I suspect it has to do with two things: unbelievably strong will to succeed, including brutal work ethic, plus some weird diet thing and physical therapy thing that few of us understand. There is this term "life extension" that refers to stuff like this. I think we're seeing it play out on the football field but most of us don't know about it or how to react to it.
