Pro Cyclist VS...His Dad!? | Road Bike Takes On E Bike, But Who Is Faster?
VloĆŸit
- Äas pĆidĂĄn 29. 06. 2024
- Despite being the father of an ex professional cyclist, George Lowsley-Williams, also known as Hank's dad, hasn't ridden a bike in over 20 years! Hank decided it was time for this to change, and invited his old man out on one of his training loops so they could ride together for the first time. Luckily for George, he had assistance in the form of an Orbea E-Bike so he could give Hank a run for his money on the hills!

Next Dad/Hank challenge: Off-road. Hank on a MTB, Dad in a tank.
I'd watch that
I would absolutely watch the shit out of that.
Hank vs Tank
Lmao Great idea đ
Sounds like a tank museum GCN crossover Scimitar vs Orca or something to that effect
Petition to get hanks dad in the GCN gear and become a presenter
I think he would like E GMBN better
... Have him back for commuter/city stuff. And give him faster gear and challenges/todo's.
Wesley Alth so EGCN for electric road cycling
and get brother-in-law Nigel to co-present with George !
I totally agree and Iâm in favor, this was one of their most epic
"The gravel is a bit gravely"
ah yes, every 60 seconds in Africa, a minute passes. đ
@@sdm000 ah yes, the floor is made out of floor
Thereâs a man and his son just having fun on their bikes. They clearly love and respect each other. Is there anything else more innocent and wholesome? Delightful.
This is the most wholesome thing Iâve ever seen! Petition to have Jamesâ Dad on more videos
Absolutely brilliant stuff. Hilarious, when George started explaining the Canyon after extensively stating he hasn't been on a bike for 25 years. Cracked me up.
And he even did a pretty great job at it! I was thinking, damn he's a natural at presenting :D
Yeah thats actually super gold
Asgarnian yes he did !
@@Asgarniane that would be his army officer training ,helped him there.
@@aaa111912 Probably because of the many number of times he had to explain how a tank works to his Juniors.
Fair play. He might have had a motor but he still pedalled for 35k when he hadn't rode in 25 years. More bank and dad vids please
His bike will be restricted to 15.5 mph as well, which is ridiculous tbh.
I ride a ebike because I have two dodgy knees and a heart problem, without the extra power the motor gives I'd be limited to 4-5 miles and struggle with slight hills (the one closest to me that I'd really struggle with is about 4%). But with the ebike I can handle 25 miles, possibly a bit further on the lower power settings (levels 1 & 2 out of 4), only hopping up the power setting for hills.
Ebikes do have a part to play in the future of cycling, especially in helping people switch from car/bus to cycle commuting and e-mountain bikes can help people explore some of the more rougher trails. Sure some purists might not like them but each too their own, cycling can cover a very broad spread.
I'm a purist, even though you've put on the table a point on ebikes, keep strong bro.
@Roberto GarcĂa anything that gets people outside moving...ebikes included, is a WIN in my book.
Good for you đ there's a lot of hate towards e-bikes, but you go to show exactly why they should exist. Enjoy your riding đ
Good luck. Great that you can keep on cycling. E bikes are the future of transport (even though I donât ride one) Just have to get that message out there.
@jriden why is it bad for the 'sport'? People ride a bike for all sorts of reasons and this gives the opportunity to those who may suffer from injuries or confidence issues which make riding a non ebike difficult. The more people we get our of their cars and riding a bike the better.
After listening to the very short story about your dad I think he is a legend
ain't all dads are legends?
@@clipsaieditnijl518 my dad is the one who got me into riding. We go almost everyday and do like 35 km in our area
My dad bought milk last day.. Still waiting for him
What fun. I never got to do this with my dad. For those of you that still have the chance, do stuff like this with your dad or kids.
Well said. Hank, treasure and save this video. I was welling up watching this.
Absolutely. My Dad died when I was little. Must go for a ride with the kids
My dad luckily is relatively fit and has a nice bike. I love riding with him and cherish every opportunity. COVID has put a damper on our rides but I'm hoping we can resume together once things settle down. (I travel for work so even though I try to be as careful as possible, it's still a risk I'm not willing to expose him to)
I was planning to do a bicycle trip together, but now he can't ride because of a eye condition :(
Michael Jolley I totally agree with you. My Dad passed away 5 years ago, I never got to do this with him.
Make the most of what you have people, as the people who mean the most to you wonât be around forever.
until I saw this video I never really realised what life could have been like were I to have had a Dad that had the slightest interest in his children. The friendship that you and your Dad share is something extraordinary and special
I see all GCN videos and this is one of the most honest and fun videos they made. GCN needs to produce more challenges like this.
To be fair, the "longest ride around the house" is still probably about 20k.
đđđ
Is that including or excluding outbuildings?
On such a courtyard they should be jousting (possibly on bikes)
Ooch
Peter Parahuz you use BMX bikes for jousting
i'm not even sure why. but this is easily my favourite gcn video ever!
made me really really happy to see hank and his truly beautiful dad.
thank you for this hank ( and dad )
At 55 the most joyous thing about this is it makes me realise I will be able to ride until I am 80 with eBikes getting better and better. When I can no longer power myself ... I will be able to get some assistance. Awesome.
I see very old people riding normal bikes on a regular basis... Just gotta keep yourself fit.
I'm 78 years old and bought a Katu 30e 2 weeks ago...hoping I can ride 'tl I'm_______
E-trike. Better than a walker!
"A Turnip dressed in Granny stockings" FINALLY someone else noticed! (What a legend!) This has been my favourite GCN video in ages!
Hanks dad is a complete utter legend I'm guessing this was the big plan for hankđđđđ
He's no Brother in Law Nigel...
He should do the voiceovers for formal stuff from GCN
So awesomeđđ»đđ»đđ»đđ» Hanks dad is the legend!! Such a wonderful and entertaining video!!
âCheers, Dadâ. Find myself thinking of my father and wishing we could have cycled together when he was alive.
Me too.
Same here.
Me too đą
Same thought crossed my mind.
100% correct!
Loved this video. It is great having all the experts and latest news of cycling, but this one is very human. A father and son having a great time on bikes. Wonderful
Absolutely joyous.
Hank Snr. should be in a series of his own... zero to hero.
Shame I can't ride with my own Dad, dearly departed.
I know that exact feeling. Prior to my dad's passing, we had plans to get him a bike and cycle across the Black Mountains in California. :(
Hank senior is a natural GCN presenter.
Hankâs manic laugh when he pulled out of the junction at the bottom of the climb had me in stitches đđđ
Good to hear another laugh like Matt's!
What a great sport your dad is Hank. With his boat shoes and weekend short pants (those lily white legs were certainly eye catching), he rocked the 20 inch wheeled bike look. Good on Dad!
I demand a rematch. On the next race, give dad his wing mirrors and disable the speed limiter.
I don't think it's something that can be disabled. I'm pretty sure that's just the fastest the motor can assist with. If you go faster then that, the motor will disengage to prevent it from burning out.
There are certainly some e-road bike models that are assisted up to a higher speed then this and I would like to watch the episode again with one of those being used.
@@only1sn1not1taken You can disable it with an appropriate dongle costing around ÂŁ150 (would invalidate your warranty). The Bosch motor is restricted to 15.5mph (250 watts continuous) to comply with UK law. It is quite capable of assistance to maybe 25mph. In the US the assistance limit is 20mph (class 1 I think) using the same Bosch motors. The 15.5mph assistance is arbitary and quite low and when you hit the assistance limit the bike is much more difficult to pedal than a standard road bike. I would suggest the bike used in the vid if de-restrcted even with 'dad' riding would have possibly won even though its a shopping commuter bike and the race bike being much faster on the flats and downhill due to the gearing. Even as in the video, its great that someone relatively unfit can enjoy a challenging ride that they would have little chance of completing (certainly not enjoying) without the motor assistance.
@@martinlong8739 This puts a lot of strain on the bearings in the motor. So it's quite probable that you best to replace them, which is not easy on Bosch motors.
@@jean-cyrillkreuer6410 Hello there, replacing Bosch bearings is not an easy job as you know and requires a press (to remove the bearings) and the ability to disassemble the motor to access them. However bearing failure on Bosch motors is invariably caused by water getting into the motor casings. It is highly unlikely to be caused by raising an arbitrary restriction of 15.5mph. The very same Bosch motors are sold in the US with a 20mph restriction as class 1 ebikes. See this Bosch page listing the very same motors sold with assist to 15.5mph in the UK being sold with assist to 20mph in the US www.bosch-ebike.com/us/products/drive-units/ They are good motors they can easily handle it and more. Thanks for your reply Jean-Cyrill
@@martinlong8739 Derestricted, it counts as an electric motorcycle under UK law. It would need to be registered and taxed and possibly have type approval. The rider would need to wear a motorcycle helmet. Not gonna happen on GCN.
This was by far the most enjoyable GCN vid I've seen in years. George is pure gold and Hank is solid as well (as always). Loved seeing how chuffed Hank was with riding with his dad and it was impressive to see how well Georgie did on the ride and in front of the camera. Perhaps Lloydy should be looking over his shoulder as he may be bumped as GCN's senior statesman.
Glad you enjoyed it! We had a great time making this one!
"That's not lycra dad, that's shorts and a polo shirt"đ
Like seeing folk enjoying things and Donât know who the biggest kid is.......great video chaps đ
Same inital sentiment. This is one of the best.of all time episodes
One of those "Top Gear" magic of television punctures there!
To be in proper "Top Gear" fashion though, the father should have been shown cruising past the son with the basket on the front of the bike containing a cooler of iced down beer while drinking a beer and not pedaling or exerting any effort.
Hank's dad would make a perfect series to show you are never too old to pick cycling! And show how much better we would feel from picking cycling/ a sport in later years in life. Well done he did amazing and was an enjoyable video đ
Hank's dad is clearly wearing illegal socks.

Goes with the shoes...
When I visit my dad in Brazil, we run together. I slow down. He's 82. We've done a lot of sports together. Unfortunately, I don't have a bike there to cycle with him, but once in a while we can borrow one. My dad is a beast on his bike!
Hank's dad a total sport! I'd like to have a ride and a beer with him.
My dad's 66 and fit as a fiddle. He runs and goes skiing, so I'm planning to get my spare bike going and take him for a 25-30k ride. He hasn't been doing much bicycling the last 30 years or so, but he'd be alright.
I love GCN, but this was my favorite! As a dad to two 20-somethings that ride, I can relate. I can still keep up without a motor, but I am certain I'll need a motor in 10 years! THANK YOU...tremendously entertaining!
I'm planning a cyclescheme ebike a year before I retire!
or maybe your kids can have fun riding with you somewhat slower. I love riding with daddy and wouldn't want him to get a chunky electrc thingy
That was totally awesome. Good on him for giving it a go and doing it in an outstanding manner. That hill attack was downright vicious. No competitive spirit there at all. Must run in the family. Been trying to talk my wife into an e bike. She watched this and may now give it a go. Thanks and have a good day, Al
Maybe the best GCN vid ever?
âDadâ is a legend...he needs to be a part time presenter, with Top Gear style challenges!
A ride around the house is probably further than some cycle at the weekend!
"Turnip dressed up in granny stockings" ... "Jimbo"'s dad is a straight up legend!!
I finally live in an area where my kids can ride with me and I canât wait!
All my best memories of growing up are from doing things with my parents like hiking, fishing, road trips, golf and just spending time together.
These are the things your kids will remember and cherish, not the toys or games you buy them.
So get out, do something with you kids and make some memories!
Looks like you guys tried to make it your best video ever.
The quality is amazing, loved it, keep up the good work.
I think the chief source of my amusement was Hankâs own amusement. Love the laugh.
lost my dad a few years back; he was a avid cyclist and got me into racing at 9 and still ride a love to ride. This video helped me remember him and the shenanigans we got into on the bike.Thank you Hank, Dad and GCN.
This was wonderful to see. I've been riding with my son for 18 years (He'll be 21 in March).
in and around Vancouver and have had a blast doing it. An amazing way to spend time with your loved ones. :-)
This is probably one of the best things I've seen on this channel! Really cute and fun idea! Plus Hanks dad ha sone hell of a personality!
Cycling version of Jack and Michael Whitehall
What, really rich?
@@patientswim6888 and very middle class
I have to say, the videos with the brother-in-law (Conor), dad (Hank), and wife and son (Dan) are some of my favorites. You all have lovely families and make cycling seem very accessible.
I could already tell in the unicycle video that George and Hank would be pure gold together in a GCN video and man was I right! Fantastic content and unlike Jack Whitehall and his dad the humor was always light hearted and full of affection between dad and son. Even before the banter at the end I knew GCN should do a (Bike) Travels with My Dad series. Make it so!
Watched this video from beginning to end with a big smile on my face. Hank's dad is a legend! Best video ever!
I think this is my favorite GCN video in several years of watching! I was grinning ear-to-ear the whole time!
âïž
This is a great video, and thanks for raising the profile of ebikes. My brother is about 500% fitter than me but we both love to cycle, so when I visited him in California I rented an ebike which meant we could ride together without him getting frustrated or me dying :)
Hank, first and foremost you are lucky man to have such a good sport of a dad. I have been looking forward for this video and have to say thanks for this GCN. Thoroughly good fun. I'm with Hanks dad. I don't wish to look like " a turnip dressed up in granny stockings" either.
Absolutely excellent video in every way-great quality, brilliant editing, hilariously funny and in places quite touching. GCN at itâs best.
This is amazing, well done đđđ. More of hank and his dad please!
You have me remembering the rides my father took me on when I was very young, teaching me how to safely ride on the road. Enjoy the opportunities you have to ride with your father. Great video, guys.
This is one of my favorite GCN videos of all time. Really enjoyable to watch and Hank and his dad seem to have a great relationship
Emotional, Entertaining, Down to earth... Best Video I have ever seen GCN!!
Huge respect for Hank's Dad!! We need him on the channel.. Please .. Please!!
Loved this. What a great relationship they clearly have. George was a terrific sport
Literally one of the top 10 videos youâve ever done team. Pulling in the family member, doing something fun and different. Shoot dad was finally honest about the bike in the video âits uglyâ, âfeeling all the bumpsâ, etc. Great to follow along on a full ride with them too! Well done GCN team and dad!
What a great Vid. Love Hanks dad. Having lost my old man 3 years ago, I'd give anything to go for a ride with him. Treasure the time you all have with your parents. Make great memories like this.
Well this is the most heartwarming video I've seen for a while, loved it
Love it! What a Legend Hankâs Dad is!
The relationship Hank and his Dad have is AWESOME! I am all smiles hearing Hank giggle as he leaves his dad at the intersection lol. I love it!! thanks Sincerely a Mountain Biker ( been considering a road bike you guys make it look sooooooooooooooooo fun!!! )
Love the genuine smiles in this video. Hank's dad was great.
My dad is one of the reasons i ride my bike, this is nice to see them having fun
Great video. This is when it's evident that electric bikes really do have their place đ
I have never smiled or laughed so much watching a GCN video before! So good to watch.
This is amazing. Clearly the best GCN vid I've ever seen.
Fantastic video lads! Kept it real and what a legend is Hankâs dad!!! Looking forward to the vineyards and restaurants video!
You already lost from the start, he was a tank commander !!
Lovely video, I had enjoy it every second.
One of the best videos I've seen in a long time. Made me smile all the way through, great job!
Awesome Hank and Hank's Dad. Just awesome! So funny and heart warming.
One of the best GCN episodes ever. Thank you George and Hank - you two had me smiling the entire time.
Brilliant video, what a legend, and what a fab relationship Hank has with his dad. One of the best GCN videos in a long time.
Great video! Thanks to Hank and Dad, and all production members. Really enjoyed that.
That was brilliant. Great stuff. đ
One of your best episodes!! :)
This made me smile the whole time - great video and your dad is a great sport for going and doing it with you - your very fortunate Hank, thanks for the video
Wanted to leave a comment just to say how wonderful this video was, truly genuine and Hank's father is an absolute gem AND a badass!
This was a bloody good watch. The crowd want more!
litteraly the best gcn vid i've ever seen xD
I watched this entire video with a big smile on my face. You have a special relationship with your dad Hank. Just like I had with mine. I wish he was here so I could do something similar. Thank you GCN for making me remember many happy moments I spent with my dad while I was watching this video.
Certainly one of the very best GCNs ever! Your dad is a legend and NEEDS to feature on GCN more often. đđ
Why did no one commented on that massive burn Hank's dad delivered right at the beginning, when he commented on Hank and Lycra?
Whoa! Javier in the wild! I also thought this vid was great. Would be fun to see them riding up Mt Rokko or out west.
Lol, in the wild, a rare sight. Yes, it would be!
Awesome video! Would love to see more of Hank and Tank

Super video - hank is so likeable and apple doesnât fall far from the tree. Well done hanks dad
Hi GCN!!! I love your videos and Hank youâre my favourite person in GCN.
I just absolutely loved this video. Great for encouraging anyone at all into the joy of cycling, plus the whole relationship aspect was lovely to see as well. Just delightful.
You know we need this kind of content itâs so Awesome. Thanks for another great video and watch out your dads pretty good presenter. Thanks again
Danâs son can already take him. And I reckon Siâs dad, Matt Stephens, probably rides more than he does...
Matt is Si's father???? OMG!!! That sounds like a beginning of a beautiful soap opera!
Wait what?! For real???đ đ đ
That's kinda funny đ
@@IraklyShanidze00X nah I think thatâs just OCs head cannon. Matt was 13 when Si was born
The Williams men know how to present. If there was no limiter on the e bike, it could have been even more fun.
I've learned so many things over the years watching GCN videos but I never would've thought the most important lesson I'd get from them wouldn't have anything to do with bikes and everything to do with spending time with your dad. Spend time with your dads people.
That was my favorite video from GCN. What a fun experience for Hank and his dad. Thatâs a memory that will last fo ever! I hope you got some great footage that was edited out! Thanks for sharing.
What a brilliant video!! Fair play the George riding that bike that distance. I know what will be on his Christmas list as I reckon he will keep it up!!
My friend stayed with her parents during the lockdown here and came back converted to E-bikes (and probably puffer vests, they go hand in hand for the older set), and her mum keeps suggesting she buys one. At $4,000 minimum, maybe not, but she loves it as wants one too!
I agree with your dad ref wing mirrors. I have switched from motor bikes to bicycles and the old neck isn't as flexible as it used to be
You can get mirrors for your bike. Helmet, wrist or handlebar mounted. I have one on my commuter that plugs into the bar end. They're great if you've got young kids as well, because you can then keep an eye on them from in front or behind.
This was great !! One of the best shows on GCN yet. Keep up the great work.
This was such a nice and warming video, awesome to see something different. Keep it up. Hank's dad needs to make a return! Kudos to the videographers too, they've really stepped it up lately.
"The older you get the less you want to get your leg over"
Cracking video, Hanks dad relentlessly coming up behind him made me think the terminator was chasing him.
This was such a great video! Loved to see the interaction between James and his dad. Very entertaining.. good clean fun!
Absolutely perfect message! Anyone can ride a bike. Great to see the relationship the two of you have. We need more positivity like this right now.
