Suzuki Jimny 2015 review: small, but tough | TELEGRAPH CARS

  • If you need a tiny, cheap off-roader, the Suzuki Jimny is an option you could pursue. Sure, it's barely changed since its introduction over two decades ago, and consequently lacks the refinement and safety we've become used to in modern cars, but this characterful little motor is so hard not to love anyway. Look out for a replacement, which is likely to be revealed this year.
    We rated it 2/10 in our in-depth review, but don't let that put you off. Read our full road test here: www.telegraph.co.uk/cars/suzuk...

    Umm.. Some corrections: The Jimny is in fact Rear Wheel Drive, and not Front Wheel Drive... Struggling to get into the back seat? You're doing it wrong... Like most 3-door cars, the front PASSENGER seat has a sliding mechanism to make access tot the rear seats easier... Rebecca is using the driver's seat as an access point... Who does that?... Cool review though! Love my Jimny!!!

      +Brendon Carpenter And another correction to the Telegraph review: it does not depreciate quickly, a myth put about by motoring journalists who hate it. It's actually in the top ten LEAST depreciating cars sold in the UK. if you don't believe me, try and find a cheap nearly-new one, or even a cheap one less than five years old. It makes more sense to buy one new and get the warranty. They don't ever get really, really cheap as the off-road fraternity snap them up when they eventually get down to £2,000 or so. Curiously, pre-2001 cars can be worth more than slightly later cars because VED is much cheaper.

    I had a jimny as my first car & loved it - 10 years driving & never a problem with it, and my god did I put it through its paces. As a "first car" for someone I couldnt reccomend higher; wont go so fast that you can drive dangerously, the optional 4wd (which is rare on any modern cars nowadays) is perfect for us brits particularly when the weather turns nasty and it is so dinky that you can park the little beaut anywhere as it turns on a 5-pence. Bizzarely I could get an 8ft surfboard in the cabin (boot to passenger footwell) but I actually struggled to get that same board into an X3 - boot, seats down & touching the dashboard

  • @BelloBudo007
    @BelloBudo007 Před 7 lety +18

    Criticism of the rear door seems kind of lame. There's only just so many ways a rear door will open and the Jimny version is pretty popular around the planet. To be fair, she did take it down a muddy track and made mention of it's real strength which is definitely as an off roader that makes a pretty reasonable daily drive.
    Frankly the Jimny is amazing off road, even in standard guise. Given a 2" lift and a snorkel and you are definitely behind the wheel of one incredible off road machine that is also easy to park at the shops.

It will jog along at 60-65 all day and will go anywhere!I bought mine when I lived in
    North Devon where roads can go vertical or just turn into tracks through fields and fords,and it ate them up! I bought it brand new for 10k and I still love it!

    I have the 2014 model without the new dash or stability control. The ride is rough - you'd probably feel it if you ran over a sheet of A4 paper - and the boot is indeed small (get a trailer if you go camping or collect firewood) but it's a brilliant town car as it's so small and easy to park. Also great for country lanes as it's fairly narrow. It's not happy on the motorway in strong winds but it will cruise at 70mph quietly - the separate chassis helps insulate it from road noise and the seats are very comfportable. I've never really found it slow except with 4 up. My other car is a late MX-5 and I don't think the Jimny is any less fun to drive.

    The Jimny is a nice car and a brilliant offroader. A few years ago I went with one from Germany into the Tunisian Sahara and back. Though the conditions were tough the little 4x4 made and had absolutely no problems. I recommend to put better springs and shocks and a steering damper into the car for a better and safer ride. But that is actually all one really needs to care for. For longer distance travelling a rooftop rack can enlargen the luggage capacities. But this has to be handled cautiously due to the fact that even small weights on top of the small car will change the driving physics immensely.

    • @timwedler9192
      @timwedler9192 Před 3 lety

      @Famiglia Labate shocks and springs and a steering damper make sense even if you seldomly leave the road. The original setup is okay but not very comfy.
      How many kilometers has your Jimny done by now?

    • @timwedler9192
      @timwedler9192 Před 3 lety

      @Famiglia Labate The front axle tends to cause problems at around 100k km. Also the catalytic converter can come loose in its housing. Mine has that issue produces a rattling or clanking noise. Nothing serious and nothing seldom.

    With its weird crossovers, weird coupe-sedan fakers, Audi TT SUV and 5 doors, hatchbacks with lots of plastic on the outside to make it look 'rough', downsizing and gay laptop hybrid sportscars
    A breath of fresh air, this Jimny, i dont care its quite old. I long back to the 90's. Well done Suzuki for keeping this in your model range. I also like the Swift, that still has natural feeling to it, maybe the inteiror is tame but still, its pure adn agile.

    • @lowlow643
      @lowlow643 Před 9 lety +6

      You are correct, you know this is probably the only old school car on the market in any country today, i mean look at the engine, it uses aluminum intake manifold not plastic, it has no fancy variable valve timing to satisfy emissions or to stick it as a fancy badge like a VTEC, and i think it still uses drive by cable throttle so the car feels alive and response is snap with the input of your right foot not these electric throttle body motors, now i wish if they kept the low range shifter instead of this electric switch one but hey i cant complain, a ladder body on frame and front and rear live axles and rear drum brakes, aircon door vents are open and shut by a cable switch, also the steering is a recirculating ball type not a rack and pinion, and i think the radiator fan is a clutch fan not electric.
      Maaaan show me a car produced like this today in 2015, all these specs are made for durability and to have as minimum maintenance as possible, car manufacturers today cant profit from a car built this way

    Jimny's are rear wheel drive when the 4x4 isn't engaged. Also, people tend to laugh at my Jimny for about three months a year. Rest of the year, when the roads are covered in snow and ice, not so much. Great car with superb reliability if you need a small 4x4 but it's best to treat it as a two seater as the back seats are pretty much just there for decoration.

    We recently got a 1999 Jimny and I think it's a really fun car to drive and a very good city car (except for the bicep curls at every turn since there's no power steering). Not to mention, you can get it for nickels

  • @Goxy1
    @Goxy1 Před 5 měsíci +1

    Its far easier to get in the back if you get in the passenger side. Suzuki didn't design the drivers side as the entry point to the rear seats. The passenger seat has a lever that tips and slides the seat in one action, and a foot pedal release for passengers once they are in the back. The drivers seat is meant to put into your driving position and left. This makes sense as the passenger seat will always be kerb side, thus safer for rear seat passengers to enter and exit...

    It's a shame that Suzuki hasn't focused much on what made the Samurai great - it's simplicity and capability. The Jimny looks like an over-plasticized Samurai. It would be nice if they made another Samurai, but with alot of the things that Samurai owners upgrade to - slightly larger tires, 16v engine, body reinforcements.

    I can easily sum up the Jimny! Probably the worst car you will ever drive but for some strange reason you will love it and miss it like mad when you trade it in for ‘something better’.
    (I had one 10 to 15 yrs ago and traded it for a luxury car, and have been able to afford better cars since, but I still miss the little Jimny - I’m even considering buying another one before they discontinue it).

    It is the perfect run around or farm truck, I drive mine around my 160acres pulling logs around and mud running and even hearding goats, I have personally butchered mine ( single switch to start it, removed drivers door and air bags. I don’t drive it on the road 180,000 miles on the clock owned since new never done any work besides a clutch. It’s a shame suzuki are revising it, hopefully it will keep the 1.3, or a 1.9 Volkswagen diesel maybe even a 90bhp electric thingy

    Jimny is closer to a modern tank (or at least APC) thant to car. And I love it.

    • @AristotelisMitsiou
      @AristotelisMitsiou Před 9 lety +2

      Sinky The exterior of the Jimny is almost alike to the original one and the interior is as old as a Lada. And as with the 2 airbags... you're better off with the Dacia (even thought it's a 4 star safety car). Plus, the Dacia looks more modern, even in the interior (and I didn't expect to say that), it has the same off road capabilities and functions, it's got more modern engines which are faster and are more economical and it's cheaper too. The only thing that's better than the Dacia is that the Jimny will be more reliable...
      And also, what's the big advantage of the smallest 4WD car in the world? You can't fit your camping stuff for a start and you can't carry your mates along either.

    • @SinkyYT
      @SinkyYT Před 9 lety +2

      ***** Its possible the Suzuki may be more reliable but I once damaged the door on a 1988 Suzuki SJ (the model before the Jimny) and it took four months for them to get me a new door skin! That was in 1997 so the car was only 9 years old!

    First she, accurately and amusingly, refers to it as "like a Land-Rover Defender that's shrunk in the wash" but then later confuses the issue by referring to it as a cross-over.
    It's not a cross-over with a normal car at all and the comparison is misleading, she had it spot on the first time, it's an out and out off roader - and a very good one too*. Put some decent tyres on that and it'll amaze.
    If you think of it as a car then you'll only get into a horrible accident, it doesn't handle like one but then cross-overs can't clamber up the side of a mountain the way this can.
    *Albeit very small and low powered.
