Even when it got toxic nobody really took things so literal; people get SO angry at others in stuff now! While it was a different time I’m so glad you are enjoying these works of art!! 👍

Dude, I was born in 1998 and Super Mario Galaxy came out the same year Halo 3 did.
I don't play FPS games. I have only ever bought 2 games that were rated M.
I remember Halo. I remember people that played Halo, that loved Halo. Cousins, schoolmates, the general public at large. I'm not just going to deny the influence that Halo has on the gamescape at that time.

For those who never played and wonder why we cared so much, Bungie made an entire generation get into Halo, everything from the soundtrack to the feel of the matches online was legendary, and for many it was a perfect first step into the competitive scene, the midnight launches where everyone met up at a store (which current generations will most likely see less and less) and the splitscreen features for those who wanted to couch co-op - it was all there and it took all of us to new heights of what a game could be.
I will always remember Halo: 1 2 and 3 as the crowning achievement of the mid 2000's shooter gaming era.

Absolutely. That Wii/360/PS3 era was just perfect. Want just simple, fun games with friends? Play a Wii game. Want to go online and do ridiculously random shit in an FPS? Go play Halo. Wanna play something more experimental or story-focused? Go play PS3. Plus, the Wii and PS3 didn't require a subscription to play online. Only the 360 did. Mario Kart Wii or the Killzone games? Completely free to play with anyone, anywhere, just like on PC to this day.
Plus, DLC was way less egregious. No Battle Passes or loot boxes. Just, hey, want extra maps or characters? Here, it's not that expensive and they're also fantastic additions to an already great base game. Something changed when we went to Wii U/PS4/Xbox One. Companies got way greedier and the really passionate devs are either out of the industry or just doing indie games. Indie games are great, but let's be honest, most people play AAA games.

    I cried man.
I used to play Halo 3 back when I was way younger. I didn’t play the older Halo 2, or CE, but I played the 3rd one every time I went to the library and rented it with my mom. I loved playing it every weekend. I would spend countless hours replaying missions, going through different difficulties of the game’s campaign, and messing around on forge and sometimes even fighting against my Dad in a split screen match. I loved it so much. I grew older, but I still never forgot my fear of the Flood mission in that game. The very first time I ever experienced it, I screamed and turned off my xbox after seeing the Marines and Covenant both turn against me. After I bought a new xbox and everything, I finally got up a new game pass subscription and started playing the Master Chief collection. I played CE, I played Reach, I played the 4th Halo installment, and I enjoyed it mostly. It was fun nonetheless, and gave back so many memories of Halo 3 and renting it at the library.
That’s when I saw Halo Infinite’s trailer. I was fucking ecstatic. “A new enemy? Oh shit! It’s an enemy I fought against in Halo Wars 2?! So awesome!”
As soon as I was able to download it, I played the campaign. It was.. okay at the most. I thought the gameplay wasn’t the best, but the story and boss fights and open world experience were interesting.
    Then I checked out Multiplayer.
    I hated it.
    I hated what I saw.
    Micro-transactions everywhere.
I regretted having even tried playing the new Infinite, and that’s when I just gave up on Halo overall. I saw to it as if it no longer had any worth after what 343 decided to put out there.

Halo 3 is by far the greatest multiplayer experience I’ve ever had with any game ever. It really was a time and place to be. Spartan/Elite armor was immensely customizable, giving each different player their own unique personality which made it more fun and easier to make friends. As well as the fact that the community really self nurtured itself through tools like Forge and being able to upload/download custom maps and game modes. God there will never be a game like that again.

That's a slap of truth right there. If we take Halo out of 4, 5, and Infinite and if they were released as their own first-person shooters, they would stagger and fall as generic games that may find a little success but nothing near the success of Bungie games. They don't actually know how to build an awesome game. They were simply given a successful IP without any of the foundation of where that success came from.
    They gotta go.

I was a PC player that got hooked on Source games (CS:S, TF2, Half-Life, etc). My best friend grew up on Xbox with the Halo series. Before we met each other, I never played Halo and he had never touched a Source game. Both of us *frequently* talk about how we miss 'the old days', and it almost always boils down to: Games today are too competitive-focused, triple A games frequently shit the bed, and most of all... the sense of community is lost.
I thought I was just being nostalgic with rose-tinted glasses, but seeing so many other people state the same thing, the "feeling of community" turned to "addicted to progression" and "the amount of competition", it rings true, I yearn for when I played for fun and not a sense of progression in games. If you asked me to find a multiplayer videogame today that has active servers where people play and VC happily together like at 9:39, I wouldn't be able to point you to a single modern title. Sure there was shit like 2009 COD rage in lobbies but it just felt like people VC'd more often and tried to have fun more often than they do today.
I wonder in what ways changes in AAA game development, shifts in culture online / as a whole, and the aforementioned rose-tinted glasses affect that perception on gaming in the past versus the present.

I will never forget the launch of halo 4, how all the excitement slowly dwindled as the fans realized it was not quite right. The launch of halo 5 left me and many of my friends hesitant as we did not know what to expect, and ultimately we were disappointed. So much of what they've done has shown that they hate Halo and its fans; they just wanted to milk it for all it was worth, and instead failed miserably. Fans will stand their ground for the source material, for the real thing, and reject these blasphemous, imposter atrocities, just like fans did with LOTR and the Amazon TV series. Shit, I remember the first time in my life I experienced a LAN party and it was all thanks to Halo. I was too young to experience LAN parties with games like Quake, Unreal, or DOOM but my dad showed me FPS games at a relatively young age so I got to experience those games. The first time in my whole life I went to a LAN party, it was a lock-in at this local business. This guy ran the business out of his house. He had every major game console at the time (Xbox, PS2, and Gamecubes) in _every_ room in his house, and had TVs set up in every possible nook and cranny. Did you wanna play Super Monkey Ball while taking a dump? This dude had you covered.
Every console was system linked. I went to play Halo 1 multiplayer at a lock-in this guy was hosting and it was the craziest night of my life. I'm 30. I've done so much crazy stupid crap but nothing amounts to the sheer fun that 10 year old me had at this lock-in. The whole night, we had multiple games going of full lobbies. I still remember playing CTF on Blood Gulch and getting that damn flag to the base just to hear screams of approval from all sorts of places in this guy's house. It was such a surreal experience.
At the time I had mostly played Halo on PC. This was still during the era of hosted servers. I remember when Halo 2 first came out, I ran home from getting off the bus and went straight to check out Halo 2 multiplayer. I remember I called my friend, I said "I have it." He was so fricking excited. He was like "how many servers are up?" I hopped into multiplayer, and I was like "I uhh, I don't see any." We were both very confused. I said "It just has this matchmaking thing, I don't really know what that is. I don't think I like this."
Halo 2 MP was still a load of fun. And so was Halo 3. However, I still missed that sense of community that you got from hosted servers. I remember finding servers hosted by clans and getting to know the people in them. I remember being greeted by regulars who maybe hadn't seen me hop on in a few days or a couple of weeks. I remember the sense of _being missed_ in these spaces, from people who I had never even fricking met. They only knew who I was from wherever I was sitting on the scoreboard, or from being really good at driving the Warthog while playing CTF. And these people knew when I was gone, they worried about me, they missed playing with me.
It is sad that multiplayer games have devolved into this sterilized format of "click button to find people to play with." You may very well never run into those people ever again. Even if you added them to your friends list, when was the next time the both of you would be available to play? It's amazing to me how one simple change in how multiplayer games are hosted completely eradicated all sense of belonging, purpose, and community.
These are fundamental pillars. This is why games like TF2, despite how terrible the state of the game actually is, have been able to cling to life for so long. This is why Minecraft is still one of the most popular games of all time. Sure, you may know nothing about Apache and how to set up a server. But someone you know most assuredly does. Imagine if you could only play Minecraft in multiplayer with matchmaking. Imagine a game like that dying 6 years after 2010 because nobody wanted to pay for matchmaking services anymore. Imagine how sad that would be.
Games as a service is the saddest thing I've ever seen in my entire life. You know whats nuts? My dad bought me a copy of Halo PC in 2003. It still works. I can still put this game into a computer, install it, hop into multiplayer, hit "GET LIST" and find tons of servers filled with players. This game is almost TWENTY YEARS OLD. And it still works! Imagine denying people this experience. Imagine denying consumers a FUNCTIONAL product. When you fork over $60 + tax for that new game with hyped multiplayer, you're getting a product that is GUARANTEED to no longer be functional 7, 8, or 9 years later.
When GameSpy was going away, forever, Bungie said "that's BS, here's a patch so you guys can still get a server list to find multiplayer games." When physical copies of the game started becoming less and less commonplace, Bungie said "hey guys, here's a no-CD patch." This company literally made their game FREEWARE just to provide people with the ability to experience their game. Halo PC multiplayer is like a perfectly preserved time capsule. You can expose yourself to the entire Halo PC multiplayer experience circa 2003, even today.
You know what I can't do? I can't dive back into the Halo 2 multiplayer experience. Talking to people on the awful Xbox Live VOIP? Matchmaking? Haha, good luck with that. The only way to experience that again is if you have a modded Xbox and know how to use Xlink. It is just crazy to me that publishers will actively say "Welp, this had a good run, sorry guys, this game is no longer playable :^)" and they just...get away with it? Imagine paying for a movie, and 10 years later you are simply incapable of watching it because the disc isn't actually the movie, it's a license to watch the movie and the streaming service that hosts it no longer exists. People most likely think this is crazy but this is _exactly_ how it works with games as a service. It's sad.

I think one of the biggest punches in the gut was, after 343 said they weren't doing the splitscreen, within like a few weeks fans had hacked it into the game proving it was more than possible and some weird, garbage business decision kept it from happening.

    • @FinalLuigi
      @FinalLuigi Před rokem +3

The reasoning for no split screen is always 'why sell one console and one game when you can sell four consoles and four games?'

    • @adam145
      @adam145 Před rokem

Yep, at this point people would take anything for splitscreen but apparently players "deserve better" so they will get nothing.
It's like your boss giving you a car for your job, saying:
"sorry man, I can't give you a Ferrari, so I won't get you anything"

It’s one thing to not include the feature, it’s another to announce it’s inclusion only to back out, and then have rando hackers reveal your incompetence. Only 343 could pull this off.

Thank you to everyone that had lived in the golden age of Halo with me. You all made my childhood amazing and unforgettable. And wither we were teammates or on opposite sides we shared many late nights and created incredible memories together just having fun and living in the moment. Also want to thank those that teabaged my dead spartan and trash talked me online and made toxic comments about my mom while we were in a lobby waiting for a game to start up. I Hated it back in the day but now I look back and cherish those memories the most. Long live Bungie’s Halo!!!

Reach was a warning. The fires, the screaming, the bloodshed. It was easy to think it was all just a game then, but now that has unfortunately stopped being fiction, and the mistakes made are being paraded like a good thing. If you can line up all of this like a murder case, then it’s obvious how this all died. They wanted to so badly be call of duty, that they forgot how to believe in things bigger than themselves, and doomed their future to die a stillborn. Never forget it. This warpath only leads back to reach every time. And it is hell.

Lol shut the hell up. Reach was a slight deviation, but the Bungie DNA is as strong in that game as any of the others
The downfall was sharp, noticable and started at 4

@@davidlane1248 I mean, Reach was great, and sent things out with a bang, but sure. Go ahead and yell at me. Bungie tried to tell you that everything was going to fall apart, and they used Reach's story to do it. Too bad they gave into their own hysteria and left Destiny unfinished as well. Turns out nothing was safe from death. Not even Halo.

I never forgot. We all got heated up about it for a while. The truth hurts, but at least it was final. Don’t be sad that it’s over. Be happy you were there. I know I am. Without Reach, it’s likely that I never would have gotten to making my own games.
Halo gave me the courage to rebuild. Seeing how long it’s been since and how little Xbox cares, it might as well be worth a shot. Something special was lost here. That doesn’t mean it’s gone forever. There’ll be another time.
