Viewing on a larger screen is recommended due to the density of the score.
Here is Bill Wurtz's 'Might Quit' fully realized in sheet music form!
I decided to begin this project in late March to get a closer look and listen into what Bill Wurtz does in his songwriting to make his songs so unique. The idea was hugely inspired by June Lee's incredible transcription work on CZcams. I thought that I might have a go at a transcription video of my own!
I anticipated that the project would take me about a month to complete. That proved to be quite a gross underestimation.
The percussive elements of this tune proved particularly challenging to transcribe - taking me about three weeks alone to do them. Wurtz used more sound design in this song then I was initially anticipating, and I found it difficult at times to place a label on some percussive hits that I was hearing. Notes in the "PERC SFX" staff that have no label are present, but any sort of label would be cumbersome.
I initially produced a finished product with all fifteen staves on each page, but I realized that this was a sub-optimal viewing experience, especially with the majority of CZcams viewership coming from mobile devices. I decided that it would be better to hide empty staves on a page-by-page basis. This allowed to me to enlarge the staves and make the music more visible on a mobile device. For this reason, the synth, aux synth, and piano parts have been reduced to one staff where it was convenient.
Drumset notation follows standard placement conventions (Norman Weinberg). An instrument in the "Aux Percussion" staff is assigned to that particular position on the staff for the duration of the page. The instrument's first appearance is always marked.
Huge thanks goes to the Music Engraving Tips community on Facebook for their advice on how to approach the notation of the dense percussive elements. They also provided invaluable wisdom in regards to slur conventions for vocal parts, the practice of hyphenating partial words, and some suggestions for optimizing the readability of the keys lines.
Huge gratitude must also be given to my close friends. Their feedback as a second set of eyes and support in seeing this through was invaluable.
Specifically, Jamie Hopkings, a Toronto-based media composer, provided me with page dimension suggestions, as well as the idea to have an animated playhead following the score. His breakdown of Saturn from Gustav Holst's The Planets served as a reference in how a score can be excellently animated. The Saturn breakdown can be found here: • Saturn, the Bringer of...

Absolutely fantastic! I tried a similar project back in June-ish but i quickly gave up after realizing how dense this song is. Major props for pushing through this and bringing it to completion!

Thanks so much dude! Everyone! Check out Calvin's orchestral cover of Might Quit! Brilliant in its own right, and with lots of tasty reharms. 😋
It was surprising to me too how dense it was! As a casual listener, I had no idea what that there were even guitars! Makes me curious if his other songs are this dense. Perhaps another Wurtz transcription would be a good idea.
Thanks for the props, and props to you as well!!

Wow, incredible!!! How did you create the video for the transcription? I have done some transcriptions and wanted to display them in a movie format like this, but couldn't find a professional looking way in Sibelius. Also, how did you do that intro where all the notes fill out like that? So cool.

    • @daviddebonomalta
      @daviddebonomalta  Před 3 lety +2

Hey Elder G! The video was created through DaVinci Resolve.
That's cool that you'd like to do it! Basically, export as a PDF, take high res screenshots of each page, import them into a video editor, then work away!
The beginning effect where the notes fill out was done with Adobe After Effects. Vertical mask for the initial notes and staff lines. The rest of the notes were put on a separate layer and slowly revealed with a horizontal mask.
      Regards,
      David

Haha no worries Reletr! The left number in the ratio is the amount of notes in the quintuplet. The right number - 3, is the number of notes the quintuplet fits into.
In this case, it's 5 eighths in the duration of 3.

Secondly, I have felt for at least a few years now that what I have to say in music isn't worth putting up on CZcams, especially in regards to my own playing - it's sad but true. Thirdly, although I am constantly working on music or doing things that will benefit my voice in music, CZcams isn't always the end goal.
