Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) Retrospective/Review
In 1977, in the wake of Star Wars, audiences were given another dose of the sci-fi fantastical in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Audiences were no strangers to aliens and flying saucers in movies, but that kind of subject matter was usually in the domain of cheap B-movies from a bygone era. At the tail end of such a cynical decade of cinema, it must have been utterly dazzling to be met with that familiar iconography with more naturalism, spectacle and optimism than ever before.

Stargate SG1 (Seasons 6-10) Retrospective/Review - Stargate Retrospective, Part 3
zhlédnutí 67KPřed měsícem
Stargate SG1 rode success for five years, garnering a passionate fanbase who now saw the series as the definitive incarnation of Stargate, superseding the original movie. It was quite a shock to these fans when at the end of its fifth season, the show was cancelled by its original network and one of its main cast members departed the series. If any other series was dealt such a blow, it likely ...
Star Trek's "Cinematic" Problem
zhlédnutí 121KPřed měsícem
For the longest time, Star Trek existed as a low-budget TV show. Next to sci-fi blockbusters like Star Wars, Star Trek always seemed cheaper and dare we say, kinda lame. But all of that changed in 2009. Director JJ Abrams completely overhauled Star Trek’s visual style for his reboot of the mythos. Though Abrams is no longer involved in the Star Trek mythos, modern Star Trek generally took his s...

In 1994 science fiction was gifted a new icon in the form of Stargate. Though it received mixed reviews from critics, the film wowed audiences with its imaginative concepts, impressive effects and spectacular world. The film became the sleeper hit of that year and it didn’t take long for the film’s director Roland Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin to start entertaining the idea of a sequel. Alt...
What Good Writing Actually Means

In any online discussion surrounding film, TV, novels, comics, games - stories in general - one of the most common criticisms thrown around is “bad writing.” This is a term I’ve grown to really dislike. Not only is this term incredibly vague but it also splits the craft of storytelling into a reductive binary. There is bad writing and then there is good writing. Which begs the question, what do...
Should We Fear Technology? - The Philosophy of Star Trek

Have you ever noticed how weirdly rustic Star Trek's future looks? Despite the presence of highly advanced physics-defying technologies, there's a conspicuous absence of automation and cybernetics as well as the lack of advanced robotics. Elements which are common to other sci-fi universes are all missing from Star Trek. Why? Patreon: www.patreon.com/rowanjcoleman Discord: discord.gg/BYxQNuD Sp...
How Star Trek's Future Works - Money, Work and Property

How does Star Trek’s future society work? A world without money seems alien to the point of impossibility to many people. The difficulty in answering this question has led to numerous fan theories, essays, non-fiction books and even some dismissals. So here is my two cents on the subject. It’s based on what we’ve seen and heard in the Star Trek mythos combined with my extrapolations and ideas t...

Stargate Retrospective, Part 1: In the early 90s, fresh off the success of Universal Soldier, director Roland Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin, sought to make a new sci-fi epic adventure which would merge the ancient and the alien. The result was the 1994 movie, Stargate! Though never lauded as a work of great storytelling, Stargate's rich mythos and striking visuals would soon spawn a vast un...
Utopia is Not the End - The Philosophy of Star Trek #2

The future depicted in Star Trek is nothing short of a utopia. People live happy, healthy and fulfilling lives, society is totally egalitarian and the world is full of remarkable advanced technology that can be used without risking environmental damage. A world free of our current problems would seem to fit the literal definition of utopia. This is why the following question might seem strange:...

John Carpenter, his range is so expansive, he makes a lot of his own scores and not afraid to experiment. I can go onwith all the awards and accolades and what not but let's just leave it at that. I love this movie tho.
I was in college when this came out, and I watched it many many times during its first run. I watched the "director's cut" when it came out, too, and the next "director's cut" too.
Now that breen are in discovery 5 season..
Quite a few comments mentioning the series goes downhill after season 6.
Great channel but you were way to generous with the last season.
For me the whole Spock/Uhura romance thing is extremely awkward, is totally lacking in any chemistry whatsoever, and simply doesn't work at all.
Honestly saying that Generations is not cinematic is not knowing a bit about film making. Generations is one of the most cinematic ST movies and it has some of the best VFX. They specifically made the movie a lot cinematic to differentiate it from the show.
Tricia Helfer made the series. She's perfect
I'm so glad you posted this
When you give James Cameron a lot of money he's going to pour every bit of it plus his blood sweat and tears into the project and as a result he made three of the highest grossing movies of all time.
...and here in 2024, Tubi is streaming this show for free! Not sure how long the series will remain there so get to it! 😜
Lavar hates white peoples.,.. just ain’t that just so un Star Trek But he’s gotta hate hate hate! Bad karma
And now the police have just become a second military lol
The origianl writer was a Mormon. its about faith in God
Thanks. I didn’t know how Lucas affected Spielberg before.
That's bullshit, cops are just as much the enforcers of the STate's will as the military. The only difference between cops and the military is that one oppresses externally and the other oppresses internally. Also BSG is hardly tyhe show to take political lessons other than "do nothing that the Colonial Government/Military does" because they are authoritarian reactionaries from Roslyn on down
Well done!
Crusade was great.
My fave bit of Scorpius joining was that for three seasons, you'd heard him talking to underlings on Crichton having to be this genius tactician to outwit them...then realizes Jon has NO idea what he's doing and most of his wins sheer luck. You can see him openly thinking "how the FRELL do we keep losing to this guy?!"
the orville, though it was mimicing tng, had some wonderfully cinematic moments when the plot needed it. in particular electric sheep and a tale of two topas. overall the show had a really nice balance of the two styles.
Love Verhoeven. As a young boy, his movies basically shaped who I wanted to be as a man 😅
It should end when humans can travel in space using something like a warp core which lets humans travel to other planets in only hours
Also Adama: *Deposes Roslind*
Proving his point.
@@talideonand being hippocratic
It was an intentionally messy show. That was the best part.
@@marcelo3939 You mean hypocritical.
Such wise words.... dialogues like this are the reason it's still my favorite sci-fi show.
Also Adama, deposes Roslind
@@marcelo3939 Well she did conspire with an officer to commit mutiny...so that she could satisfy her drug induced religious visions and hallucinations...not exactly a cut and dry situation
This so fits the blurred narrative and feelings a lot of people had post 9/11 concerning how far we should go securing our countries...
Truth.
Liberty is the mother, not daughter of security. Freedom form the existence of hierarchies produces harmony. Security is always an excuse to oppress others
I love the first Series of Space 1999 (not fond of the 2nd) but for me, UFO is so SO much better and is still awesome today.
Love the way the cockpits worked ... interesting tech
I hate vala worst caricature of a good actor ever
i like how people including wb themselves keep telling themselves that forever and batman and robin were bad because they were campy and thus made every following live action batman hyper realistic and grounded when the reason those two shumacher films sucked was the awful writing and the crazy stuff was actually some of those films only redeeming qualities lol
imo batman's world should be as darkly whimsical, over the top and fairy-tale-esque as possible. What SHOULD be realistic with batman is the character writing. ppl need to realize that you can make your world as fun and bonkers as possible, all you need to really do is focus on just making the characters endearing and believable.
I think you have grossly underestimated the number of people who would literally sit on the couch all day and eat/drink themselves comatose. Not to mention the hound dogs that would make it their life's mission to chase tail every day. Also, your analysis of the replicator making fuel to power itself violates the laws of physics.
The aliens only wanted to take the people that they specifically told to come there with the images in their brain. That's why Roy got to go on the ship and nobody they appointed did.
it's a BS show that's badly written. also, post scarcity? BS "we don't use money" "oh where did you get that? i saved up my replicator rations" pathetic.
Probably my favorite Spielberg film. A masterpiece and masterclass in so many ways.
Discovery's overuse of super shallow focus on the bridge often bothers me. If they spend so much on sets why not show more details in background more often. Wide planet shots are better sometimes for grand detail. Not every shot on the bridge has to have a moving camera, mix it up. Their book of filmmaking techniques need a rewrite. Also overly dark sets on the bridge can be bothersome if used too much and lack visual color. I think Strange New Worlds filmmaking is better than Discovery to the eye and more colorful.
I wonder if Spielberg was inspired by Altman at all. Nashville is also more a set of vignettes about characters united only by a single event.
You can tell this had the original " Spirit " of TREK, compared to the more generic NuTrek series they've been producing lately. NuTrek is more like a Michael Bay production, and they don't stick to continuity....
The answer is YES.... The whole point of Star Trek from then it first began was to tell a story that was the dream of Gene Roddenbery, an ex-soldier. He wanted the show to be about the military in the future traveling the stars. While sure there's a lot more to Star Trek's universe, the point is to show stuff from the perspective of military personnel. How they deal with things, grow, and change. Without that element it just wouldn't feel like a Star Trek show. Star Wars for example, must always have something to do with the wars, the factions disagreeing. Rebellion, Imperial dictatorships, Jedi, Sith. Yes there's more there, but people come for that.
I agree. Glad they returned to a more classic design recently with Pivard Season 3 (Worf) and SNW Season 2. I thought the STID Klingons looked really intimidating and it looked like the ridges were more integrated into their skulls rather than just slapped on the forehead. I think SNW Klingons are somewhere between TNG and STID Klingons.
Great video.
Got the extended Blu Ray and had a custom steelbook made for it as well. Looking forward to the voyager one next
I love this as a battle but simply can't believe that Kirk would be so easily suckered in. He would have raised the shields! (I know the plot needed him not to!) I do think though that the battle between the Enterprise E and the Scimitar in Nemesis was epic! (About the only epic bit of the film! Lol!)
The TNG finale was good, although like the subsequent streaming series, it's all about Picard; there's no closure for the other actors. With the DS9 finale, you see closure to all of the characters, which is different to all of the other Trek series. Perhaps any new Trek series will include character arcs, as they are trying to do in SNW.
I’m glad I found this channel. I remember feeling so sad when the last episode of SG1 aired, and then quite a bit of time had passed and a friend of mine randomly said have you seen the Stargate movies? And I replied "there was only one" he said "no not the feature film the two movies that were made after the last season" I still remember now almost running home to Google it! By then continuum and ark of truth for sale in WHSmith in my local town and I managed to buy them that day. I was extremely happy that day. 😊😊
I remember when Lexx first came out on the Sci-Fi channel in the states. The advertising was all about how it was a sexier version of Farscape. They really played up the name Lexx with the word sex. At the time folks there was a lot of pressure on networks to deliver more sexy content since HBO was schooling folks in R-rated programming. The show itself was so laughably bad that even on the Sci-Fi channel it was pretty unwatchable.
THEY STARTED WELL ALL OF THE STAR TREK CREWS - BUT THE BS WITH DATA JUST KILLED THAT SHOW FOR ME
I really enjoy the movie but the shows are what I really love
Honestly, Eva Haberman was such a supremely beautiful woman, she's the only reason I started watching this show, but I stayed for the fun and camp.
I played this game countless times as a teenager and unfortunately never got good enough to beat the game without cheating. A few years ago tried to play again during some work downtime... and I realized I can barely finish the first missions without pulling my hair out. Made me once again realize that I'm now a middle aged man.
