    The rice does need to be rinsed but "clear" is not really the yardstick and the more wet it becomes the more starch is going to leech out. Just thoroughly rinse until reasonably transparent and only stir gently. Unless your goal is super sticky rice its a very important step for nice fluffy grains.

      normally it only takes like 10 minutes of running water through the bowl and lightly stirring the rice every couple minutes. It should def not get soggy that quickly, but cleaning the rice does matter.

      Things that are translucent are sometimes referred to as "clear".
      The first rinse is always cloudy, but by the second (or third) it's translucent, and I let it go at that. Also, the amount of time spent in each rinse is important. Rinse, dump, rinse, dump, rinse, dump. It's less than 30 seconds total. If you let it sit, you're going to affect the cooking time. The age of the rice is important too, older rice is drier.
      Until I began cooking rice for sushi, I never knew there was so much to know about handling rice.

      @MadameMeowth Před rokem +21

      They could easily read the number correctly, not OP's fault the patients were lazy. If you can't double-check your number and call the correct place, then it's all on you. It sucks for them, but maybe next time confirm the clinic's number.

    • @DelightfullyGrace
      @DelightfullyGrace Před rokem +31

      Yeah, I used to be a caretaker for my granddad - we had a lot going on at the time, so if not for my mom being the one to handle the big appointments, I easily would’ve been fooled by a stunt like this, and it would’ve put my granddad through a lot since he wasn’t able to get around much (he’d be really sore after car rides especially).
      I feel bad for the patients, but I don’t blame OP either. The clinic really should’ve resolved the issue when it was brought to their attention. Letting their clients continue to call the wrong number, having no idea who that person was or what they could’ve said to them, was unprofessional. What if OP convinced them that they needed to “confirm their identity” or “confirm their card on file” by giving up private information? They really could’ve gotten scammed if they didn’t know better. It wouldn’t’ve taken much to at least space out the numbers a bit on the website, and it would’ve helped out their clients.

      Same here. Maybe it's easier to get appointments where other people live, but it's a nightmare here, and, no, we don't always get confirmations. Fun fact about rice. The reason you wash the rice is because if you didn't the rice will come out super sticky. This isn't true with all rice. But just washing it removes the starch that accumulated during processing and distribution. The 3 time or until it runs clear rule is basically a rule of thumb. In the kitchen, you have to be able to use your best judgement.

    I had a job where the meal amounts were inadequate (think $5 total for breakfast in a city where even fast food goes over that). So, while I am good at finding good, inexpensive places I did, on occasion, go over. BUT if I spent, say, $5.85, my company covered the first $5 and I was out of pocket $0.85. The allowed $5 was still reimbursed. It was irksome to be out the overage due to an inadequate allowance, but at least my actual allowance, that I was entitled to by the rules, was still covered.

      I had a job that occasionally required travelling for several days or weeks. We also had a small meal allowance that was inadequate unless you ate at McDonalds for every meal. However, there were times when I was working in an area where all of the restaurants within walking distance were crazy expensive. On a couple of occasions, I rented a car just so I would be able to drive and get an affordable meal. The other way around the limit was to create a dinner "meeting" with other employees and have one of us pay for everyone. For some reason, this was allowed.

    My rule of thumb for rice is wash it three times period. If the water's still cloudy it's still cloudy. The point is you got most of that surface starch and any particles from the polishing process (fun fact: most rice is polished to remove the outer layer that would normally make it brown rice) off of the rice. I never quite understood the "until the water's clear" notion because while you are washing rice it is also releasing the starch within the rice grains which, surprise surprise, clouds up the water again.

Then, after the owner settles the expense and smooths the situation over, OP upsets the client again by digging the issue back up, then starts deliberately overcharging the client out of spite. Model employee. Sounds to me like OP submitted the expense incorrectly.

    The rice thing, if you wash it properly, after 3x the water should run mostly clear. Mostly. Some folks don't include that one very important word. You do this to 1 wash the rice if any dirt from storage and 2, remove the excess starch that leaves rice gluey and nasty. Even sticky rice and sushi rice gets the same treatment so they're sticky, but not like school glue.

    Yeah, Alonzo's or Alfredo's or whatever Pizza over in Elmhurts, did full-page spreads with a bud's number instead. Maybe not the *exact* number but close enough, like -4981 vs -4891. Same issue, they just tell him to change his number. He started "taking orders", being rude when people would call to complain they hadn't gotten their pizza, telling people absurdly low prices for their orders, telling them the place doesn't do delivery anymore, just takeout, etc. The place suffered something like a week and a half before they changed their number to a "personalised" one, like 94-PIZZA or something.

    I worked for a small website shop where the owner knew his stuff when it came to design but not programming, which is what I did. He was wanting to rebrand to something hipper so he and the designers (I was spared this meeting) got together and made lists of adjectives and nouns that were "dynamic" and related to the industry. He then gave me the rather long lists and told me he wanted every combination of adjective + noun, adjective + adjective + noun and adjective + adjective + adjective + noun. I did some quick mental math and asked him if he was sure, and he impatiently replied, "Just do it." We did database-driven websites so I thought it would be best to just dump everything into a few tables and write some queries to loop through everything and display the combinations. Took less than 10 minutes to program. There are methods where you can easily display the first 100 or so results so I tested it like that to make sure the code worked then took off those restrictions and sent him the link... that after a few minutes of churning displayed millions of combinations. My hearing him exclaim, "WTF?" when it finally fully loaded brightened my day. I also displayed the number of results at the top of the page before the lists just to let him know what he had asked for.

    Never think staying under your Per Diem is a good thing/doing your company a "favor". All it does is show your management exactly what happened, you can exist with less and then this always happens. THEY DONT CARE IF ITS UNDER, they only care if its over.

    • @peterhuston7888
      @peterhuston7888 Před rokem +2

      Yes, but with the per diem story, there's another aspect to it. OPs company was fine with it, but their customer wasn't, perhaps because they felt like they shouldn't have been charged for that part (but rather OPs company). Still not OPs fault, though. And OPs manager should have definitely picked up the tab, since they approved his actions in advance.
