  • The new Suzuki Jimny is built like a proper old-school off-roader. It has a rudimentary ladder frame chassis, live axles front and rear, and a proper low-range gearbox, so should you buy one?

I wanted to seek your advise on that highway driving experience, would you rate 7/10 for the ride quality compared to a say a compact hatchback car just for compararision sake... I just need that view as I am looking forward to the 5 door version recently launched. So that ballpark score (say a days long drive of 400kms .. compared to a cheap hatchback car.. ) your feedback will be helpful. Many Thanks. Most of mu driving will be city (60%), highway (30%) and rare offroad (almost nil) buy still want to own Jimny... so a score > 5/10 on highway will be worth considering

Maybe there’s different terms in different countries. In the USA, this is exactly what is meant as a SUV. SUV stands for sport utility vehicle, which is built on a ladder frame, much like a truck would be, and is 4WD equipped. Its purpose is to combine the needs of an everyday driving car with the ability to traverse rugged terrain for “sporting” activities. Therefore vehicles such as Toyota 4Runner, Jeep Wranglers, and the Suzuki Jimny are SUVs. On the other hand, AWD vehicles that are built from typical car frames are called Crossovers or CUVs. Examples would be Subaru Forester, Honda CRV, Toyota Rav4, Jeep Cherokee.

Naturally Aspirated engine - low maintennance costs, simplicity
    Live axles - low mainenance
1.5 liter inline4 is lighter and stronger than the 1.3 it replaces
Very light weight for the capability
100% flat folding rear seats and sufficient number of hooks for securing the luggage
    Great visibility
A lot of electronic safety systems for a true compact offroader

100hp for a 44 this size is great. I had a 1981 Toyota Hilux short bed truck and it had 100hp, i put a camperett on it and good tires climbed like a billy goat. In 1986 the chev 6.2 diesel only had 140 hp then the chev 6.5 had 160, and the 6.5 turbo had 180. The 1986 dodge and ford diesels had 160hp and the 1988 ford and dodge diesels had 180hp. Now everything has 200-500hp, i wish commentators remembered or understood that o-60 is not the way to drive and that driving from point a to be used to be enjoyable and not a race.

HP shows the output at high rev. The older engines tolerate more abuse, rev lower for the same output and last longer. Big engines are however impossible to get, or have to be direct imported by a private person, if you live anywhere outside of the US. For offroad, displacement matters, for all of the above reasons and because you can't ( or shouldn't ) rev in mud. Today, you can't get the standard Jimny in the EU. The 1.5 l engine is considered "too big". So you are absolutely wrong. People want decent engines, the Gov. makes it impossible, and the Gov. ( after blocking the good engines ) is fooling the consumer with turbos and high pressure engines that should have been installed in a moped or a MC

Give me the choice of a R Rover or one of these affordable REAL 4x4s I’d take the Jimny everytime. I have had many different off road cars. I recently sold my Nice Wrangler, and I now drive a Jimny. It is a fantastic small car, and I really like it, because it does what the more posh cars do without bragging about it. This New Jimny looks really impressive. One thing is, they have gone back to a leaver to engage 4x4, instead of the stupid Electric switch that was put there because the silly Magazines said they needed. Way to go Suzuki, this is what Jeep and Land Rover originally were all about.

The Jimny better suited to our country - with the constant 'rough' highway/city roads and floods during the rainy season and unpredictable road conditions during the summer season . The high ground clearance is a necessity... 4WD capability is a bonus... Might look at the last version model because of its small engine size might make more affordable to run given the weekly increase in the fuel prices here.

my friend com on it is less than $25k car, there a few very best value cars on the planet and one of them (first of them i would say) is jimny. the other cars with also the best value are: c8-corvette. porsh-cayman. honda accord and civic. suzuki vitara. might be some other cars like fiat-500x-diesel-awd-at. as for jimny the factory can not keep up with demand. they work really hard to supply huge demand worldwide. jimny is a huge best deal ever. people are in line waiting for months and years to get one.

This would make a fine commuter SUV for those who live in areas with heavy snow fall and want to have some weekend off road fun, if they have a second car for road trips. I use to have a 1988 Suzuki Samurai and it was great in the snow, but not on the highway. I've made the compromise from SUV to CUV and now drive a Subaru Forester and love it. I don't do heavy off roading anymore, but still have the capability of going through deep snow and light off roading. #Subaru

I’m very interested in this car. Early reports were that this car would start at £13k here in the uk which I felt was a fair price. But now, I’m hearing it’s actually going to be starting at £17k. If that’s the case, then I think Suzuki have shot themselves in the foot. I mean you can get a great spec Dacia Duster with all the extras you need for £13k.

    • @sbomorse
      @sbomorse Před 5 lety

The £17K is going to be for the top spec SZ5. I doubt it'll start any less than about £15-£16K in the UK though.
Suzuki are going a bit mad with pricing right now - the new Swift Sport is £18K! Still £17K for the top spec Jimny is great value considering what it will do and the hardware it's packing, not to mention it's stuffed with kit the Dacia Duster doesn't even get as options: full led headlights, autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian protection and keyless entry.

It's always amusing when reviewers criticise a tiny car for not having much interior space. Yes it is small on the inside. That's because it's small on the outside. You can fit 4 adults in no problem and I think interior space is on a par with similar sized cars (Fiat 500 etc)

This is a serious off road vehicle. The Jimny has always been under estimated for its off road performance. It will more than keep up to any off road vehicle. If you want a great car and most of your use is off road then why would you spend 4 times the price on a Land Rover? Besides... This looks way cooler than a Discovery. Personally I really do like this. Not in this colour, but overall its a great value and capable car.
