Spraying Stain? DOES IT WORK???

  • Here is my method on using my HVLP Fuji Spray system (Q4 Platinum) to get 8 barn doors stained in under 30 minutes and that included a color change! I clocked myself spraying a door from start to finish in about 3 minutes. This method can get you not only fast turnover but also minimal use of product. It only took me around 3/4 of a cup of product (around 2 inches deep in the spray cup) to spray 6 doors and then I changed to a new color for the remaining 2 doors. If you have an HVLP, you should really give this a try!

    Spraying stain is probably one of the easiest methods for finishing. Not only is it fast but it’s efficient when it comes to product use. You’ll be able to save product while still getting the job done in record time.

Do you have any suggestions for someone just starting out and what to buy to spray both oil-based and water-based stains and clear coats? @@rhwoodshop thank you for your reply! Does letting it sink in just help with durability or is there more to it than that?

    • @rhwoodshop
      @rhwoodshop  Před 3 lety +2

      No, stain has nothing to do with durability, only color. Some wood species require more set time due to the hardness factor of the wood itself. Since I am applying it to a very soft wood, it does not require a lot of set time in order to achieve the color.

    • @rhwoodshop
      @rhwoodshop  Před 2 lety +2

      It really depends on the type of wood that you were staining. Something very soft might require a conditioner so the stain can be absorbed more equally over the entire surface area. If not you will get a blotchy stained look. However, for people that are wanting a rustic look, blotching is not a problem for them

      If you were trying to go darker then adding the same of the existing color only works if you allow the stain to sit longer on the surface. Try waiting about 3 to 5 minutes before wiping off the excess. Why wipe up the extra stain after you spray? It tells me you still sprayed it on too heavy, and you still ended up with blotches. Wouldn't it be better if you spray a very light, even coat, and then after the first coat has dried, spray a second light coat, if needed to get a darker color? Wouldn't that eliminate virtually all the blotches?

      You go heavy on the spray so the wood can take it, then you wipe away all that didn’t soak in. And no, stain reactivates itself when it dries and that would look bad to do a light coat then another coat to darken it, that’s called “shading” there’s also “glazing” and that’s a whole nother thing the blotchiness you see is just how grain takes sometimes you can eliminate the blotchiness by sanding deeper before staining or conditioning the wood first if you notice after staining you have to sand the light spots and re-stain and you gotta feather it out
