 that is a pretty silly morale tbh
A very poor scene.

I have seen this film, I cannot understand that it has received various awards, including the best film 2022 that the European Film Academy has awarded it?? This movie is NOTHING extraordinary, nor interesting, and the actors themselves, nothing spectacular, the story: irritating, inconclusive, confusing and incongruous! a mediocre movie, that would be my definition, I was about to leave the theater twice, but it was raining outside the premises! The ending is one of a movie... nobody understood it, well, it irritates me so much that it is, I think, and without exaggeration... one of the worst European cinematography of this 2022, I do not/do not recommend it at all! It hurt me to have paid 7 euros for such a bad movie! The best thing was the coffee after this bad movie that after 5 min. forget!
It is clear that your taste in movies hasn't maturated yet . Great films ask questions they do not give answers and conclusions . Maybe you like the linear storytelling of Hollywood, where the hero goes to fight the evil and wins in the end . Sorry to disappoint you but this is not that movie . You should stick to consumer movies like Marvel ones .
Go watch Avatar then lol
It's a mishmash of three different movies in one. It starts like a French comedy, it evolves in a 70's style political grotesque movie and then ends like sorta I'm a celebrity reality show.
hahahaha Im glad you spent your 7€ but did not like what you spent for 😂😂😂😂 You are as narrow as the pupils of your eyes. 😂😂😂
wow so many people fou.d this movie great..makes me question thier intelligence....this was one of the sloppiest most oncoherent bad movies i have ever seen....its only smart on the surface...how superficial the so called intellectuals are...how easily fooled....this film reeks of bad...like i dont kbow where to begin....its all bad...some scenes are good...if taken out of context of the wholE movie...but when put together its just so supeficial pretentious and stupid and bad
It was just awful. Awful characters. Awful dialogue. Awful premise. Awful music. Just embarrassingly bad
manifesting an oscar nod for dolly de leon 🫶🤞🏼
Americans! no offense said. But you somehow miraculously got rich for the resources of Russia, and now you are dragged along the impassability?
Huh?

lol
A very poor scene.
Indeed; it resembles a 1970s film made for TV. Although, it is unfair to judge a film by watching 3 minutes of disconnected footage
Elaborate.
Well this part on the island is only a small part of the whole. I recommend you watch it. It was quite good.
