  • "Why do we sleep?" has been a notoriously difficult question for scientists to answer, but, "What happens if we don't?" is actually pretty simple - nothing good. Not getting enough sleep can make you hallucinate, mess with your thinking and memory, and even lead to organ failure. And it doesn't take very long at all for these negative effects to start occurring. Here's what would happen to your brain and body, day by day, if you stopped sleeping.

I've gone without sleep before and it wasn't that bad. Around the 20 hour mark when it had been dark out for like 6 hours I felt very sleepy, but once the sun came up and I walked around a bit I felt perfectly normal, and at 30 hours I was much more coordinated than when I'm at 0.1 bac. I did have a nice 10 hour sleep that night when usually I have trouble sleeping 8 hours.

He caught up on sleep and said he felt fine, but his personality was permanently damaged. Everyone around him said it was like he was a different person, and his life went to shit because of his new behaviour.

It happened me twice when I was younger, more or less at 17yo, the most I stayed awake was ~56 hours I remember I skipped 2 nights but I "rested" in the bed unable to fall asleep for few hours in both of the night.
It was VERY strange, because all started the 1st evening when I was experiencing a weird unmotivated euphoria and the upcoming night I just decided to skip going to bed because I felt great, I tought I would sleep on the afternoon, but nope, I wasn't tired and the next night I was instead unable to sleep but unable to concentrate too and a little anxious, also the sun was really annoying me and I felt like I had no weight, but... all the they I wasn't tired BUT at certain point of the afternoon on the 3rd day I started to see the wolrd flashing black, like if I was skipping frames and I was very worried, as I went to the bed I fell asleep.
The 2nd time it happened it was just like 48hours and to be honest, since I had no fatigue or issue, I honestly hope it will happen to me again atleast once XD
It's very a strange feeling because I'm not tired or sleepy at all.

I know what happens when I personally don’t get enough sleep. I had not slept for 2 days because I was working on my projects that I needed to get done for my finals. There was a lot of slurred speech, my brain was slowing down, I gained a bit more weight, and I felt anxious. Maybe that last one is from my finals but it’s not good. Never doing that again

Omg I was awake for 41 hours straight a week ago for the 1st time. I did experience these symptoms. Especially auditory hallucinations. I kept on hearing the amoung us imposter music. The 'da da da ' sound. Micro naps happened. And i was losing grip on reality, like I was talking to a friend and thoughts like what if this was fake/me imagining it. I literally felt as if I was under the influence of something. And the paranoia my god. I finally slept after 2 days at 4am in the night only because I was scared that as I was experiencing micro hallucinatons, I would see a ghost or something and get scared. So i slept. That was really scary. 100/10 would not recommend.

Now I have lost all ability to express my emotions good or bad and after three years of sleeping maybe an Hour here or there I'm suffering from a total lack of motivation and inability to focus on anything.

I will be working with music playing in the background and sometimes I feel a little drowsy and I am suddenly woken up by like a tap on back or shoulder or by someone calling my name and I realise I have skipped the chorus of the song. This is so scary it's blowing my mind.

I think the effects are being overstated. 36 hours of no sleep is one night’s lost sleep, and while it’s very unpleasant it is very unlikely to give you hallucinations. I looked it up online and it said 3-4 days without sleep - that’s a lot more - before hallucinations.

  • @antaviousfreeman3191
    @antaviousfreeman3191 Před 4 měsíci

I once got extreme depression and was suicidal, lets just say i had this super bold willpower to not care for my self at all and i decided to stop sleeping all together.
I made it to day 3, it was also may 3rd by then reality was completely deteriorating until I forgot what was going on and why i even was staying up. Now sadly this happened in the morning of day 3 so in my psychotic paranoid hallucinating state I decided I need to sleep at night
The entire day of may 3rd (3 days no sleep) felt like it went on for a month i was basically transported through time and it was if I literally time traveled back to the morning and saw the sun rise and fall for many many times. It was worse than a drug trip and I believed for some weird reason that if i sleep I would die which only made things worse. Theres some crazy hallucinations about flying away from earth and seeing the world end. But its too long of a story

Cool stuff that I started being really dizzy after about 28-35 hours and sleepy at literally the 35th hour at the very end.

Missing one night of sleep is so normal I don't even notice it anymore. 2 days without sleep makes me feel sleepy but mostly irritated because I can't sleep. 3 days without sleep is the crazy day for me, but even then if I hadn't jumped in my car and driven across state it wouldn't have been that bad, driving was just a little more interesting. Three days has been the longest I've gone without sleep, but I feel like after a certain point you just adjust to the crazy in your head and life goes on. Or not. 😪

This is either not true or I am so mentally ill that all this seems normal to me. I have not slept in over 5 days and apart from being extremely exhausted both mentally and physically I don’t feel like things have changed much.

So uh, this is probably very bad but my father hasn't been able to get sleep for a while and It's been scaring my family for the entirety of 2020 (he started doing this at the start of 2020) He makes screaming noises at night and bangs on doors and walls. My family doesn't know what to do. This is very bad, and we need help :(

I remember one time I went about 35 hours without sleep and I legit saw a white shadowy apparition for like a millisecond. After that I was like “yeah I need to take my ass to sleep” took two Tylenol and slept 13 hours.
