Strip the Finish off your home's current door to begin this process of Staining and Varnishing, or purchase a budget drop-in replacement Wood Door from your local Hardware Store! Staining a Replacement Wood Door, or Refinishing an old wood door is an easy way to improve the looks of your home, as well as increase the resale value!
Start by using a Power Sander (goo.gl/uD9lG9) and Sanding with the Grain of the Wood. This is done to remove any milling marks which may stand out after the stain is applied. Dings and Scratches should also be sanded down as much as possible to remove the depth of the imperfection. Milling Marks can be straight or circular etchings which can be difficult to see without viewing from multiple angles. These mill marks should be lightly sanded to remove the lines from visibility. DO NOT over sand the door, as it can close the pores of the wood, which can cause finish variations when dry. If the door is really over-sanded, it can burn the wood which is tedious to fix.
If possible, a Paint Sprayer or Paint Gun (goo.gl/lk899A), with or without a pressure pot, can make the job of staining, sealing, or varnishing a wood door quicker, and allow the sprayed product to lay down flat on the wood (no brush lines). But for small projects, like one door, using a hand brush and numerous rags can also provide a great looking finished wood door!
Staining the wood doors, then wiping them dry immediately after, is followed by applying a Sealer coat for protection and any glossy look that is wanted.
Once the Sealer has dried for the designated time, the Interior Wood Door is sprayed with Varnish to cover any potential blemishes, provide a textured look, and further protect the door from future use. Varnishing should be not wiped away and allowed to dry, which is why it is important to not apply too much varnish product at once.
This quick and easy process has a work time of approximately 2-4 hrs per wood door, and includes prep and clean up time. Dry time can range based on product used, and type of wood door, but is generally between 24-72 hrs total.

Great job! I really got a lot out of this video and I've watched several. Good content, direct, concise, informative, but not too wordy and off-topic. I'm sure I'll watch it several times. Thanks!
For God's sake, man -- use a fricken respirator. Even if it's water-based, you don't want that microscopic crap in your lungs. 15 years from now, you'll thank me.
Tom C he did
Looks gorgeous!
Im staining Birch wood, im thinking of spraying it with my hvlp gun and im trying to prevent blochiing. should i go ahead and use the shellac wood conditioner before to minimize bloching?
Perfect job!
Looks great! Tip: Wear a mask and gloves that’s serious lung damage over long term use otherwise.
Job well done... great vid... what grit in the 3m sanding pads..(sanding sealer)?
This is the exact color I'm looking for. What stain is this?
Good job 👍
Thanks so much!!👍💜
did you use a water based varnish? Satin or semi?
Good job.
I spray with the fan horizontal saves the back
Thank u for your video but i have a question for u... i build a gazebo in my backyard and i used stain in all my wood and then i used a seal protector but 3 months ago i start notice some white spot s on the wood do u have a idea why this happened? And what can i do to fix it thank u so much
Miguel Segovia was it sap? If so the wood needed to age in the sun a little more before staining. Mineral sprits should get it if its sap
nice job ,i undersatnd the safety but anyway great job
What sprayer do you have?
Shocking!!
Is this an oil based stain??
Wow! Great work. You really showed how quickly it can all be done. Wear that mask though!!
Norm from Montreal, Canada
I need job same same work wood Degorrson pant poolish
How are you cleaning the door after sanding?
Use what is called a “tack cloth” its basically a really sticky rag that is used to whipe up dust after sanding. You just rub it all over the door after
Nice work - what ever they are paying you, its not enough.
Not sure if this really is a "DYI" project... Need an air paint gun, big air compressor, and most of all, a huge space where you can spray stain and finish in (= not my home garage). A nice job though :)
Probably make sure you seal the tops and bottoms of the doors so it doesn't void the manufacturer warranty....
What's the point of spraying if you're going to wipe it out,
Where are your cloves and mask?
To anyone watching this, DO NOT FOLLOW THIS!!! Waterborne paint still has esters that will shorten your life if you don't take the proper precautions. No respirator, no gloves and bad paint technique. I painted professionally for years and owned my own shop. If I caught anyone doing this I would have fired them immediately.
Why varnish and not a lacquer
Chris Lundstrom maybe because lacquer is more expensive and some stains are not compatible with lacquer varnish
hmmm.....why i don't see any safety
You may go to WoodPrix website if you'd like to make it yourself guys.
Too much spots not even, you should use a conditioner before
Go to woodprix if you'd like to build it yourself.
Everything in this video is wrong, there's a reason why when you choose to spray you don't wipe, also a 511 tip to spray a finish coat its ridiculous, if you're using an Airless sprayer which for stain its not recommended you will use a 211 or 311 tip for a fine finish, and HVLP sprayer should be the right sprayer for this job. I have 20 years in this business and proper training thru the apprenticeship program from the union believe me this is Not the right way to do this.
Carlos Chirinos this guy is an idiot. Why was her shooting into the air every time he was at the end. I'm sorry dude but you don't know what you are doing and have clearly not been trained correctly.
he use a pressure tank, maybe to much air pressure but it's faster to apply wiping stain with a gun and wipe it after than apply it with a rag. sorry for my English !!
Dude, need at least N95 for dust and respotator for VOC id stain...spend 40 bucks and save yourself silicosis and COPD
Go to WoodPrix page if you want to learn how to build it yourself
You’re not using GLOVES with your stain cloths😳😳😳WTHE??!!!!
I really like the Stodoys plans.
I watched this video cringing the whole time! Where the heck is the respirators and gloves? I can’t even focus on the actual job bc this is just not safe practice at all, good luck to you guys geez
Hahahahahaa
Looks shite to me, where is your matching out? Even id you dont match out you should always mist a little light fast colour between coats especially on water based lacquer. Leave it to the experts.
Where are your expert videos?
@@I-sed-no I am long retired, don't think I would have done videos anyway. My grievance (although probably not very clearly made) was more about the amount of people commenting on what a wonderful video it was, when clearly they haven't got a f***ing clue.
Exactly never answered what type of stain it was. Wiping, penetrating, gel, oil ,water.
that's a fuck up job
WTF ?????
What a train wreck. No mask. Has no idea how to adjust his gun -= especially in the beginning when he
s striping the damn door. This is how you don't stain a door - or anything else for that matter.
i bit sloppy if you ask me…..by the way, i have 40 years experience earning a living doing what those boys did there…..
8000RPMS what was sloppy about it, he simply sprayed the stain, rag it off, sealed the stain, sand the sealer and apllied the clear, can you please point out what was so sloppy about his work?
Could you tell me the color of stain you used for those doors ?? Regardless of what all these jerks are saying ...I think the doors are beautiful...
@ Duarte Handyman Services LLC The fundamentals were sloppy no gloves,no glasses,no respirators. You left out the part to blow off sealer dust then use a tac cloth before spraying top coat.
OMG he missed up beautiful doors who is even hiring these type of painters?
C’mon Man !!!! No gloves when staining and no respirator while spraying ! I guess you love all those toxic chemicals in your body
Gary Havens he puts it on come on
Doors look terrible
