This is like a chicken or the egg dilemma. Was Bill inspired by his 3D city to write a corner store song? Or did he model the cornerstore to match his song? Bless him either way, this is wonderful
I was just thinking that, does he write the music first or animate first.
@@Grosvenor77 He said he does the song first and video after
I think he usually conceptualizes them at the same time. But the song is always made before production of the video begins.
Seeing as building a city is a pretty standard lesson in 3D modeling courses, my guess would be that he built the city in the course of learning to model, that inspired him to write the song, then he fleshed out the particular store building and animated it. That's just speculation though.
You could ask on his website
This is probably the perfect song to introduce to someone who is new to bill wurtz. It feels like a normal, even tame one to us who are used to it, but to a newcomer it's tantalizingly normal, so they'll be constantly trying to figure out what's going to happen next but it never resolves.
but so many of them are perfect ;) personally I think history of the world is a better introduction because you get a sense of how Bill tells stories, and then when you go into these compressed songs they make sense :)

I’m entirely sure that this song is about childhood and nostalgia. Exploring a brand new world(the corner store) because your mom said you were finally old enough to run over there all by yourself like a “big boy”(‘I’m tall and handsome’) and buy some items. This song expresses the feeling of grandeur that a child feels when faced with a fun new experience.
I still remember the day I was old enough to run to the Red Apple for my dad, felt like a man lol.
Most of the later songs are just theming and there all metaphors for life and nostalgia this new stuff is like vaporwave visuals in a alternative way
1:57 - 2:27 idk why but this part just makes me happy. I especially love the magazine part.
I remember some people worrying when bill took all that time off of music to dedicate months to learning 3D graphics instead of the 2D stuff he was previously limited to, but I'm sure absolutely everyone realizes now how worth it the effort was -- this is an absolutely amazing spectacle.

I hate when music snobs pontificate, but I gotta tell you that the last twenty seconds of this song has an awesome progression that makes me feel a certain way.
I see this as more of a subjective expression than any form of pontification, he is just stating how the corner store makes himself feel and his opinions on it, not purporting them to be some undeniable truth for the most part.
I didn't think it was even possible to adequately recreate the "experimental early-80s CGI" kind of appeal with modern graphics. But here we are and I love it.

And not because I’ve been watching since “I’m still a piece of garbage”, but more like… I’m a child again? It’s weird, I just feel like I, experiencing something I watched as a young girl on WHYY or Noggin, Sprout. It’s a big comfort

I literally love my dollar tree by my house. I have gotten to know all the staff. I’ve had some legitimately toxic things happen to me at my youth group and the dollar tree is right next to it. So every time I leave youth group I go into the dollar tree and buy myself a soda and a box of candy and have a delightful chat with the guy who works that shift. This song literally illustrates my corner store.
Tell them bout this song, get em to play it!
Yea I have a dollar tree less than a block away
Cool!! Also I go to Youth Group too! My mom hosts it, she is a great woman!
Hope that situation gets better for you!
I always thought the ending of this song was great and really weird. It just seems so abrupt, like just when the chorus is really ramping up with the "around the world" melody doubled up, "then it closes." And from a technical level, it closes on the tonic, as like the most resting position the song can end in... but it doesn't FEEL like closure. It feels so unexpected, and considering it's the end of the song, weirdly final.
In the previous choruses, the "it closes" line doesn't end that way, it kinda keeps some tension, anticipation for the fact that the store's gonna be open tomorrow again. But the last one isn't like that, it sounds more like the store is closed down indefinitely. if the "corner store" really is a stand-in for "a place where you made childhood memories" then is this a bit like realizing that eventually those things won't be there anymore? rather than "it's open, you can go in there and you know you can", it's closed and you know you can't go in there anymore. and maybe you should have expected it, like how every chorus before has ended with the store closing, but it doesn't seem real until it actually ends. and you didn't get your closure. That's what the ending feels like to me.
Guess I can just replay the song if I want.
This is literally one the best songs i’ve ever heard in my entire life
