In his speech on July 1, during the Motion of Thanks to the President’s address in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi called the Agnipath scheme for recruitment in the armed forces a “use and throw” scheme that differentiates heavily between a permanent soldier and those temporarily recruited as Agniveers.
Defence minister Rajnath Singh intervened to say that Gandhi’s allegations were false and that the government provides Rs 1 crore compensation to families of Agniveer soldiers who die in the line of duty.
On July 3, Gandhi posted a video on X in which he said that the defence minister had lied to parliament about this compensation. The video then showed a clip of Ajay Kumar’s father telling Gandhi earlier that while the Punjab government has given the family some money, the “Central government gave them nothing.” The video also shows Kumar’s father reacting to Rajnath Singh’s compensation claim in the Lok Sabha. He says, “We received neither any message, nor any money.”
Hours later, the Indian Army’s spokesperson posted on X, saying that they wished to clarify that “Of the total amount due, family of Agniveer Ajay has already been paid Rs 98.39 lakhs.”

The matter is straightforward now. There are two insurance payments; one is from SBI connected his bank account. Another insurance is the soldier’s membership in an army organisation. Where is the one bullet payment of 1 crore from the central government or Army compensation fund promised in the Parliament?

It comes to the stage that the government doesn’t need to pay any compensation as the fallen soldier had personal insurance with third party coverage.
Family received 1 crore, they no need to pay any premium, Gov has done insurance for them

Gen Mor is a true soldier and spoke from his heart to demonstrate he has been a commander who understood his Troops extremely well.

Completely agree with Gen Shukla. All these old and retired ex-servicemen are all like, "I have been..." or "I have seen..." or "I know how..." and so on and so forth. Spare a thought for all those Colonels and Generals and Majors who are in service right now. They might be thinking, "don't we know anything"?
Kind of funny coming from ex-servicemen that while the guns and tanks need modernization, the people behind those guns and tanks should be from legacy systems. I guess they forget that not only our forces, but everything around us is being modernized. And people are coping with it, because those clinging to legacy systems and procedures are falling behind.
Technology change is one thing, technology adoption is another, and to have a robust institute, the rates of those two got to be at par. There's no question of falling behind, for the costs are too high, nation at stake.
Lastly, if it takes 8 long years to train a gunner, well, the training needs to change, as simple as that. It can't be a scenario where we need to stick to old guns because it takes 8 years to train on a new gun.

A beautiful interview conducted Madam Barkha, with the high officers of the Armed forces on a hot topic, 'Agniveer.' The different points of views was given with knowledge, experience, personal views that enlightened us viewers and the outcome of agree to disagree, with courtesy and grace as Gentlemen. The code and ethics of our Armed Forces. May they all, in present services or in retirement be Blessed by the Almighty above.
In my humble ignorant view, the Agniveer scheme should either be excessively tweaked by first having a trial project which ever service of the Armed services, and if unsuccessful, completely scrapped. You don't send a greenhorn to do a professional combat soldiers job. As in this case, cause of death was in action. I don't think a Martyer of the country cannot be differentiated by the status he holds in the Army and dues given to the dependents, should be appropriate. The government in power would definitely look into the same.

I am a retired army ,the army have trainning period of 9 months at the list n are send to their units after which it takes atleast 3 to 5 years to be a perfect soldier that too after attending a trainning called young soldier training in the unit for another one month only then a soldier is really ready for battlefield
You cannot simply compare everyone.... different people have different adopting capabilities, again as an army retired knowing the ground condition i say 6 months trained soldier can never be ready as a soldier,I am not against the scheme but please prolong the training period n their tenure.
I'm not from army background, but I can assure you, if that's the training and tech adoption rate of our armed forces then it's really scary and in a decade or two our entire armed forces might be redundant, practically of no use.
The world moves at it's own pace. You can't ask it to slow down so that you can keep up with it, you have to speed up, else fall behind. That's how it works in every vertical, be it software, communications, infra, roads, railways, medicine and what not.
Not sure why some of our ex-servicemen think that the same principle doesn't apply to our armed forces, and having served in the forces, only they know it better than those serving now.

Agnipath is a royal path to FOLLY. Two reasons were adduced during the press conference in June 2022. First making the army younger and second making young men more disciplined. Both are not tenable as I can prove that by using 10th class arithmetic.
Another reason adduced is that the armed forces require modern weapons and equipment using technology. When we consider the impact of high technology it is essential to keep in mind the human factor: the effectiveness of weapon systems and equipment will continue to depend on the men who man and maintain these so-called high-tech systems. Agniveers will not be suitable for their lack of training and experience. Yes pension is an issue which can be resolved by different terms and conditions for civil like trades in the armed forces.These trades are cooks, barbers, waiters, drivers, clerks and storekeepers and so on.
There is a need to carry out a comprehensive study to analyse the whole gamut of HR management of personnel below officers" ranks
including recruitment, training, postings, career progression and exit policies.
I am not even mentioning the socio-economic aspects which are equally important

The last 10 years have seen this government trying to tinker with every constitutional, prestigious and important institution whether it is the judiciary, parliament, RBI, ECI and even the apolitical armed forces. Institutional autonomy, independence and impartiality was one of the reasons that weighed on people's minds when they voted for a coalition government this time. It was the same thinking and thought that had infiltrated Indira Gandhi's dispensation and citizens vehemently opposed this even at the height of her power. We as Indians have learned that cult personalities bring more harm than good to the society, economy,polity and have damaging ramifications for democracy where dissent is muzzled, free speech is a crime and disagreement is no longer acceptable. Policy shocks like demonetization, GST and agnipath schemes are given without due thought, process, deliberation, discussion and without any pilot testing. The ecosystem which includes some sections of the media, super-rich industrialists, intellectuals and active backers of the party, ideology, idea in the public sphere gets the benefits, patronage and encouragement. The majority of the ordinary citizens suffer with grim realities of life with even their fundamental rights being snatched away.
It's good that RAGA's intervention has given rise to a debate on this flawed scheme. It's true that Raga hadn't done his homework properly. Or he was ill-informed. However it was a blessing in disguise. If he had merely pointed out the drawbacks of the scheme, the government wouldn't have responded. It's his faux pas that drew an immediate response from the HM. Many army officers are opposed to it. It is tantamount to compromising on the security of the country
It is not about cutting corners in Defence Budgets, Barkhajee, it's about doing away with HUGE CONTIGENT LIABILITIES in the future, without real COST-BENEFiT

This discussion highlights one of the problems faced by a Nationalist Government - entrenched bureaucracy not interested in change, either good or bad. As revealed in the discussion, when the government asks them to bring their own ideas of efficiency both in skill and return on the buck, they have nothing to offer. When government goes ahead with their own plan, they have all the time and ideas to critique. As to the hurry in implementing Agniveer/Agnipath, for the bureaucracy there is nothing time-bound. We have been watching how much time the Navy, AF are taking in evaluating new Platforms and coming up with divided recommendations. Please don't entertainment these retired, and tired generals - their time has passed.

There is a bit of clarification, Rahul had met the father of the victim who said no such compensation was recieved but now the Army says on Wednesday clarified that the family of Agniveer Ajay Kumar, would receive a compensation of approximately ₹1.65 crore.

Money should be spent on military equipment and not on pensions alone . Technology is the buzzword now
The importance of defence professionals can't be emphasized enough in a country that shares long borders with historical adversaries. However, we will have to go toward a leaner army going forward. If you scrap agniveer, they will start recruiting fewer people. I believe they recruit people based on requirement and I don't think there's any law that the army has to recruit whether or not it needs more manpower. I guess eventually it comes down to the unemployment issue.

I think such schemes are there in many countries. Even America, korea, and many other countries has it, Even their soldiers after getting couple of months training they goes to Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan etc for war. If they dies they dies, but if they lives their Govt gives them whatever they deserve after that they do other things or continue with their education. Barkhajee, the real issue is really not about cohesion and camaraderie. These hardly matter in highly professionalized environments as in the armed forces.
What do you expect in a population of 1.4 billion and growing? Barkha Jee, you cannot have your cake and eat it too? In the United States,you have PRIVATES who carry no regimental flag and yet work in total cohesion with the regulars
.PROFESSIONALISM should be present in the business of killing other humans in the name of National Security and Defence of the Nation, too, Barkhajee Besides, Agnipath combatants can CALL IT A DAY after serving 4 years and get a handsome lump sum of around 14 lakhs. You do not have till your 60th birthday like regulars, and end up with PTSD, paranoia, dementia and other mental, and physical conditions like the regulars.

Besides, the armed forces do not run on jingoism alone... economics too is involved.... Permanent soldiers carry heavy economic burdens after after, God forbid, they become martyrs in the line of duty, and, besides, the Government has to bear colossal costs of post-retirement pension benefits to their families, too, which, in real terms, could be greater than GDP of a small country. I think, negativity aside, AGNIVEER is win-win situation for both goverment as well as short-commissioned combatants.

According to data and facts in 2012 we had a shortage of army officers there are so many delays in army jobs and in Congress era hazibula terrorists posted pictures of themselves inside from India in the Congress era The Indian army had only 10 -15 day war material . Congress is so corrupt those days they delayed so many army projects and deals because there is no money they had to spend on the army .once the Rahul Gandhi said in Congress government that they are providing worse food to army because of lack of money and when you are talking about agniveer you have to think about it now we have excess of military personnel and now we have material by which we can easily survive more than 100 days in full war like situation. Back then congress was totally corrupt . The one conspiracy is in 2013 the Indian army is totally exhausted by Congress and they tried to taktapalat . Congress's softness towards china was pinning that time to the Indian army . All organisations have to be nimble to take on future challenges. I like how fire has been lit under DRDO and other Govt/Public sector companies. Similar techniques are needed to scale to the next level.We cannot rely on old methods to take on new challenges.
