I wanna live in the future where we are able to fix our own stuff and companies stop screwing us over. Nice video sir.
Me too, but unfortunately everything becomes cheaply made and Irreparable.
yeah they did it on purpose so instead trying to fix it by urself u're forced to buy a new one, look why they made DC cable fixed to adapter and then super glued the adapter lol
@@videogamechannels360 learn it bro. Never too late to try. Slowly, no rush. Better to learn with practice than to never learn it. :)
Thats in the past brother😫
@@JarlErikStoresund Hopefully the future will learn from the past. Look into EU's Right to Repair laws, it might be sooner than we think!
Everyone be very careful. I took my adapter apart that hadn't been energized for over a day and it still showed 120VDC across one of the capacitors. That can really bite you! Get a resistor to drain off that charge before touching.
It just happened to me when i opened my charger, what can i do to drain off the voltage since i don't have a resistor?
@@imadrabhi5991 You should discharge it through some resistance or you could damage the capacitor. If you can rig up a light bulb with some leads (that are insulated...) you could discharge it through that... Otherwise, it will dissipate over time, but it could be a few days. If you are feeling lucky, you could use a small insulated screwdriver and just short it out in little bursts but it might damage the capacitor. Wear eye protection, though!
Yeah I once died because of this. So be careful people
Too late, I disconnected mine and after a minute it bit me. Not too bad though, because I touched it with one hand. I then measured the typical voltage 1 minute after disconnecting it, and it showed around 300VDC. The capacitor is reading 400V. Ugh.
Reminds me when i took apart a disposable camera, it was like getting hit with a stun gun. :D Always wary around caps now.
Thank you for your very thoughtful & simplistic instruction! You are a champion for us hobbyists! Best regards & Safe Distancing!!!
This was a very straight-forward video. Thank you for getting to and staying on topic!
Glad you enjoyed it!

Thank you your youtube tutorial really helped when I was in trouble
Happy to help!
Thank you for the video. I am getting back my old laptop to life. I was using it's adapter as power source for my other projects, it was not attached with original cable. I resoldered them with your help. Thanks :)
Great job! I'm happy to help.
Broo, yyou made my day, Thank you so much, I have fixed my own cable and now I am back with you all. Thank you !!!
I'm glad I could help you!
Nice
Every time I check on CZcams and try to search adapter repair. The example will always be bulged capacitos. In reality, it is always some other reasons. e.g. broken diodes, optocoupler.
LOL that’s true!
Being a complete novice, after removing the outer shell (which was a bit more difficult than expected), I picked up the board without any gloves and it shocked me. So I decided to start moving it using 2 big screwdrivers (with rubber handles, bear in mind) but they must have touched and something sparked. Lucky for me the charger was unplugged (at least I tought of that!). Lesson learned: next time, DON'T TOUCH THE PCB, WEAR GLOVES AND WAIT A FEW HOURS AFTER UNPLUGGING THE DEVICE BEFORE HANDLING IT!!!!
The big capacitor must be discharged before you start working on it. It's not gonna kill you but still unpleasant experience I should have mentioned about discharging the caps. Sorry for that!
"and it shocked me" ...
as is i am a m_oron and stuuup1d
Such a great advice, sir. Thanks

Exactly the info I was looking for. Great video, thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you! This guide or tutorial was comprehensive and very helpful. I was replacing a cable on a Dell adapter with a spindle connector, and the colours were mismatched on the third party cable. Black - GND, Red - Positive and White - Sensor.
The technique to break open the case was very easy too, and it doesn't look too bad after finishing up. Most importantly I didn't hurt myself with a sharp object.
You explain it smooth like honey, thanks :)
Thanks! Happy to help!
Superb! Very helpful video, it really put me on the right track. In my case, the two pins that connect the socket to the board had come loose due to wear. I just soldered them back into place.
Glad it helped
Great techniques and advice in this video! Thank you!
In my case, I saw a failure of both the output capacitors from a cheap $10 power brick (the type that we're advised in the video to avoid). I blindly replaced the capacitors with a pair that has a higher voltage rating, and they also started to fail due to over-voltage; my 24V supply was putting out over 50V!
I haven't verified this yet, but I believe the transformer failed in a high-current use of the power supply. It is often the case that these cheap transformers use copper-coated aluminum wire, which will generate more heat due to higher wire resistance; this can melt the insulation around the wires in high-current situations. When that happens, turns are shorted, you get a higher output voltage than expected, and then electrolytic capacitors go BANG.
So, yes, don't buy the cheap $10 power brick!
where can we get the expensive power brick ?
Found this because I was curious whats inside these things. Very cool and thank you!
Happy to help 😊

Thank you! Easily managed to fix the broken cable! Was super easy to open with the screwdriver and small hammer.
I'm glad I could help you!
Thank you! this is aweosome! My laptop adapter just broke down possibly due to me wrapping cable the wrong way all the time. I wiggled the cable near the brick and voila it is working again!
I'm happy to help!
@@ElectronicsComputers You just got a new sub! Do you think I can survive on that adapter by wiggling it back in connection or it could dangerous in long term? I worry the re-connection may be have a small electrical contact that causes too much resistive heating. It is a 200W brick.
Thank you for your support! You have to replace the cable because it's not gonna last long. It will become harder to get contact because due to bad contact and high power those wires will slowly burn and brake. You can use it as a temporary solution. New cable costs about 3-5$ delivered! Of course if you don't have a soldering iron and stuff for it then it's a problem I guess.
@@ElectronicsComputers Appreciate it. Gonna wait til it dies then I may repair it.

Great video! Just wanted to post a warning. My LED was always lit meaning the AC cable was not my issue. The cable post DC conversion was the problem. I removed the case and then suddenly the LED does not turn on when plugged in. As soon as I removed the case I smelt something that most engineers would recognize as a shorted/damaged part. I looked all over but couldn't find any damage. I'm wondering if the power supply is rigged to break when opened. Or maybe some cap was shorted during the case removal. Anyway, be careful! Removing the case may make things worse :(
Oh, yeah, I punctured one of the capacitors with the screwdriver when trying to open it ) Hit too hard )) It wasn't working anyway and no visible issues inside, so nevermind.
And yes, you can short some components while opening, because there are metal plates inside, that are very close to other metal parts. At least in mine. So if you bend something, it may short.
Thank you sir for sharing your knowledge about mechanics with us 🙂
Any time
This is one of the best put together tutorials I've seen in the 11 years I've been on CZcams. It covers everything I can think of!
I have an AC adapter that isn't putting out 20V but the ground and sense are fine. I had another with a damaged cable and a final one with a good cable but it's really tatty. This video has given me the confidence to create two working adapters.
Thank you for the comment and good luck with your repair!
@@ElectronicsComputers I was successful with transplanting an HP cable from a broken charger into Dell charger with a broken cable. The retention piece wasn't there so I used hot glue to secure it. It now works perfectly as a charger for testing laptops as I run a repair business. Thanks once again.
I have 4 Lenovo chargers, 3 with broken wires, one that doesn't output 20V. I went on AliExpress and picked up some of the cables you suggested. Looking forward to fixing those too.
I appreciate your help ☺️

Well done and very informative. If you have one, a good automative trim tools would work very well for opening the case.

Thanks alot. My adaptor is now functioning..
Glad it helped
I couldn't get it open and tried with some force but did not want to gouge the plastic too much. I saw in another video to use Flux solvent on the crack all around the adapter. It appears this is Ethyl Alcohol. I didn't have any , I had Isopropyl and used a dish plate and put the adapter on its side in the plate and poured a little bit of Isopropyl into the plate and used an eye dropper to pick up some and put no the other side of the adapter and the ends also. Waited a few minutes and then I was able to break the seam at one point and then I got the screwdriver in and kept prying and used a kitchen knife to slide up the seam to break and just kept working it until one side was open and then just kept moving it and prying until it was free. Then of course you have to know how to solder , remove the top metal shield which was soldered to the board and then I could unsolder all three wires, noting white black and blue locations. Done in about 20 minutes total. I did not re glue the plastic together I put on two black twist ties. I know this will last a few years and then need to be done again.
Great job!
Hi, thanks for the video. What did you use to re-seal the adapter?
Just a regular super glue. The links in the description.

i have power from the cable output but laptop dont work, i put a friends charger and its working. any tip?
Do you know for a Dell 130w adapter dc replacement cable for an Inspiron 15 7000 power adapter? The one has a lighted end on the cable where it goes in to the plug?
The link for the cable in the video description but without LED on the connector.

Welcome
my newest charger, i made a rookie mistake and didn’t realize it was covered in a lot of fabric and i think it overheated, as it wont work again, however, i have another charger with a working power box but with a broken power cord, i was wondering if there was a way to swap the 2 cords so i would having a working power box and also a working power cord, and is it possible to do without soldering? i am not well knowledged about the topic
There are two way to do that. You can simply cut those wires and connect according to the color and then use electrical tape to insulate the wires. Or you can open the charger remove the cable and solder down a new one to the board. I'd recommend choosing the last method.
I have an adapter 12v but no current, Is the current trapped or leaked? and the adapter making noice sound
Hello my friend, do i need to super glue the case back together? Also when opening with a screwdiver i made a few small holes in the side of the case
It's up to you. You can glue it back together or simply use electrical tape or scotch tape.
Thank you ! I was able to replace barrel plug and tested for correct polarity!! Question: I forgot to replace the last of the 3 thin metal housings. It is super glued together. Do I reopen it the same as the first time ? Or is there a better way to separate the superglued case?
Is that last piece of metal critical ? It had two metal covers and two white covers - thank you 🙏 😊
I wouldn't do that. Just use at as is. Those shielding plates for interference that may come from your adapter and affect some devices. For example if you put your old radio very close to the adapter you may hear some noise. Other than that it won't make any difference, so don't brake the case again.
Thanks a lot. Just watched this because I am to replace an adapter's output cable and I was wondering how to open it up. I am not exactly friend of this screw-less fashion in components. Did they forgot to play Meccano as kids? 😒
thanks bro
Welcome
Hi how are sizes rated or identified for different uses or is each unique? Great video by the way, very thorough.
you mean capacitor size?
I just don’t now how to identify if one is the same as another. I have a lap top cord that the thin part has frayed, having some old ones (similar in appearance) I am wondering how to know if they would be essentials the same.
Thanks
@@KennTodd117 You didn't answer my question!!! I have no idea what size are you talking about. DC connector, capacitors??? Give me at least some models or upload pictures here: imgbb.com/
Is it possible that the AC adapter still works (and randomly fails) if some of the capacitors are swollen on top? I'm asking because I have a laptop without a battery, and I'm running directly on the adapter. The thing is, the laptop is turning off randomly, either during gaming or just by watching CZcams, but mostly during gaming. Sometimes it turns off after 4 hours of gaming, sometimes after 30 minutes. There is no pattern, but I would like to be sure that it's the adapter's fault before I open it up.
It could be but first check if your laptop is not overheating. Use some software like Aida64 to check CPU and GPU temperature.
@@ElectronicsComputers Ah, I forgot to mention, the temps. are 65-70 C when gaming and 35 C when idle (cpu and gpu), so I'm sure it's not an overheat issue.
Hi can you make a video for apple usb-c adapter with folding pins UK version please

what about changing the charger jack in the laptop with a usb slot..and Changing the cable with a usb cable ...it will so nice project and nice to charge the laptop with any Power Bank And Any Source
Hi, first of all great tutorial!
I wanna ask about one thing. The LED on my adapter is of and it doesn’t give any power out. But somehow after a while with it’s plugged to power source, it became hot. Based on this, what is your diagnostic on this? Thanx in advance.
most likely you need to replace capacitors and I'd also recommend checking DC cable for short.
Was wanting to convert my laptop to USB C because of an issue like this but I now realize I don't have too if I can repair it, thank you for this video I will be attempting something similar
Happy to help!
I fixed mine. Went to walmart with $20 bucks and bought replacement adapter. I took battery pack apart its jus some c-size lithiums soldered together. It works without the battery but i ordered a used one on el interneto. Thanks for video tho i did take it apart and believe the capacitor was overheating
Speaking from my experience there are two common issues with the powerbricks dead capacitors or AC/DC cables.
@@ElectronicsComputers Thank you for reply. It was very hot so i decided to be safe and dont have a lot of time either. This was a used one bought from computer repair store so im on third one now. Well see how long this one makes it.
Wow, I was a bit skeptical but followed your technique exactly and in less than a minute 'viola'! And I can close it almost like new. I opened this unit because it is pretty high wattage, 42v 3a and runs hot. I bought it to charge the LiOn adventure wilderness safari excursion power station I'm slowly and cautiously putting together. Uhg, this thing runs hotter than any brick I've ever seen. I'm certain this thing can't perform very many charge cycles running this hot. It doesn't look particularly cheap or high quality. Is there anything I can do? Vents, heat syncs or a fan somehow?
If you leave it disassembled and attach a fan somehow it will cool down your power supply pretty good.
hi sir please i have a question my laptop charger part of its cable get really hot so the laptop keep disconecting if i cut the damaged part and solder it will be fixed and if it yes the output power of the charger will not change.thank you
Just replace the cable with the identical cable and your laptop will work perfectly. The links for cables in the description.
Hello, I recently repaired my Yamaha PA300C power adapter for my SX700 keyboard, but I am unsure about the correct wiring configuration. The power adapter has two wires: one is black and the other is black coated with white. Could you please provide me with the correct identification of these wires? Specifically, I would like to know which wire is intended for the ground connection and which wire is meant for the 12V positive connection
There are as many standards for wire color it depends on manufacturer and I would never trust it. Check the polarity with a multimiter and wire the DC cable according to the markings near the the DC jack on your keyboard. Never rely on those colors when it comes to DC adapters!
i hope someone reply to this... my ac adapter stop charging only when i playing game but if i do anything else its function normally.. does this mean my charger is broken or my laptop broken?
Hi!. Do yoy think it could be possible to solder the hp cable to a dell power brick? I think that the L shape holds better than the Dell design
Technically they are absolutely identical so you can easily swap them.
