- Argentina and Lionel Messi are now World Champions, defeating a resurgent France side.
When the game went to extra time at 2-2 you knew that there was still a goal or two to go, and it was always going to be a 50/50 split between PSG teammates Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe.
When Messi scored his second of the game, we thought it was all over.
But in true Mbappe fashion, he was having none of it and became the second ever hat-trick hero in a World Cup Final at just 23-years-old - a real sign of what is to come in his career.
Ultimately though, the script went to plan, with Argentina and Lionel Messi prevailing in what makes for a phenomenal World Cup bow for the Footballing Great.

For years there is no more debate about whether he is the GOAT. Period. Messi in the WC only confirmed once again (after hundreds of times) that he is sensational and the discussions or dummy comparisons with Maradona or Mbappes do not make sense. Football is not an individual game like Tennis, therefore who wins or not is a team; said that the merit in Qatar (or previously in Brazil for America Cup) belongs to Leonel SCALONI because he was capable to build a team with the best weapon any Coach like to have like Leonel Messi. In South Africa in 2010, maybe Argentina had a better squad and Messi at his best momentum but the coach (Diego Maradona) demonstrated not to be efficient with the resources he had. In 2014, Messi was amazing again but unfortunately, one lucky shot of Goetze changed the story. In Russia, Sampaoli made the worst management that a national squad could suffer with someone with no clue how to utilize top stars. Your analysis of this match (congrats) is very accurate in my opinion because Scaloni's strategy runs exactly as planned. Once again a small failure (Otamendi) trying to manage the ball with a "shark" behind him (Mbappe) was a fatal mistake; at this moment only in 9 minutes, the match could finish with the score 2:0 in the first 90 minutes. This is the beauty of football as well, how the direction of a game can change dramatically. The final intervention of Dibu Martinez in min 119 against Kolo Muani was crucial for converting Argentina into the new World Champion. Thanks for sharing your analysis.
