    We are so proud of our nordic countries - our fantastic neighbours, Finland. You should check out our other great neighbour - Norway. You should watch Alexander Rybak win a gigantic victory in Eurovision Song Contest 2009 with his "Fairytale".

    I perfectly remember that eurovision year. We spanish metalheads were sending our SMS votes as psychos, some of us first and last time simultaneously interested in the show. 🤣

      I remember this was the best moment at all middle school class discos hahaha, it was always the last song aswell, the grand finale.

      It's so nice to hear as a Finn. I mean normally we are out with null point, deservedly so. But metal is something that we excel at. These contests are a really nice, they bring us Europeans together. I love Spanish culture and food and have met and lived/worked with so many lovely Spanish persons. Love from Finland.

    I remember that year. The ESC was in Greece so a rather warm country and the whole band stayed in costume the entire time (similar to Norway in 2022). There were news reports showing them on a hotel roof terrace in the sun enjoying cocktails in full gear. Nobody had really known how they looked like or who really was below the masks. It took months after the contest until some "journalist" managed to snap a picture of Mr. Lordi from far away. Lordi, Finland 2008 and Finland 2015 were the only ESC participants I had seen live before they were at ESC. Lordi because they toured Europe the year before ESC and the other two because I moved to the country in 2007.

    Lordi has had a rather successful career, both before an after this. Not a household name by any means, but successful nontheless. Their debut album came out in 2002, and ever since they've released an album every two years or so, until last year, when they released seven at once as a response to covid cutting their tour short.

    Damn, so many things changed after this winning performance. I mean, let's face it, 2007 (countries trying to 'Outweird each other' was a weird year but Eurovision was never the same after this winning.

    This was the first EVER "heavy metal" band to get put into the grand final ... it was a shock to the system!
    I voted for them - "wasted" 10 pence over the phone for something I knew would never win, just because I felt so entertained ...
    ... they won! 😃
    Since then, there have been multiple attempts at heavy metal in Eurovision - but there's something missing in most of them.
    Last year, Finland did a great heavy metal song - but Italy's Manneskin - also doing heavy metal - won out.
    But - inbetween - we had Portugal's jazz waltz dreamy classic. The complete opposite.
    That's Eurovision! - don't even try to find a winning formula, just have fun

    • @jazzx251
      @jazzx251 Před rokem

      @Rowan_Something NO!
      When it began in the 50s, with no satellite TV at all - they would simply phone up each country live on air.
      Each "jury" would then give out their points.
      But it was obvious that something naughty was going on - Greece's "jury" always gave 12 points to Cyprus - and vice versa ... even though both of their songs sucked, year after year after year ....
      You weren't going to get a europe-wide phone/text vote until much later
      There was a short period where it was ALL phone-in votes.
      But then they made it 50% jury ("made up of five music industry professionals in each country") and 50% popular telephone vote across the continent, the format we have today

    In answer to your question from towards the start of the video: Lordi were already a well established band before the entered Eurovision, and continued to have a successful career after. Hell, just a few months ago (as of posting this) I saw them live.

    This was such a great victory, metalheads have this plot to overthrow Eurovision paradigm and make it shift to more heavier stuff.
    Saw them in reymyre, Sweden around 2010 maybe

    They recently released 7 albums at the same time😂. All were different styles including a disco one, which was hilarious (and actually very good).
    Seen them a few times and always a lot of fun. They don't play arenas here but they have a decent following that will come out and see them!

    Sixteen studio albums(i think + other random tracks), a proper full length horror called 'Dark floors' that id highly recommend and a few line up changes later Lordi are doing fine, they just released a 100+ track album but could have made it 200+ track if they'd been allowed. while their not everyone cup of tea they mean the world to me, their brand of positivity & escapism has made the past 20 years just about bearable. Check them out they only seem to get better and stronger....great reaction video, like it alot :D

    Their Polandrock 2019 show is probably the best live version you'll find on YT (other than their live recorded tour - Recordead), alternatively there is a half hour of their scream stream lockdown event
    Just if you're interested :)

    To mention a couple of other Eurovision Wins from my Nordic Neighbours that I loved:
    Norway with Alexander Rybak - Fairytale in 2009 and Denmark with Olsen Brothers - Fly on the Wings of Love in 2000.

    This song is popular? O.O I dunno about that one... I mean, I have not heard anything from this band SINCE that performance back in 2006. xD Greetings from Sweden. But I do remember that due to the unique nature of this performance, it was spoken about for a few years afterwards, but then, silence.

      Also they were already veterans at the end of their career when they won this, and it not only revitalized them, but shoot them on a completely new level of fame. For years European tourists flocked to, which happens to be my hometown, where Lordi was from

  • @sussie5463

    I can't deny I was chocked that they won. I love rock but hardcore rock and/or metal is a little bit too hard for my taste. (there are always exceptions tho!) I prefer the more mellow and softer kind that others might find a bit boring. I got my 80's rock to thank for that I guess. Rock ballads=Love
    There are always at least one rock song in Eurovision, (and there is almost always one in the Swedish competition as well), but they very rarely do well and when they do it seems it's because there have been too many similar winning songs in a row, most of which are pop, like the audience need something very different ever so often. So yes, I was shocked Lordi won. But it was a nice shock even if it wasn't to my personal taste. I am all for variety in that competition especially when there are so many same, same and boy did Lorid stand out!
    Last year was also a rock win with Italy's Måneskin (=Danish for Moonlight btw) but I liked Finland's Blind Channel better last year as it was more to my taste. And again this year with The Rasmus with a rock-ish song that took me back some 20 years. (I just loved that band in the mid 2000's and now I got to see them again and renewed my love for them full force)
