- I still love my Pelican kayaks. Their Getaway 110HDII is probably my favorite pedal kayak of all time. But in order to know where that vessel really stands in the industry, it makes sense for me to check out other foot-powered kayaks as well. This'll be my third brand's model which is propelled by foot. Time will tell how much I like this Wilderness System Recon 120 with the Helix Drive.

Looking good, Marty! Thanks for sharing your honest and initial impressions of the Recon 120HD. We can't wait to get you out on the water.
Need a video tour of your property!
Congrats on the new kayak
That looks like a solid and stable hull. Can’t wait to see how it performs.
Nice, can't wait to see propulsion and stability.
Great review Marty - sure looks like a useful quality Yak. Stay safe & well. 👍👍
Marty, we all know you love your Pelicans. But you're true and so creative, with your ideas. My favorite build to date, is the Pelican catch, with the outboard, swivel seat, and all the other added creative ideas, in that boat. And my 2nd was your other pelican, with the bait live well, built in and your favorite Tiki touch colors. Diy king bro. Epic things you bring us. Love my kayak and your ideas. 💯 🌊 🎣
Sweet! Really cool to see new and different products. I hope you get to do more partnerships with the Confluence sister brands!
Keep it up and keep it coming Marty, at least once a week for any content is good enough. Alright man 😊
Happy birthday, a little early, sweeet yak, enjoy my friend.
Nice kayak!!! Enjoy!! Thanks for sharing!!!
Great boat, been fishing from one for 3 years
Looks good so far
Still fishing from my old Tarpon 120. Recently welded some cutting board to the keel. I think you taught me that.
Looks close to my Native Titan 12 Propel. Nice and wide, very stable. But heavy.
I transport mine in the back of my SUV. It's a regular size Escalade, not the EXT. I use ratchet straps with the third row of seats out. Works perfect and no lifting above your head.
I'm definitely looking forward to what you think of this kayak. I almost bought a Wilderness Systems yak but decided on my Titan.
Definitely need to build a tow buggie for it the fits into the scuppers or one that sits on top. And maybe you can try you hand at welding and make a ball hitch bed extension for it. Cheers mate love you videos keep it up! Can’t wait to see what you do with this one
looks perfect!
Awesome vessel
Big mods are gonna happen I think👍🐟🐟 That’s a beast of a boat. 😎
Cool looking and sure it will be awesome! Only thought and dislike for me is a high seat? Like my butt being low to the water, personal preference? The fun will b seeing what all you do to it! Cheers man, hope all is awesome.
That egg cooker is the best.
My buddy has one of these. I’ve used it several times. The pedal drive can come up quick as hell and damage the prop (And your jaw if youre looking right down at it). Holding the rudder down while transporting is another issue. The front hatch is crazy huge which is nice. The plastic is a little thin, if you put it on sawhorses it will bend in time. He’s 6’2” and about 240 and can stand in it easily. The rod holders are also weird as hell. Overall it’s a solid kayak. It feels more like a 12 foot jon boat when you’re sitting it
HOW THE BOYS DOING ? HOPE TO SEE THEM ON THE NEXT .
I have a Recon 120HD as well. Rods are meant to be stored horizontally in the channels on the sides of the seats. Theres little bungies there and everything. Ive found i prefer it over storing them in holders. Great boat though for out here in the pacific ocean. Super stable in rougher water.
I transport mine in my suburban with the seats down.
I have an inflatable. The Pelican Pioneer( same as the Argo). Lastly and Enjoy Bay 10 pedal kayak. I bought the Pelican based on your videos of the Argo. They all have there place. I guess my dream kayak would be a 12ft Pioneer. They only make the hull in 10 ft. 12ft would glide nice and still keep the lawn chair seat.
Hey Marty!
Super cool
Thia is something I have never seen or heard but, its looking good and very heavy like you’ve said.! And I really like it. The real issue with this one was I am only 5’7 😂 and 152 lb so its might take me forever to put it on top of my CR-V 🤨.
Marty, i own a Wilderness ATAK 140. It's also a beast at 14'1" and 86lbs. I've added a 12v 55lb Minkota Riptide to it and many other accessories/improvements that fit me. My guess is, you'll fall in love with this Yak but you'll hate the weight. There's a trade off for most things. I'm 55yrs old now and as long as I can slide it into my truck bed, I'll keep using it until I buy a Old Town auto pilot 120.
I use a minivan to haul a 70lbs kayak, and wouldn't want another pound. It's the above waist lift where you start to really feel it
@@j-5087 I've got one of those kayak hitch haulers...extensions that I use with my truck and it's fantastic. But, I have to say if I'm going to deal with the weight of a big sit on top, the Old Town auto pilot 120 is the way to go. If you want to spend $4300 on a kayak. 😟
@@RH-qk5lt it must be nice to have money lol. If I had a better hauling system I'd be after your atak, very nice craft indeed
@@j-5087 $1,000 and it's yours without the trolling motor.
that thing is pretty nice.
I have a pwr 100 looking at getting something with more room, have a 55 lb trolling motor with trailer, would you recommend recon 120 over pwr. For more stability I’m 80 yrs old
Sweet
I’ve been looking at that kayak and would love to know your review. A few people in my kayak fishing group have them and like them. Others have hobies.
Nice kayak Marty; good video too. Knowing you, we all the mods are coming. LoL. How about a motor for the pedal drive; like a repurposed 2 cycle string trimmer engine. That could have possibilities. LoL. No rod holders or camera mounts, again we know that isn't going to work. LoL. Appears to be well made, but one the heavy side. More use of aluminum vs steel would have helped some, but I also know the company has to maintain the profit margin. Oh about the pedal drive conversion, the 2 blade thin prop is probably ok for man powering, but will cavitate severely with a motor turning it. A small outboard 3 blade might work pretty good if you can develop a way to mount it, so the original drive can go back pretty easy. 73 GOD bless Earnest K5EWM.
Loved my wilderness experience kayak but could not afford the. Helix drive.
Looks cool. About the size of the pro angler 12, I guess. I'll check back after he puts a jet engine on it.
I think this would be a nice replacement for my little pirogue. Get some exercise and still go fishing. Only one seat though.
115 lbs! Man I thought my 75 lb Hobie outback was on the heavy side. I don’t like carrying mine up/down hill from the truck to the water in this Texas heat
Way more impressive than $999 one Bi Mart had recently
that's pretty much how I get my Hobie outback on top of my SUV. Lift up, lean against the car, then slide on sideways and spin it around. Same way taking it down. Kind of a pain in the ass to do alone and has definitely scratched up the top of my vehicle. But it's manageable.
Use a bathroom mat. The rubberized bottom will grab on the top of the car, while the soft mat top will allow you to slide the kayak in position. I car topped for two years using this method and never added a scratch to my car.
I have a friend who puts a 9.9 hp engine on the back of his Kayak. only works with stabilizers. Will you install stabilizers on this kayak? Thanks!
What is your optimum demensioned kayak
For a kayak, that’s a nice boat… I have 2 Tarpons but I don’t get the market for this beast. Why not just get a River Hawk or Gheenoe?
Wilderness systems are far more available in my area. I got to look at a recon, it would be a downgrade from my tarpon in storage and weight. I think the recon was more designed for peddling than paddling
👍
👋😎👍
Hi Marty
I moved to the low country Georgia and am doing a lot of fishing from kayak. Please MMS me to discuss branching out your business.
Not partnered with Pelican any longer?
Pelican owns Wilderness Systems.
@@josemirles4595 ah! I see, did not know that. Thanks!
What a huuuuge boat, maybe you could use it to continue the great loop 😉😀
Switching companies again is not bad thing aka trying out new options isn’t a bad thing. 👍🏻
Well Pelican owns Wilderness Systems, Perception Kayaks and Dagger Kayaks now. So Marty is just using other kayaks under the Pelican umbrella.
Im going to get one but ive got a car, im in trouble.
Is this a new Sponsorship ?
It kinda looks like you're selling Kayaks now, doesn't it ?
Your new "domicile " looks professionally designed and color coordinated, very nice .
Beautiful Camera work & no transgender Beer placement. hmm
Verrrrrry Nice
pelican international, owns confluence outdoor of which owns perception, wilderness systems and i think Dagger and mad river canoes if i am not mistaken, all great brands
I will never understand why you people are s9 mad at bud light. Real sheeplike behavior
This video, like many others show why hobie is the best
If you have 5k for a kayak
Best for one person is not always the best for another...
If it is the best, why such a short warranty? Pay $5000.00 for a Hobie and get the same warranty as a $500.00 Pelican!
Does this mean your no longer working for Pelican?
Pelican owns wilderness.
Wilderness Kayak? Are we seeing the end of your Relationship with Pelican, Marty?
Pelican owns confluence, which is the parent company of Wilderness.
Hobbie Copy?!
They cost less and have a better warranty than Hobie.
Pretty ridiculous to not have any rod holders on it.
Is pelican gunna be mad at your for this
Please tell me you drink a different beer now
Can't imagine how insecure you must be if a commercial made you upset enough to comment that. What a complete loser.
Why?
