Btw for people in areas where clear ammonia is hard to get, I did a shipwreck patina with cloudy ammonia and I was worried it wouldn’t work but it absolutely works fine
Ohh my goofy fucking laws
someone explain to me why you can get cloudy ammonia but can't get clear version?
@mr.frandy7692 you can't make drugs with cloudy/scented copper
So one thing that is very helpful to understand, is that ammonia is not a liquid, but a gas. The stuff you buy is actually ammonia dissolved in water.
When you create the ammonia chamber, you actually don't want the tissue or liquid touching the copper. The ammonia will convert to gas, and the parts of the copper in the *air* will patina.
The parts in contact with the liquid will also patina, but the liquid will then pull that patina into solution and back off of the copper.
You can experiment with pooling various liquids on the copper as they will effect the end patina (salt, vinegar, water) but the ammonia gas is what you really want. And I *think* that whatever liquid you do spray on, you're wanting it to have evaporated by the end, therefore re-depositing any patina that was lifted into solution.
The scrumpled tissue has in fact actually worked for you in creating a pattern! But it's responsible for the bare patches, not the blue
Thank you for this information!
What method would you use to have the salt stick to the copper. You would sit the knife scales above the ammonia and sprinkle the salt, but I'm thinking of doing a pen. I could put the pen parts on sticks to get even exposure to the ammonia gas as it evaporates, but I need to have the salt stick to the pen. Wondering if I should spray a little ammonia on the pen parts then sprinkled with salt so it sticks to the pen, then put them on sticks for the ammonia vapor bath.
I was researching doing this a couple weeks ago, great timing because this method looks a little more simple brother. Thanks 👊
Yes! those turned out absolutely stunning!!!
Gorgeous results, Jerad!
Awesome job! I love the shipwrecked look! Great video!
Absolutely stunning!
Love the copper scales
WOW! they look amazing, good job!
Those came out great!
Those really turned out great.
I really like the looks! I'm a fan of distressed looks in all media, come to think of it. Thanks for sharing again. Even though I've seen you do this twice, I'm down for the next one.
Great stuff thanks for sharing, really like way it turned out, especially the pry bar piece.
Good job ! 👍 best I ever seen. Super aesthetic . I think the flashlight looks great as is .
Love the look.
Dang they turned out so nice! Great job! I need to do this!
Looks real good!
The coin part reaction made me sad and laugh, great video and I appreciate you showing us your process
Great video, Jerad! Perfect how to!
I really like how the coin looks after patina!!
Yeah like crap 😆 🤣
Great video, thanks for the information! 👍
Very nice bro! I do the same thing at home. The 1st time I used your instructional video, and came out perfect. Thanks bro
Nice!
Awesome video
I've been thinking about doing something for one of my copper CJRB knives, even went back to check out your last video with the Deviant just this morning 😂 Awesome stuff!
Awesome tutorial, everything came out looking awesome the scales of the knife are definatly my favorite of the bunch such beautiful colors in it. The great thing about working with copper is the patina is really easy to remove and do over if your not satisfied with it. Thanks for the great vid Jerad and keep making sharp things fun and enjoyable.
Is there some special way to remove the patina if u chose to start over? I’d like to do this to one of my knives but I wanna know how to clean it off if I screw it up somehow.
@@EDCsteals just using a buffing wheel on a dremmel with a bit of compound will take the patina right off as it's just on the surface. You can also just use a rag with some buffing compound on it just takes a bit of elbow grease. You can use Flitz or even stropping compound will get the job done. Heard of people using whitening toothpaste also but I've never tried it. Best of luck.
@@toddcarr. awesome thanks for taking the time to respond
@@EDCsteals 👍👍👍👍👍
Really cool video, bro. I think I might try this.
Thanks for the vid, this actually inspired me to go out and get a bunch of cheap copper/brass fittings to try this on
heyy, how did this turn on brass compared to coper please?
Thank you sir!
Also heat will accelerate the corrosion. Just leaving that bucket in a sunny window sill will work it in faster and deeper.
This is a method that will work on the light switch covers I wanted to make.
Though I'm not in to copper scales or copper trim, you did an awesome job on those items. I wouldn't mind sporting those at all. Thanx for the video my Bladed Brother 👍 ⚔️ ✝️ 🇺🇲
If I can ever find the time and motorbotion I'm going to do this with my cjrb crag and rampart in coppers. I think instead of clearing them out the gate I'm going to carry them a couple weeks post shipwreck and then clear so they have the force patina and then a set of tracks from my use. In my mind it will lend an heirloom aesthetic...
Nice job.
😍. Wow made that look easy🤔. Copper knife and flashlight purchase excuse. 👍.
This was awesome. I'm going to try this forced patina with one of my copper knives this weekend looks amazing. Very very good job bro Respect 👌 👍💯🤯🔥
And then the clear coat scratches and it all looks like garbage because you actually use it. 😆
@skipads8784 if it's a "user" then I'd bring it somewhere and have them put a clear cerakote on it. Kind of takes some of the DIY out of it (unless you happen to dabble in cerakote application) but will keep it looking good.
I love to force patina my copper knives, I actually just finished my own little project making copper lanyard beads, turn out incredible! Great video Pappa J!
Good idea to do this with copper lanyard beads. I will have to try that.
I'm trying to do the same thing, where did you get the copper beads?
@@cadestevens5721 I made them out of copper piping and just cut them to whatever size I wanted
I have the knife on this video but what other company's sell copper knives?
Actually keeping the clip as is works. Damn that looks great.
Hey man, thanks for the info am now debating whether to do scales from a L. L. Bean I got for Christmas last year.
Dude that's way freaking cool.. 🤙🏻✌🏻
That’s exactly the knife I wanted to do this too as well! Awesome video. They turned out fantastic.
Yeah it's a good one to use
The Kershaw leek with CPM154 copper scales is great too and it’s cheaper. I’ve customized a few myself with the copper scales
And will immediately look like crap when it's used and the clear coat is scratched. All hell will break loose with the finish.
You don't simply clear coat everyday wear items. This is turtle liker dumb.
Vary cool video thanks.
Hmmm, I've got some copper scales on my Manix 2 that would probably look pretty cool like this.
Oh wow ❤❤
Thanks Jerad. Love the variety of content because this type of thing is seriously fun to do. Do you know how I could do something cool to all my small parts on my custom 1911 build. Stainless mostly.
Heat coloring small stainless steel parts can be fun, though I recommend practicing first on cheap disposable parts. It is challenging to get reasonably consistent colors past a dark bronze.
Very nice
Cool !!! 👌👌👌
Awesome!! Does the container need to be completely air-tight? Or openend slighty to let air in?
incredible!!! I have two questions: I want to apply this technique to a copper flute, do you think that ammonia can be harmful to health? by applying the varnish over the patina do you guarantee that this appearance will not degrade over time? grateful!
This is absolutely beautiful. You really got me wanting to try this out. Do you think you would get that same reaction from old Beryllium Copper golf clubs?
look's great 👊👍
Looks great👍
Does that work with brass too?
BEAUTIFUL! I will apply this one to my copper weight on my mechanical keyboard!!! Is the other side of your copper patinad also, or just the front view side? thanks!
what would you do if you wanted to keep the copper perfectly shiny with no tarnish at all on it? I have a kershaw copper leek knife I hand engraved and I want to keep the copper shiny, I will definitely do what you show in this video for the next copper engraving I do though
Will doing this affect laser engraving that is already on the scales?
"The coin was not real copper, it came out like crap"🤣 great looking job on the other pieces!
Did the larger coppery/yellow patch on the clip-side scale come directly out from the bath that way…or was that all from the rust eraser? My scales came out ALL blue ‘n black, had to artfully rub out all (brassy) patterns. Came out nice, but took 1/2 hr. more work. Did my scales facing up…wondering if DOWN keeps more yellow metal coloring?
Looks great can we get a vid on how to take the black coating off the Kizer black copper knives?
Yeah I'm wanting to try this with a coated copper Kizer too. Thinking you can just remove the coating with an abrasive of some kind.
Fantastic, I'm about to try that on K390 blade using "Copper Patina 2 Steel Patina" any tips appreciated.
Awesome. At the end did you mean you would flip the scales show side up and put the salt directly on the scales? I have learned so much from you man. Aporeciate it.
Yes i probably would have flipped them face up, then take the paper towels soaked in the chemical with salt and put them on top of the face instead of face down
Can you do this technique with brass as well? I have got a brass Kershaw tumbler, thinking about doing this.
How long did you wait before you pulled em?
I heard urin is the best to petina
does this work with brass?
Ffs Jerad! How did you know I've got a few copper Olights and a set of Daily Customs copper SAK scales, copper pen? I've got brass and titanium set ups too if you've got any inspiration for them too. Great content my man. Keep it coming
I dig the knowledge drop. I just uploaded the boxing of the 1K giveaway I have one on Said Stevie’s channel.
My Refyne EP1 copper pen might have to get this treatment. If you leave it longer, could you get it to go Green?
Put a torch flame to it and watch it magically turn from blue to green
do you use this salt because it does not have iodine, or for another reason?
Poppin
My copper turned black did i do something wrong ?
What happens if you don’t clear coat?
Awesome.....how long did you leave the tub closed for ?
4 to 6 hours
The irony !
“I want mine to be totally natural” 👊😎
Would this work with brass scales as well?
I did my brass Penguin….remove the natural patina and it works. Only thing, my scales came out ALL blue ‘n black, had to artfully erase some to create yellower brassy patterns. Came out well, but took longer to design 👍
What kind of results would I get without polishing the copper? I'm wanting to do this to the Kershaw matrix and I'm wondering how that would work. (For those that don't know the matrix has a rougher finish in the copper)
Natrix*
Guys by the way, POLISH YOUR SCALES VERY VERY WELL. The finish will show up better if they are more polished
Beautiful
How much would someone charge to do this for u, I'm not to good at the paint part thoses scales are sweet I loved them
it depends but id assume around 50$ if they have to polish
Does anyone know if this will work with brass?
Yes
This was a great instructional video. Did you rinse the scales or wipe them off before hitting them with the clear coat? I didn’t see that step covered.
Yes I believe I explained that in detail at the end to make sure you rinse them off before coating
@@NeevesKnives Thanks for the follow up on that step. I appreciate it.
I followed all the steps very precisely. And also am using the exact same knife. But when I went to rinse the scales off, most of the patina and color were easily washed down the drain. I did not scrub at all, just the flow of water took it off. The only difference I can think of, is; I have a different brand of rust eraser. I wouldn’t think that would make a big difference though
@@michaelbacon8096 ….After ammonia/salt, I let mine DRY, before LIGHTLY rinsing with low flow water. Yes, some blue comes off, but enough stays on to look natural. While wet, lightly erase a pattern you want, then let dry again, and clearcoat.
@@roadracerqx893 I was careful to do all those things, maybe just bad luck on the first go… I redid the whole process, and it turned out great. The second time, the clear coat was what took off a lot of the blue, and other colors, but it still looks really good, with lots of blues and whites, a slight bit of blacks, and minimal need for the rust eraser. I preferred the natural patterns of the process, as opposed to sanding portions away
Can I remove a copper patina from a blade?
I'm not sure why copper patina would be on a blade, maybe you just mean patina on your blade and yes you can use different cleaning oils or rust eraser
Some people hang the copper some use papper towels does it make a difference?
No not really just depends on what you have available to use, it's the vapor that does it, with the towels it allows the vapor to not hit certain areas so it stays untouched
@NeevesKnives so if I want a pattern with copper showing naturally form I'm better off with paper towels im guessing? Thanks I recently got a copper flask from Jacob bromwell and copper scales for my benchnade 940 so really looking forward to giving them a patina
You can always spit on your copper to make it patina faster.
Or just fondle it every day.
My big question!
Can this be done with cloudy ammonia because in my country you need a chemical licence to buy clear ammonia?
Yes
In the process of doing this. Just now realizing I have no clue how to clean the scales prior to sealing. How does one do that and make the surface relatively smooth without taking off the corrosion?
Ive seen people talk about sanding it but im not sure with what grit and how that wouldnt take off all the patina
@@ThatGuy-sc5rx turns out, water and a finger takes off 90% of any raised stuff without taking off color. Then you dry it and hit it with 2-3 layers of clear coat. Level sanding makes a huge difference.
Would this work on brass?
Yes, but it's a little different, I don't think it gets the super bright blues
What happened to the coin? Noticed it wasn’t in the finished part of the vid
Got a question, I've always done forced patina on copper or brass, but I'm making a ring out of a bearing casing and I assume it is stainless steel, is there any way to force patina stainless steel? I've used mustard, coarse salt for the desired pattern, and ammonia fumes to make my patina patterns in the past. I've always loved the look and I'm just trying to figure out s way to oxidize the ring. Thanks
How would your hand/fingers smell after handling aged copper?
He put a couple of clear coats to protect the finish
The more patina it is the less usually, the reason copper starts smelling is from your skin oils it makes a reaction so the more patina it is the less scent, if you coat it there's no scent at all
I like the way this looks, i just wish copper wasnt so heavy...and smelly
Do you have to clear coat it?
Yes otherwise it will continue to change or start wearing off
You don't have to but it won't stay the same
Ok thanks seen people complain that if you clear coat it and use the knife a lot the clear wears in spots and looks like crap.
Always liked the ocean wreck type patina on knives and on other stuff. Reason I'll probably never do it, no matter how much I like the results, is that copper is so f-word heavy and impractical. So even if I did do it, it would just be a show piece in my collection never to be taken out of the home. And I live in a country were carrying knives is just plain illegal, so I might rather invest that money in another finepiece of art that I can show to my people.
Dang, your career of adding patina to copper knife scales was doomed from the start, eh?
@@DullPoints I like custom work, laser engraving, acid wash , all that good stuff. Problem I have with copper is that it's too heavy in the pocket and can''t see anybody carrying 100 grams or more into his pocket just to make a show off it. Gotta think practical also man.
@@DullPoints I realised that a 100 grams was a threshold for me and anything more than this I'll start to notice and think about it.
@@pierrelenormand1762 That sounds really cool. I've always wanted to try engraving.
That's a fair point about the weight. Life is too short to keep unpleasant tools
@@DullPoints Then you know what I mean, right ? I know some people who would critisize my concern about weight over practicality but for most people it's not just about confort, it is about carrying a tool you don't know about until you have to use it.
👀👏👏👏
Can I scuff up my micarta scales to give more grip or is micarta sealed with something I can’t tell
Anhydrous ammonia will do this in minutes.
I dont understand why ppl think that this is what patinaised copper looks like i mean if you are honest wouldnt you agree that this is how neglected copper looks like, either way i sort of like the blue/greenish colors that you get from doing it but there is where my likes for copper tools and gadgets ends.
It's called a ship wreck patina ad well, as if it was pulled from the ocean, but all copper patinas its not that it's being neglected in many cases it's what people are waiting for over time is the patina. The oils in your skin make a reaction which patinas copper, also if you look at things that are copper, status etc.. they always turn green. But of course you can clean and dry it constantly to keep it new or clean it in the future to bring it back to new
Jared, fan of your videos but on this particular one why not show the part after you remove the parts from the solution? You seemed to just fast forward to the part where it’s nice and glossy. Would have been helpful to take us through the actual steps rather than skipping over the important parts. I’m trying to follow you but no instructions how to clean and prepare for clear coat etc.
... do you have a pet turtle?
... can we see it?
Just use a clear container lol
I can smell the ammonia from here
Clear coat?
No.
No.
I'm not diluting quality.
