I remember when this won. It was such a boring year and...oh not that again...yeah they did that again. Oh really did they yeah way to safe.
Suddenly HARD ROCK HALLELUJAH! ... oh hell yes.
Yeah, as nifty as I think this performance is, I've no doubt it's even niftier in context!
It was a long week of Eurovision, and Mr. Lordi's voice was pretty much shot in the final. It was a weird final here in Finland - we did not really expect a victory, but once the votes started coming in it was almost surreal.
Lordi himself said he was very sick during his stay in Greece with Eurovision. You can hear him not being able to control his voice as sharp as at his show in stockholm months later.
Awwww, the introduction of both hard rock and pyrotechnics to Eurovision. Oh yes, the pyrotechnicians were really booked for the next few years after this and pyros have been part of ESC shows since.
Oh, you must check out "Cha Cha Cha" by Käärijä, this year's Finland's entry in the contest. Käärijä is not much of a singer, he is actually a rapper, but the people loved his performance! He got most votes from the public vote than any other artist ever, but he became second because the jury preferred "Tattoo" by Loreen from Sweden. Us Finns cannot believe that Käärijä is at the moment doing a European tour rapping in Finnish and the locals rap along! That is insane!😄😄
If I'm honest, I like it cha cha cha, but I prefer Tattoo :v

Yeah but the national final was much better than the Eurovision performance. They ran around too much and he was out of breath, unfortunately.
I remember watching this for on tv when I was a kid. Just absolutely fell in love with the back vocal performance specialy during chorus. The harmony absolutely carried this.
This is the most accurate reaction/review on any performance I've ever seen lol. Thank you. The lead singer had a fever and even apologized that his voice was off in the final, and that most people will never hear the song the way it's supposed to be sung.

Yeah, that's how they normally film the Eurovision SONG (not singing) Contest - lots of short camera angles. Great reaction video though, really enjoyed your in-depth analysis.

Also, Mr. Lordi was super disappointed about this performance because he was under the weather and thought it was one of his worst performances! It's the one that ending up securing him the win though!
This act changed kid me's life forever, lol. I was dead-set on never liking growly metal music (I thought it was "bad kid" music), and then Hard Rock Hallelujah happened. Even with the so-so live performance (due to overworking his voice in the pre-show events), it easily took up residence in my head and has been living there rent-free ever since.
I got to see these guys as a warm-up act to Sabaton in Copenhagen back in April. His voice is much better, when he has some time to rest it properly, and they still do the full make-up and costumes (with wings!) today. It's impressive his voice hasn't given out after 17 years of doing that deep growl!

Great job Lordi! I was blown away when this one rocked over the screen back in the day. You paved the way for rockmusik in eurovision, expanding it from a europop contest to a music experience. Thank you Finland🙏🏼
Funny enough it took two rock winners before the US noted the worlds largest music event. Can’t wait to see if country style music will ever be accepted in eurovision. There have been a few attempts, but they never broke through the soundwall😅

This is a song contest, not really a singing competition. Also In 2006, all votes were public Televotes, and the public is more easaly swayed by a flashy performace to a catchy tune, more than to perfect vocals. In the end the entries go very weird trying to get Televotes and this hurt the reputation of the contest, so they had to change it When you listen to more songs, keep in mind that up until 1997 it was 100% Jury later it became 100% Televote until 2008. After that it has been 50/50. Meaning that the winning song (with the most points) might have won the Jury AND Televote, like in 2017, one or the other like in 2022 (Televote), and 2023 (Jury) and sometimes the Jury and Televote are so not in line that none of their favoites win (2019).

It’s not a singing competition. Its composing composition. Or at least it was in the beginning.

The "growling sound" is done with the (I think it's called) upper vocal cords, like the area you feel when you're clearing your throat. If done right, you can do that without hurting for several hours. That's how metal singers can get through hours of show and weeks of touring without damaging their voice.
I came across your previous Eurovision reactions about a month back and really enjoyed them, subscribed for the upcoming reactions to the other!
Just wanted to suggest if you ever find yourself having listened to most (or all) of the winners (or 2nd place or last place etc.), it'd be really cool to see you do another reaction of those initial compilations. Would love to see how big the change in assessment has gotten by then!
Keep in mind when you check out the song progressions that they are forced to have a specific length for the song
I know for sure that there is an instrumental breakdown that is not present in this performance because of it
Id day say you can sometimes doublecheck with a studio version just if youre curious to see how they differ
PS: please if you want to hear an amazing vocal performance look up "eugent bushpepa - mall" the version performed in madrid in spain (insane high notes should tickle your fancy)
Lol, I think you need to check out some more metal. That high shriek is a pretty common factor in metal music.
Edit: You're also gonna see a lot of beer in videos of metal live performances. Yes, they usually have a lot of beer on stage.
Edit 2: From what I recall, the whole wing thing was attached to something, so Mr Lordi couldn't walk throughout the performance in order to have the wings (which he still unfolds live, really cool).
Also, holy hell, I never listened to Lordi sped up like that. That sounds hilarious!
The harmony is what makes the song. People have said that it is not the female doing the harmonies, but more the backing singer on the right.
She is doing the main harmonies. Leena that is.
@@hextatik_sound No, she is not!!! Pasi Rantanen, the lead singer of finnish power metal band Thunderstone is doing it. He is not a member of Lordi, but they brought him with them to Eurovision because they wanted his power to the harmonies and chorus. During Eurovision week in Athens, Mr. Lordi HIMSELF stated in an interview that it is indeed Pasi Rantanen who is doing the harmonies!! He is the one in the "Kiss mask" and black cape! You should listen to him singing with his band and you will understand that it is clearly him doing the harmonies. He is an amazing vocalist.

In the UK, people will probably be going to fireworks/bonfire displays on Saturday and Sunday night for November 5th Guy Fawkes day.
Actually this wasnt their first performance that day. This is the performance they made after winning the contest so I guess their emotions and even being tired made him having a bit lower performance.
0h don't you know SCREAMO? xD Mr L mixes growl with screaming and that's the "halleluuujaaaaah!!" part, of course he might sound different live depending on
but since you thought he "lost" his girth for a second in the verse haha i'd like to point out that's just his vocal style, he even mixes in soft tones with the growl, his clean vocals are quite high so he is very capable of singing clean too ;) on their latest album there's a country ballad called 'the bride' you should listen to if you wanna hear Mr Lordi sing clean

I've just realised that both the rock winners of Eurovision have the lead singer wearing some serious platforms - Maneskin's singer had some fairly serious platform boots too. Ironically some Eurovision winners have performed barefoot too.

Remember that year, did not believe my eyes. Zitti E Bouni is still my first in Eurovision. Then it´s Käärijäs chachacha. (natural talent - I spend all my money to go to his gigs this year). My country Sweden is good but too pretentious and serious. I love FUN and ROCK.
@@coco5241 Hard Rock Hallelujah was my first winner after a break from the contest of 21 years - I hated 86 in general and J'aime La Vie in particular -I missed a lot of good stuff but some utter trash. I thought on seeing Lordi if this wins it'll be epic and then it did and it was. Zitti E Bouni and 21 made me into an adult fan of the contest - I voted for Maneskin and after the jury vote I thought my guys could still win this and they did. Seeing The Roop and Go _A go huge in the televote was pretty sweet too and I would have been ok with Gjon winning - he did deserve the jury win and Switzerland unlike France and Malta didn't try and rig it for themselves.
Andrew: 20:28 you said you dont know if this would win a singing contest, but you have to keep in mind, Lordi brought in something new. Every other years there was a singer and a dance group behind, every one was tired of it. Check the whole eurovision 2006 and you will see what I mean. Also whole BBC brittish network tried to stop Lordi from performing because they represented Satan and the Devil. Everyone wanted something new. Finland won the most 12 points at that time too. Breaking several records.

Jury has 50% and public 50% of votes nowadays. Jury is looking for 1) vocal capacity 2) the performance on stage 3) the composition and originality of the song 4) the overall impresion by the act

I always think ESC fans make too much of the "song contest not a singing contest" thing, because after all the singing is among the most important things in a song, and it's a perfectly legitimate metric to judge the overall songs on. However this song is a good example of the distinction - the contest includes all elements of a "song", and it's completely valid for an engaging performance and absolutely epic spectacle to compensate for simplistic and/or weak-on-the-night vocals.
I think it's important to point out the distinction because usually, when you say "singing contest", the thing people think of first is stuff like American Idol, where people compete to sing but don't usually sing original material.
@@TheYasmineFlower yeah, I understand why that is important, but I don't think it justifies the fact that under every "American reacts to Eurovision" video about half the comments are making that same point, nor that they almost never explain why it matters or what the distinction is!
