Its crazy that they cheered 😂 it almost sounds too good to be true. In my movie theater it was dead silent. But my theater also reacted to other parts of the film 😊
Yeah, when my mother went to go see this in theaters when it first came out, that iconic line elicited gasps of shock throughout the whole theater. My mother herself had to sit in a chair when she got home and contemplate for a good long while what it was she just saw, she was that shocked. Interestingly enough, even James Earl Jones, the voice of Darth Vader, didn't believe it. He thought Vader was lying to Luke. But it turns out, Vader was telling the truth all along. But it is this scene, and this scene alone, that makes me believe that you should watch the Original Trilogy first, not the Prequel Trilogy. Otherwise, the emotional impact of that revelation would be diminished.
I was born in late 2000, so I grew up with the prequels being released. I can see why you'd want to watch the originals first instead of going in chronological order, but again I was not the right age to understand. But believe me, I would've loved to been in a theater back in '80 to see the biggest plot twist in movie history and everyone's reaction to it!
@UncleMikeNJ That's actually quite sad that people didn't know that the Titanic sank. Not "boo-hoo" sad, mind you, but rather "that's so pathetic" sad. It goes to show just how far we have dumbed down our history lessons in school. Next, I bet you they'll be asking if Apollo 13 actually happened. Spoiler alert: it did. And I actually got to meet Jim Lovell, the commander of the real-life mission and a personal hero of mine, at his now-closed restaurant many years ago.
I saw the movie on the day it came out. No one knew darth vader was luke's father. I remember exactly what the audience did. There was a moment of silence for about 2 seconds.. then it went crazy. Yeah back then. .there was no social media for cast members and crew to leak things.
Where was this? In may I saw return of the Jedi 😮 over here in California and then finally in may 26th I got to see empire strikes back in theaters. It was really really fun and worth it.
ok I would've thought the audience clapped because its a legendary moment but the comments are suggesting that its the audiences first time watching...
Pop culture awarness of that line and Darth Vader father identity is so large that I also doubt they would not know it even if they really never saw Empire never before.
This has to be the biggest plot twist in movie history
Without a doubt!!
this and the sixth sense

Pretty sure this was shown at a fan event, so they are just applauding the iconic moment

And not just from a certain point of view.
One of my older sisters saw this before I did. She said the same thing on how the audience in the theater reacted.
"I am your father, your greatest enemy is your family and you will now forever live and die with that information"
Everyone: **Cheers**
It’s also a scripted television show
The crowd already knows. These are fans reacting to the iconic moment.
My theater went bonkers during this scene
Vader: No, I am your father
Luke: NOOO
Crowd: YYYEEEEAAAH!!! WOOOOO!!
The crowd already knows. These are fans reacting to the iconic moment.
I really wonder what it was like for people when they first saw this twist back in 1980 when Empire Strikes Back first premiered.
I was six years old when I saw ESB in the theater. It was a transcendental experience to say the least.
Luckily someone recorded it, you can still view it on youtube if you're curious
Audience cheered
Luke: *_"No..that's not true..that's impossible."_*
2023 and still as relevant as ever
I honestly thought the audience be shocked
Yeah but this was like a fan event everyone knew what was coming really good 😂
Shocked? It's 2023, if it was 1981 then everyone would be shocked at this twist it's pretty much common knowledge at this point.
@@bsimester2010It was even common knowledge in 1981 since this movie came out in 1980.
@@willmorris8334 1980, my mistake.

In Israel in tel aviv ! They actually screened the whole original trilogy
Just like when Ned Flanders's son reacted to Harry Potter and his friends burning in hell for practicing witchcraft.
Rod or Todd? He’s got two! Unless you’re referring to both of them.
Then I rewatched the scene and realized that it was just Todd with him.
Nobody cheered in 1980...dead quiet.👍👍👍
all the orphans cheering for a fellow orphan that finally upgraded be like:
those crowds already know that Anakin is Luke's father
HE TOLD ME ENOUGH! HE TOLD ME YOU KILLED HIM!
Incredible to think Obi Wan was right since in the Obi Wan show Darth Vader says he killed Anakin Skywalker and disney made this make more sense
0:07 -- 0:24
Did they do the screenings for the prequel trilogy?
Where do these high quality vids in 1980 come from? Camcorders were as big as a house back then!
ok I would've thought the audience clapped because its a legendary moment but the comments are suggesting that its the audiences first time watching...

So cool

I feel lucky to have watched this scene in more civilized times when spoilers were not circulating on the internet.
That sounded better than I thought 🤔😊
"2023"
stopped watching before it even started
luke: You were WARNED...what having sex with MOM...would bring!!
Darth vader: we do not speak of that
I am your father's brother's nephew's cousin's former roommate.
Spaceballs is such an underrated gem

do people actually think this is real?
No, this isn't real. It's a fictional film starring actors and created by George Lucas.
