The Karnataka Cabinet has approved legislation that will enable quotas for locals in the private sector in different roles and capacities, triggering a huge row in a city known as the Silicon Valley of India.
The move may also be illegal and unconstitutional. Previous attempts at such quotas in other states have been stopped by the Supreme Court. Late Wednesday evening, the government announced a halt to the proposed legislaton for the time being

This is a great decision by Karnataka government. Now the companies will move out of Bangalore. And people like us who had to come to Bangalore because all jobs are here can move to better cities having good roads, police and lower cost of living
Locate ur enterprise near to resources. Why get migrants from 1000s of km here? Let these companies move out for good. We dont need them, They want free land, infra etc from our public funds but dont want give jobs?

They should not contribute in Bengaluru economy like paying insane school fees, house rents etc. Make Karnataka a place only for Kannadigas. If you open an office in Bengaluru, you must hire only Kannadigas tapping only Kannadiga talent not India talent. I’m sure all companies would want only Kannadigas anyways that’s why they have office in Bengaluru. Also no house should be sold to non Kannadigas. All the money spent on under construction properties must be given only to Kannadigas as they have so much money anyway.

I, am a citizen of Bangalore who has become it's inhabitant it for a long time. More than any other city of India. I constantly face situations in which the kannada speaking 'locals' always ask me - where I come from. I am a Gujarati who grew up in cosmopolitan Calcutta and who never saw Gujarat till I was in high school. Moved to Bangalore more than 45 years ago as my family shifted business here. The reality of India today is about this khichdi culture, migratory and work patterns and the fun of its flavors. Some of us grasp the language, some take a long time, some never get it. What is important is how we connect with these inevitable changes...and LOOK AFTER our varied city spaces including the disappearing green belts. While Bangalore is growing tall and spreading wide, the everyday streets, foot paths, dug up roads, pot holes...not to forget the garbage strewn across, neglected...constant violation of traffic regulations, noise pollution are getting disastrous. Rare persons seem to care and speak about these issues. We strangely seem to accept these as a norm; part of development! I think what truly makes me belong to a city is the way I take care, raise concerns, speak up. It is certainly not merely about speaking a language fluently. Having said that, I also am someone who appreciates the local food, varied dialects indigenous cultures. But let us not make it hard for those who have become its residents for some generations now. Bangalore seems to have opened its flood gates to students long ago. For students for admissions in engineering and medical colleges. For IT sector opportunities galore. And now it's too late to feel so threatened. Maybe we need to build greater communication, public awareness and empathy in such matters?

Absolute rubbish move by the state government. We need development in Karnataka and at the moment other than Bangalore there are no cities. As far as I'm concerned people from other places of Karnataka move to Bangalore for employment. We must continue like this and generate revenue for the state and develop the economy. We'll face Major issues if we don't, since there are no other cities. Bangalore at the moment is great. Don't bring in some crap laws because of fascism

Everyone is smart or not so smart, because most businesses were given to Gujurati and Rajasthani I'm Blr, now they're not giving us opportunity in their states. Did I sell land to them? Was I able to invest in Blr? The people who could, did not. Now don't complain. Plus other than Bangalore we have no cities in Karnataka, remember that.

Felt bad how Mithilesh was being attacked that if he is learning Kannada or he thinks that language is reserved for his house maid and drivers. Very offensive! He is the one who made the most sense that fox the infrastructure and move away from the gimmicks.
It was strange to see Sanjay Hegde doing a live prosecution of one of the panelists, Mithilesh, and asking him if he reserved Kannada for his house maids! Was he a lawyer of the Supreme Court for real? He is working against the idea of India. These people fuel the language divide!
The socio-economic angle to this whole language debate just did not come up at all.... Language Chauvinism, people who back it, the crowd that is impressed with promises of reservation for locals all has a link to socio-economic status of a person. I don't think such reservation promises have so much support among educated aspirational middle class Kannadigas while they still love their language

When Andhra invited Kia to set up it's factory in the state , the govt also started a skill development program and offered trained staff to Kia.Karnataka should follow that.Reservations for the locals will not stand in the courts.
Karnataka has already done this with the IT companies. Till other states don't do the same, there will always be a shortage of jobs in Karnataka. The population of UP is 25 crore and the population of Karnataka is 7 crore. Why can't Lukhnow or Kanpur become like Karnataka? Why is that not the subject of debates. Why are locals not asking for that from their government instead of bulldozing houses and destroying poor people's small businesses. I live in Gurgaon and most companies here have majority people from UP and even management is quietly propagating casteist culture here. Why are there no protests in UP for education and jobs, why only commun al fights?
Even though we are Kannadigas my kid who was born in karnataka here but grew up USA will not get a job here. She understands but can't speak at all. She speaks like she is north indian. But she is kannadiga... this bill is disastrous in meny levels...

With my experience, I can say that not only UP , Bihar , RJ people speak in hindi but people from Odisha , bengal , north east and Maharashtra also speak in Hindi in non Hindi state so don't blame north India. It's like Blaming England people if someone is talking in English in UAE. Being a north part of India, I can say we are already facing humiliation from every corner of the country and we don't have courage to argue with local people whether it's Mumbai or Chennai or even Banglore
Except that people from odisha bengal NE and maharashtra who speak hindi speak 3 languages ... while biharis UP rajasthan etc. don't learn odia bangla assamese or marathi ... so the anti hindi resentment in growing in these states as well ... why should we learn the outsider's language in our own state ... @@Bhruguraj my point is, it's not necessarily people only from North India speak in Hindi in Bangalore but other also use hindi so do not blame only north Indian. Just for info our original language was Sanskrit It was only in the 14th century that Hindi developed and became a widespread language in the next 2 century so it's not true that we don't learn or adopt new things and culture

Kannadigas should now protest against centre for providing indirect reservations to hindi speaking people in Banks insurance, central government and Railways. We don't want Railways station master from north in karnataka railway stations

The real reason behind the rising negative sentiments against immigrants is actually against their lack of demands from their local governments. Not even once in this debate did anyone ask the question "What is the BJP government doing in UP to attract companies there?". UP had a population of 25 crore. What has anyone there done to create jobs locally for 25 crore people there. How many people from Karnataka, Haryana and Maharashtra work in UP. What is Ajay Bisht doing there to make sure those who were born there and speak the local language find employment in their home state. I am from North India and i have seen how North Indians move to Bangalore for jobs and then make fun of the locals there. What has BJP done for such a huge percentage of Indians in their 2 terms in power?

It has always been difficult to get work done in the office by locals because they often show more bullying behavior and do less work. This is the same problem with Marathi people in Maharashtra.
Even in Haryana this was suggested. It will keep happening till the populous states develop. UP has a population of 25 crores, but all that they do within the state is commun al politics instead of any form of real development. They have IIT and IIM but no attempt to attract any corporates. Instead of debating this, the actual debate should be why it has come to this ...what is the cause? The cause is that one undeveloped state could not provide any real development to their residents

Do you apply same test to kannidags themselves. How much percentage of kannadigas know kannada? How many children study in english medium? Why this obsession with language which is nothing but a tool to communicate.
I have not seen people from Bangalore either learn Marathi while being in Mumbai or Gujarati while being in Gujarat. I have not seen them speak French while being in Paris and then shout racism if they were expected to speak French. Too myopic and that’s precisely the reason some sections of the society never grow. I have lived in Delhi, Gujarat, Mumbai, Indore, Jaipur but no where was I expected to learn the local language. Get some life, this is India and India is one.

yes - all tech orgs should train our youngsters in other districts of karnataka, setup offices there to generate more wealth locally - schools, colleges, hospitals, etc - will have to be started by the state govt in all districts planning for the demographics of the next 2 gens starting with the students in 10-12, now. evaluate every year and plan iteratively.
likewise all states should plan for the young - this crazy resource draining migration wont happen
