The world cup ended the only way it could, with one of the most exciting games of football the world has ever witnessed. Argentina completely dominated the game for 75 minutes thanks mostly to lionel messi and angel di maria. However thanks to clever substitutions by Dechamps and the individual brilliance of Mbappe, France miraculously found their way back in less than 2 minutes, taking the game into extra time. Another goal by messi and a hattrick from mbappe took the game to penalties,With Montiel and Martinez allowed messi to finally complete his trophy cabinet and bringing the world cup back to Argentina after 36 years. So what were the tactics that allowed Argentina to dominate the game, and how did France find their way back, let’s take a look.

Scaloni biggest mistake was not making fast subdues as soon as he saw his midfielders were running out of gas.
By the time Scaloni subdued Di Maria for Acuña, France had made already FIVE sustitutions, which is frikin insane.
Argentina had to face, literally, a new team in the second half, fresh out of the bench, with more stamina.
If anything, the fact that Argentina kept France at bay for so long with the same 11 starters speaks words about how superior argentinian team was.

  • @TheOutlierToday
    @TheOutlierToday Před rokem +160

I think scaloni took too long to make subs and the midfield was exhausted and were overrun. Maybe if he had refreshed that area earlier argentina would've dominated the entire game. The first half performance was one of the best I've seen by argentina.

I was screaming as hell already at the 60' minute when I saw Deschamp benching four players while Argentina's midfield was running out of gas.
As a matter of fact, France subdued 7 PLAYERS already by the time Scaloni got his second sub on the field, which is insane. Argentina literally faced half a team coming from the bench fresh and with new stamina the whole second half.
If anything, it just shows how much superior argentinian team was tho, not only technically and strategically, but physically too. Keeping pressure at high levels for so long, with the same starters, against a whole new squad... You gotta be on point for something like that.

Very good. But strange how these analysis never mention penalty shootout and the tactics behind it. That, ultimately, decided the QF and also the final. Do people really think it's all about luck?
Gonzalo Montiel has shot a lot of penalties for River Plate. Has never missed. Leandro Paredes has now shot 9 penalties. Never missed. Paulo Dybala has shot 27 penalties and scored 23 of them. He's among the top 10 penalty takers in the world (even statistically). Those guys have been under pressure in similar situations many times. And even under extreme pressure they can take REASONABLE penalty kicks. All ARG guys were regular penalty takers. Was it a coincidence that Paredes, Dybala and Montiel were all brought in the end? Nope. The 5th taker was most likely Lautaro, who is ALSO a regular penalty taker. Penalty tally was obviously an important aspect of how this Scaloni's team was originally constructed together. At least it was a thing that was thought out carefully.
What France had? They walked young, inexperienced guys to the gallows. In the biggest event in the world. Guys that haven't shot penalties before. You saw it from their face that they were scared shitless. Giroud is a good taker, Griezmann not so good but at least those guys have tons of experience. They were already substituted so it wasn't the fault of the coach. But they didn't have any penalty takers in the pitch left.
There was a HUGE advantage for Argentina and on top of that Emiliano Martinez who is a known penalty shootout goalie.
Beats me why then PEN shootouts aren't usually analyzed at all, although it was THE deciding factor of the whole tournament.
PS: Here's a link of Montiel scoring penalties for River. czcams.com/video/-itovwpxmVs/video.html

The moment the game went to penalties shotouts we all internally knew it was over for France.
I mean, aside from the fact that Argentina had better kickers. France subdued it's starters in exchange for fresh players -but inexperienced- to imprint more stamina, which paid off in the short term with a tired argentinian team, but brought french game down as soon as Argentina subdued their players who were running out of gas.
Then... The goalkeeper. If Martinez is good at something (almost TOO good) is at penalties.
But the most important fact is... Argentina is the squad who has won most shoutout stages. Which is not a coincidence.

Scaloni was excellent throughout the tournament, especially with the decision to start Di Maria (on the left as well) and take an aggressive approach from the beginning of the match vs. France. But I thought Di Maria was subbed off a bit too early, and really wasn't sure why he brought Acuna in when Tagliafico was already on? A 5-3-2 with 15-20 minutes to go with Lisandro Martinez as the additional CB would have seen the match out, or a 4-4-2 with Paredes solidifying the midfield would have worked as well. Overall, really enjoyed watching the flexibility of Scaloni's systems throughout the tournament in response to the different type of oppositions. I did think it became a bit chaotic after substitutions or maybe the pressure got to Argentina toward the end of matches (especially vs. Australia, Netherlands and France). Anyway, congratulations to Scaloni and Argentina for being crowned world champions, and of course, Lionel Messi for cementing himself as the greatest of all time!

but to be honest, we were lacking in the midfield because they were both exhausted. deschamps made decisive subs for sure, but at the same time he simply ignored the core problem which led to not only di maria and lautaro rekting us but tchouameni missing his penalty too,.
all in all, i predicted that we would be clapped but it's still a shame after mbappe's performance and knowing that we could have done so much better if deschamps actually rotated our key players beforehands AND didn't sacrifice players along the way (like dembele, coman did well multiple times as a solo winger why not put him at the start ? why completely overlook players that have experience like the marseille midfield duo, pavard who got relegated to a third option as rightback, turning griezman into a defensive midfielder when he was our top scorer in the 2016 euro just to sub him in this final ? so many questions ...)

This has been misrepresented so many times to make Mbappe look evil, when in reality all he said was that football tactics on a team level are not as good as Europe. He's fully aware of the unmatched individual talent that South America has, but he knows that those players always come to Europe to learn higher-level football. He also knows that Europe has exponentially more money invested into the sport as well.

I believe that Argentina won this final mainly because of the astonishing skills of its goalkeeper. He was the man of the match. The one on which the whole Argentina success was built on. Because if he wasn't that good, the game wouldn't have been taken to the penalties and Mbappe and his team mates would have brought the trophy back to France.
Another point is the tactical ability of the Argentina's forwards. It was very easy for them to overwhelm the bleus defense, but individual skills of the defenders were enough to abort most of the dangerous opportunities they created. Nonetheless it was one of the key weaknesses of France in this final. Overall it was a very entertaining and intense final indeed, everybody fought like lions till the last minutes.

You’d have an argument if ARG didn’t score more goals than just penalties BUT you don’t.

Well his second pen was from someone hand balling a shot that’s very likely to score. Martinez has his vision completely blocked by the defenders and the shot was on target and to the top right corner. It would take a blind and fully committed high jump to even touch the ball.

@@footwithuke Oh of course, please enlighten us where those pens were. If you need 4 pens to win the game, you probably didn't deserve it considering you got dominated for 75 minutes and couldn't get a shot on target. Stop crying.

Its easier when Fifa is on your side, refs let alot of calls go in favor of Argentina . Never forget this cup was rigged.
