    In the 1990 Nintendo World Championship competition, Tetris was the game to beat. The winner, Thor Aackerlund, is still seen by many as the best to have ever played. Today’s Classic Tetris tournaments are played on that same version of Nintendo Tetris, using original NES game systems, controllers, and Tetris cartridges. In 2009, a player named Harry Hong became the first to achieve the highest possible score of 999,999 points. Inspired by this achievement, filmmaker Adam Cornelius produced a short film about Harry called “Max-Out”, and launched a Kickstarter campaign to document the world of competitive Tetris. As word of Adam’s Kickstarter campaign spread, rumors of max-out scores from other Tetris Masters began to surface, threatening the supremacy of Harry’s achievement. With the help of Nintendo World Championship veteran Robin Mihara, Adam searched for all of the Tetris Masters he could find. Jonas Neubauer emerged as an early max-out artist, along with the elusive original champ Thor Aackerlund. The idea of bringing these and other NES Tetris Masters together to compete in a live tournament became an obvious and irresistible proposition which was artfully captured in the 2010 feature length documentary Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters. Under the leadership of producer Vince Clemente, The Classic Tetris World Championship is currently held at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, an annual event which has hosted the tournament since 2012. Chuck Van Pelt and his organizing committee have built the PRGE into the largest classic gaming expo in the country, drawing around 10,000 attendees. Every year the scores get higher. Rivalries are revisited once again, and new players emerge to challenge the old guard. Over 100 players have maxed out the score now. Will you be the next? ecstasyoforder.com thectwc.com

Last time I truly watched was 2019 but ever since 2020, I can't find Harry/Buco/Josep/Koryan/GreenTea/Jani/Svavar/SQR/Alex/Quaid (Sean/Hauser/ whatever he goes by now)/Trey in any CTWC videos. Did they all retire after after Jonas or just still recovering from the Pandemic? For me, having watched since 2016's final, it truly does not feel same without ANY of the faces I recognized for those years til now, but glad to at least hear Chris and James commentating. Don't get me wrong new players are great to have like Joseph/Danqz in 2019 but It's all new players using rolling and I personally don't find it enjoyable to watch at all, and it legit feels way too different.

    How many times can I hear James talking about the "Tetris bag" and "Tetris rate" and comparing this game to the newer versions of Tetris because he has nothing to talk about and he needs to fill time while Sharky gives a very nice commentary on the actual games.

    Sadly the new players are boring. Tetris has gone down hill in last few years cause these guys have no character.

    •  Před rokem

      Wow, it looks like I've written this myself. I've commented something very similar in a Quaid's video, hoping the message would get to Jeff. The old guard made Tetris enjoyable and CHARISMATIC. CHARISMA is what Tetris really need, not giga scores. What the tetris community is missing is that you do not root for scores, you root for players, and it's entirely up to the players to have or not charisma. The old guard was charming, fun, likeable, goofy in a good way, and for DAS players, extremely talented. The new kids are just cookie-cutter kids. No character at all.

    • @ertooo4324
      @ertooo4324 Před rokem +3

      @ Then what’s the point of hosting a tournament? If you want “personality”, go ahead and hang out with the people, not have them fill up spots in a competitive tournament where skill actually matters. Also, claiming that these people don’t have personality for some reason is extremely disrespectful when it’s pretty obvious that they do. I get that you are more attached to the old players in the scene, but there is no reason to be disrespectful to new players who are making the tournament objectively better. Just compare the pinnacle of the 2019 tournament to the average game in 2022, and it’s clear how much the scene has grown.

    •  Před rokem +3

      @@ertooo4324 you can keep believing, just like the Tetris organizers do, that bigger scores mean a growth in the community. Just compare YT views for CTWC between Jonas era, vs today's era, you can include CTM too since they the new kids are there all the time. Trace a graph if bigger scores mean more audience. On the contrary, it's only taking the interest away from the casual viewer (that casual viewer is how your base grows). Bigger scores is not how you grow Tetris, you grow it by making it an enjoyable experience, and that means charisma. One clear as crystal example for you, good sir. James Chen and Chris Tang are far, faaar from the most technical commentators. But people love them. They're the voice of CTWC, you know why? Charisma, they have loads of it. For that 1 single reason, people remain huge fans of their commentary. Regarding scores: these new lads are not more skilled. They use a different method: rolling. Put them all under the same method and THERE you will have a true skill comparometer. DAS vs rolling is never a matter of skills, but just a mechanical imput advantage for rolling. A championship should set them all under the SAME rules, if you wish to compare skill levels. I watch every CTM, I have great interest in Tetris, but I'm pretty sure the Tetris community is in great denial if you think humongous scores is the answer to growth. Bookmark my comment and come back in 5 years. Tetris will still be a tiny niche despite 10 million points WR coming ahead. You're free to bookmark my comment.

    • @succubusfan7206
      @succubusfan7206 Před rokem +2

      @ I heavily agree with this comment, every match is a snoozefest because with rolling, I expect the game to last all the way past 29, maxouts are no longer that exciting, it's just a new era not meant for people who enjoyed the rush of the game ending at 29 and how fast the pace gets. Growth can be a bad thing as well @Ertoo, this really reminds me and It feels the same as when AGDQ went from the small fun rooms to the big corporate hotel rooms, it just feels like it lost the excitement.

    • @ertooo4324
      @ertooo4324 Před rokem +1

      @ My point is that there is no reason the tournament should be limited or held back simply because of “charismatic” players not catching up to new ones (do keep in mind that rolling is not a “innate” skill like hypertapping; it’s not a coincidence that almost every serious competitor in the scene has adequately switched). Perhaps part of the draw of the tournament for 2016 and 2018 was the fact that the game seemed conquerable by casuals. But if/when the scene stays at the same competition level as 2018 or earlier, the prestige of the tournament gets severely diminished. The main point of the tournament is to find out who is the best tetris player, not how to make it the most entertaining (even if that is the second biggest goal). Casual viewers want to see skill on display, not people who misdrop frequently and don’t display that high of a skill level.
      I think the main issues that the tournament has to address right now are game length/line caps. Even as a fan and tetris player, I have to admit that the games can feel too long at times (although I don’t exactly know what other people think). It was not a big issue before due to the number of early topouts, but I think it will be an aspect that can hinder it in the future. I do agree with @Succubus Fan that uncapping the lines is pretty harmful to the game overall, changing it into a marathon instead of battle of efficiency.
      But no matter what, I think it’s way too early to say that CTWC is doomed for not pushing aside “better” players when people don’t even seem to be giving them a chance.
