Laptop Not Charging Power Adapter DC Jack Central Pin Bent Fix

  • A friend recently accidentally bent the central pin inside the tip of laptop's charger's DC jack connector. Here's how to easily fix it and straighten it back again.
    Obviously, if your laptop doesn't charge, it can usually mean several things:
    1) Faulty charger. In this case you must test a spare one, either a new one from the store, or universal charger used in service shops. A charger might be fine, but the DC connector may be damaged. This was the case explained in this video.
    2) Faulty connector inside laptop or damaged motherboard charging circuit. In this case it's unlikely that you can repair laptop yourself, so better take it to service to take a proper look inside. A trivial case would be bent central pin on the inner charging connector, so you should check that yourself first.

    hello. i did exactly the same thing and still not working. what is the problem?

    • @DarkoAqua
      @DarkoAqua  Před 3 lety

      Could be broken charging cable or connector on inner laptop's side. You need to test charger's voltage output somehow (using digital multimeter DC voltage function to make sure it works within specs) or try corresponding replacement charger. If it still doesn't work, it must be laptop side, either connector or motherboard / charging circuit / battery issue.

    I was going crazy not understanding what was wrong with my HP adapter plug until I looked inside and found the pin bent. I found your video and using a very thin pair of tweezers I was able to straighten out the pin inside. I can’t believe it but it worked. Thank you so much 😊

    Just happened today. I forced my HP Pavilion charger to fit my old Acer laptop. When I wanted to charge back my HP, it didn't work. Turned out the pin was bent >.< So grateful to discover this video and now it's back to normal. Thank you so much!

    My pin is okay, the the jack( the metal piece that houses the pin) is bent & so falls out of my laptop. Can that part be straightened also, or will I have to purchase a new one?

    • @DarkoAqua
      @DarkoAqua  Před 4 lety +1

      Well, maybe... But it's delicate work. I think that in that case it would be easier to replace entire jack with a new one, but you will need some tools like diagonal pliers or scalpel or utility knife, soldering iron with paste and solder wire, and 10-15 minutes to replace it. You can also buy replacement jack with a pigtail wire (10-15 cm), so you can just cut the old one, strip the wires insulation parts and simply twist them around each other (+ with + and - with - side) without any soldering. If you don't know which is + and - use multimeter or short circuit tester to find out, riskier method is to test it on a laptop itself, but you may damage it. Then use some duct or insulation tape or electronic thermal (heat shrinking) insulation tubes to wrap them around (in case of tubes: heat them with lighter to contract afterwards) and you are done.

    • @DarkoAqua
      @DarkoAqua  Před 3 lety +1

      That is tricky, you probably have to open laptop cover and check it out from inside. See if it can be gently straighten out, or replacement has to be done. Good luck 🍀

    so what do you do if the pins not bent but the actual metal surounding it is

    • @DarkoAqua
      @DarkoAqua  Před 2 lety

      Well, you can try to straighten it with something like pliers very gently. If not successful, you will have to cut it off and put a replacement connector instead (that's the cheapest solution).

      Can you explain which metal part exactly? Do you have a universal charger with different adapter tips? Or you refer to central metal pin? If the former, you need a replacement tip, and if later you have to replace the entire jack, see my earlier reply below to other guy here.

    Hi, thanks for the video!
    I have two queries
    1.) I faced the same issue, I tried to push the blue colour metal pin charger into a larger diameter port of another laptop. But I did not notice that the pin got bent and I tried to put the bent pin back into charging port of smaller diameter. So as it wasn’t going in properly, I pushed it forcefully. Now I used a magnifier and it looks like the charging port has a circle hole in the middle where the pin has to sit, and there are two rectangle shaped holes beside the circle hole. As I pushed the charger with bent pin, it looks like the rectangular hole became bigger and it looks like a little piece of charging port (plastic) also fell off. The charging port is not in O shape anymore, it kinda became like a C shape. Now the charging cable with straightened pin is perfectly going in, but is the charging port plastic breaking ( O shape to C shape) any serious problem?
    2.) I used a geometrical compass to straighten the metal pin, now it got straightened out, but the blue colour on the side became black at some places (maybe this happened due to the sharp compass needle) , does the turning of the blue colour black pose any problem?

    • @DarkoAqua
      @DarkoAqua  Před 3 lety

      1) If it works don't worry, but eventually you'll have to replace it in a service shop if it stops charging. Depending on the importance / value of your device, that might be too expensive.
      2) If you just scraped the color off, it does not matter then, but not sure really.

    • @DarkoAqua
      @DarkoAqua  Před 3 lety

      If you can post pictures I could provide more details. If you refer to an outer plastic ring on the charger's side connector, it actually isolates positive (+) and neutral/"negative" (-) voltage polarity and prevents short circuit. So, it is kind of important, but if only small piece is missing, it probably won't make any problems. Eventually, you can replace it.

    • @babel5925
      @babel5925 Před 3 lety

      Just a small piece is missing. And it is charging fine now. Thank you

    I don't have the metal pin thing in mine, only in the charging port thingy.

    • @DarkoAqua
      @DarkoAqua  Před 3 lety

      You will have to check adapter somehow first in order to make sure it generates output voltage, either by using voltage tester or multimeter. It could be broken or cable needs replacement. Alternatively, try with another charger in the store, if possible.
      If the charger works, then the laptop side is most likely causing problems, either because of a poor metal contact or something else.

    I want to jack purchage only and replace it how it possible??

    • @DarkoAqua
      @DarkoAqua  Před 3 lety

      Find it in electronics or online stores, just make sure you get a proper one, there are different sizes and diameters.
      Then you must cut out the broken one and solder new one in place, some tools like cutters and soldering iron are required.
      Watch out wires polarity, red or yellow is "positive" central pin (commonly) and black is outer "negative" terminal!
      Some stores can do a repair for you for a nominal fee, if you don't know how or don't have any tools and experience.
      If you have a modular power adapter, get a spare replacement cable (alternative solution, but more expensive).

    • @DarkoAqua
      @DarkoAqua  Před 2 lety

      Hi, you'll have to replace entire jack (plug) with a universal one available in electronic parts stores. Some cable soldering will be necessary, so tools like soldering iron, pliers or knife to cut broken connector and remove insulation are required to perform a repair.

      If it's not bent too much that may work. But if it's extremely bent, then you can make it worse or even break it that way.
