- Why Caterpillar Stopped Making On-Highway Truck Engines
With 2021 sales and revenues of $51.0 billion, Caterpillar Inc. is the world’s leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, off-highway diesel and natural gas engines, industrial gas turbines and diesel-electric locomotives.
But with such a big company, how come they stopped producing on-highway truck engines back in 2010?
Let's take a look at it.

The Cat 3406 put food on the table at this house for many years. Never had a road breakdown and at times got top fuel economy for the company I leased to. Pretty hard to beat that. It would also start at -20 when even my Jeep Cherokee wouldn't. The Kenworth is still with me.

Started driving in March 88. A company truck, I drove for from 92-98, had nothing but 3406E's in their trucks. then As an Owner/Operator 98-2005, own authority, I ran a 1994 T-600 with a 3406 A, turned wide open, a 13 speed with 3:90 rears; got good fuel mileage, made good money with that truck. Never had any problems with the 3406 Cat's. Good and strong running engines. I sold out when diesel fuel became more than gasoline, and all owner expenses began going up, while freight rates went down. I drove other peoples' trucks up until Dec 2022. 33 yrs. trucking. I retired.

Famous last words. Don't worry, you will deprived of pre emissions engines soon enough.
I remember, about 15 years ago, I was talking with a friend who operated a fleet of heavy-haul trucks in his business. He was telling me that his CAT rep had told him that the EPA had simply made it impossible to produce a truck engine without having over-bearing oversight from the Government. At that point CAT simply decided to only produce engines for off-road vehicles. You cannot believe the reactions of a huge amount of truckers who had spent the last 20 years before that fine-tuning their truck-engine option to get, what they believed, was the best truck engine. Cummins has stepped-up to fill the void and, to their credit, Detroit Diesel has improved their products hugely where you can actually not use the name Detroit without a four-letter word accompanying it. I truly believe that this effort by the EPA was just the beginning of what we are seeing now to destroy the American trucking industry from the inside-out. Shameful!
The EPA is third behind only the IRS and ATF for the government appendages clawing away at freedoms. All three should not be disbanded but utterly destroyed.
the EPA takes it's orders from an autistic teenage girl
It's as easy to buy a scientist as it is a politician. They used Junk Science to drive up the cost of diesel fuel and engines while driving down durability and cost effectiveness. (Diesel used to be significantly cheaper than gasoline before all the pointless emissions crap was tacked on.) Now they're trying to use Junk Science to try and get rid of gas stoves.
Once you got to about 1990s standards, the major problems of air pollution were effectively solved. Government doesn't like problems that are solved, they want to pretend that there is still a problem. So they create them, often out of whole cloth.
@@Crosshair84 Could not agree more. All you have to do is get on a plane and arrive anywhere in Europe. 1) Your taxi will be a diesel. 2) At least 1/2 your friends will have diesel cars. Why do you think that is? Right!!! Diesel is lower on the cracking tower at the refinery and so it's cheaper to make.
Mostly Interested you are absolutely correct.
I worked for Cat as a truck shop manager and then later as a contractor with oshkosh trucks with the military side. The US military trucks are almost all Caterpillar powered. They don't break down a lot like this guy implied. With the military they don't worry about emissions anymore which change to frequently and are very expensive. Win for Caterpillar and the US military.

I work for "the big Yellow Machine" I was at an employee meeting when that was announced. The management told us there was no money in on highway truck engines. Some of us laughed because we knew it was about meeting emissions....or the lack of.
Was a truck driver for 40 years, had many different combinations of truck brands and engines. By far my choice was Peterbilt and Cat. Was sad to see them leave the highway market. Many of my long time truck driving friends felt the same was. Too bad the government as usual had to ruin something they had no business getting involved in. Be safe out there!

Yeah, I really hate being able to live on earth. I'd much rather have trucks.
Cat could build a road engine that got 100mpg while pumping out pure water and the government would fine them for not getting 101 mpg and dripping water on the highways.
I bought a new Peterbilt 359 in 1980 with a 3406a model. It was painted white from the factory. I went on to truck for many years and all the trucks I owned had Cat 3406 models until they came out with the C15. They were all great motors with hardly ever any mechanical problems but those C15’s when flashed to max HP were…King of the Road !
I was wondering what engine my friends 84 Pete had. He has st called it a 400. I know it was turned up to 425. That was a beautiful truck. Long nose, Double sleeper. Which you didn't see as often then. Him n wife hauled Carpet to California and produce back. I got to drive it a few Times.

I've seen videos (this one including) saying the ACERT C-15's are unreliable, and yet in the real world, every trucker that I've met that had a C-15 under the hood, swears by them. I know from personal experience, C-15 is one of the more reliable engines. I bought an 07 International 9400i, with an ACERT C-15 that was built in 06. Just had my 1st rebuild done at around 1.4m miles! Also got it rerated from 435hp to 550hp, still rocking strong. When it comes to the 1st wave of emissions engines (mid 2000's), I'd trust an ACERT Cat over the 14L Detroit, Cummins ISX, Volvo's D12/D13, Paccar, and...hell, I'd trust anything over a MaxxForce!
Technically « Acert » beats the NOx produced by a massive air flow increase and the very high air to fuel ratio reduces all combustion hot spots where NOx are formed. The modern paper dry air cleaner air filtration being good but not perfect, when used in dusty applications such as compound harvesters, cement factories etc..those high breathers engines suffered from higher and faster oil contamination due to larger dust burned deposits than before, one of the root cause of this love and hate mixed customers feelings …
We can also regret that discussions with MB and their famous Juergen Schrempp ceo at the time, for a common R.and D. and new common trucks clean engines and larger clean engines families (after 3406 etc) failed miserably and this guy also failed all Daimler Chrysler Mitsubishi merges, etc. While good engineers could agree and understand each others very well in Peoria Mossville and wery vell is Stuttgart also, while MB had excellent combustions simulations software technology for trucks, cars and up to formulae 1 racing engines and CAT the lead on design and manufacturing excellent engines, but when such JS chairman, ceo whatever, produces his end, meetings MoU’s, Memos of Understanding, showing fondamental diversions from the previous discussions and therefore, not treating potential partners on equal and fair basis, etc, there are no real discussion, dialogue and negotiation possible…a win win solution wasn’t there anymore, forcing at the end, Cat to develop their own Acert clean combustion and eventually pull out of this truck market while having no highway truck assembly plants in house….unlike International Harvester , Mercedes-Benz group, etc..this is how one single individual can kill great projects by excessive ego, poor assessments and disrespect..😢
1.3 million miles on my MXS acert, never been apart yet, runs fine, pulls whatever I put behind it, I'd take it anywhere.
I was leased to a company that had over 100 Peterbilts with the Accert motor twin turbo and they had a lot of trouble with them . Now,the Cat C15 6NZ motors they had were a different story. They were very reliable and stayed in the Montfort lane all night long.

I was an engineer for Cummins during this time-period. Single biggest difference: while Caterpillar and most engine manufacturers viewed increasingly stringent emissions standards as a major obstacle and headache, Cummins embraced them completely. Cummins realized that stricter standards are coming no matter what, and the company with the best solutions will win the market over. They focused on developing the most advanced and efficient emissions solutions with particular emphasis on technologies that would be reliable, future-proof, and easy for truck manufacturers to integrate into their platforms. This was a major revolution in culture at Cummins leading up to 2010. Previously they were like everyone else and always struggled with new emissions standards. The hard work paid off as their biggest competitor, Cat, exited the on-highway market and Cummins took over. It was an impressive company to work for. Well run, and incredible engineering practices.
Adapt or die!
You're forgetting the fact that cummings were complete garbage when compared to a Cat
I hear Cat make the emissions excuse all the time, as if it was only Cat that had to adjust to the new rules.
In reality, either Cat couldn't, or wouldn't do the engineering that was needed.
It should also be pointed out that many European and Asian countries (not China) have stricter emissions standards. Japanese car manufactures Honda and Toyota have been showing up American Auto companies in the emissions/fuel efficiency category for decades.
@@EitriBrokkr Not really. All engine manufacturers struggled to produce reliable electronic control systems for their engines in the beginning. Which was one of the first steps towards meeting emissions standards, like the Cummins celect systems, CATs ACERT systems, and Detroits DDEC system in the 90's. Prior to that the old Cummins 855's and early N14's and CAT's 3406 many variants could go head to head if put in the same chassis, both engines could suck in a rag and spit it out the exhaust. Cummins just kept with times better, and the ISX15 is a pretty sweet power plant for modern trucks, a lot less tolerant to eating dust, but certainly powerful. Not saying they make a better engine than CAT but it sure isn't "garbage". You want garbage go to NAVISTAR that MAXXFORCE will throw you for loop.
I own a 3116 and a C-7. Great engines and have been very dependable for me.
Between the 3116 3126 and the C-7 it would be my guess the 3126 is best.
I’m in the fire service, the “best” diesel I’ve ever used was a Detroit 6v92, every engine that had one just screamed. Our crash trucks had 8v92, but they were heavy enough not to notice the power. As long as they were leaking oil, you knew they had enough!
Interesting piece of trivia: Back as far as 2003, CAT was changing out MAP tables after 90 minutes to fool the EPA test.
We had a "white smoke" lookup table and a "black smoke" lookup table that would be switched out after the time limit.
Try emissions testing one before and after that 90 minute mark.
hell yeah I wish cat would come back
I'm not a trucker or anything, but I know here on Brazil, some GMCs actually had the Caterpillar engine back in 90s (15-190 if I'm not wrong about their name, C3116) but they actually ended not gaining good popularity for their high cost maintenance (probably affected by the country) and "weak power" application and many other brands being on the market and selling the same division trucks (competing with a L1620 on that time wasn't easy).
There are a lot of praises around the globe about the well built and longevity of cat engines and equipments. Their engines still running strong even after decades of use vs the ones that are recently made in China.
i used to drive a KW tractor head powered by CAT 3406c it gives me a trouble free driving i can even drive it day or night hassle free,.but my employer has retired my rig ang give me a brandnew chinatruck powered by by a china made cummins and all i have now is a bunch of headache all things becomes a load of shit.

Best Cat truck engine I ever had was the 1693. Had to be careful when you let the clutch out. It had so much torque you could twist out the drive shaft.
The engine had so much torque it twisted the chassis coming off the line
Torque is related to hp/rpm *5252, if it didn’t have horsepower and it spin at the same RPM as the newer engines it probably didn’t have as much torque as people think they did.

Owned trucks for 15 years, had a total of 5. One, had a Cummins, and at 250k miles, it got traded for new with a Cat. Total Cat fleet, total Cat power snd hassle free. Closed the doors in 2000 because the handwriting was on the wall and I didn't like what I saw.
Miss that low growl and deep grunt of those Cats.
Like Pat said, the engines were good. What really happened is engines have a really small profit margin and PACCAR informed Cat they were going to manufacture their own engines. That meant a loss of 450 engines per day. The VP of engines pulled the plug on on-highway engines. The still make hundreds of engines per day that meet Tier 4F emmision standards in Texas, Japan, and Europe.

It was all about the EPA demands. Cat decided they weren't going to Continue to Neuter their Engines.
I worked for a Pete Dealer back then and was told by a higher up from Paccar that there was a disagreement with the owner of Cat and Peterbilt. Peterbilt wanted an engine that they could call a Paccar engine. Cat wanted their name on the engine. They could not come to an agreement, so Paccar said they would go with Cummings who agreed to put Paccar on their engines, and quit ordering Cat engines for any Paccar truck. That is what I was told back in the day.
Veiri Gaines out of Colorado owns almost 500 trucks with Cat engines.
@@Nozzlejockey2 It was all an EPA thing. Cat wasn't going to Neuter their Engines anymore than they already were by the EPA.

In 2000 I was buying a new Peterbilt. The dealer had two 379’s on his lot . They were identical trucks except one was silver with a Cummins and one was blue with a 6NZ C-15 18 speed, I told him I’ll take the blue one.He called me a few days before I was to pickup the blue Pete with the C15 and told me the silver Pete with a Cummins was ready to go, come and get it. I told him the deal is off….blue truck or nothing. He said the silver one is almost $5000 cheaper, I told him I didn’t want it if it was free ! He said ok we’ll get the blue on ready. Going up Wolf Creek, Cabbage, Look Out, 3Sisters, Monarch, Rabbit Ears, GrapeVine, Donner Summit… no truck ever passed that Blue C-15 !!
Smart move by Caterpillar due to the dark clouds on the horizon.
To sum it up, Cat used the wrong and uncompetitive technology that led to a dead end when it couldn’t be adapted to higher emission standards without a massive redesign. Most competitors are still very much road truck engine builders which have replaced the Cat engines and are happy with the extra business.
The mystery is how Cat meets current off-road emissions regulations with their own engines. Off-road standards have nearly caught up with on-road and currently almost universally require cooled EGR, DEF/Adblue, DPF, high pressure common-rail injection on multi-valve turbo or twin turbo with intercooler and so on. Basically the same kit as on-road engines.
The mystery is solved: We switched out data tables to make the engine perform to EPA standards, then switch it out with settings that provide competitive power for the customer after 90 minutes. All of the ACERT engines got around the problem like that, anyway.
@@francisreich51 Ah! The VW solution to emission standards. Good thinking by Cat.

Our Schoolbus Crown had that engine.
Great vid!!! 👍👍
Makes sense. CAT never really needed the on road market to be successful. Let's see if the EPA starts to regulate the construction industry as well. I know that last year California put really strict emissions rules on trucks. They cannot even enter the port if they are too old. California this year is regulating generators and lawnmowers for some reason. It really is a fraction of hours per year that these devices operated. Thankfully, I have my 2 stroke chain saw already.
Off road diesels have had the same emissions rules as on road since 2014.
@@southfork67 Not construction, backup generators or farm. Even in California, we get to use red diesel for farm.
@@samuelmcbride I sell new farm machinery for a living. You are incorrect. Final Tier 4 emissions rules took effect on off-road engines (tractors, construction, etc.) in 2014 with the exceptions of engines under 25 hp. They all have DPF, DEF, EGR, and all that crap.
@@southfork67 I believe the 2014 "mandate" was about Tier 1 emissions for off-road, not Tier 4. Tier 4 is definitely on-road now even to use it. In California, we cannot even operate Tier 1 off-road except in fleets where the average emission is calculated. Plus, we have to register it through an emissions center. That exception is only managed by NOx readings and not manufacturer Tier rating. Tier 4 mandate was supposed to start in 2022, but I don't think it went through. Tier 4 is largely done through enhanced diesel fuel. There are some changes in fuel delivery and urine exhaust treatment, but that is not really the engine. Tier 4 mandate was "supposed" to be 2015 when it was created by the EPA, but this was extended to 2022 last time I checked.
Anyway, a Tier 3 diesel can be made Tier 4 by simply adding some things and using new diesel fuel. In California, red diesel is not necessarily the low sulfur variety and is allowed for use in ag equipment. There are also a few exceptions. If an engine builder has any unused inventory of any Tier, they can sell it legally. If it is emergency, they can sell it.
It does not mean that someone that sells equipment will be able to get less than Tier 4 diesel engines from a manufacturer. It is just not illegal to do so. You can get a Tier 3 Polaris Crew Cab in a crate and sell it legally.
The government won't be happy until everything has zero emissions. They'd outlaw horses. They're already whining about cows that fart.
Cat chose the wrong technology to meet the 2007 (ACERT, Clean Gas Injection and their regen system for the DPF) and knew it would have to take a different path to meet 2010. They bad mouthed their competitors with cooled EGR but the competition was able to meet the 2010 standards with cooled EGR, DPF, SCR and DEF. Navistar tried to meet 2010 standards with massive EGR instead of SCR, they kicked Cummins out of their trucks because they were using SCR and came very close to going under. A new CEO came in and begged Cummins to supply engines again to bail them out.
A Modern Cummins isn’t any more Reliable than the Transient Meth Head that shows up around my Shop. The reality is, they didn’t want to deal with the Bureaucracy of an incompetent EPA… Good for them! If more Companies did that, Then guys like me wouldn’t be paying $26K a Year to Service their Junk!

There’s nothing like hauling a cat powered truck with an Eaton 18 speed road ranger, none of the other brands do it for me like the Cat does.
It was an emissions thing. CAT didn't want to spend any more money on the DPF system. It was the right thing to do.
My deployments in Afghanistan we had Force Pro Cougars with C7s in them and they were so awesome. So much power that it would bounce the rear end of a 65,000lb truck like it was a 1/4 ton if it got stuck mud.
First time I've heard of a c7 with lots of power
@@stephenvalastro5678 I’m sure it’s different for truckers on the road hauling 80,000 pounds and a couple lot lizards at highway speeds, but they were perfect for us.
Thanks for your service brother. FMV have the Cats as well.
The issue isn’t really the emissions on their own. It’s the fact the government decided HOW you get to those emission levels. Regulating a certain level of emissions or even No emissions is one thing. Requiring specific parts that are literally DESIGNED to break is another.
Screw DEF
Designed to kill a diesel engine. And lobbied for by the manufacturer's of the def equipment.
I am a fleet mechanic for a public utility. Of course, the only Cat engines we have are in our off road equipment where the software is proprietary. There isn't much I can do with one. We don't own enough pieces of off road equipment to make it worth investing in the software.
Up until a couple years ago almost all of our on-road equipment was powered by Navistar. Our on-road equipment only racks up a few miles each year; but racks up a grip of hours. They drive a few miles to a jobsite then idle all day to run the PTO.
I think Navistar unfairly got a bad rap the last several years. The base engines held up remarkably well; it was the aftertreatment systems that were absolute garbage. Especially since our trucks idle all day which is torture on aftertreatment systems. Its not fair to blame Navistar for something forced onto them. They have done their best to be compliant at the expense of reliability.
Of course our newest trucks are using Cummins engines which have been fairly reliable. I have nothing against Cummins but I wouldn't say they are better. Aftertreatment systems have been around long enough now that manufacturers have started to figure out how to make them work efficiently.
I am not partial to Navistar, but its what I am used to. Their base engines were solid for the 30+ years I serviced them before aftertreatment came along
I like the Cat engine i wood like to see it come back

I miss having them in trucks. Now there is them junk Paccar engines in the KW and Peterbilt.
EPA emissions rule changes put our 70 year old trucking company out of business. Forcing diesel companies to meet fixed timing without enough development before launch, we had 3 turbo failures in the span of 6 months in a fleet of 7 trucks. At $15K for just parts required to repair each time (not under warranty), and broker-controlled rates / mile less than our break even rate at that time, we were forced into bankruptcy, equipment re-possessed by finance companies, and went out of business in 2011.
I won't say who the diesel company was that had all the turbo failures, but I will say we never had good luck with Cat motors.

Cat needs to come back.
All the emminsion restrictions and ppl wonder why all newer engines are junk weather 2 stroke to ships and everything in between
The ACERT was the death for cats on way highway engines. The cost to develop sticker emissions compliant engines just wasn't worth the time and effort to further design a compliant engine when their highway engines make such a small portion of their overall sales.
I work on c13 acerts and the ARD system was a disaster. They only last about 8 to 14 months before needing to be replaced.
The one thing cat got right was their CGI(egr). Great system, it takes exhaust gas after the DPF instead of like Cummins where they take it right off the exhaust manifold
Same problem with Navistar series 60. Absolutely bulletproof. I saw so much abuse of them in a company setting. There was no way to make them compliant after 2007. RIP

CAT 3406e and the early years 6nz motors are to me without a doubt some of the best motors produced for the long haul trucking crowd. Parts are reliable. Breakdowns are few. The EPA has ruined trucking and they're not done. The ACERT CAT C15s had problems because of the emissions requirements, and CAT decided to quit while they were ahead. They knew it would only get worse and the EPA would not stop with new requirements. Thanks EPA. And before you ask me if I want clean air to breathe, let me say this. They say the air coming out of a new semi truck with DPF etc is cleaner than the air going in. So mission accomplished? No? What's the issue then? Why keep putting out more restrictions?
Regen should not disable a tractor. 80 percent of maintenance of tractors is emissions. One boxes are expensive!
They, like all manufacturers, produced a few lemons along the way. Owned a 3126-powered motorhome that racked up $4000 of engine repairs over 2 years.
