  • Few filmmakers can eviscerate social norms like Ruben Östlund. In his latest Palme d’Or-winning film, Triangle of Sadness, he brings his sharpest tool yet for the job. The Swedish director sat down with Q’s Tom Power at the Toronto International Film Festival to discuss the film, his fascination with social hierarchies and the economic value of beauty.

I enjoyed the movie but the portrayal of the ultra wealthy is totally wrong and off the mark. I live in close proximity to very wealthy folks and I don’t recognize these people in the movie. The ultra rich are extremely guarded, reserved, inaccassible, and opaque. They would never go around talking about their wealth with strangers. They also don’t chat with people who serve them. They charter private yachts with their friends and family. This is totally unbelievable. It’s cartoonish. The real powerful rich are also extremely non extravagant in style. They see themselves as normal, even they are not. Hierarchy needs to be understood. The rich world is inpenetrable and much much darker.

Also there's a difference between the 0.01% and the 0.1% of rich people. There's also a difference between old money and new money. Just because you had a difference experience doesn't make this movie unbelievable. And it's also fiction.

The movie isn’t about rich people though. Rather, it’s about how power wants to preserve itself usually through corruption and manipulation.
