From the 2017 Classic Tetris World Championship, the Final Match between Jonas Neubauer (3) and Alex Kerr (17)!
With full commentary by Chris Tang and James Chen, these matches are some real gems for all you Tetris fans out there!
In the 1990 Nintendo World Championship competition, Tetris was the game to beat. The winner, Thor Aackerlund, is still seen by many as the best to have ever played. Today’s Classic Tetris tournaments are played on that same version of Nintendo Tetris, using original NES game systems, controllers, and Tetris cartridges. In 2009, a player named Harry Hong became the first to achieve the highest possible score of 999,999 points. Inspired by this achievement, filmmaker Adam Cornelius produced a short film about Harry called “Max-Out”, and launched a Kickstarter campaign to document the world of competitive Tetris. As word of Adam’s Kickstarter campaign spread, rumors of max-out scores from other Tetris Masters began to surface, threatening the supremacy of Harry’s achievement. With the help of Nintendo World Championship veteran Robin Mihara, Adam searched for all of the Tetris Masters he could find. Jonas Neubauer emerged as an early max-out artist, along with the elusive original champ Thor Aackerlund. The idea of bringing these and other NES Tetris Masters together to compete in a live tournament became an obvious and irresistible proposition which was artfully captured in the 2010 feature length documentary Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters. Under the leadership of producer Vince Clemente, The Classic Tetris World Championship is currently held at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, an annual event which has hosted the tournament since 2012. Chuck Van Pelt and his organizing committee have built the PRGE into the largest classic gaming expo in the country, drawing around 6,000 attendees. Every year the scores get higher. Rivalries are revisited once again, and new players emerge to challenge the old guard. Over 20 players have maxed out the score now. Will you be the next?

Credit where credit is due to Alex though man, for like 80% of that match he dominated. Even when Jonas came back he still held on for a bit. Kid can play some good tetris

It's because other players aren't as consistent. Jonas is consistent almost all the way to the kill screen but other players when it gets faster, they feel the pressure while Jonas is still playing consistent and pounding tetris after tetris on the higher speeds

Round 1 comeback was legendary. Jonas just brute forced has way into the lead at the end. That deficit was not easy to overcome
Round 2 I don’t even know how Jonas lasted long enough in that mess at the end there.
In both of these rounds, most lesser players would have faltered much earlier.
Jonas is like some machine. Just crazy at what he can do.
Bummed Alex went out like that, but damn, Jonas is GOD. The first two games were incredible. Jonas in Game 1 at the transition was unreal.

Coming back to watch this after hearing the sad news. I remember watching these lives. So damn hype. Jonas got me back into playing classic NES Tetris. Rip Tetris King. Jonas will deft be miss. Watching him play got me so hyped to play NES Tetris. Deft motivated me to set up my nes and play classic Tetris on my CRT TV. Truly sadden by his passing.

Man, Alex had two amazing first games...Jonas is just too good though. And it that third game, it looks like he was mentally expecting the T piece to burn a line at 29:57 but it didn't because of that hole and that screwed up his flow.
aSongScout Alex was playing a little too aggressive, but after putting up two 700k+ games and still losing, you can't really blame him

I think it is rare that pros wouldn't remember all of the holes on their board especially during such an important game. In this case, he didn't forget about the hole, he was trying to fix it. If he had rotated that T piece counter-clockwise instead of clockwise and placed it all the way to the right, he would have only done a single line clear and would still have a open well for a tetris if it wasn't for the hole blocking it. He could still fix it, but he would be too dependent on a S piece. He instead fixed it by covering his well to make room for a Z/T piece so that he could clear up the line above the hole to fix it. Even if he didn't get the Z/T piece he could place an L piece and hopefully fix it later.

Its crazy to watch this knowing in just a year the meta would change so drastically Jonas will struggle to compete and max outs become so common its almost required to enter competitions

It's like Jonas' power level is at 100 and he has this intimidation factor that lowers his opponents' HP by 30 at the beginning of each match.
