To everyone confused as to why you’d clap for this part, go home. This is one of the biggest twists in all of storytelling. Obviously they clapped because they KNOW how epic this line is, not because they didn’t see the twist coming. Besides, if you didn’t see the twist coming and you were surprised, you wouldn’t cheer, you’d gasp and be in shock.

It's like a happening at times. Try that out for yourselfs or don't, but don't judge people whom are expressing their emotions in a way that you can't or think that it isn't "normal". It makes you look sad and bitter.
I saw an original copy of the audience reaction. They were in stunned silence. It's a great video on yt its actually genuine from 1980. Lucas actually got the right laughs too. The biggest laughter was han telling chewy " laugh it up fuzzball" of course the I know also got laughs. But the fuzzball line got the biggest laughs.
