For those asking why I categorised this as a "Hidden Gem" I mentioned at the beginning how a language barrier is present. But not only that, the show merely being animated will cause it to be dismissed by people.
Ask the guy on the street what Star Trek/Star Wars is and they'll know even if they're not fans. Ask them what Space Battleship Yamato is and they likely won't have a clue.
True. I first encountered Space Battleship Yamato when I saw it's model kits while searching for the next Gundam to build.

You are way late on this one I grew up on it in japan and in the states. It aired as star blazers in 1979 parts 1 and 2 (3 never aired in the states) we all loved it as kids growing up. GOD this show is criminally forgotten in the west, so glad this popped up in my feed. Uchuu Senkan Yamato is probably one of if not the favorite franchise of mine, and I cannot wait for the upcoming continuation this fall.

'Star Blazers' was on the local tv station here in Seattle in the late 70's. I still remember when i was 5 years old it would come on at 7am and i would be SOO pissed if ever missed an episode. I didn't have an alarm clock.
It was on for years and switched between mornings and afternoons. It was very popular. It got replaced by Robotec eventually which was newer and shinier. They had the Quest for Iscandar and the Comet Empire. Nothing after that.

And the Yamato's iconic Wave Motion Cannon has pretty much found it's way into every other franchise in some way. Even the Enterprise D managed to turn its deflector dish into a giant cannon (which unfortunately didn't even make the Borg blink LOL).
The Enterprise-D even had a sister ship named Yamato the production staff named their Galaxy glass ship after the ship in this series because they were fans of it...like me👍🏾

Remember Doctor Rodney McKay’s issue with the Ancient’s cannon which used Vacuum Energy at a deserted planet, and how it blew and destroyed half that solar system...
Or yet again Doctor McKay issue with Atlantis’ ZPM (Vacuum Energy) overloading because the Goa’ul implanted a boobytrap... the entire Solar System would go away, his words.
The UN Yamato’s main gun is like that... not even V’ger’s plasma torpedos are near comparison. It’s too much... Starsha knew, her civilization used it... that was the big drama, badly written maybe, all about.
LOL, I am a fan of this, that and... damn it McKay and Sheppard being “space idiots”, and “O’Neill... 2 L’s!”... and shame but Star Trek is way death! Damn Marxism, damn it to hell!

Mr Dunk I don’t know Stargate but it depends on who durable it is against weapons such as antimatter etc. We’ve seen a Gamilas dreadnought take Yamato’s shock cannons (stronger the the Gamilas’s positron weapons) to its frontal armor and not flinch, yet class of ship is easily destroyed by the Flame Strike Gun which although powerful pales compared to the Wave Motion Gun. (SPOILERS AHEAD FOR 2199 AND THE CR YAMATO 3 VIDEOGAME, READ MY NEXT COMMENT AT YOUR OWN RISK)
We also have the Dessler Cannon. In 2199 the Dessler Cannon is able to destroy a gas giant planet with a single hit. It was arguably boosted but that’s a whole other debate. In one of the Yamato video games the Dessler Cannon and Wave Motion Gun somehow end up firing at the same time and the beams strike one another... the Wave Motion pushes the Dessler Cannon’s beam back straight through Dessler’s flagship. So unless the Stargate ship can survive a direct hit from a weapon capable of destroying a gas giant then its chances of survival are poor.

Hell Yeah! this would blow kids minds today, with plots, action, drama, impending doom of violence's and that was the American version, great story. Mark, Nova, Sanders and I.Q.-9. Deslocks chants of his name while walking in the crowds, sounds like an evil dictator.

I'm about to turn 56, and it's on a playlist on my smartphone.
This was a joy of my childhood. I used to tape the audio off the TV using a portable tape machine (that's how old I am!) and actually still have the tapes in a box somewhere. This series is awesome.
I did this too! No VCRs yet, so I used a cassette recorder to save the audio. I still have mine in a shoebox somewhere I’m sure. Amazing that I’m not the only one!

I thought that I was the only one who did that! I loved the theme song so much that I recorded it on a cassette tape player and hoped that nobody in the neighborhood would be honking horns or talking; today's youths have it immensely easier, but I still maintain that the quality of much of the media has diminished.

I did the same thing, then went and recorded over it! I recorded mainly for the music, though I also managed to get what I call Desslok's Soliloquy, when he sees that Wildstar and Nova love Earth as much as he loves Gamilon. Shame I don't have all that music and such anymore.
The series "Starblazers" was my first taste of how good continuity could be in a cartoon. Little did I know this was a huge thing in almost all Japanese shows, but we weren't seeing much in our westernized shows. Great explanation.
Indeed. I first saw this as a kid in the 80s and was in love with this show. Followed by Macross (which I didn't know the title of at the time), which was eventually brought over and mangled by Harmony Gold into Robotech (Still liked it, just wish they had kept it more to the original).
Most cartoon shows that I watched only lasted a dozen episodes with me because I quickly realised that no matter what happened in a single show, they always ended up right back where they began. No real progress was ever made, if the show was western animation. "Star Blazers" (it was two words, not one) was different in that it actually went somewhere, both metaphorically and actually. It actually ended and had an actual resolution. That's something which most old "action" (=violence) cartoons were missing.

@@RowanJColeman watch SDF Macross. Its a very good series. Also despite being know due to the Robotech redub its not the most well-known sci-fi anime.
I concur with the Macross recommendation and especially the sequels. It may be hard to find sources for them though as Harmony Gold practically banned it in the USA legally so they can hold on to their Robotech franchise, even though it's been dormant for years.
The battlecruisers in Starcraft had a 'Yamato Gun'.
@@RowanJColeman i cant recommend legend of the galactic heroes enough, in fact it is probably my favorite scifi series ever. its essentially a battle between democracy and authoritarianism, and takes humanization of the enemy to the extreme because there really isnt the enemy.
As a older adult now I grew up with Starblazers as kid the recent reimagining in Yamato 2199 is a more polished (writing and artistic) of the original intellectual property. As much as I like the 1974 original in nostalgic way the 2012 version is hands down a better series.
Indeed, the 2012 is a much better series, but they did a huge mistake: instead of making Wildstar's brother Alex into a person, they made him into a spirit that guided the Yamato.
The scene where Wildstar finds his brother is alive, in the original, as well as the farewell scene between the two brothers were very moving. I admit I almost cry when I watch these scenes.
Too bad they were omitted in 2199.

I do agree with you, he should have had an actual scene where he is alive and sees his brother.

Starblazers was the very first anime I remember seeing when I was a kid in the 80s.
I don’t think the story line is better than the original, obviously the visuals are better with the better technology, that doesn’t necessarily make it better.
4:52 Two errors here, the Yamato had a ship to ship engagement off Samar where its battlegroup mistook a bunch of escorts for a battle line with pretty hilarious results in hindsight. And just in case you come across some drunken USN sailors... The Yamato was sunk by the air groups of the Fast carrier task force of the United States Navy, with the United States Air Force not existing as an independent entity until 1947.
Normally I'd forgive someone for not knowing a piece of history that's not relevamt to what they're talking about, but if you're going to call your digression a "quick history lesson", you should probably at least check wikipedia to make sure you're speaking sense.
@@naverilllang Yep, and if you allow me to sperg on the series itself, the Yamato itself suffered a magazine explosion so devastating that it down more aeroplanes than its AA guns, look up the sinking of HMS Barham for reference, let's just say, the wreck of the Yamato would need a more extensive rebuild than the series proposes which should say a lot on its own.
Abraham Edelstein The original series was made before they found the wreckage and realised that it won’t be around to be rebuilt. The 2199 remake retconned it as camouflage, a disguise so the Gamilons won’t notice and bomb it to kingdom come.

And as long as we are talking about a "quick history lesson," Yamato was not built in response to Japanese setbacks. Yamato was laid down in 1937 and formally commissioned a week after the Pearl Harbor attack in late 1941.
I discovered this show when I was in Jr high, in the late 70s when it was branded Star Blazers for US audiences. Since that time I've been trying to explain how utterly awesome this series is. I just watched Yamato 2199...I'm pushing sixty years old..and felt the same awe I felt as a teen as hen I first saw it.
I was a fourth grader living in Tokyo when the original Yamato series was on TV. From the classic space opera to the astounding music, it was a game changer in anime in Japan.

@@natman2211 Invalid argument. 'Star Blazers' the original American translation aired on many US TV stations throughout the late 70's and early 80's. It was a staple of my youth! I first saw it on TV in 1978-79, when I was in fifth grade.
I will admit that the newer works have not been as widely distributed. I primarily blame the internet for this, as it acts as a pressure relief valve to bleed off the demand for translations and dubs to be released outside Japan since people can go online and get their 'fix'.
I'll toss in a bit about Fan Service... I give you a quote from Star Trek DS-9 as regards ST: Original Series uniforms...
Miles O'Brian: Engineers wore red. Command staff wore gold.
Jadzia Dax: And women wore... less.
Plenty of people who love sci-fi don't watch Anime. That said, loved this when I was a kid :)

Yeah, the phrase has been used pretty loosely here on more than one occasion IMHO!
.......for Macross/Robotech yes Yamato is a major influence but Gundam is from earlier Japanese Mecha anime like the 60s Gigantor and the 70's super robots Mazinger Z, Voltes V, Daimos, UFO Grendaizer etc & the 80s Voltron.......
@@rderyk Honestly, I don't think those older Big Robot genre's had as much of an influence on Gundam as you might think. The white base, and the Space Opera around it, is definitely influenced by Yamato/Star Trek. However, I think Gundam takes more influence from Starship Troopers than anything else. The zakus look like Mobile Infantry armor, but increased in Size. Also the name of Gundam is Mobile Suit Gundam, which a direct reference to the Mobile armor of the Mobile infantry in Starship Troopers.
I'd say Shogun Warriors had more to do with Gundam or Robotech than Star Blazers did.
I've read Starship Troopers, and the powered armor was an actual custom fitted suit that augmented the abilities of human users. A Gundam "mobile suit" is not really a suit. It is a piloted vehicle that bears a closer design resemblance to what I personally refer to as the "iron Samurai" aesthetic. An early example of this is Mazinger Z.

Yes 2199 was good but they changed so much of the story from the original ( in a bad way IMO) & 2202 was just plain weird🤷🏽
@@scifiguy26 To my surprise, I found I liked 2199 better than the original. It's like the only remake in history I liked better, but I get why some people don't care for it. Conversely, I'm surprised Rowan likes the live-action movie so much, as the 2nd half is an entirely different story.

@@mahatmarandy5977 2202 is awesome especially in the Space battles department you will see. In terms of graphics the live action is obviously amazing and better than the animes, but you cant compress such a big story into a few hours. And exactly because of the shitty compressed and altered story I really dislike it.

@@scifiguy26 Certainly that helped. I think the music was better, too. But mostly I think it was just paced more like a modern story. It had a lot more characters, and it explored the enemy quite a bit. That's just my taste, though. I still love the original show, but I was pleasantly surprised by the remake. I'm certainly not disparaging anyone who feels differently

Originally, the space submarine was in Space Battleship Yamato 3 (known in the US and the Land Down Unda as The Bolar Wars), and I like that it makes an earlier appearance.
Also, the theme for the dimensional submarine is just amazing.
One day in 1980 I came home from school I was 12 and found this on TV I fell in love with, very quickly all the guys were talking about it. I ran home everyday to watch it. We never got the 3rd season but when I did see it all the voices were different and the names of things changed I didn't like it, but the story was great. I got it all on DVD. Trying to get the 2199 stuff. I have toys and models and a couple of shirts. I love this show. The new stuff looks great. Thanks
2199 was one of my very first anime I watched begining to end. It took me years to get my hands on the 2199 DVD.
Sadly season 3 changed all of the voice actors and dumbed down a lot of the dialogue. Ironically the 3d’s season actors’ voices’ were actually closer to their Japanese counterparts. However, in terms of story alone I still think that season 3 is better than 95% of the comet empire season and had the best music out of all 3 seasons. The Japanese version “Space Battleship Yamato 3” is even on par with the original quest for Iscandar if not superior in some places.
@@josephn8325 I personally never liked the dubbed versions. They grated on my ears, I vastly prefer the subbed Japanese versions.
Josiah Wright Agreed. The dub is a joke, (Wildstar? Seriously?) but I’m still grateful for it because otherwise I might never have seen Yamato. I understand why they did in the original however as after WW2 I’m not sure how many fathers would have let their children watch a show in which the Japanese Navy battleship Yamato saved the world.
@@josephn8325 For the original? Yes, most certainly. However, I think that the reboot (2199) did an excellent job with the dub. Still need to get around to watching it with subtitles on in Japanese though...

As a kid in 1980s Philadelphia. This was the show to watch each day after school. Had a big impact on me in a good way. I had empathy for those characters that I didn't have for Captain Caveman or Scooby Doo.

Space Battleship Yamato was literally my first and favourite sci-fi anime, and afterwards I started watching coast guard college recruiting videos :P

I remember when I first saw Space Battleship Yamato. It was 1979 or 1980, it was dubbed in English and called Star Blazers. For my friends and I, it was not just a cool sci-fi action cartoon, but also our first introduction to Japanese anime.
Also, the concept of the Comet Empire blew out minds.
I remember the "Star Blazers" cartoon when I was a kid, most of my friends and I would gather at a friends house to watch an episode together. Was a good memory from my childhood.
My favorite anime. The presentation is so romatic, it is beautiful. Funny how my dad was a fan of the original Starblazers as a kid.
My favorite scene from the third season remains when they BREAK the 'space is an ocean' motif (just before the sub-space submarines show up) and the Argo flies "up" and "up" and the enemy vessels follow... and the Argo turns around, and spin like a screwdriver firing its deck guns at every directions.
I live about 50 miles from Dallas, Texas and in my 7th and 8th grade this show (Starblazers) came on every day about 3:30. I RAN home from school, with trombone in hand, to not miss any more of than I had to (I always missed the first few minutes). This will always be my favorite anime. I still love it. The first season was my favorite. They only showed the first two seasons here. If I remember correctly this was on here in '79 and '80.
I remember rushing home from school to be able to watch this on one of the UHF channels. I'm glad to see it hasn't been forgotten.
It came on a half hour after school got out.
Always loved SBY, which of course I knew as Star Blazers as a kid. When the 2199 remake came out a few years ago, I was impressed with so many aspects of it.
The CGI is fantastic - the shock cannons firing are just beautiful to watch, especially in the Battle of Balun, and the wave-motion gun now sounds so much better than the original. The technology is far more fleshed out and closes some of the old plot holes - the addition of the wave-motion shield was a much-needed and logical choice, as even when I was a kid I kept wondering, "How in the hell did the ship survive that many hits?" The soundtrack is the real standout - they recreated the original almost perfectly, which isn't surprising since it was rescored by the original composer's son...hearing the "Comet Empire Disco" show up in episode 11 when Domel is fighting Gatlantis made me tear up in joy, and the Garmillas anthem is simply epic.
The story was much improved by not only the introduction of new characters (most of them female, which is an odd juxtaposition to the still-present fan service) but with some aspects of the original universe showing up sooner and/or altered. The introduction of Gatlantis as an enemy to Garmillas foreshadows the 2202 series nicely. Domel was a powerful and compelling anti-villian, and even though he was on the "wrong" side, I admired him for his integrity and dedication to what he believed was right. (The final communication between him and Okita before his death reminded me of Kirk and the Romulan commander in "Balance of Terror".) Wolf Flakken and the dimensional submarine show up much earlier, and I really liked him as a character - I hope to see more of him if and/or when the 2205 series is remade. Yamato saving Garmillas was a good choice, as it set the stage for the unification of Iskandar and Garmillas and also laid the foundation for the 2202 series.
There are very few times in any media that I feel a remake is better than the original. This is one of those times.
My dad watched the original Star Blazers as a kid when it ran on TV in the states. And I watched it as a kid, too! On DVD that is. That makes the OG really special to me. It was crazy to both me and him to find out that there was more to the series than just the dub. Definitely one of my favorites of all time, it was awesome to watch as a kid for the action and is still great for the characters and emotion today. It's no exaggeration to say that this series helped shape my childhood as much as Star Wars.

I was searching Spaceship battle games on google and this popped up. I was immediately taken back to my grade school days coming home from school and watching speed racer and Star Blazers. That iconic opening theme. I used to draw all the time when I was young and still have several very good drawings I did of the battleship Yamato. I'm 52 now. I literally have tears in my eyes just thinking of those times.....staying at my grandparents' house during the summer while my best friend and I watched Star Blazers every day and recording the song from the TV onto our cassette player :) My God, this is a real punch in the feels........Where have those days gone.
I drew an entire fleet of ships with my own take on the Star Blazers aesthetic. Such a great memory.
Spacebattleship Yamato is also notable for having one of the most avid model-building communities ever! There are tons and tons of sets as well as scratch builds out there and all of them show just a tremendous amount of love and dedication to the iconic style of the show. It's retro, colorful and just completely embraces the naval theme in a way that makes the look just timeless.
Oh yeah World of Warships, Minecraft and a whole lot more always has somebody build a Yamato.

Way back somewhere around 1980 I made my own small version of the Yamato out of art modeling clay. I kept it for many years until it finally fell apart. I still have fond memories of making it and being proud how it turned out (at least for how young I was when I built it)
I loved this show more than just about anything else on TV when I was a kid. Would love to watch it again.
When the original Space Battleship Yamato was made the wreck of the Yamato wasnt yet found and it was Unknown how preserved she was. Thats why it was assumed she wasnt in such a had state as she turned out to be and it made sense in the sutuation to build the Space Battleship Yamato from the original. In the remake 2199 however the Space Battleship Yamato is just camoflaged as the original Yamato wreck as to not be targeted by bombardment. Thats what I think the reason was.
There’s a simple solution to that. In the SBY Universe the Yamato never had a catastrophic magazine detonation in its last moments and sunk mostly intact. Though this is a retcon due to this fact it being confirmed until after the original series.
There are pictures of the explosion of Yamato. The mushroom cloud from the magazine detonation is huge, and the explosion could be seen and heard for 10s of miles.
@@hmshood9212 then this bit of 2205 will break you! They retrieved the entire wreck of the original Yamato, rebuilt it completely, and resunk the restored Yamato as some warped anniversary celebration
It was the original Yamato series that got me invested in the Leiji Matsumoto's art and stories. Aside from the Yamato franchise, I also really enjoyed the Harlock and Galaxy Railways franchises.

Don't look for consistencies in the Leiji-verse. Each show is pretty much independent from each other, but characters are re-used and do cross-overs. So no linkage.
Apparently the Arcadia is in the original Yamato series, but it is well hidden in an armada.
I did also enjoy the Harlock 100% CGI movie, but it too, is completely divorced from the any other Harlock/Leiji-verse canon (there is no canon :) )

Space Battleship Yamato 2199 is my most loved Si-Fi show, as it brings a great combination of action, humor, eye candy and emotions to the table, in a manner that other shows don't. And while the story starts off a bit weak: restoring the planet, while the war is actually still going on and everyone just seemingly ignores the war on earth, is gets really good and intricate, with relatable characters and great world building.
Factual error: the IJN battleship YAMATO was NOT built as a "last gasp" measure against the US. The construction of the vessel was begun in 1938, long before WW II officially began. It was the world's largest battleship(still is), armed with fifteen 18 inch guns. While the Yamato was never in an engagement with another battleship, it DID take part in a naval battle off Guadalcanal. Its opponents were a squadron of DESTROYERS, ships about 1/10th its size!

The IJN Yamato and her sister ship the Musashi (I think) were armed with nine Type 94 40cm/45 calibre naval guns (actual shells were 46cm, the 40cm was a lie to get around like the Washington Naval Treaty or whatever) in three turrets, and had six 15.5cm/60 calibre naval guns in two turrets.

OMG, I used to run home from school in the early 80's just to watch Starblazers... and yes I still remember the opening theme to this day.
Space Battleship Yamato may be pulpy, but don't confuse that with it being lazy writing where the ship gains new powers every episode (unlike treks tendency). The universe of Yamato does a good job of maintaining in-universe continuity throughout, and the heroes make it out not by pulling a rabbit out of a hat so much as by utilizing the rules of their own universe in clever ways. The Chekov's gun trope is used frequently where a small detail mentioned at one point becomes a major help or hindrance later. A key example of this is a scene where they enter combat during a stargate style transit. In the "subspace" beam weapons aren't working for either side. What do our heroes do? They open up with physical cannon shells shocking their enemy with their "barbarism."

I absolutely adored 2199, my first foray into Space Battleship Yamato. So much of it hits the right notes for me, from story beats, emotional impact, moral ambiguity, sympathetic antagonists and glorious music with an addictive main theme that I never get tired of hearing.
I recommend you the anime : Legends of the Galactic heroes : ( a lot of people say it's the best space opera anime) but yeah mine FAV is still Yamato cuz its mine first SF anime!

Word of warning though, it's extremely heavy with dialogue often centering around politics, logistics, tactics, or philosophy. The fact that it's a sci-fi is more of a backdrop and not actually very important to the story.

Growing up in Italy in the early 1980s this was one of my favourites, even on the old b&w tv of my grandmother.
It feels so nice to hear someone praise this series. I watched the original series from the 70s and love the new series as well.

Historically, Japan had two super-battleships; the infamous IJN Yamato, and the not as well known IJN Musashi, both built prior to WWII [Source: Wikipedia - Japanese battleship Yamato].
Next, it wasn't the US Air Force that sunk both ships, but the US Navy.

I grew up watching the original 1970s anime, US version, "Star Blazers". I've not seen the 2199 version, but do have the 2010 live action movie.

2199 is well worth the watch. I'd also recommend actually getting the physical BD release from Funimation. The Dub is well done in both the localization and the acting.

The part where the Human attack first kinda resemble of Pearl Harbour for me, which makes it even more interesting
Although it’s not technically a surprise attack, the shooting first aspect was definitely supposed to be a stand in for December 7th/8th (depending on which side of the Pacific you’re on ) 1941. It’s certainly interesting to see how the characters deal with it. They recognize that it wasn’t the best course of action but realize that’s it done now and that they have to press on given the circumstances. In a way I think it reflects the Japanese’s people’s attitudes towards the war.

Dude, that's not 'glossing over history.' That's just plain wrong. The _Yamato_ was built (mostly, at least) before the US joined the war. And they sure as anything weren't building new battleships during the Pacific war; even the third _Yamato_ class hull was finished as an aircraft carrier. She was sunk by the US Navy; the USAF wouldn't even exist for most of another decade when it was created as part of the Department of Defense.
Sure, you could be forgiven for thinking she was a late war build because she effectively did nothing of interest before her final voyage to Okinawa. That's not because she didn't exist; it's because the Japanese couldn't afford to fuel her. The objective of the Okinawa trip was more-or-less correct, aside from the bit where the intent was to beach her and use her as a shore battery, not try to fight the US Navy at sea. Heck, the local carrier and battleship commanders were arguing over who should get to sink her; they certainly didn't regard her as a threat to the fleet.

@@drewayling326 It's not being pedantic if he's correcting something that is so grossly incorrect. The Yamato and the Musashi participated in several of the major battles in the Pacific, and the Musashi was sunk by American airpower at the Battle of Leyte Gulf on 24 October 1944.
Yamato was commissioned in 1941 and Musashi was commissioned in 1942. The third ship in the class, the Shinano, was converted into an aircraft carrier mid-construction in 1942 after the loss of almost all Japan's carriers at the Battle of Midway.
1979... Every day after school, straight home to watch Star Blazers. My friends and I were addicts. I have a box around here with several models I never built. Argo, Andromeda and an IQ-9... time to dig them out!
I only know and remember this anime as Starblazers. I did not realize it was so in depth.
For anyone looking for more Scfi anime I recommend the show Legend of the Galactic Heroes. It is about an human Space empire vs a human Space republic. With interesting characters on both sides. I also recommend the show Robotech is you are looking for more soap opera's with gaint mechs.
I'd like to second that recommendation for Legend of the Galactic Heroes! The Original OVA is still one of the greatest and longest-running animated series to date, but there is also a more recent remake of the story, as well as some really great novelizations too. If you're looking to really see space opera on a whole new scale, you probably won't find anything better anywhere else!
LoGH was a pretty big time commitment and the animation is a bit dated but the story and characters were so worth it.

I saw the original series with some Japanese friends, when I would go to their house, WAY Back when I was a kid.......Now my daughter watches the 2199 series, she is Totally hooked!! And yes, I do (and still have) the VHS tapes of the original series...all the way to the Bolar Wars!
I bought the first two seasons on VHS a long time ago for $300, which is like eleventy billion in today's dollars. I ended up giving them to my nephews and they threw them out without even watching them. Still not happy about that.

My guy, if a so-called anime fan hasn't heard of Battleship Yamato, they're not the audience for it and aren't going to watch it anyway. You're talking about a near fifty year old classic of the genre, and calling it a hidden gem is the equivalent of someone who claims to be a sci-fi fan, has never heard of Dune or Foundation, and has only seen the Rian Johnson Star Wars.
I'm a sci-fi fan and I've never in my life heard of dune or fondation.
Anime is still niche to older generations and younger generations don't know Yamato from a potato. It's not a stretch to consider it a hidden gem for the audience of this channel.

There's a classic story I remember reading (and it's probably still out there on the Internet) where someone is at a role-playing-game convention where many groups are playing many different types of games. In one of the games, one side has obviously used their "armor points" to create a conventional fleet of fighters while the other side has used all of their points to create a single, huge battleship. The onlooker observes that the fleet of fighters is merrily strafing the battleship and asks what the ship is. The "fighters" side says that the only thing they know about it is that it's named the "Yamato." It's been doing pretty much nothing for three rounds so far. Their entire fleet has gathered right in front of the battleship, ready for another run...
Onlooker said that the screams from the side with the fighters when the Wave Motion Gun fired right after were beautiful.
And a bit of Yamato lore which I read in (I think it was) The Reader's Digest:
The Japanese pretty much knew they were going to lose and they sent the Yamato into battle with no expectation of winning. Fuel was so short that the harbour master was even ordered to give the Yamato only an amount of fuel which would get it to the battle, with little left for maneuvering during battle and none left to get home after.
The Harbour Master was a clever man and managed to both obey and disobey his orders at the same time. He gave the Yamato the amount of fuel he'd been ordered to... and then used portable pumps to reach the residue of fuel at the bottom of nominally empty storage tanks to give the Yamato sufficient fuel for maneuvering during battle, with enough left over to allow it to limp partway home if it by some miracle survived the battle, possibly to meet a refuelling ship along the way.
Of course it was all in vain, but one still has to admire the ingenuity of the man who managed to give the ship a fighting chance.
I just love the way it kicks fighters outta ship, with all the sparks flying as they slide off the ramp.

micronoid it is in the sense that it paints the conflict in shades of grey and has a large cast of developed characters, but LoGH focuses a lot more on interstellar politics and grand strategy. It’s kinda like Napoleonic Wars in space.

It is a sci-fi series written by history buffs for the enjoyment of history buffs...
In many ways, another "Horatio Hornblower in Space" like David Weber "Honorverse", but with a tighter grip on plot and more emphasis on "social mechanics" (Asimov's "Foundation Trilogy"- style).
I confess that I like it, though I wish it actually had some sexual fanservice: it feels odd to watch 110+ Anime episodes with nary a free-flowing boob in sight.
(I think there was one in the episode where the Emperor's old favorite is killed, but it is used to show how the Empire's Court life is increasingly decadent and blasé, and the Empire ripe to be overthrown; It comes out very off-putting as a result).
micronoid I like LoGH, but I'm first to admit that it's very dry. And I hated the narrator overexplaining everything.
I'm guessing its the kind of thing that would be great if they retold the story and tightened up the story. Or if not that do a remaster the orignal and re edit the story to fewer episodes.

I bought the 20 disc set from Robotech.com it cost me $100.13 it has all 85 episodes of the series plus all 3 movies 2 of them on their own individual dvds and those movies are Robotech love,live alive the premier release dvd and Robotech the shadow chronicles the collector's edition dvd and Robotech 2 the sentinels on the 4th archive disc the archive dvds include alternate episodes of the American version of those episodes plus they have a couple of episodes from the original Japanese version's which were called macross and genesis climber mospeda I'm not sure if there are any episodes original Japanese version's of super dimensional Calvary macross but i do know the archive discs have some music videos,alternate versions of scenes from the episodes of the American version of the series and tv commercials for toys and trailers for episodes of the series the 20th disc has separate special features including the original Japanese version of love,live alive
@@richardgarrison2049 the interesting thing is Robotech is an amalgam of three different series from Japan. It's a note of contention amongst many fans because the US company, Harmony Gold, has blocked all subsequent story continuations of the original Macross series from being available in many english speaking countries. It was one of the first anime I saw so has a special place for me but I thought you would like the space opera feel with more of a character focus, of which the original version has more and continuing series connect and expand. Yamato has been my favorite Anime since I was a kid in the 80's. It was extremely famous here in Brazil.

Yamato was not built during the war, it was part of the original Japanese fleet before WWII started.
Also, the war was already lost, but Japan couldn't surrender while the Yamato still existed, the people would never understand, so they sent it on a suicide mission, knowing that it was pointless. That was the Japanese mentality at the time.

You should never criticise a show for sexualizing women or having fan service. Some people like that sort of thing in their entertainment so its best to mention it as a feature instead of something to be criticised.
Advice from someone that watched the various series of the franchize like a maniac:
Watch 2199. The series is fantastic and propably the best remake of any series or film ever made.
2202, the sequel to 2199 and remake to the original series' sequel is a mess that gave me Star Wars the Last Jedi vibes. Don't watch it. It is all stupid themes, lacks any depth, hammers its points to the audience in an extreme fashion and tries to keep the stakes high through forced escalation that ends up being ridiculous. When the villains send a fleet of 2.5 million ships when the largest fleet of 2199 was 10000 ships strong you understand that the writer has turned the series into a dick measuring competition.
The live action film must be avoided at all cost. It is not Dragon Ball Evolution levels of awful but as live action anime adaptations go it is propably one of the worst ones out there.
I liked 2202, but that is primarily because I knew there was going to be big epic space battles and I like big epic space battles.
Also, all stupid themes? Really? The theme of broken promises is stupid? I disagree.

As for the "epic" battles, just typing ctrlC, ctrlV for the various ships a few thousand times and uping the scale is meaningless when in the end the Super Mega Penis Compenstator Wave Motion Gun destroys everything. 2199 had smaller battles and they were 1000 times better simply because the quality of the CGI and overall animation was better and the opposing sides did not spam weapons of mass destruction at each other.
While the theme is definitly not stupid, i have to agree that 2202 is a rather messy show compare to 2199

Γιάννης Νικολάου eh 2202 is an acquired taste. I feel 2202 is only bad when it’s recycling the romance of the original Yamato II, or when they focusing on the wave motion gun use by the Yamato. The second half is much better than the first half of 2202.
Space Battleship Yamato had a HUGE impact in my life, it set the course for me to discover the world of anime when i was 10-11 yo. Now 55 and a life long anime fan and collector. Otaku for Life!
This show was my first exposure to anime back in the early 80's. I came home from school, was clicking through the channels and discovered a new, fourth channel. And...fucking Star Blazers was the first thing I saw. The show right after it was OG Robotech.

Star Blazers (in English, in New England in the US in the late 70s and early 80s) was an enormous influence on my childhood. It was equal to Star Wars for me (I was 5 when Star Wars came out, and Star Blazers was a couple years later). My dad used to bring home reams of fan-fold printer paper from his work, so I could draw on the unused side. I created some epic Yamato-inspired battles on that, and I would draw space ships that were based on naval ships. I still love that aesthetic.
The animated Yamato 2199 remake is really well done. It's one of the few remakes that I felt made things better.
As a kid, I had my hour of daily TV that no one else could interrupt: Star Blazers and Force 5.

As a kid, I loved this as much as Star Trek. I for real ran home after school. Usually missed the first few minutes. I would also watch Force Five afterwards.
No one was home at that time, so I could enjoy without interruption. None of my friends watched. It was totally mine. At 11, I guess that meant something. I ended up moving from Newport RI to Connecticut. We didn't get that station. It was a bummer. But we had cable for the first time. I found The Tomorrow People. Another show I just loved. Again, no one else watched. I was, and am a nerd.
I loved the original series as a kid, it use to play alongside 'Force Five' which featured Danguard Ace, Grandizer(Grendizer), Starvengers, Spaceketeers and Gaiking. I lived for these cartoons back in the early 80's.

Being a wee little four year-old in the early 80s, this is what REALLY brought me to anime--the title that started it all, and was an inspiration for guys like Hideaki Anno (the creator of another era-defining anime, Neon Genesis Evangelion; and who, by the way, directed the opening sequence of Yamato 2199).
I loved watching 'Starblazers' on weekday mornings before heading off to junior elementary school. It would be 20 years later when I would learn the name '宇宙戦艦ヤマト’

1978 was awesome for a kid about to turn 10. Star Wars had come out the year before, and re-released that summer. Starblazers was on every weekday morning. The Star Trek animated series was the only reason to be up on Saturday morning's at 6:30. Star Trek was Saturday night at 6, and Battlestar Galactica was Sunday at 8.
Speed Racer and Marine Boy were a great way for a toddler to be introduced to anime, but Starblazers came to the US at the perfect time for my friends and I.
Not to be that guy, but the Yamato wasn't sunk by the US Airforce (the airforce didn't exist in WW2) it was sunk by naval aircraft launched by US carriers. Also the Yamato was built before WW2. Funny story about it, its construction violated a lot of treaties and thus it had to be done in secrete. Thus a screen was built over it using basically all the rope in Japan.
History nerd for some bonus (and correcting) info on the IRL yamato:
Yamato and her sisters were conceived before WWII even began, intended to be able to combat the forces of the western powers outnumbered, as Japan knew they could never match the number of ships America or the UK could produce. As such, they were the heaviest battleships ever built, armed with gigantic 18.1 inches (460mm) main guns, the largest ever mounted to a ship by 2 whole inches in diameter.
In terms of raw stats, they were only bested in % of weight in Armor by the German Bismarck class, and length (by a few feet) by the much slimmer American Iowa Class. They had the biggest guns, the heaviest weight, and a MASSIVE appetite for fuel Japan did not have to go around, resulting in them mostly sitting around.
Yamato and her sisters were constructed in absolute secret, with their launch covered by air raid drills and the yards surrounded by special curtains to hide the ships. Workers were threatened with execution should information leek. In fact, the caliber of their guns wasn't known by the west until after the war ended, assumed to just be 410mm guns like on the Nagato class.
Yamato had one sister, Musashi, and a "half-sister", Shinano, which was converted into an aircraft carrier after Japan realized carriers were the way forward.
None of the ships had eventful careers. With Yamato herself being known for particular uselessness. Musashi was sunk by aircraft during the battle of the Philippine sea, in which Yamato would first see surface combat against the US forces off the island of Samar, consisting of a few escort carriers, and destroyers. Yamato alone weighed more than the entire US force, not to mention half the Japanese surface fleet behind her. Yamato and company fled, convinced by the American suicidal bravery that this must be a trap. (it wasn't. That was further south in surigao straight, which is a good battle to look into)
Shinano would be sunk by a US submarine before it ever even got its air wing, and Yamato herself would be sent on a one way mission which she couldn't even get all of that one way on before getting swarmed by US aircraft. Reportedly shooting down more aircraft when her magazines exploded than with her actual anti-aircraft guns.
Ultimately, Yamato was perhaps the single most capable surface warship ever constructed. Unfortunately, like her only true rivals in the Iowa class, they were built in the age of the Aircraft Carrier and were arguably obsolete before they even launched.

Yamato was destroyed buy a large USN strikeforce in "Operation Tengo" as it was sailing home to be beached on the coast to serve as a massive gun battery to repel the expected land invasion of Japan, it was a fierce battle that required 4 US carrier strike groups and close to 500 bombs and torpedos to sink her. Yamato fired many shots that day
