I do think that even at the end of COTE we probably still won’t see his full capabilities, because he really hasn’t met a very dangerous person for him to go 100% No even 70% (Maybe will change if he changes Classes and faces against Horikita’s clsss but they still won’t beat him because they don’t know how much of a monster he really is which makes so great about him.
I haven't read the LN, but if things are going they way the anime portrayed, then it seems like Koji is stealth-training Horikita to become strong enough to defeat him in the future. In other words, my man is so OP, he has to create a weapon capable of destroying him himself.

I did read some theories that give me hope for him, but as each new light novel volume comes out... i am honestly losing hope that Ayanokoji will be... I guess happy in life? Honestly speaking when I watched this for the first time, I wasn't prepared for how the MC was gonna be like and that why I has to rewatch the season like 3 times. Both becoz it was good and to understand how he was😅😅
The strongest emotions in Ayanokouji are fear and hate Fear for what he has been through in the White Room, in vol7 he said it himself during his fight against Ryuen and he wanted to keep himself safe since no one would ever save him that is the fact he learnt, he is alone against the world and has no allies Hate against his father and his own self-hate, he hated and disliked the man from the moment he meet him and hates himself since they are so alike, in vol7 the moment he realised that his father is in the same room in him he shows quite a bit anger towards him in his own thoughts while keeping a calm front In vol2 he states that he is a horrible human being due his own mentality that he can't get rid of no matter how hard he tries, his ultimate goal is to prove his own father that his ideal(which Kiyotaka embodies) is wrong, it's why he wants his own defeat more that anything else
Though i'm afraid it won't be perfect once Ayanakouji switches classes cus there is a high chance that Ayanakouji will lose against Horikita's class once he changes class. And that would be the moment of all time.
He is such a walking mystery. Truly fascinating that he is such a perfect logical/rational being in a world full of people that represent various ideals.

Even though he establishes bonds with some people, at the end of the day he still goes back to his core nature where he uses people as mere tools. It's as you said, Ayanokoji is a selfish character. He is using all of his bonds in ANHS in a way that it will help him prove his father wrong.

I think even your description is faulted. He can be explained very simply. When he was an infant, in a test, he felt frustrated that he got the answer wrong, and after that, he continuously takes in data and grows himself to feed his ever growing hunger for knowledge. He stayed at the white room for all those years for the same reason, he left white room for the same reason. Everything he does is just for that, more information. Even back in his childhood, he wanted to keep failures in the White room there for a bit longer because he wanted to know something only the failures could know. Ayanokoji Kiyotaka will not stop until he has known everything there is to know.
