Awesome video, man. You got a heck of a nice result! And those Battle Horse Knives are pretty great, too. I've been carrying a custom workhorse from them, for the better part of a decade. I've done everything with it, from dressing game and digging arrows out of trees, to getting rid of a spot my better half missed while shaving her legs. haha It never lets me down. 👍👍
You use the alcohol to clean to blade real well and remove any oils that could affect the patina. For the actual patina process, you just do straight mustard right out of the bottle. Let it sit for a good 15 minutes or so, and then wipe it off. Usually the mustard has dried some at this point, so you may need to run it under water or you can use the alcohol to clean the blade off. Make sure you dry it really well after this. I recommend applying some mineral oil to the blade after you’re finished. Edit to add: The mustard is useful if you want to apply a patterned patina. If you want a uniform patina, you can simply put some vinegar in a coffee mug or something deep enough so that the blade is fully submerged. Let it sit for the same amount of time.
I've seen many a "byegh" individual positively f*ck up their blades with a squirt bottle before, but I might actually try this? I also have Ferric to do a dipping acid wash (I'm not certain because I don't know anyone that has stonewashing media 😅) and I'm tempted to just try this equivalent of a "knife blade henna tattoo" on my tiny project knife rn
The way he said mustard 😂🤣

Thanks ! I was really pleased with this one. Battle horse makes very high quality knives at an affordable price !
Yes thank you
Wtf am i putting in my chili dogs
Acetic acid AKA Vinegar
Acids that are actually good for your body. Especially when having muscle cramps.
Damustard
That’s looks great 👍😁
Thanks !
beautiful knife
You can do this with white vinegar too. The reason that mustard works is because it has vinegar in it.
Yes vinegar works well, but the mustard is great for applying a pattern. If I’m going for a solid / uniform patina, I use normal vinegar.
do you just put straight mustard on the blade or is there alcohol mixed with the mustard?

the best patina design ive seen
Glad you liked how the Patina turned out! Thanks for watching !
If it takes longer to soak, is that possible?
Soaking for 15 minutes and 30 minutes will have a different effect?
@@MR.JAONAIthe lines may be darker, but it depends on the steel
Does it scratch away fairly easy? Or is it on there good
The patina is very durable. The only way it will come off is if you’re trying to remove it on purpose (I.e. polishing compound, abrasives, etc)
Who makes the blade?
This is a Battle Horse Knives model Bronco 2
What knife is this?
Battle Horse Bronco 2
Does it wipe away easily?
The mustard does, the patina does not :)
Would this work on D2? Its like half high carbon half stainless lol
It should, yes. I’ve also done this method on CruWear with good results !
Boiling in hot vinegar
Yes that works well for a nice even coat. The mustard is great for applying a pattern. Give it a try sometime!
@@Averitt13I'm thinking about doing mustard first then vinegar to cover the rest.
@@alexzbarazky3038 that’s a great idea. Hope it turns out well !
wipe the blade off with water?...or more alcohol?...
You can do it either way, but I would use rubbing alcohol.
@@Averitt13I would stick to just alcohol. Or both, but final is alcohol
Vinegar?
Vinegar will work, but you won’t be able to apply a pattern. Vinegar works well for a solid patina.
Will this work on D2 steel?
It should, but the pattern may not be as dark. Different steals respond differently to this method.

@@Lemon_Sage9999dude, just grab stones and put them in a Gatorade bottle with your knife and gently tumble it!
@@NiqHowie yeah lemme just go get a ton of identically sized pebbles, huh? Stonewashing media is like a coarse powder, not usually blocks of ceramic
Does it hold up under use.?
