  • The benefits of a Vegan Diet for the planet and for your health are lauded by many. Eating animal flesh is currently repulsive to millions of vegans all around the world. Animal rights are promoted by so many. But, what if there were more to the story? What if a vegan diet didn't actually make the Earth healthier? What if eating certain plant foods led to the death of millions of creatures?
Lierre Keith is the author of seven books, including The Vegetarian Myth: Food, Justice, and Sustainability, which has been called “the most important ecological book of this generation.” She is coauthor, with Derrick Jensen and Max Wilbert, of Bright Green Lies: How the Environmental Movement Lost Its Way and What We Can Do About It. She is the founder of WoLF (Women’s Liberation Front), a nonprofit which is suing the state of California on behalf of women forced to share prison cells with men. Yeah the cognitive dissonance kicks in whenever people get given info which contradicts their belief system. I grew up on an 80 acre dairy and mixed crop farm in Wisconsin. We raised dairy cattle, beef cattle, pigs, chickens, ducks, geese. The cattle were fed dry hay and fermented corn silage. The birds were free range, and ate insects and seeds. We hunted and ate rabbit, squirrel, and deer. We grew peas, carrots, sweet corn, and beets for cash. We had a garden with dozens and dozens of vegetables and fruits for canning and freezing. We drank raw milk. We fished for freshwater panfish. I still eat the same at 77. Walk 4 miles per day in AZ. Triglycerides 29, HDL 109. A1C 55, fasting insulin 2.9. My doctor can't believe it. A lifetime of a healthy diet.

I cook for a living and am deeply involved with food. We have one token vegan member that we cook special meals for. I see what he eats and cannot imagine he is healthy. We serve "Beyond Burgers" and impossible burgers. They smell absolutely disgusting. They smell worse than the absolute cheapest canned dog food. I try to convince people NOT TO EAT THEM. They are so incredibly highly processed... they are not food..... they are injected with some processed beet juice to appear as if they contain blood like a real burger. You would be so much better off to eat the beet and discard the processed beyondburger. Ugh!

I went carnivore 13 months ago. No more migraines, arthritis, chronic neuropathy, gum disease, lost weight, feel 29 not 49 and my whole outlook on everything is better.
BUT .... Every day for the last 5 years I was worried about coming home and finding my son dead. He came to me last month and said "okay, how does this diet of your work?" in days he was a changed man, he's only ketovore but I don't care. He eats high fat meat, loads of eggs and now goes to the gym 3/4 times a week. No more soy, no more oils, no pasta, no rice. After that first month, I felt awful, no energy, my gums were receding, and I generally felt unwell. I stumbled upon Dr. Berry's videos and I kept swiping them away and refused to watch them. I was a raw vegan for almost 10 years, mostly fruitarian, in my approach to heal from ME/CFS. I felt great for some years, before my health started spiraling down again. Fast... At first I thought it was just healing crisis, from detoxing out old junk. But eventually my body couldn't take it anymore. I ended up with totally depleted omega 3's reserves, oxalate poisoning, histamine issues, and not to mention several nutritional deficiencies. Through the 20 years suffering from ME, I had never been that sick. The worst thing was that I felt what I will call a shutdown of my nervous system after eating, were it felt like all my energy was sucked out of me, so it was even difficult to breath. But I had so many other symptoms as well. Deep depression, high anxiety, jittery all the time, aches and pains in joints, muscles and even shooting pain from deep inside the bones. Horrible leg cramps. Huge sleep issues. Migraines. Dizzyness. Just to name a few.
At first I was scared of eating fish again, afraid of it making me more sick. Because I unfortunately still believed in the vegan dogma of animal products being unhealthy. But eventually I had no other choice because my body started rejecting all kinds of fruits and veggies, the same I had eaten with no problems earlier. And to my biggest surprise; I had no reaction to fish. It felt completely NEUTRAL to my body. Same with eggs. No issues. It actually felt more calming to my system. Meat on the other hand was hard to digest in the beginning, I didn't have sufficient stomach acid. No surprise, after following a diet that totally lacked sodium and fat. So together with omega 3 supplements and fish, eggs - I slowly felt more balanced both physically, mentally and emotionally. But it took me quite some time to stop the vegan belief of meat being unhealthy. And now after close to 3 years, I've just started embarking on a carnivore diet in order to heal my body and mind. Gosh; here I have been suffering from gerd for many years. And it totally stopped when I went carnivore! And your videos are also helping me a lot! Thank you ❤

Vegans age like dried up people and their cognition declines because they aren’t getting enough fats in their brain. I have a lot of really young friends who are raw vegan and I’ve noticed how absent minded they are. Curry pumpkin.

I went vegan 5 years ago. Stayed one for three years. Those were the hardest years for me:
    1. Having to literally eat all day to stay satiated, like the gorillas do.
    2. Being bloated all the time, and having huge and smelly - let's put it straight - farts, every 30 minutes, to the point I wanted to be alone to be able to let them rip and release the pressure and pain in my stomach.
    3. Not being able to gain muscle weight, yet easily gaining fat weight.
    4. Having very notable weight fluctuations, despite watching and weighing and measuring all my food, literally using a kitchen scale for everything I ate.
Now, 2 years carnivore, eating an occasional leaf of salad, 3 (three pieces) berries every month, but 99% is just red meet, chicken, turkey, eggs and butter.
My weight is stable, when I eat and I'm satisfied, I can feel that I don't want to eat anymore. Before, I would only stop eating when it would hurt so much, I couldn't sit anymore and had to lie down. I feel normal, healthy and strong. Over 40 now.

This is my second time watching (watched live yesterday and watching again now). And the reason I'm so interested is because I'm trying my best to understand how folks get into being vegan, how they think, and if / how what they think changes once these concepts are presented to them. I'm ketovore and a regenerative farmer, so I understand this side of things very well. But I want to better understand the vegan thought process so that I can better educate folks who might eventually visit my farm.
That being said, I would think eggs would be one of the easiest animal-based foods for someone who is vegan to eat. A hen is going to lay eggs regardless of the environment she's in, and if she isn't living with any roosters those eggs aren't going to be fertilized. So by collecting and eating eggs we aren't forcing anything on the hen and we aren't killing her babies. If uncollected those eggs would either be eaten by a predator or left to decompose, yet they can be used for food for people who need it without bringing harm to anything. In many cases even milk can be collected without harm to a mother or baby. Many dairy animals produce more milk and for much longer than their babies drink it. Dairy goats often like to wean their kids within a few weeks, but continue to produce milk for months after their kids have fully weaned. Milking them regularly until they dry out naturally actually helps them. It keeps the skin and muscles of and around the udder in good condition and helps to prevent mastitis. And while folks argue the health benefits of cow's milk, goat milk can actually be used as a replacement for synthetic baby formula. It's MUCH healthier than synthetic formula as it has enzymes and bacteria that support gut health without any added chemicals, synthetic vitamins, or preservatives. Goat milk is also beneficial for us beyond infancy and childhood. We're essentially just making use of something that would be there anyway but might otherwise go to waste. And from it we can make a host of other healthful foods.

Hens nowadays produce eggs every day except in the winter (when they produce none unless you put them through unnatural conditions which of course they do in the egg industry) whereas in the wild hens produce 12 to 14 eggs a year. Backyards hens come from hatcheries where about 50% are born male and 50% female. They keep the females that they will sell to people for backyard hens when the male chicks are being ground up alive or suffocated to death. So I would not say that babies are not killed and that we aren't forcing anything on the hens where in those hatcheries the chicks never see the protective wings of their moms like in the wild.
You can understand that dairy follows the same process.

If you want to understand how folks get into being vegan you should talk to them or reach out to long-term vegan doctors and communities and not try to learn this by watching a carnivore channel with a former psuedo-vegetarian trying to make a living on bashing vegan and vegetarian diets. Most persons trying a "diet" fail and often people fail or hate carnivore and keto (which can be dangerous). This is all pretty surface level stuff in this video with no push-back on the shallow logic from an active vegan in the conversation. It's basically an ad to feel-good about raising and killing animals to eat. The tropes applied one-sided to vegans here are funny; "most vegans have never seen a farm" if that's true then most people have never seen one- I drive past them all the time and I have even worked on a farm that raised and baled hay and alfalfa and also raised cows and horses. I have had numerous gardens over the years, so don't even understand that comment in reply to your post. Humans don't need cow milk because it is very unlike human milk and only humans drink the milk of other animals. Dairy cows lead miserable lives for the most part. I don't find any compelling science for humans needing cow milk and your comments about dairy, absent supporting research, don't mean much.

Lierre I read your book a couple of years ago and it was one of the most sincere and heartbreaking narratives I’ve ever read. You steel-manned the vegan arguments and then obliterated them, without any nastiness. I grew up on NZ high country farms and was never tempted by veganism. But I can see every day in the city how people become so detached from the natural world that they will buy these poor arguments. Appreciate your work.

This way of eating has improved her health and I went vegan WFPB to support her and now I can't imagine going back to eating animal products. I see so many people around me that eat animal products that have so many health issues.

After experiencing both plant-based and carnivore diets, I mostly believe now that it really depends on how these people do the diets and the quality of their food. Some say "I did the diet right and healthy" but there are some issues with what's considered 'healthy' on a vegan diet (or any diet). And even then, it's extremely common for people to overlook or underlook things that could be a problem in their diet. Especially since we don't prepare food properly in the u.s. and certain other countries 😩 (like foods with anti-nutrients). Also I talked with someone who use to always get yeast infections, they said their yeast infections went away when they went vegan, even though they eat lots of fruit. So there was something causing those infections that had nothing to do with carbs. Not saying that carbs aren't an issue for many, many people do need a break from them to heal. But if the issue comes back every time you try to eat one piece of fruit then the root cause hasn't been addressed, and understandably some people would just stay carnivore since it works for them. I've also noticed carb addiction being a big reason why carnivore works for people (ending their cravings), and I can say that my cravings didn't go away on carnivore. My cravings didn't get better until I gradually introduced fermented sauerkraut and took probiotics. I believe there's a serious bacterial imbalance issue behind all of this. I was fine on plant-based until I was prescribed antibiotics and developed PTSD around the same time :/ that dangerous combo wiped out much of my bacteria and thus the ability to digest food properly

When I started nursing my son, this was 2004, I started craving steak for the first time in my life and I felt so guilty. A friend recommended Lierre's book and everything turned upside down-rather everything that WAS upside down finally turned right side up. The most amazing change was my mental health. Dear Dr Berry, I do so like your informative videos. I spent 6 years of my life learning everything I could find out about food and diet. I know the leaders of the various factions in the food wars battle. I've followed the information and the disinformation. I really wish we would all stop fighting. I'm almost 75 years old and if I could pick the perfect diet for myself it would be a diet of fish and fruit on some tropical island in the Pacific. Unfortunately I live in the frozen north of Toronto Ontario Canada. I feel so bad when I see folks getting into a vegetarian versus meat eating argument. This is what I have learned. Approximately 49% of people are blood type O. About 38% are type A. About 10% are type B and about 3% are type AB. The O types are the natural carnivores. The A types are the natural herbavores. The A and AB types are the natural omnivores. There's a preferred diet for every blood type. Whether or not you're Rh positive or Rh negative is not a factor in your proper diet. We should all be eating the diet which is best for our physical, mental and emotional health. There is no one perfect diet for everyone on the planet. That is absurdity insane. Unless of course you are talking about absolutely everyone avoiding the Standard American Diet, processed food, junk food, fast food, convenience food, packaged food, imitation food and the latest invention, fake food. That's the food we should all be up in arms against not whether we prefer to shop in the produce isle or the meat isle. Interestingly enough, type O's, the carnivores, live the longest because they have the fewest heart attacks. The A's, the omnivores have the shortest life spans. And, the B's and AB's have the worst overall health. Therefore, eating meat will not shorten your life and eating grains and veggies will not extend your life. It's actually the opposite. You have been lied to. My blood type, O negative, puts me in the dominant food group, the carnivore camp, and I really do understand the rise of the carnivore push back against the religious herbavore camp who have been so vocal about pushing their moral agenda and influencing educational institutions, research studies and published results. AKA, the Seventh Day Adventist Church folks which began back with the creation of John Kellogg's Corn Flakes to prevent teen boys from masturbating. These folks are silent, highly motivated and deadly serious in their agenda. On the other hand you have the giant food/drug corporations whose god is financial profit for a few at the cost of the health of health of the masses. Yes, they want you fat and sick and addicted to prescription drugs. It's all profit for them. Let's not fight between whether we choose to eat primarily animal foods or rather we prefer to eat primarily plant foods. No plant wants to be eaten any more than any animal does. But we're human and we gotta eat and we're definitely top dog on the food chain. We all need to say grace before we chow down no matter what we choose to eat. God bless you all. 😊

Vegetarian for 47 years, i started introducing meat and fish last year, working towards a carnivore lifestyle now, I wish I had people around me like you guys when I was 9 years old, rather than the Vegetarian/vegan lies I was so influenced by, bless my parents, I was a complete nughtmare, and they were in fact right, it made me very ill, I am nearly 60, sadly my parents are not here to see me changing my lifestyle, just wish I had come to this years ago!
It saddens me greatly the amount of people, especially young people, that are listening the way I did to all the lies, and starting on their Vegetarian/vegan way of life and certainly their jouney just like mine into certain ill health.

I've been vegan for 5 years, lots of fruits, salads, nuts, seeds, legumes. I happen to love these foods. I remember as a child gagging on milk and beef, and always being carsick after an egg breakfast. I developed a near fatal autoimmune disease at age 23 while eating the standard American diet, including dairy and animal products. I'm 65 now and have come to understand that i had sub clinical deficiencies and low thyroid which led to my health issues. I think it's very crucial to find a doctor who will do functional lab work to identify deficiencies and food sensitivites instead of assuming that one type of diet is superior to another. God eventually gave humans permission to eat animals but remember that we were originally created for the Garden of Eden. Genesis 1:29-30: Then God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree which has fruit yielding seed; it shall be food for you; and to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the sky and to every thing that moves on the earth which has life, I have given every green plant for food”; and it was so. Then after the fall: Genesis 9:3-4 Every moving thing that is alive shall be food for you; I give all to you, as I gave the green plant. Only you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood.
So any food can be healthy depending on the individual's specific needs. Its not one diet vs. another.

Plants also send nutrients through the route networks to neighboring trees. Some plants put out insecticides if a neighboring plant close to them is being invaded. Vegans are totally taking lives and eating things that used to be alive as well. It is that circle of life. Things must die for other things to live.

But you are right the deforestation of the Amazon is caused by one animal and it's not a bull but we the humans. Other animals aren't as dumb as humans who destroy the environment that they live in. Yes and not only is death natural and ok, animals do not experience life, death and pain the way we do - we can't anthropomorphize them. they have their own way of being and living and experiencing things and we shouldn't take that away from them in order to make ourselves feel better.

This was an awesome conversation! I appreciate this video Dr Berry! Lierre is awesome and feel the same way about life. I remember first hearing about monocropping and how damaging it really is on Joe Rogans podcast many years ago. It’s honestly just as horrible if not worse than factory farming of animals 😢. As much as I can on my budget I eat food from what I call happy animals. Animals being animals, getting sunshine, not being stressed, eating what they are supposed to eat.
I hope we haven’t completely destroyed the Earth 🌎 and can come back from the all damage we humans have done and get back to regenerative agriculture. Thanks again, Lierre is really awesome, it is a circle of life, stop trying to draw lines!

I really needed to hear her. I've been a vegetarian for decades (I did eat eggs n some dairy). I've been pretty healthy and I'm 70. I have had bouts of bad depression and gained a huge amount of weight since menopause. I've been going pure plant based in the last couple of years. I cannot lose weight, I'm tired, getting arthritis, etc. In the past month I went on keto and made my self eat meat. I emotionally feel bad about this but I'm feeling better physically! So I began watching videos to reeducate and this popped up. I'm actually teary eyed watching. I hate that I'm eating animals but I'm forced to see the benefits. I appreciate Lierre's passion and info/stories. I feel better about this. Thank you. HOWEVER we ALL really need to speak up about the horrors of the currant way food animals are treated. We need to demand a better way. I will try to get pasture raised. That matters.

Another different note about the different lifestyles I was thinking about is meal prepping. Vegan and vegetarian dishes don't have a terribly long shelf life and so they need to almost constantly be cooking or thinking about food. I put a beef brisket in my slow cooker last Sunday. I put a pork roast in my slow cooker in it on Monday. I've had a busy week. I've been able to eat off those 2 low effort cooks all week in minutes.

I've been more or less vegetarian for around 20 years. For a year I was a militant vegan and a member of PETA. My health is awful. Funnily enough, I checked Lierre's book out from the library this week, so that was neat to see this interview. So much of what she talks about in the vegetarian/vegan sphere I understand. As Lierre says in her book, understanding the circle of life and reconciling yourself to it is "adult knowledge"; it's part of maturing and healing. I very much appreciate her research on how much destruction takes place in agriculture and comparisons with animal husbandry. Things are changing. I discovered the carnivore diet a couple weeks ago, and it blew my mind. At the same time, a friend invited me to his farm to help him and his wife kill and butcher a couple ducks -- first time I've ever killed anything outside of fish. Now I want to go out with some of my hunter friends to learn how to dress a deer. Within the next 12 months, in going to get some rabbits to raise for meat. I'm looking forward to a future of good health, and helping others in my community via interviews such as this by those in the carnivore-sphere. Thank you, Dr. Berry and Lierre, for all your work!

I'm almost 86 and I went keto and intermittent fasting only 5 years ago. After I lost 90 lb I settled on eating one (occasionally two) meals a day, no sugar in any form, no food with wheat or rice in it, no soft drinks, no sweeteners of any kind. My meals are boring, but, in all honesty I've always liked broccoli, cailiflower, Brussels sprouts. We're fortunate to have a weekly "farmer's" market within walking distance so we almost never eat any packaged food. Thank you Dr Ken!
