At the 2022 CTWC, over 100 Classic Tetris pros gathered at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo to vie for 48 seeds. Qualifying consisted of 2 hour attempts where players would try to rack up as many great scores as possible. In a 48-seed bracket, the Top 16 seeds earn a bye out of Round 0, while the bottom 32-seeds compete for a spot in Round 1.

In the 1990 Nintendo World Championship competition, Tetris was the game to beat. The winner, Thor Aackerlund, is still seen by many as the best to have ever played. Today’s Classic Tetris tournaments are played on that same version of Nintendo Tetris, using original NES game systems, controllers, and Tetris cartridges. In 2009, a player named Harry Hong became the first to achieve the highest possible score of 999,999 points. Inspired by this achievement, filmmaker Adam Cornelius produced a short film about Harry called “Max-Out”, and launched a Kickstarter campaign to document the world of competitive Tetris. As word of Adam’s Kickstarter campaign spread, rumors of max-out scores from other Tetris Masters began to surface, threatening the supremacy of Harry’s achievement. With the help of Nintendo World Championship veteran Robin Mihara, Adam searched for all of the Tetris Masters he could find. Jonas Neubauer emerged as an early max-out artist, along with the elusive original champ Thor Aackerlund. The idea of bringing these and other NES Tetris Masters together to compete in a live tournament became an obvious and irresistible proposition which was artfully captured in the 2010 feature length documentary Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters. Under the leadership of producer Vince Clemente, The Classic Tetris World Championship is currently held at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, an annual event which has hosted the tournament since 2012. Chuck Van Pelt and his organizing committee have built the PRGE into the largest classic gaming expo in the country, drawing around 10,000 attendees. Every year the scores get higher. Rivalries are revisited once again, and new players emerge to challenge the old guard. Over 100 players have maxed out the score now. Will you be the next? ecstasyoforder.com thectwc.com - Hry
36:25 Trying to outplay each other even in the handshake
Having the games start offset like this is great so we can pay attention to each as they get to level 19+
I pretty much can't watch a match really until level 19.
Dog is 2 times champion so everyone who plays against him is underdog.
People have been talking shit about post 29 play, but say what you want post 29 is a nail biter to watch, it's so unforgiving and requires a tremendous amount of skill to navigate, definitely not boring. Classic Tetris may not always be innovation but I'm glad they discovered rolling.
I disagree. You don't see what we have missed and just focus on the few exciting moments there may have been in CTWC22. Rewatch the top 8 play offs and see how often the matches were super close up to 29 but pretty much noone cared as it was all depending on post 29 gameplay anyway. Usually these were the most intense moments and they are completely gone now. Watch the DAS finals to see what I mean. Yes, rolling is incredibly difficult and impressive. But once you are used to the fact the people are capable of doing it, there are barely any surprises left and matches are somewhat predictable based on the rolling skill. CTWC22 proved exactly that.
@@Anomaly92 I disagree, I think high speed chasedowns are much more exciting.
you don't get to be sole arbiter on the topic. You don't have to sound quite so contemptuous.
@@accountnamewithheld well think i can articulate my opinion how i want and stick to my wording which sounds actually pretty fair to me. Good for you when you actually enjoy chasedowns line for line. I think it kinda kills the whole vibe
I say we wait until more people are proficient in post-29 plays before judging if it's less nail-biting than DAS. When both sides are good in killscreens, I bet it's intense again
@@dandanthedandan7558 I just dont like the super long chase downs, unless the guy was gunning tetrises to get them... 40 singles to chase down scores is not fun to watch, thats why I like the idea of level cap, cuz people now have to think whether to be aggressive in chasing down or do singles cuz the score is close enough
41:20 - DOG 🐶 is such a great ambassador for the game. Articulate, stoked, and a competitor. You can tell he wants it really bad here headed into the semis. Love this.
Eric's rolling technique is so smooth and relaxed. He seems to get faster inputs with less effort compared to every other player.
Absolutely loving this rolling technique, level 29+ game play is where skill really shines with theses guys.
Dog's chasedown blew my mind. That guy is unbelievable ❤️
Eric's dig at 20:31 was absolutely brilliant.
that was actually super scary, I got bailed by rng a couple times there
imaging maxing out 3/3 times and still getting swept. insane
Allen really punched above his weight.
He has been ABSENT the entire year from the CTMs, comes in, gets into Top 8.
Even Alex T didn't make it into Top 8.
and hes not even rolling
Did you enjoy ctwc alvin?
@@ryanamburgy2791 Yes, I did.
Met a few of the guys. 😎
@@Alvin_Vivian I saw your picture with brodin
@@ryanamburgy2791 Where? 🤔

It was nice
Seed 1-4 in the semis who would’ve thought it 🙃
36:30 blond chick on the left “THAT WAS AMAZING, HOLY CRAP” didn’t realize there are Tetris fan girls go get em Dog
Thank you Jonas for all you did to this wonderful community
Good post-game interviews!! Real questions, interesting answers, and the friendly nature of the interactions illicit genuine feelings from the contenders.
I think you meant elicit :) illicit means illegal but they are homonyms so they sound the same, super easy mistake to make
I predict in the next two or three years... you either learn how to roll or give up all hope in winning these competitions. Guy just did a 95k chase down on level 30. That is pure insanity.
There is still hope for hypertapping! An international player named Moja devised his own form of tapping to be able to punch in additional inputs, and he has achieved a 2.18 million and level 62. Sure it's not on par with rolling, but it's cool to see the few remaining tappers try to innovate alongside rolling. Going forwards though, rolling is definitely here to stay, and hopefully that extra time can allow for much more equal rolling talent across the board.
Meanwhile DAS crying 6 feet under lol
Eric’s progression over the past year has truly been amazing, he’s put in the work and it definitely shows, he’ll be a force to be reckoned with in the next round
Shouts out to whoever panned the boards’ to the left and right appropriately
Hydrants play is so clean it’s so satisfying to watch
Asian guy with a hoodie and one glove.
EVERYONE IN THE ROOM: "This guy can stack."
good to see the boom tetris for Jeff sticker on eric's tv
Take a shot every time they say "this era of rolling".
4:32 Eric has some seriously amazing board management with some bad RNG. Well done man. Well done everyone!
amazing how skilled they are. A true spectacle. Surviving after level 29 is mindboggling.
Would love to see a continuous stream of the entire top8.
40:42 Ric Flair said it best! Wooooooo! 😀
I love CTWC, but why oh why are we watching two matches at once? It makes sense when the field is still huge, but I was surprised we were watching two matches when we hit top 16, let alone top 8. These are the best Tetris players in the world playing in the world championship, these matches deserve more consideration
It more so has to do with time constraints. We didn't have a lot of time to go through top 16 on Sunday so we had to use 4p scene throughout the majority of the tournament
@@ITZsharky1 I get it, but it's still a shame. I just really want to enjoy the drop and placement of every piece at this high level of play, you know?
@@welovemrp00 You can watch the video twice, once for top and once for bottom.
One of the commentators said that the pieces in NES tetris are truly random but they are not. If the next generated piece is the same as the previous one then the random generator generates just one more time the next piece. The generated piece will be final no matter if it is the same as the previous one.
Psuedo random technically but it might as well be random :)
Yeah it’s not quite random, there’s a cap on how many of a piece you can get in a row
@@ITZsharky1 It might be random only if the people who prepared the algorithm to pre-generate the same 1000 pieces for both players for the game, don't know about this and if they used the true randomness. But if the pieces were truly random we would have seen sometimes like 4 or 5 same pieces in a row. This doesn't happen. So I think they know about the NES RNG feature and they have set it up correctly.
@@Plamkata69 Well yeah. Its meant to be as close to the NEStris RNG as possible when generating seeds. There are a few quirks but as I said its psuedo random because you can't really have true randomness... But in a general sense you can refer to it as random
@@ryanamburgy2791 I don't think there is a program cap for same pieces. The repetition is avoided naturally with this algorithm. For instance, in order to see 4 same pieces in a row then there were 3 more same pieces which were rejected by the RNG. That makes the RNG to generate same piece 7 times in a row. The probability this to happen is very low. Or it would be 1 to 7^7. But because we start to count from the second same piece we have to lower it to 1 to 7^6 or 1 to 117,649. I have seen 3 same pieces in a row but 4 is not impossible though.
GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!
Dog at 34:50 on. HOLY CRAP.
Love Hydrant's shirt! :D
GOOD LUCK to ALL 👍LETS GO!!!!!
"He just doesn't top out.". What are you to do when you maxed out every game and still got swept. This is a new breed.

Can anyone tell me what happened with Dog at the beginning of the video? Why did there have to be a restart?
Dog explains it in the post match interview at 41:30
Lol it's Brunny
I hope the CTWC DAS 2022 videos will come after this series. :) 2:00 - I think the judge overruled to restart because the seed was so bad ... there were literally only S and Z in that seed. And Allen looks like a fan of Sidney with the 1 pushdown point on the first piece drop. :)
Seed was ok, Allen's TV was malfunctioning, they said that and called for the servicemen.
@@KryptosatanTemnozor Ah okay, thanks. :)
@@KryptosatanTemnozor Actually it was dogs TV that was acting up
Someone should tell them that the piece sequence aren't truely random. There's very good explenations on that topic.
Good to see you guys are still together
И в финале батл братьев!
Maybe max out the number of lines at 300 and the person with the highest score after 300 is the winner. Still includes a higher skill cap and rewards players for a good early game.
There have been experiments on line caps. In the classic tetris monthly tournament in September there was another speed increase at level 49 that let's everyone topout almost immediately. This month the speed increases at level 39 already.
So the discussion about a line cap is definitely ongoing and there is a possibility there might be some sort of it at next years CTWC.
its so satisfying to watch this game xxd in professionel way
For the algorithm. ✊
I keep trying to come back to watch after Jonas died, but I just can't.

Strange to think this will likely be the last CTWC where a winner is decided by natural gameplay. Once a cap to how many levels can be reached in a game is introduced, Tetris will begin its new era of artificiality. All winners will have an asterisk mark next to their W column because the natural progression of the game was fundamentally altered by the tournament committee due to rolling tactics.
The game also changed when a bunch of kids started no lifing Tetris
How was it altered?
Before 2016, any game that ended in two maxouts (999,999) would be considered a tie, because a max was the highest possible score you could get. There's literally code that sets your score to 999,999 if you go above it, this is a deliberate game design choice.
Should we then remove the 7-digit scoring feature of the CTWC roms (which are artificially modified) so that no more matches with scores past a million are given such asterisks? After all, they were played on a rom that includes unnatural scoring mechanics.
@@fractal161 Nailed it.

Trolls they can’t even control a game..shame
I hate to say it because he seems like a nice guy, but James’ commentary is a little too outdated. When you switch over from Sharky, you realise James’ commentary is just making noise and stating the painfully obvious.
Dislike 👎
The new players are boring. No character in them. Thats why tetris has gone down hill in recent years
lol k
id rek everyone of these guys with a power glove
I wish I was cool enough to wear a glove while playing Nintendo 😭
