- How to Overtake on track! Welcome to Driver61's Driver Analysis where our head coach, Scott Mansell, critiques our subscriber's driving.
The idea of these videos is to use the example driver to enable everyone to learn and become faster, more consistent and feel in total control on track.
Today's video rides onboard with Gareth Montgomery in his BMW racecar. The race is on the Silverstone International circuit, where Gareth is involved in a race-long battle. Scott analyses the racecraft and overtaking to explain how Gareth could have been more efficient through the traffic.

Gareth, thanks for being brave enough to submit your footage for constructive criticism. A great video with lots of tips. More please.
Agree, thank you both. This was very useful for me even though I don't race cars.
@@martinkadlec6070 you can start racing sim !
I also LOVE this format. Between this and the full academy series... you have one fantastic Library. MANY THANKS !!
Thanks for the kind words! I'll make some more then!
@@Driver61 Just that bit of using all the road when overtaking... not hogging the inside explains so much and makes so much sense. Overtaking is done on the straights... not up the inside of each corner. Just great stuff.
Excellent call on the driving position, as a reference point, once I've been to an event with some professional Italian drivers and they teach us a bit on how to drive on the limit. They told us the right distance from the steering wheel is when you can rest your wrists on top of the wheel with straight arms without loosing contact with your seat. I always use that reference since then, and if I can get to that point (sometime in street legal cars you don't have enough room for set up...) I feel a lot more connected to the car, and safe to control it.
Love this new format.....I am learning heaps! Thank you!
I love this so much! Years ago when I learned how to drive a car, the driving instructor taught us to sit in a very similar posture with our hands at 9 and 3 0'clock on the wheel. I had so many of my friends tease me about it because they always put the seat as low and far back as they could with one hand on top of the wheel. I feel vindicated now. :D
I have a smile on my face when I drive past people with one hand on the steering wheel. Another one is, at traffic lights rather than people moving when the green light comes on they wait for the driver in front to move first. Sometimes, when the stars align, I, and all the cars in front go when it’s green and it’s wonderful 😂 It just wastes so much time!
This is great, a whole bunch of new content right before track weekend. Good explanation on arm distance, something I heard but was never explained properly.
Heyyy, I didn't mean you needed to upload another video THAT quick 😄 As always, this is great. Thank you for the tips man.
About three and nine o'clock hand position -- urban legend has it that there was a Swedish rally driver named Bengt Axel (!) who steered with one hand! And he moved that hand on the wheel! His hand speed was amazing. The other hand operated the gear lever and handbrake. An easy way to get wheel distance right is to put your arm out straight and the pulse area of your wrist should be on top of the wheel. Thanks Scott for a very instructive video.
Brother love this format of teaching...
This guided tour is fantastically informative ...
Finer tuned control w arms at 90 (but tall ppl will be outstretched)
Such great advice.... where to be looking, etc.
First video I've watched from you. And holy crap. As an aspiring pro driver this is so informative. Even every day drivers that stay on the road can learn so much about driving technique from videos like these. Fantastic job, I'm forever subbed. 👍😄 Thank you!
19:12 action and beyond was Great. What a Fantastic Instructor. Keep up the Great Work Sir!
Oh my god, was doing iracing the other week, end of the day my shoulder was killing me, kept trying to flex my chest to get it involved instead, but I was too far from the wheeeeeel!!!!! THANK YOU.
This format is absolutely brilliant! I've done Silverstone a couple of times and this adds a lot of flavour to the track, not to mention, things that I'll be doing next time I go there.
Great contents. More people need to see this
Thanks Scott, a general one! The more I watch, the better I get! 🙏 started sim racing 8 weeks ago and I’m so thankful for the professional insights of yours! Still tons to learn but I’m hungry... 😊 Keep it up and stay healthy! 👍
Great video and tutorial! Kudos to Gareth for being willing to share. This is my second time watching a tutorial video and I am starting to realize I am a terrible driver and have LOTS to learn. thank you!!
Brilliant, Scott. This format is extremely helpful, even for a sim racer noob like me. I'm sharing your videos with all my fellow sim racers! Bona feina!
Excellent series! Thank you for ALL your videos.
Love this type of video. It's really helped me evaluate my own replays and understanding how improve from it.
yet another awesome video. this is by far my favourite racing channel. thanks for sharing
Please, make a video teaching in depth the correct position of your body inside the car, the correct way to hold the steering wheel, how to correctly manouver it, etc
It would help a lot people who are getting into racing now
Love how well you addressed my two pet hates there! Seeing drivers needlessly feeding the wheel makes me so uncomfortable!
thanks for the hints, buddy! i like your attitude and your critics surely help a lot of people to fullfill their dream to be a racedriver. i just bought a sim race kit and try to fullfil it for myself.
racing in this series from August so great to see and learn from.
Excellent program !
Thanks for doing these. Great resources for learning!
What an awesome training video.
Great video Scott Mansell!
This was an amazing video. Learned a lot, even though I haven't gotten to wheel to wheel racing yet. I can still use these skills in the sim
Such an under-appreciated channel - but it's good to see you are growing regardless
Definitely saw a number of my own (albeit Sim racing) traits in Gareth’s driving. Great video.
Love this format. Hope you can look at one of my races. I have no skills overtaking and having watched Gareth`s video, I`m making many of the same mistakes.Excellent learning for us all !
Love this series!
This was really cool to watch especially because it wasn't a pro i felt a little closer to the driver just because he was someone who's still developing and it grounded the viewing
Thank You, Great Scott. I watch it all to get better at Gran Turismo Sport. Ps: I do not know how to drive IRL, even being atm, 41 years old. i was into BMX and did not care to learn it. Cheers from Brazil and i am looking forward for more info. You are awesome. Thank You so much.
hey man thanks a lot for this valuable informations. I am learning so much from you. I really appreciate it. Please keep it up with this format. And hope you reach hundrend thousands subs. very soon. Have a great day
Thank you for fantastic videos!
This taught me a lot about the mistakes I make. I make some of the same and need to work on them. Thank you.
I can't race in real life but your advice helped me alot in simracing great content keep up the good work
The information provided here it is priceless
Did subscribe, enjoyed the lesson, thx a lot for this video!
Wow, what a fun idea for a video series.
wow superb video, thank you!
Comment and question: I think the issues around minute 21 to 23 come from the fact that Gareth does not deal with the fact that he is much better on the brakes than the blue car. I believe it will be much better for Gareth to allow/give/fall-behind a couple of car lengths in the straight so he can do his brake-enter-exit routine and I am sure he will pass the blue car.
Please do a circuit guide of Castle Combe - find your videos hugely useful as part of my pre race prep!
Great stuff 👍
Great Video again. First thing I saw was also the steering
Loved that!
I just leveled up watching this! #sub
Great video.
finally..overtaking lesson..thanks man
Fantastic video! @Driver61, don't you think some of the corner exit over-steer is also from not un-winding the wheel on exit?
So informative.
Kool I'm loving these videos, I'm a sim racer that mainly drives H pattern no aids cars, older the better lol,
Was going to say his posture is difficult 👍
Absolutely smashing with the videos. Keep it up!!
On another note, I think that exit oversteer might be due to getting on the accelerator too early rather than a car issue, because the steering wheel looks very composed mid corner. I might be wrong, but I feel that's the case.
I have played a lot of Forza mostly, and a lot of people I raced with would get mad at me because if someone is on my tail into a corner, I will take a defensive line to make it difficult for them. I understand I am losing time giving up the racing line, and will not over-defend if I can help it, but I really love wheel-to-wheel battling, like a game of chess. But all they see is me taking "bad lines" and "screwing up their run" by not letting them past, calling me a bad driver. I mean, I am not swerving all over the road, I will let people by if they are way faster than me on a straight, but I have every right to take a defensive line into a corner and make overtaking difficult, and instead, I get a lot of hate.
Can i send you some of my Spec Miata stuff? This is great stuff, thank you!
I have just sent a link to my go-kart mate, who is almost beating me at the moment. I am pretty sure he just got what he needed to finally kick my butt for good 🤣
Great stuff here.
Excellent videos. Few suggestions:
Reduce or place your video corner ontop of footage so we can see in more details what you are showing and what the driver is doing?
The longer the leverage the multiply your inaccuracies in steering.
Do not bite into the steering wheel but have it close enough to do so if needed.
Finish driving coaches are now and again a little colourful in their teaching, but helped me a lot.
I have been following your advices since 4 years ago, it helped me to be a lot faster on track and on the sim racing, i have a question, how do you find the grip limit in dry conditions? is there any technic such as the one for wet conditions, i ask this because when i go to my local circuit i think im driving below the limit.

BRING THIS BACK
Hey Scott! Do you take sim racing races as well?
So want you to do give me some pointers on my lap of Caldwell. It’s my favorite track but still think I could make improvements.
Will be a video on the psychological aspects of track racing? I'm still afraid of crashing and speeding in an amateur trackday. Thanks
Remember that unless you have a lot of experience, the car is faster than you. Slowly work up to find where the limit of the car is, like where it starts to lose traction or where you brake too late, etc. Dial it back just enough to where you're quick, but totally in control and feel confident. It's hard to drive a car fast without knowing what the limit is because you don't realize how much faster you can really go. Most often, the cause of a crash is taking an unnecessary risk. I'd recommend trying to find an instructor at your next track day, can help a lot.
This guy drives just like me. I become distracted by cars around me more than I watch my own racing line. Its NY biggest flaw and I've been aware of it for so long but I cant seem to overcome the chase rather than just driving my car.
On paper I'm faster but in the race I'm slower because of that
I'm going to just state the very obvious here...!!! 🤔 This is some "Damn Good Content...!!!" 👍😎😉👌 Keep up the excellent works mate..!!! 🤜 Thanks.
I'm legit just curious, what's the point of damn good content in quotes?
is it something he says a lot?
I can feel for Gareth getting sucked into the open space entering a corner. I find I have the same temptation racing a Miata with higher HP cars. I find I catch cars in the slower parts of the track, but not enough to present before the corner and claim the line.
What is the solution?
As a sim racer without a licance, I have always been a left foot breaker and is now my defualt way to break. Im planning on getting lessons soon and am worried that having to learn to right foot break will be a problem. Also can you left foot break in a manual?
In a road car on the street, there’s really no reason to left foot brake. You’ll end up slightly dragging your brakes while driving and wearing them out faster.
In racing though, it’s a great practice! And yes you can left foot brake a manual car if you’ve already made your shifts while slowing down for the corner.
In a manual car, a common way to brake and make downshifts is to “heel and toe”. Pretty sure this channel has a tutorial!
@@mindofmyown333 that's what I thought about evert day driving and left foot breaking, you have to take you foot of the break to change gear and not be able to break... Thanks!
Left foot braking in a automatic on the street if learned properly will not wear the brake pads down. It will increase you reaction time to accident avoidance especially on interstates. Left foot braking on a manual can be master on the street but takes a lot of practice. Not really recommended.
In road racing left foot braking only occurs on corners where no gear change is required but you have to reduce speed for corner entry. It allows you to get on the gas faster and sooner exit off. I know personally as it has allowed me a greater run on a car I want to pass. When you have to brake and change gears you are using the “heel and toe” method and not left foot braking then a gear change. Heel /Toe you are at threshold braking, gear change. Then off the brake at your turn in point. All this has to be timed for Corner entry. All this is done with the right foot.
Can we submit sim racing footage? iRacing, Asetto Corsa etc?
@GameLord 23 maybe make a smaller second series for simmers?
Most of the advice definitely can be transfered over to the Sim and some things vice versa so why not.
@GameLord 23 If Drivers 61 is willing to do it for some extra views, I don't see why not :D I'm not forcing anyone to do anything, it's just a suggestion :D
Yes you can, but please include the throttle and brake visual data. Cheers!
@@Driver61 You might be interested in this clip from Project Cars 2. Although it doesn't have throttle of brake tracking data, it is full of overtaking attempts.

Whats with karting footage?
Scott, where abouts in the UK are you based?
towards the end mistakes are starting to occur. Is this because of loss of concentration/exhaustion, or worn/overheated tyres ?
Hi Scott, where is best to send some footage? I did send a link last week but you can't reply on those types of posts so not sure if you saw it. My brother could do with some tips and is in the ferry to Zandvoort as I type! Love the video's!
I'll read the description next time and not miss the first bit! Will submit tomorrow!
His steering is really holding him back. It would be so hard to feed the wheel like that. I love your videos btw!
God bless your soul.
At 3:00 the wheel problem is typical for the e36, a dished wheel should do the trick
Are the backs of racing seats adjustable for angle? Couldn't he bring the seat back 10 degrees closer to 90 degrees and get closer to the wheel that way? A little less laid back, in other words. To me that would put my neck in a more natural angle with my shoulders. Would also raise his eyes 2 cm in relation to the front of the car -- I don't know if that's good or bad. I don't drive race cars so I don't mind being way off on this. With me on a long trip in my dodge 2500, that's how I would do it to be more comfortable. Different world from racing, obviously. That's the first thing I thought of when you said bring the wheel closer though.
Gareth is my racing twin
Would you be interested in using footage from autocross if I were to send it to you?
Gareth!!!!! hands!!! great stuff tho
Here's a great video on explaining how to get to the limit of your fronts: czcams.com/video/df2BR71HTgQ/video.html
Added this plus smoother corner entry as suggested by Scott to my driving, and got from back of the grid to the middle (in a sim(rFactor 2))
Good video but... i am actually surprised you didnt talk about the "planning" phase which would have helped Gareth a lot in here, instead of lauching the car on last second decisions.
Dont take it to personnaly, i'm just being picky !
Gareth isn’t fast enough to use the gaps he gets.it’s his reflexes.
where is Gareth
How about video game footage xD?

I feel like his tires went or something happened to the power as he got much slower compared to the blue car and to the white from the back.
Anyway, I am not a racing driver IRL apart from some rental kart competition, but I was facepalming myself so much watching him race. I guess sim racing taught me a lot..
You don’t need to overtake if you take them out...
A forza fan I see..
It was just a joke but ok
please no more clicking subscribe sounds. they are annoying and only suited if you disrespect your audience! you can DEFINITELY find better ways into incentivizing your viewers to subscribe
oh, im a year late xD
throw up some auralex in your space, that echo is unbearable!
Please stop the subscribe animations, they are annoying as all hell.
I learn so much from this channel, then forget it all at the track lol sigh
