I bought an 05 Z71 with 197k on it for 8k. Daily driver for 6 years now with 276k, still going strong. I just switched the grappler tires on racing rims back to the black stock rims and wheels. I started loving my truck again and upgraded in other areas after watching your uploads.
I’ve really enjoyed the journey of Tahiti so far. It’s inspired me to do something similar with my 06 suburban. Thank you for everything you do.
My '03 Suburban has a 3" lift with 33's. Dont care about looks, what I like about the lift is the ease of maintenance. No jacks, no ramps, just slide under, drain the fluids, and refill. The Nitto all-terrains are also indestructible, very good for all the construction going on in my area (south TX).
Haha funny i know where specifically you’re talking about 😂 Here in the RGV, horrible roads are like the face of the moon
Haha 3 rgv guys watching this 😂
I totally understand this. I lifted my Tacoma, bigger tire, etc. It looked cool, but rode rough. I recently sold it and bought a Tundra. The Tundra rides really smooth. It’s turned me into an old man as a have no plans to change anything on it. Sometimes simpler is better, and certainly cheaper. 😂
Been watching your series on Tahiti for a while, planning on doing something similar to my Avalanche. Especially interested in the coilover conversion. The roads I have to travel while working are insane. Smoothing out that ride is something pretty important to me, and since Carli doesn’t offer anything for GM products, your solution still seems to be the best option I’ve found. Don’t blame you for changing directions on Tahiti…….it’s YOUR TRUCK! Build it how you want, I’ve enjoyed the videos and will continue to follow your channel.
What year?
2003 Avalanche 1500 North Face edition
@@eddiekuehn755 Nice I have a basic 03 with cladding, have you done the coil over conversion?
No, my work keeps me away from home a lot. The coil over conversion is on my list, just gonna have to wait til I swap in the lower mileage engine/transmission/transfer case from the donor I bought, and get the front and rear diffs swapped. Then I will tackle the coil over conversion.
I have a '01 suburban with barndoors that I'm doing a sort of canyon carver type thing with and you're videos have been a tremendous help in keeping the truck going. I also have an 84 Fiero SE that i am on and off restoring so your Trans-Am vids give me a lot of good insight in working in those older cars. I'm excited to see what you do with both of em. Keep em coming Matt!
I have a Silver 2005 Z71 Tahoe named Gertie with just over 300,000 miles on her. Other then a leaky oil pan gasket and a oil pickup tube o-ring she has not given me one ounce of trouble. I did do the same LED light upgrade you did and I love not worry about changing light bulbs plus I really like the look. I also upgraded the radio, your video on that was very helpful. I love your Tahoe content, thanks for sharing.
I like the stock look. I've been a fan of your journey with this car but I think its going to be more enjoyable getting it back to where it is now. I have a 2004 Sierra Z71 SLT that I'm in the process of putting a 2" lift/level kit on and keeping "Stock ish" but lifting it slightly with larger 17" factory wheels and 285/70R17s. I"m hoping the ride won't suffer too bad. I'm also doing premium shocks, all new bushings, control arms, cv axles, links, EVERYTHING. I bought refurbished 17" factory GMC wheels to replace my beat up looking stock 16" wheels and I'll do the brake upgrades also. I've really appreciated your channel for ideas. Today I pulled the differential while I had everythign apart and took that to get overhauled - and extracted 2 broken exhaust studs from the drivers side with my welder. Fun times! Soon my grandads old truck will be riding on all new suspension, upgraded factory 17s that look new, new tires, new exhaust manifolds, new steering and new front differential. I'm excited. Its a Montana truck so it has NO rust. Spending about 7K on this project (my labor, mostly rock auto sourced parts) sounded better than 70K on a new truck.
put a level on my truck too wish i would have put a lift kit on my truck
I finally got the oil pump and pick-up tube changed in mine. So far, it was well worth it. I'm looking to add some Escalade and Danali features to complete the build. One thing about these models is that unless it's stock, there are no two alike.
Great to hear your rationalization on this. I've come around to the same revelation for my 04 Suburban Z71. Picked up some sweet 2023 Silverado 20" rims so I could put 2019+ brakes on it. After evaluating how much it would change the ride with a leveling kit and larger tires I decided to keep it stock with OEM rims/tires and GMT900 brakes. It works and runs great as-is for a vacation vehicle.
Matt this is sad… that build was awesome
Edit: Matt are you trolling us??? That top roof rack center bar is silver where it was black before when it was modded I’m also seeing other things out of place…
You bought another Tahoe didn’t you????? 😂
Don’t worry, I’ve been in the same boat, when I had my ‘03 Tahoe, started out stock, had gotten 20x10 wheels with 305/50/20 tires, looked really good on stock suspension. Then had a leveling kit, rode like a dump truck. Removed that, then installed a 6” Zone lift, ran it for 1.5 years and hated it because it was my daily driver as well. Actually salvaged parts to return the truck to stock height with my 20x10s for a more street look and had it tuned, it was the best then! Still regret having ever sold it.
I ended up going this route because of your videos on those coilovers, they worked well on my lowered yukon, it handles far better than before
Glad they worked out for you. For sure the way to go when lowering!
From the limited amount of time I drove my 05 Denali with the factory air/electric shocks, it rides really nice. Now after dailying an 03 Tahoe it is sooo wishy washy, huge body roll on the bumpy roads I drive. The Denali was very planted and super smooth up the same rough road.
Sadly replacements for the OEM air shocks (shocks themselves) are like $400+ each, not including the sensors and whatever else is needed.
Those coil overs are what dreams are made of when it comes to Tahoe suspension. It’s the only thing I (or my buddy) didn’t do to any of my modified Tahoes. The torsion bar suspension rides so rough…even in stock form.
I haven't seen one of your videos in a while and when I saw the thumbnail with the stock Tahoe I thought you bought another one or you were doing a before and after comparison. I've followed Tahiti's build since the first video when you bought it and I'm still looking forward to what you have in store for Tahiti. It's been amazing seeing the transformation from a stock Tahoe not unlike one you see everyday to one that stands out
Oh! Can I buy your coilovers!?
Yes love the stock look. I had torsion bar suspension on old Datsun that were perfect. The ones in my 2004 Tahoe LT also I believe are perfect. My Tahoe is 2 wheel drive.
It came with the GM RPO code ZW7 premium smooth ride package with self-contained, self-leveling Nivomat shock.
But I have compared to other Tahoes and this package of shocks are great for towing also. I can put a huge boat on the back and it only sags 1/2- inch ! and yet rides smooth and good enough to drive sporty. I have tried other shocks but just went back to the stock (extreme smooth ride package) they are made by Sachs in Germany. There are no air pumps or electrical ride leveling but it rides better than those expensive systems.
I have an 03 Denali that we’ve had since brand new. We leveled the ride height not by cranking the torsion keys but by lowering the back end with different springs. It rides just like stock with air ride suspension but looks level.
What did you set your front height to? I’m going through pretty much the same thing as you. I want to ditch the 33s and go back to stock sized tires or maybe a 285/65/17 since I want to keep my wider wheels. I’m also considering getting those eibach springs you had to reverse level mine. I keep going back to that video of yours and it looked really good with the back dropped just a hair.
Great decision. Looks better stock 👍
Just a question Matt....I have an 03 Suburban, one of the upgrades I want to do is a cold air intake. If I do this, will I have to upgrade the computer software like my stepdaughter had to do with her explorer....
About to do a front end suspension rebuild on my 2000 Silverado it currently has torsion bars and I’m on the fence. I’m fine with the ride quality but since we have to rebuild the front end, how was the ride with the coilovers?
Hey Matt when your doing the headlights I did it on my 04, try spraymax 2k clear on the headlights, here’s the steps I did and no joke if your decent at spray clear from a can which you are I think the headlights look as good as new and will last forever if maintained. There’s a lot of steps but I think it’s well worth it.
P320 (50 percent faster sanding) (only needed if the factory clear is holding on, wipe with iso after each sand to see if you’ve missed anything)
P600 (start here if the clear is all gone and the headlight is yellow)
P800 (refine 600 grit scratches)
P1000 (refine 800 grit scratches)
P1500 (refine 1000 grit scratches for a super smooth surface to the touch)
P2000 (refine the 1500 grit scratches for a super smooth not super orange peely finish)
As someone who has both lifted (leveled) and lowered their Tahoe, here is my experience with both setups. I went from stock to installing a leveling kit with 3" lift in front via keys and a 1" coil spacer in back. Then put 20x12's wrapped in 33" Mickey Thompsons. They stuck out about 3" from the fenders and did get me pulled over once and I got away with a warning. After putting a little over 80k miles on the tires one finally got a flat. It was going to cost me close to $2500 to replace the tires with taxes and install fees. I decided against it because I didn't want to shell out that kind of money and still have all the problems with the setup. Primarily the bad gas mileage, getting eyeballed by cops, and the rig always being dirty from the tires throwing crud all over the car. So I put my factory stuff back on. The vehicle was immediately nicer to drive. The steering was smoother and my fuel economy went up noticeably. I kept it this way for 3-4 months before pondering the idea of lowering it instead and going with a bigger rim. I ended getting some 22x9 snowflakes and some 305/45/22 Falken Ziex tires (still close to 33") and a lowering kit with 2/3 inch keys for the front and a 4 inch drop rear coil. Everything cost me under $2k. It took me less than an hour to drop the rig. I do like the way it looks but there are issues going this route as well. The first is the rear. Choosing a 305 wide tire caused me to get a slight rub with the tire touching the inner fender liner. I installed some 1/4" spacers and that's no longer an issue. The front had a couple of issues. The first is the camber as even with the keys cranked all the way up there's still noticeable toe-in. The upper control arms had to be adjusted all the way outward to correct this. There are aftermarket control arms with additional camber settings but I didn't need this. Another issue is that because of the aftermarket torsion keys, your control arms are rotated upwards compressing your shocks and compromising your dampening. This is why it's suggested that if you lower the front, to use spindles as this will keep the factory geometry. I have since acquired spindles but now I'm looking for factory torsion keys.
The TLDR is changing it from factory introduces problems.
Yeah, you modified it and were chasing all the issues that came up and basically played enginner trying to make it right.
Love your Tahiti videos. Have an 04 Denali with the air ride. It's a cushy ride in a good way. I'm also riding on stock 17's. I'm a fan of the stock trucks. It's a little bouncy with the stock 17's cause the of sidewall height, but not worth upgrading to 18`s imo. Was looking at 20's but the newer 275/60r20's are a bit bigger and 275/55r20's are a little harder to find takeoffs cheap. So I'm sticking with the 17's.
Nice, also do you still have the astra? Ive always liked the Saturn Astras.
I had a level kit and spacers for my wheels for my 07 tahoe, i went back to stock just because my lifters took a crap and now here goes the dod delete, shes a daily as well.. now i may sell it for an older tahoe or burb
Is it not worth bec i am thinking to change my torsion bar do u advise me to do that or keep them?
Me watching all your previous videos and then coming to this one.... 👁👄👁 ...... uhhh... what??
Hell ya man, turbo z71, with OEM looks is gonna be bad ass
My future plans for my 4wd cat-eye Avalanche is to have full air bag suspension front and rear. I've been looking at the Atomic Fab coil over kit except with an air bag set up instead of the coil/shock package. I haven't found any other options for air bagging 4wd/awd NBS trucks. Would you happen to know of a better option?
Tahiti looks beautiful stock, brother
Hi, I have a 2000 Yukon XL for daily use. Can you recommend some shock absorbers so that it doesn't move a lot?
Bilstein 5100's.
i like the idea of a super comfortable cushy ride, thats why these trucks are so nice to drive and just be in. do the torsion bars give a softer ride than those coilovers?
Its very close to stock but I wouldn’t say softer. If I wasn’t looking into air suspension I would have just left them in.
Hello Matt
Quick question for you I’ve got a 2004 Yukon and XLT and put about $3000 into the engine and we’re talking belts idler tensioner new reservoir for windshield wipers all those type of good things. What do you think about replacing all four shots and possibly the springs there’s no way that that I can find out on the springs whether they original or not I just want your thoughts on I’ve got 161,000 miles on mine , should I change the shocks out front and back and the springs at the same time? That’s my question
G'afternoon from Boise ID. I recently had an 01' Suburban XLT Tahoe stolen. So for the time being I picked up a 98' S10 Blazer LS 4 Dr 4wd for $700. I gave it a tune-up, got a cold air intake kit for it, converted to floor shift with a shifter and cable from an 01' Trailblazer and they recently did away with the emissions laws here in Idaho. So I'll be deleting the cat and putting dual exhaust on it soon. Overall it's turning out to be a pretty sharp rig 🙃
sorry if i missed it, when reverting to "stock," what did/are you doing about the front shocks? Even more so similar-ish build with my 99 Silverado daily driver (your brake upgrade video started it all).
I put the stock red ac delcos back in for now. If the air suspension plan works out they’ll be getting swapped out as well.
Have you had a rear main seal leak issue on your truck?
What did you do with the coil overs? My torsion bars rusted out I need coil overs now?
Bruh, you put it back to stock essentially but hey, it looks good, though
I have a 2005 Tahoe. When I brake, I get a pulsing like it has warped rotors or the ABS is trying to work and when I brake hard, the ABS will kick in even on dry summer pavement. The rotors are pretty new, but I did do some towing this summer. It's as if the ABS is out of adjustment and wants to kick in when it really isn't needed. Any ideas?
Go watch the 1A Auto video on the ABS speed sensors. They get dirty and rusty and need to be removed and cleaned. My new issue is this. When I start the engine when cold, I hear a sound like maybe a bearing that is falling apart from the right rear of the engine or around the transmission. It gets better after a couple of minutes. I have plenty of fresh synthetic oil in it. I just came back from a 3-hour highway drive and had no problems. Any ideas?
I have a 2006 Chevy Tahoe Z71 in Bermuda blue everything you've done I've done besides the steering wheel and the phone charger.... long tube headers.... Flowmaster 50..... Texas speed stage 1 cam.... cold air intake.... TBSS intake.... Cat delete.... tuned.... Oversized trans cooler..... Corvette servo.... 4.10 gear change.... 2015 Wheels.... 2007 front brakes.... Roof rack delete.... Cadillac d pillars.... 6 high mod all LEDs..... Helper bags.... This was the last thing I was thinking about doing so it's not worth for the daily driver
You got everything for sale?
I didn't know TSP had a stage 1 cam for the trucks, I got a stage 2 low lift truck cam because I thought it was the smallest one (had a lifter go back and wiped a cam lobe). Along with fresh 799 heads, I lost a little low end but picked up plenty of power above 2k.
Stage 1 Texas speed low lift cam
This makes me sad Matt 😢 i really like the suspension setup you had I was waiting to get a set for my 03 Yukon
Question, I have a 2003 tahoe 4x4, my friend lifted with the torsion screws and it was hard when I was driving on bumps, do you know what's the stock height or on those screws what's suppose to be at? Thanks
Cranking keys from stock position gives you about an inch. So max out the keys all the way up and measure from the ground, straight up past the center of the wheel, to the edge of the fender. Then loosen the torsion screws until it drops down one inch. That's about stock height.
Im mad that you went the whole oppsite direction on this, sleeper route. Was more impressed with the fully modified direction
Great video thanks for the info.
I haven't watched yet but I removed mine from my c6. they rode badly and made funny nosies. so I went back to stock with a nice set up koni and rode much better and have better traction than anything I could get out of the vikings
I think the Escalade had air shocks All the way around.
I miss the trail boss wheels
I'm glad you didn't keep it how it was just to appease the channel. At the end of the day it's your car and if you're not happy with it then you should be able to change it.
Man that's wild I thought you were really diggin the coil overs! Didn't you have to cut off/ trim some off the front bracketry to install these initially?vv did you have to weld any of those brackets back on, that you cut off, to go back to torsion bars?
Yea I just welded on the corners of the bump-stop that I cut off
@@lsXmatt ah gotchaa. I wondered what all was involved in going back lol... I got an 04 twin got yours, that I'm slowly getting there... same color and all... unfortunately the bumpers and under rot is getting worse..... currently installed truck norris cam and threw on some 23' Tahoe 22 inch take offs lol. Keep the content coming man... love the vids!
Looks better stock. Sleepers are the best.
Sleeper build>off-road
Man I loved that build, but not my car so you do you
Is it possible to install such a system on a 2003 Nissan Xterra?
Can I buy the old coil overs off you?
I'm trying to put them into a 3000gt that's sitting on a tahoe frame
I would love to hear about a shock upgrade and how that affects the braking performance or feel over stock shocks and torsion keys.
6:40
@@JMASON-qy7kiThat's not what I mean. He put stock shocks on. I'm talking about upgraded shocks over stock shocks. Not the coil over system vs torsion syatem.
You gotta do what works for you…but I’ve lost a lot of interest in the project.
Agreed.
Ready to watch u boost her 😤
Do what I’m doing with my 2002 Duramax, make it modern but clean. Kinda like a restomod with more modern headlights, taillights, and creature comforts
Are those not fully adjustable??? You can probably tune a softer than stock ride.
🤦♂️
Sleeper. Totally approve.
I totally understand the comfort aspect, but the HD hood was pretty damn cool :(
Hey bud I’m about to do this same conversion how do you like it so far?
Any plans for the truck, or just a stock daily? If you’re just looking for a more comfortable ride at stock height I don’t think it’s worth it. If the trucks lifted or you want better handling then I’d recommend👍
Bud you have the best vids and I know Tahiti’s your daily but bro she looks sad now 😞
Great video, Sad you removed the 2500 front..
Currently trying to decide I go with those coilovers on my truck
Hey Matt at the end of your coilover video you say they don't work on 4wd/4x4 ok I get that but you also say they don't work on 2wd so I'm confused isn't your tahoe 2wd witch is the same as rear wheel drive some what do they work on then
It's a Z71 so it's 4wd
@bmathers21
I know it's a 4wd drive I was just calling out his mistake so he could edit or correct it some how
@@aceace8588 ahh gotcha. I also heard the other day that they did make 2wd Z71s so I might have been talking out my ass anyway 😂
I've come to realize that these Tahoes are as popular to the younger generations as the k5s were to the older generations
That thing looked so much better before why would you go back to stock?
If i get this 05 tahoe im looking at i want to get these shocks
Are you still daily driving the Opel Astra?
Yea on and off with the Tahoe
What is Tahiti?
Selling those shocks?
Nice way to end the video 😂
Unless I missed it you didn't mention anything about removing the front upgraded brakes. It looks like they fit over the stock Z71 wheels after all. In the video where you did the upgrade you mentioned you weren't sure they would fit since you where using a bigger wheel. I noticed this because I'm about to put 2017 Yukon XL Denali calipers on my 2006 Tahoe Z71 with the stock 17" Z71 wheels. I test fitted them and they fit just fine under the 17" wheel. There is alot of misleading info on the web out there but I can't validate they fit.
Yea they ended up fitting great. I’m not trying to put the whole truck back to stock, just visual stuff. If I wasn’t looking into air suspension then I would have left the coil overs too.
Do some more 0-60 with long tubes
Mines about ready for the shtf.
I always thought the Tahoe looked great stock. Still do.
Wwhhyyy!!!! But OK, BOOST IT BROTHER.
Do you still have the coilover kit? I’d purchase if you’d like to sell
Anti dive Geometry is why the brakes feel like they work harder.
Would love to buy your coilovers and Trailboss wheels/tires
Are you in ny?
@@lsXmatt No, I am sure you could find someone local. I am in NC.
Perhaps I could buy the coilovers? Less shipping hassle
Matt, If you decide to sell let me know bud.
I have a 2004 Tahoe with 120.000 here in La.
Imo it was better lifted and the way before stock
I bought the rough country shocks and didn't like them
Its a tahoe not a race car or truck!
Sould consider looking into what it would take to do a z55 conversion like the escalades and denalis had. Electronic controlled dampening on all four corners (basically magnaride before it was a thing) with air leveling in the rear. Granted, i do think straight air suspension would be incredible, but it will undoubtedly require a boarderline obscene amount of fabrication. Z55 would probably be like the electric fan conversion, where its like stock+

I never liked all that lifted crap. I was wondering why you would go that route. I would keep the black wheels. get some Michelin AS4 pilot sport all season tires. Go back to coil overs with a conservative drop and go all urethane with some nice sway bars. All that will greatly enhance a 700HP turbo daily.
Lifting is for off road applications...but there are mall crawlers out there thats for sure
wow this sucks i was really looking Forward to this build
Yeah it’s your truck but not a fan of going back to stock.
Have you every thought about doing autocross with it? If so lime rock park in CT Sept 16th I have all the details to sign up and I can send them via Instagram. I got a buddy of mine in a Buick roadmaster LS swapped going and his two buddies with their suburbans and including mine on the track. We do have some other vehicles like BMWs, wrxs and etc coming out as well. Anything is welcome. Maybe we can see what power your putting down and etc.
I signed up for it over by me. They do it in the met life stadium parking lot. I was going to bring the Camaro or Astra but never got a chance to. One day I will.
@@lsXmatt what day is the the one over by you and how much?
Do you want to sell the coil overs I have the conversion brackets I just need the coil overs been having trouble sizing the correct ones If you’ve already sold them or don’t want to sell them if you could just give me the sizing you bought on those Viking SHOCKS that would help me so much ! Like I said, I’ll buy them right away if you want to sell. Thanks.
Hate getting old 😒
You wanna sell the coilovers
Stock is Latin for.... keep standard. did you know 😜
Sell me your coil overs for my 05 Yukon
Looks like you’re ready to sell it and move on
