- The Hershey is the only surviving old style interurban electric railway in the western hemisphere. It takes about four hours to ride the line from just outside Havana to Matanzas, a city that lies 140 km to the east. Three trains depart each terminal each day, they meet at the center, Hershey, exchange batons and continue on. There are no signals and its all single track with trolley wire on wood poles. Two older, but heavily rebuilt cars still exist for railfan and tourist group charter, but I did not video them.
In December, the climate felt as comfortable as it is gorgeous on the day of this shooting. I hope all serious railfans take this journey of discovery of rural Cuban life via inter urban railway. Music by Puente Latino "Takes You There".
When I was living in Cuba I was use to ride this train a lot with my mom
Loved every minute of this - It may not be a bullettrain, but it oozes charm and personality. Thanks for a great upload. ^_- Greetings from Japan!
Great train, great people and thanks for uploading a great video
Thank you for your comment. One like this is surprisingly rare.
I had the good fortune to ride from Hershey to Canasi in April 2016, and also operate the controls part of the way. What an adventure. Hope this survives "modernization" and the inevitability of buses and automobiles as competition. Parts of the line will make a wonderful Cruise ship excursion from Havana, Matanzas and even Varadero ports of call. But "mind the gap"! And introduce decent toilet facilities.
thanks for a glimpse into cuba. cool trains.
Man I want to ride this train. Looks pretty satisfying to see the train moving in a long way, unlike other recreation train that is usually so slow.
Fascinating and timely! The samba music is a nice touch.
reconocimiento positivo!
positive appreciation!
personally, I'm already fed up with the serious aspects of Cuba, I propose, if it's still possible, an escape with the Hershey electric train!
I was on the train in February from Hersey to Jaruco, and was lucky to drive it for 10 kms, right into Jaruco. What a thrill, a boy hood dream to drive a train, after working for the railroad in office capacity, not the running trades.
It was a great experience, I was lucky to have a guide who knew what to do.and I got a video of me at the controls.

Muito legal esses vídeos pra gente conhecer o interior do país
100 % Cuban ambiance . Very good vídeo!
Wow.
Abraço do Brasil!!
Cool video!
Train jounery is fun if the area is underdeveloped. There is no race against time
I was raised at where it says 3:29
Pure exotism. It must be surely an adventure to ride this train, in every sense. But I like this kind of its old charm and character. It seems to be really worth visiting. Are these 2m platforms really supposed to be stations :O
Yes, those are high level platforms. It is fun, especially when seated in the center of the cab when train is moving ;)
is a oldest catalan train
they use 1435mm rail gauge? looks like they are not clean up the track regularly since the grass are covering up most part of the rail. the chance to have derailment is high
If you notice, most if not all of the railroads in Cuba use concrete ties. I think you're imagining a problem that doesn't exist
I know that you're joking, but there used to be a train that ran all the way to Key West Florida, and then it was just a short ferry ride to cuba
YA NO. TRABAJA. AHORA. 2023....
SE. LLAMABA...
Buen video
Pésima la música
