Koryan (1) vs. Zzyzx (Quaid) (9)
Harry Hong (4) vs. Joseph Saelee (5)
Amazing matches in this year's top 8! With commentary by James Chen and Chris Tang.
In the 1990 Nintendo World Championship competition, Tetris was the game to beat. The winner, Thor Aackerlund, is still seen by many as the best to have ever played. Today’s Classic Tetris tournaments are played on that same version of Nintendo Tetris, using original NES game systems, controllers, and Tetris cartridges. In 2009, a player named Harry Hong became the first to achieve the highest possible score of 999,999 points. Inspired by this achievement, filmmaker Adam Cornelius produced a short film about Harry called “Max-Out”, and launched a Kickstarter campaign to document the world of competitive Tetris. As word of Adam’s Kickstarter campaign spread, rumors of max-out scores from other Tetris Masters began to surface, threatening the supremacy of Harry’s achievement. With the help of Nintendo World Championship veteran Robin Mihara, Adam searched for all of the Tetris Masters he could find. Jonas Neubauer emerged as an early max-out artist, along with the elusive original champ Thor Aackerlund. The idea of bringing these and other NES Tetris Masters together to compete in a live tournament became an obvious and irresistible proposition which was artfully captured in the 2010 feature length documentary Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters. Under the leadership of producer Vince Clemente, The Classic Tetris World Championship is currently held at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, an annual event which has hosted the tournament since 2012. Chuck Van Pelt and his organizing committee have built the PRGE into the largest classic gaming expo in the country, drawing around 9000 attendees. Every year the scores get higher. Rivalries are revisited once again, and new players emerge to challenge the old guard. Over 30 players have maxed out the score now. Will you be the next? ecstasyoforder.com thectwc.com - Hry
4:39 Jonas is so good, he gets tetrises from off the stage!!
more tetris than you can handle
only Jeff can out- BOOM- tetris Jonas
Jonas is so good he tetris 3 times before brushing his teeth
wrr
accountnamewithheld Jonas can get a Tetris 5 times before you can say BOOM TETRIS FOR JEFF
4:40 Jonas is so good that he gets a tetris without playing
Wow seeing Koryan vs zzyzx made me want to see Kauser vs Hauser. I hope they'll both be here next year
sorry to be so off topic but does any of you know a tool to log back into an instagram account?
I somehow forgot my password. I would love any help you can give me!
It’s it such a great coincidence that both of you made your channels within 1 day of each other
man Quaid really made an impressive come back in his last game. He may have lost but it's just a perfect example what these top tier players are capable of. He really got into The Zone.
that guy that started this tournament is a genius this is gonna explode in the coming years holy shit cant wait to see what happens
wrr, no such hting as geniux or not
@@zes7215 You are on every video saying nearly the same thing. Lol
Textbook example of identifying a need and meeting it.
i have never been a fan of watching "sports" whatsoever. but this, man, now i finally know how football/baseball/soccer fans feel when watching matches. really glad i discovered this. its so exciting.
My thoughts exactly! :D
LOL Koryan was like "nah translator-san sucks imma just speaku Engrish"
I know!! The translator did a bad job at getting the question out.... It was funny how Koryan just switched to English lol
AHAHAHAHAHA so funny
I've been studying japanese for years, and neither did I know 予選 (yosen) meant qualifiers. Btw the translator for the second answer he said "It seems you somehow do understand (english), go on", that's why he switched.
Time stamp pls
Situation @ 25:27 cracked me up too :)
18:22 😂😂 - Chris Tang is such a legend!
Announcer: How did you feel going against Harry Hong next to you?
Joseph: Uh.. yeah I dunno what.. uh.. yeah I was nervous yeah I dunno.
Announcer: Let's talk about that second game, what happened there?
Joseph: Uh.. yeah I dunno what.. uh.. I played it safe uhh yeah I dunno..
Announcer: Tell us what you're expecting out of this.
Joseph: Uh.. yeah I dunno what to expect.. yeah uh.. i dunnoo
Announcer: Why are you here?
Joseph: uh... I dunno... just i dunno uhhhh I dunno
Announcer: what are you going to do when you win?
Joseph: Uh...... Idk... Imma cryyyyyyyyyyy idk
LOLLLLLLLLLLLL oh my god bro that killed me 🤣🤣😂
Koryan is just so endearing and nice. I just want to be his friend.
He's like a panda
Me too
Chris Tang is one of my favorite commentators ever, for anything.
18:22 best moment of the match!!!
no suhc thing as favx or not, commenx any nmw is perfx
he should be a pro sports commentator, if just e-sports.
Quaid comes top 8 looking like he had an absolute banger the night before.
I think Jonas mentioned in one of his streams that they actually had a big party with most of the players the night before..
I believe he uploaded that part to his CZcams channel..
I think Quaid at one point said he actually plays better hung over lmao.
Game 2 of Koryan vs Quaid was Incredible. Quaid was beasting it.
Quaid’s well-building strategy is very effective in match play, but he burns more lines than he needs to, and it spells trouble against opponents like Koryan who can maintain a fast pace.
Greentea was also having success with unconventional wells, but he could do it more efficiently.
wrr, do anyx nmw is perfx, no better or worse wl
@@fishflake1209 jonas talked about the games here. He was pointing out some of quaid's non ideal placements.
great work getting the closeup shots of Joseph and Koryan hypertapping. One of the downsides of limiting the in-game sounds, is you don't get to hear how unnatural the side-to-side movement sounds when hypertapping is utilized.
Pretty neat seeing James Chen in the commentary boothe for a pro level tournament outside of Street fighter.
I really like his passion for esports and high level competition. He really understands what high level gaming means to these competitors.
Man I waited so long for this... Epic game from Quaid man
The Harry vs Joseph match was absolutely ridiculous. Both got early top outs
Yup. I feel Top 8 matches should be best of 5, not best of 3.
wrr, do anyx nmw is ok
@@Alvin_Vivian Joseph is just better lmao. First game Joseph won fair N square. 2nd game Joseph loses to make score fair in a 1-1. Then Harry does the same to be fair too.
@@salumtummundi9462 wow epic troll
Absolutely! In sports such as pool or snooker you routinely get matches played best of 9, 11 or 13 with finals being best of 17 or 19. Something like that would allow really for consistent players to thrive. It's not like these games take very long anyway! Joseph v Harry was only about 18 mins for 3 games. I'd also gladly allow players to continue playing past lvl 28 - not like the game would last much longer anyway because of introducing that rule.
I dreamed about tetris for hours last night, been watching too much of this lol its so addicting
They all played really well, but I'm always impressed by Quaid's inventive play at the higher levels. Seriously though, I want Harry to win it again.
I love how every year this event gets bigger and bigger and better and better quality. Keep up the great work guys, I really love this tournament and look forward to watching it each year!
6:44 Tetris for Joseph. Woof woof woof woof
One of our fans in the front row really gets into it =)
20:30 Quaid’s hecklers are the best hahaha
One of the best tetris rounds I've seen, amazing games! Can't wait for Koryan vs Joseph.
6:45 Joseph looks right at you
I've been waiting for this for like 8 years
Wow. These quarter final matches were intense.
I love those guys commentating. Very very enjoyable.
Just realized I've been on the pooper for 23 minutes.
They need to do best of 5’s in the quarterfinals and up at least. Maybe even best of 7. I just think harry and Joseph made some bad mistakes and didn’t have enough games to make it a good match. 1 or 2 extra games would give them a better chance to settle into a match and find their game
Yes, plus only do 1 game at a time. Would be awesome. This is still great though.
There's too many time constraints, both for player, commentator and referee exhaustion (eg Jonas after top 4. My guy was about to pass out) as well as the stage time for the retro game connection. It's just not really a possibility as things are.
Agreed. There is way too much variance in the game for a best of 3 to be acceptable. It's an insult to the amount of time these guys have practiced for this.
A double elimination bracket would be even better but there's just not enough time
Haha butthurt fan. Harry lost to the grand winner to more talking
Asians vs asians with asian mentors playin` russian game in english
In America with primarily Japanese hardware.
This is great entertainment, hope you can go bigger in 2019 and beyond - would love to see a third place trophy and a bigger prize pool. The sponsors need to step up their sponsorships!
we need more classic tetris tournaments!
That improvisational play by zzyzx at the higher was so intersting
Finally!! Why did it take so long? :(
to squeeze every view out of the first videos.
they "stream" new parts once a week to incorporate a live chat where some of the players etc often pop in for a bit as well.
no such thing as long or not or sx about it, happx nmw
nooo harryyy
Love this keep it up!
When they brought in the translator for Koryan it reminded me of reverse version of the MadTV sketch with the Uh-oh Hot Dog! guy...
Boom! Tetris for Jeff!
fantastic play by Joseph in that first game
i had to watch it twice for top and bottom matches
rookie, i watched it 4 times for top right top left bottom right bottom left
God damn I love watching quaid play
holy hell this is the best tetris has ever been
Joseph’s play style is insane
Nice video!
harry vs joseph, I did not expect that outcome!
Those last two Joseph/Harry games were heartbreaking!
Quaid just said screw it and went for everything that last match, that man is insane and holy crap did he go for it
Joseph's transition on the first game is out of the world
4:40 -- BOOM! Tetris for Jonas! 😂😂😰😰 (Wait a minute...Joseph Saelee =/= Jonas Neubauer!!!! Get their names right!!!! 😂😂)
The video concludes @ 26:53.
Johnathan Patrick boom Tetris for Jeff
GamerGee Well, Jonas kinda avenged Jeff's defeat to Svavar. 😊😊
4:40 boom Tetris for Jonas. Lmao
The DAS player is at a slight disadvantage.
Wtf does DAS stand for
@@ericmsandoval DAS stands for delayed auto shift, or when you hold down the D pad to the side and after a delay the piece starts automatically moving to the side
Tldr; it's the alternative to hyper tapping
@@ericmsandoval hyper tapping is rapid spamming the left/right keys to maneuver but das is holding the d- pad all the time for extra control
Jeff forever - the one ultimate tetris master
10:40 Tetris for Joseph. Woof woof.
James is everywhere.
Seriously CTWC Age Immortal Cmon
Boom, Koryan ga Teturisu!
"He came from behind!"
Boom Tetris for zzyzx has to be one of the funniest sentences on earth
Why did this take so long? I know who wins now :(
Look how impressive quaid is 0.0
"Yeah, I don't know..." -Joseph Saelee, 2018
I didn’t know James Chen was into NES Tetris and commentates on it. I thought he was solely FGC,street fighter specifically.
Do these commentators get a cash bonus every time they say neck and neck?
3:17 light pants and black zipper hoodies.
im sure all three have white shoes as well, it's like a uniform
yay Joseph is still in
Amazing come back that first game. I like he glanced at the camera once too!
He won the whole thing 0:)
Not gonna lie, although there are other players who are better than him, Quaid's play style is by far the most fun to watch, and the most interesting and creative. Hope he can become more consistent and actually have a shot at the title because I love his style on an aesthetic level.
Why are you spoilering us with tht thumbnails?
17:14 back to backs...
Is this Tetris friends / PPT?
*back to back t spin triple!*
I see you Harry with those AirPods!
Drinking game: Every time you hear the Tetris sound effect plays, you take a sip.
4:40 I didn’t know Jonas was playing in this match😂😂
Joseph is awsome!
That roar at 20:33!
Almost all chalk...1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9. Just the strength of the field this year...
We need video of the dog. I want a boom Tetris for Joseph woof woof woof woof
How could I download THIS version of Tetris where I can start off on level 18?
Press a +start
I'm age 13 where do I qualify? Sorry im new to this.
So I have noticed this in all of the nes Tetris the videos were they show 4 people all have different pieces but then they show 2 at a time they have the same RNG can anyone explain that please
In 2016, CTWC started using modified cartridges that allow players to have the same piece sets.
Harry didn’t make it to top 4 AGAIN?!!?”:?
D.A.CubingGamer When he dropped a game to Terry I knew he was done. But I didn't think it was going to be Joseph who knocked him out short of the semifinals.
How do you start with lvl 18 like the pros I can start only up to lvl 9 on Classic Tetris is it a different version or is it a cheat or hack?
You have to hold the A button down on your controller, and then start if you're hovering over level 8. Though I've tried to do it...it's not easy...it's not easy at all.
22:26 OMG the OLD TVs
Hypertyping is overrated. Joseph has way faster reaction speed than other players, and that's why he won the championship.
did everyone notice they're chlothing is almost the same
sorry if i have wrong spelling
boom. tetris for joseph
How do they get the same pieces? Sorry if it's a noob question, I just don't know.
Some very clever technical work by the organizers
I think they explain it a bit in the garage showdown uploaded a few weeks ago.
But basically Trey is just really good with technical stuff?
They're playing split screen, both players get the same pieces at the same speed, 1st slight variation changes everything, and best player wins, usually. Not sure if these other guys are trolling you with their answers or if they're stupid.
@@Clusters3rdStrikeArc they're playing on different TVs. That's how Alex and Jeff got sleep gated but svavvar and Sean Ritchie didn't
as a newcommer i don'T know to much but with koryan and green tea comming to the western scene , harry and jonas must feel a little scared =D
Koryan is cute when he smile
how long until Disney puts out the Video Game Network?
Hope do they get the rng to be the same
Creo que lastimosamente para Quaid y harry no volverán a ver una final mientras se presenten koryan y Joseph, Jonas y Green tee
Is there any competitive game James Chen can't bring the hype to?
My name is -BOOM tetris for- Jeff
Boom Koryan ga teturisu
daddy is back ladies, booooommm
2:22 bird flipping set up
1:14 Remember when Hauser got eliminated, and he pulled out his hair in rage, and threw his glasses into the crowd?????? People might call him a bad loser, but I think it's good to have such passionate players representing the game.
Quaid is so hungover omg
Koryan - real champ!
THE CYBORG, ZZYZX VS. THE SUPERHERO, KAUSER WAS QUITE A WIDELY AWAITED GRUDGE MATCH!!!!!1
Who are the announcers I'm new to watching and they never introduce themselves.
