Most of those Bungie devs aren't working at the company anymore. 343 Industries rarely talks about development in those making-of videos, there's few explanation about anything in Halo 5 behind-the-scenes. "this space needs to be fun before it's pretty" the antidote to the modern game industry
ikr
Thats why Doom is my GOTY. Every aspect is designed around gameplay.
The first step in the right direction is Doom. The modern shooter that UNDERSTANDS that it's a video game and is therefore an incredibly fun video game, instead of a "gritty and realistic" piece of shit.
+Joel Coates please tell me when you say "gritty realistic peace of shit" you're not being serious
+The Macaroni Chronicles
No I'm 100% serious. Recently a lot of shooters, have been trying to make their games "realistic" and making them not fun in the process. Doom however prioritises fun over all else.
" People want weapon skins, we see a clear need there "
Who the actual fuck asked for weapon skins, are 343 just making shit up now, as an excuse to add more shit?
But but but... Who DOESN'T want stupid pizza AR skins?!?!? I mean, obviously Pizza AR is better than having a complete and functional game with all of the classic gametypes, right?
Gosh, how DARE the community try to tell 343i what they want from a game! Don't people know that 343i is the best company ever and they and their games are absolutely completely perfect? Clearly, Halo 5's story was amazing, and the players are just stupid for not understanding it.
Rhys Nichols mabey there listiening to call of duty fans instead of halo fans
Exactly well said they want to please all the other FPS players except halo
I'm pretty sure even casuals don't like this novelty shit. It cheepens the game so much. It reminds me of those shitty F2P games like Crossfire. I really noticed when the newest COD had dancing multicoloured robots spouting memes and dabbing. I think that's why normalfags like COD 4 so much.
If you are actually a casual...you don't have TIME for unlocking skins and other bullshit, you just want the CORE GAME!
I feel it's more Microsoft than 343 though. They want more money and they will push the game in awkward ways to get it. Even if it makes the game suck. It's part of the reason Bungie left Microsoft, they were always making compromises to the game. It's a miracle Halo 1-3 were as good as they were.
Dev's favourite words:
343: competitive
bungie: fun
I like Bungies Idea more
"He's a human, not just a suit of armor"
"He's a husk of metal that you move around"
Hey, eku1? Have you seen Paramount's "Halo"?
Don't shoot the messenger.
A husk because your actions as a player reflect on him, you are the Chief, you live in that story, feeling everything they feel.

I love how 343i always talked about how competitive their game would be, yet the competitive community hates it. Whereas Bungie always emphasized fun, but still managed to satisfy BOTH the causal and competitive communities.
wat?
Sloth from The Goonies I know this comment is a month old, but do you remember Reach? That game butchered the competitive scene.
+John Adams nope, everyone pretty much loved that game.
Slender Man 186 Truth be told, it wasn't great or the competitive scene. And was less successful than Halo 3. even in term of player retention.
+Sloth from The Goonies while true it's still the most played of the Bungie games, getting about 10k players per day.

*Bungie:* Master Chief is a piece of armor, made to represent the player, we made the fucking character, we would know.

I always thought the Spartans, being human weapons designed not to feel, stop or surrender was something Halo had that made it unique.
But then they decided to make Spartans people and the sacrifice of Noble team was pissed on in a few years.

Substance over style.
Adrian Perez... that guy still works at Bungie ya know? lol
Every AAA shooter dev nowadays needs to take note of this. Im finding a lot of maps in games that are designed by the art team.
they won't
ShadowBrony I think 343 focused on fun too much and they forgot the serious bits like the story. The multiplayer which was supposed to be fun, was competitive maps. And just like that one Bungie developer said, "if you think your game is fun, it's not." You have to really think about your game and what can go, what can stay, and what needs to be implemented to make it even better.

Unfortunately, as soon as the money making potential of the gaming industry was realized the corporate bastards decided to milk it dry instead of producing genuine content. That's why all of the magic is lost today.

Halo 5 has good multiplayer thats it. Halo 4 was garbage. At least Halo 5 did it good enough to get back onto the MLG pro circuit. The campaign was god awful tho!
eM97 Halo was never meant to be on the competitive circuit. They have a thousand fps games on the market that cater to that crowed. Halo was always about the experience of the individual and made you feel apart of a community and care about the characters and have fun. It always stressed creativity and design, but now it's all about attracting more players making more money and being pretty and relevant rather than good. They bought this Game and it's rights to make money and buy a fan base, because it was a good "investment" not because they cared about it or its history and story. All I'm saying is they took the game that alot of us grew up around and used it to make a name for themselves and make money and it hurts to see something we loved gutted and replaced. It's like watching someone tear down or bulldoze a park, maybe even an arcade you spent a lot of your life around to build a mall. Most of us have just accepted that what we loved is dead and that's that. Sure we all secretly hope it isn't or that it makes a comeback into our hearts but it's just a different thing now with the same face. We are just sad, that's all.
Ex-Bungie: "Game needs to be fun to play first."
343: "Players wanted a fun game, so we gave them pizza skins because fuck you."
nothing wrong w wacky skins but i get what u mean
@@RoachCatJr there is something wrong with wacky skins, it breaks the aesthetic of the game, how are you supposed to take something seriously when someone is dancing half naked with Chief's helmet on with Pom Poms in hands? you wouldn't be able to be invested in the sad scene if that was the fact right? it's the same with wacky weird skins, if you want to make something serious, make it serious, if you want wacky, then make it wacky, but don't try to do both. Halo's style doesnt fit wacky skins, same as older CoD's and other games with more grim stories. that's a thing devs today don't realise, if something doesn't fit the aesthetic it doesn't belong there, end of story.
look at games like Team Fortress 2, which started the whole craze around skins and lootboxes for the larger masses, it's made to be wacky from the start, hell it's just a mod of the Half-life 2 engine, with no great overarching story, simply "2 teams, go kill each other" so of course it fits a game like that, but ask yourself what does a pizza skin on Spartans armor give the spartan? is it going to make the battle this Spartan goes easier? is it a good camouflage? or is it just a distracting and weird thing that doesn't fit the whole style of the game?
@@FaceFish9 exactly. Imagine being another spartan, and you get your skull caved in by a mister chief shotgun.

It still amazes me how Halo 2, a game that was rushed and put together by people who are burnt out but keep pushing, ended up being better than a whole trilogy made by a company with a bigger budget, more people and about a decades worth of time. I swear 343 had never played Halo until they get the rights to the game
It was different with Bungie. They had passion for what they were doing and it's the reason why all of their games are held in high regard.

they're* :^(
ikr, I feel so bad for those passionate people. :(
Lol I thought they looked like hipsters who just wanted the halo game on their resume but I hear you
Yeah, Bungie made halo to be a story about a lone soldier with almost infinite luck saving humanity over and over... And they made Reach purely to help non-lore buffs to understand why it's so important when Keyes says "Cortana, all I need to know is, *did we lose them*?", at the beginning of combat evolved.
They ended Halo 3 the way they did cos what they basically did was took the Arbiter, sent him home and then had Cortana and the Master Chief drift until (presumably) they would eventually be found by humanity and the Chief would be brought home at long last.
The reason Bungie had the Chief say "Wake me... when you need me" was probably only in part cos then they could wrap up the story of the master chief and then lay the Halo franchise to rest, and pursue new adventures and possibilities. They didn't want Halo to become a money machine...
343 should have taken up the story with the Arbiter instead, detailing him leaving earth and then exiting slipspace over Sanghelios all in the one cutscene, and maybe mention something along the lines of "Home... I never thought I would see it again..." And then have it skip ahead a bit and then put the player in the shoes of the Arbiter in the middle of a conversation as maybe idk, say... Lord Hood is briefing the Arbiter on a new threat to humanity, or maybe offering aid to help the arbiter reunite the Sangheli culture once more, and return it to how it was before the Covenant. Then maybe have the player go through missions, putting down terrestrial threats to the Sangheli and then skip ahead a bit to a human commander asking the Arbiter for aid in managing a new threat to humanity (The Flood maybe? Or possibly the Prometheans returning of their own volition, with the didact having been brought out of his slumber by scientists investigating a shield world (Probably Requiem again) and accidentally freeing him, and then have the next few missions or so focused around the Arbiter and some elites maybe teaming up with UNSC forces to take down the didact and ensure that this time he won't come back again.
that's one game down... Say they want to make another, perhaps put you in the shoes of a SPARTAN IV who is sent to investigate the distress beacon of a ship thought to have faded into legend: The UNSC Spirit of Fire. you go in, boots get on the ground and then at the end of the first level, you find the crashed remains of the UNSC Forward Unto Dawn which contains the data ghost of Cortana and the still cryo frozen Chief... something happens and he gets thawed out, but the hatch won't open and the Chief can't get it open from inside. So you have to do a quicktime event to punch the glass and get him out... He asks about Cortana, and then sees that Cortana is no more, with only a data ghost of herself left in the system cos it's been so long. then he returns to earth and mourns her loss... While you and the Arbiter perhaps, or maybe other Spartans go on the offensive against the remaining forces of the Promethean army.
you still get the "No! Cortana's dead!" moment, and find out what happened to the Master Chief... but then he's taken out for the moment from the story, and eventually returns, looking much older, and lo and behold, he is an instructor, maybe providing a mentor figure for a SPARTAN VI program...
If I were to take a side in the current split in the Halo community... I would be on the Bungie side. Halo 4's story was cool... But Halo 5 was NOT a true halo game. They retconned their own previous game, just cos people got cranky about them taking Cortana out... She was in the middle of Rampancy, which was also in Bungie canon if I remember right... So yeah. We'll just have to see if 343 can turn everything around and revive the Halo franchise when they (eventually) come out with Halo 6.
Twylite Fang "Wake me when you need me." When I played Halo 4 I expected Chief to be saving the galaxy in epic fashion... but all I got was a depressing story about his "humanity", with lame music, lame armor, call of duty-esque features, and although the Didact is cool.. he pretty much killed the "mystery" of the forerunners.. as far as I'm concerned Halo 4, 5,& 6 are non-canon.

343: "Let's put in shit we think is cool!"

343: how can we make this look pretty and get boring after a few play throughs?
Retroflection yet bungie made halo reach, adding in what they thought would be cool, and ruined their entire franchise in one fell swoop. It's all well and good blaming 343 for everything, but pay some attention and you'll see that the beginning of the end was with reach. Sprint, armor abilities, weapon bloom, no real rank system, shitty bland forge made maps. NO. FUCK bungie. They ruined halo forever. And now they're making one of the worst franchises of our modern day. Destiny. Garbage company.

One of the reasons I praise old Bungie is because they were literally just a bunch of nerds with a passion for making games.
Thank you BananaFist for being one of the few smart people that sees such a obvious thing. 343s business practices all pretty much scream "We just want your money and don't care about your game"
Seeing the 343 devs all self-congratulatory over seeing their bloody lootbox system is all that needs to be shown or said about how much they don't care about actually playing or enjoying games seriously
Bungie back then had talent and didn't seem to want to rape our wallets nearly as badly as 343 does. We would gladly give halo tons of money today if it was still... You know... GOOD?!?!?!?!!!! I have bought multiple copies of all the bungie halo titles. Can't say the same for 343s halo games. Haven't gotten any newer halo games since halo 4 lol. That one left a bad taste in my mouth.
The problem is that the games are pretty "meh" under 343. Maybe not big riggs or super man 64 bad but still.... They are pretty bad especially when it comes to price. Gaming was cheaper once upon a time and wages used to be better so to see micro transaction trash like halo 5 flood the market is really just faggot shit lol.
Don't forget guys... This is the company that sold us a 60 dollar drink coaster known as MCC. And then while failing to fix it to this very day... 343 came out to tell us that Halo 5 wouldn't suck like MCC lol. That's sad when you have to come out and tell us that your next game wont suck like your last game hahahaha.
Here's the real funny part... Halo 5 did suck and still sucks even after updates. Shit story, codlike gameplay, weak/lack of content... especially at launch, micro transactions, and broken modes/glitches within forge, theater, and fire fight.
The game really had a "we will fix it later with updates and patches" approach and they never really did fulfill that mind set with halo 5. The "free dlc" sounded nice but in reality it wasn't nice at all... The free DLC is just stuff that the game should have launched with.
Clearly the game wasn't ready. They shouldn't launch a unfinished game. Makes for a bad first impression and shows that they are greedy. Also... Games that get updated can get better yeah sure... But that hardly ever happens and 343 sure as shit never seems to be able to pull it off.
If they some how pull off a miracle and make halo 6 as good as a bungie halo game that doesn't have a super cod cloned feel to the game play, comes as a finished game, and doesn't have wallet raping... Then I will kiss 343s ass but lets get real here guys... THAT WONT HAPPEN LOL! RIP HALO! 2001- to whenever the fuck 343 started fucking shit up big time... Which is pretty much right when halo 4 launched and we got to see how crappy they truly are.

Gimme a break. There are plenty of triple A titles with fantatsic developer support and a slew of indie games as well. Just because Cod and Shattlefield are getting progressively greedier doesn't mean the whole industry is.
I feel like Bungie was a close knit group of people who weren’t afraid to tell each other when something sucks, versus 343, who are probably too scared to contradict each other, and instead just nod and clap their hands to whatever idea their higher-ups come up with cause telling someone the work they did isn’t good is just “too toxic of a work environment”

Halo 3 STILL holds up. It still plays great, it still looks great and the score is still top notch. A legendary game, especially for those of us who were there on our 360's shouting at each other. It was my, and many other's first ever experience of proper online gaming. Completing the campaign on legendary splitscreen with my friend is a lasting memory for me. 343 just doesn't get it.
Pretty much, Halo 3 was probably one of the best and most feature complete games I have ever played. I can't think of many other games where putting "Complete multiplayer experience" on the multiplayer disk wouldn't sound like hubris but halo 3's multiplayer definitely earned that. Sadly 343 fucked it up with MCC by having us play it through their sloppy slow disorganised menu system and shit matchmaking system. It's just not the authentic complete Halo 3 experience that it should have been purely because of 343's incompetence.

I dont have a problem with sprint on reach tbh... But i understand people who hate it... When i play halo 2 i dont feel like i need to sprint
They could’ve just increased movement speed by 1 and avoided the whole problem. Armor abilities made sense in Reach since those Spartans were weaker in canon, but including it in a game where you play as a Spartan with the latest armor, it doesn’t make any fucking sense. The climb mechanic was a shit decision as well.
@@beefs0ck911 I want you to explain how them making it easier to traverse your environment in satisfying and meaningful ways is a bad mechanic? there's an unbelievable amount of times in Halo 3 where I just wished that I could grab and scramble up a ledge or it felt like Chief should be able to sprint. Like after chief kills guilty spark and has to leave quickly, running across that bridge, chief SPRINTS in the cutscene. the only thing I could think was, "a super soldier, with cybernetic super armor, just now learned how to sprint after 3 games?" I mean it's strange that it took so long to add climb and sprint when they both felt like they belonged since the beginning. Built in boosters, better movement and sprinting is the best changes to Halo ever. 343 did plenty of horrible things to Halo but fixing the overly heavy and slow chief from 3 is not one of them.
@@2lycos yes the argument of "HES A SUPER SOLDIER HE CAN SPRINT!!"
lmao, so we need to have realism? Where is the realism in a thruster system that can lift an insane super soldier plus a suit of armor that weighs half a ton? The game doesn't have a fuel gauge and it seems like you have infinite thrust, is that scientifically explained in the game? Not really.
Not to mention the fact that guess what, if clamber was added in halo 3 all the ledges you weren't able to get on now would just be raised so you couldn't even clamber to get on. Map design buddy.

"Master Chief is a human, not a robot"
He is BARELY human.
The sheer amount of biological and technological augmentations that went in to making him have significantly altered his emotional and logical reasoning. In the books it was pretty much spelled out that he was programed mentally by his military training and then the slew of hormones and tech they put in him set that training in stone. His frickin nervous system is connected to his suit and an AI.
He has slightly more empathy than Robocop.
No Nicki, he is not "just a human".
He's essentially a t 800 with some humanity in him
Makes sense in halo 1 - 3 the game basically makes you feel like a walking weapon of war
Not only that but Chief also had good friends, a dry sense of humor and was sarcastic sometimes, got mad, etc. Even though he had all of that augmentation done to him, he was still human. He was sutble when showing his emotions (he's military, for Odin's sake, I expect him to have a handle on his emotional state). Honestly, he kinda reminded me of sone of my family and family friends that served in the military. Calm, reserved, etc.
He's a boring character
It would be acceptable to start showing his human side from Halo 4 onwards; new trilogy and all. Shame they took away the catalyst for it (Cortana's death) and threw everything under the rug.

The whole problem with 343's attempts at "injecting character" into Chief is that he was never a "character" in the first place. What can you honestly say is a defining character trait in Chief? He's brave? Like Joe Staten said, he's a green suit of armor you inhabit that allows you to shoot aliens, and we loved him for it. All of his spoken dialogue is written in the perspective of the player's immediate knowledge, and current thoughts of what's happening in the world, with some occasional early 2000s "I just want to shoot shit" quippy attitude. He's a reflection of the player through and through. Without the unique connection each player develops while playing the trilogy, Chief is nothing more than a husk. So when 343 sets out to "find Chief's humanity", that means having to establish a baseline of Chief's canon personality and basically shitting on the connection people made with him in the original trilogy, with the problem being exacerbated with them choosing to heavily base all of their games on a hyper-exagerated Chief and Cortana relationship. Chief and Cortana were nothing more than battlemates, with some playfulness thrown in here and there. If Halo 4 was your first game, you'd think they were fuckin' in love.

Halo Reach is the worst Halo game to date, no doubt about it. More content? My ass LOL. It's story was over-all the worst as well, bottom of the barrel over-all.
Halo 4 had way more content to play and see then Reach did at all. Hell, Halo 4's forge alone was a slight improvement of Reach's, and it's custom game options were widely the same (besides some problems with the Infection game type that is)
The only problem with Halo 4 was that it had to many similarities to Reach, causing it to over-all die. It's gameplay though was essentially Halo 2's when you get rid of all the loadouts, AA's and such.
Halo 4 also had a wayy better story then any of the Halo games to date.
Halo 5 improved upon Halo 4 in terms of the content, it just took 343 much longer to release all of the content over a year due to the fact that they essentially had to recreate the story from scratch a year upon release due to Microsoft's own doings, which essentially you got the story you have today. Nothing to do with 343 at all.

The original Halo trilogy is what got me into gaming, and also specifically into multiplayer. I fucking miss those days :(
Harambo miss when my brother and friends played it... simpler days. So much fun and time
