I cannot get over how Stockfish made a rook instead of a queen. It had no reason to do that other than to clown Mittens. This is a robot made to play _perfect chess_ and it _intentionally thought_ “I can do this winning sequence with a queen, but I think it’d be funnier to do it with rook.”
I think if it calculates a forced mate with a minor piece it just does that and doesn't bother calculating a queen.
@@midn8588 Yeah, that's correct. The modern engines want to use the least force to get the best results, so if they calculate that with a rook is fine, then they take a rook. As well, all we know the queen is so powerful that, in some positions, there are possible stalemates.
The best part is, if Stockfish made a queen it would’ve been M4
But instead it made a rook and made it M6
It deliberately chose the longer sequence to clown Mittens in the best way possible

Engines try to minimize the loss of material (usually measured as centipawns) so stockfish promotes a piece that guarantees victory with the smallest loss of material.

Levy's narration is absolutely lovely. Not only he's passionate about chess, he make you REALLY care about what he's presenting to you. You just can not not love it.
His commentary not only made me understand the stakes of each move, It made me emotionally invested enough to feel an uncomfortable amount of anxiety. Never thought chess could get such an emotion outta me.

Yah, that was an absolute power move. There is never any reason to choose a rook over a queen besides to assert dominance.
I love the analogy of Stockfish being the older brother because in typical older brother fashion, on any given day, the little brother hates him. Big brother just seems to delight in tormenting little brother when it’s just the two of them. Every time they compete against each other, it’s just utter torture. Every time they’re supposed to be working together, nothing little brother does or wants to do gets any approval. But then, one day, little brother shows up with bruises and points out a bully on the playground… and big brother flips.
It’s that moment where you’ve spent your entire life under someone’s heel and all of a sudden, the boot lifts up and you see it float over to stomp someone else. On some level, you pity the poor soon-to-be victim and you still resent the boot for doing what it does. But, it’s still big brother, and nobody messes with you while he’s around… except him… as soon as the stupid cat gets squashed.

@@DoubleGstudio But that's the thing they're saying in their comment. Stockfish calculated that it didn't even need its' queen, as powerful as the piece is, to beat Mittens. Then it used a longer and more humiliating path to victory, giving Mittens a queen via promotion almost as an insult (I don't need mine, and you can't win even with yours), which also forced Mittens to move its' king into a mate position as its' only legal, desperate, and futile move. It's not that Stockfish "missed" a quicker victory, it's that it was coded in a way which allowed for it to not only calculate its' victory, but calculate the exact amount of force it needed to obtain said victory, without going overkill with a queen. Keep in mind that it achieved this absolute domination of a win against a bot that even our current Grandmasters struggle to beat. Whoever coded Stockfish should be very proud of themselves, they've coded a masterpiece.

Is Stockfish really sadistic? Judging from Levy's matches against Mittens, that engine is far worse _edit:_ in that regard.
Stockfish isn’t sadistic. Stockfish systematically dismantles you limb-by-limb, but it does it so as to efficiently execute you as quickly and easily as possible. Stockfish has no interest in your pain, or in your surrender, or in having a moral victory. It just wants you to stop breathing as quickly as possible.
Mittens is nothing like that. Mittens will take your soul. Mittens will suffocate you slowly, not to win, but just to enjoy watching you thrashing. Mittens will traumatize you until you forget your mother’s voice.
Mittens’ weakness, of course, is that Stockfish does not have a soul. It doesn’t need to breathe, and even if it did, it wouldn’t panic when it was choking. It has no mother, and if it did, it would sacrifice her to win a pawn. Mittens is a menace, but a menace can’t beat a killer.
The fact that stockfish made mittens checkmate itself shows how huge his sense of humor is!

@@danielsurvivor1372 Due to the way stockfish works, it has to also consider the moves its opponent will play. Maybe it calculated the best outcome for itself would be when Mittens doesn't take the promoted piece. However, if the piece was a queen Mittens would absolutely take it.

Chess engines actually don't always play the best moves, whose is probably why storing lost advantage. But it sure is scary, 0.7 to 0 I have never seen that from stockfish

it probably didn't. The eval bar is from the browser stockfish which is a less stronger version than the cloud one. In a lot of occasions it doesn'realise the position as it needs a lot of time to evaluate it more correctly. So probably the stockfish that playe Mittens never lost the advantage
I doubt that happened. The engine analyising the game is worse than stockfish 15.
