- Is this the best gravel racing course ever made? I absolutely think so. And in this cycling video I breakdown my gravel race of the rock cobbler 2023. I show you from a POV view point the entire race course and my commentary on how it went down.
Gravel racing in America has exploded in popularity and so many new events are popping up every year. This is the 10th running of the rock cobbler in Bakersfield California. And in my opinion, this is hands-down, the absolute best event in California if not the entire country.
This course was so dynamic and had something for everyone. Regardless of your skill set, fitness, or bike choice, this course in Bakersfield had something for you.

Yeah, and that was quite a nice house. Until now I have seen only the insane dudes riding urban downhill going through houses and through buildings (for example min 1:08 in this video: czcams.com/video/yjP6mTjTVxQ/video.html)

This video was full of actual natural carnage. I kind of miss the days of Vegan excuses like "So, I forgot all of my food and money". Awesome vid as usual!
This was such a great ride. That said, who was that 🤡 who came into that hot and at that angle and crashed that other guy out? That dude should be banned
To me, watching the video, it was not at all obvious to slow down. Everyone was going in too hot. They should have been warning the riders. That was entirely predictable.
@@hobbs2005 In my opinion the course was not properly marked. hard right, bunnyhop onto gravel after a fast decent with about 250 people supertucking and onlything on the road some tiny pink markers. recipe for disaster if you ask me

I wish the UCI gravel races would have a course set up like this.
But that would be fun haha, UCI is usually no fun allowed.
uci gravel events have been a thing for like a year, I'm sure they'll improve
@@hgiusdfajgfds Nah. I've read some of the qualifier gravel series like UCI Philippines was good. But then they went and gave the road teams qualified entry for the championship. UCI is never going to do a proper high stakes gravel race because then the pampered roadies won't show. Or their teams won't let them participate.
@@cjohnson3836 We'll just have to wait and see if it will go more and more in the direction of "good manners" and become boring, or if it will go in a more adventurous direction like in this video, in a sense "in line with the original gravel racing culture".

To tell the truth, I don't like gravel, but this video was really nice to watch. For the first time I watched an experience between mountain and road cycling. The most interesting cycling sports video I have watched recently.

I've ridden through a library once on a family bike event - it just feels so different and really quite special.
This entire race looks fantastic but...I'm too slow and I live in the UK. Apart from those two nuggets I'd be there.

You did great! I crashed ON THE WAY to the venue. After I realized my shoulder was not going to stop popping in and out--I quit at the Pebbler turn-off. Watching makes me a little bummed on my DNF...but you're right it's a great vibe and there's really no part of the course that doesn't demand focus. Cheers!

Fun video to watch; I'm glad to see you survived and enjoyed the experience. I grew up and raced in Bako while in my 20s and used to ride a lot of those same trails in the 90s. We used to call that fun canyon section Mr. Toads Wild Ride:). The East Bakersfield hills were beautiful then, and many still look the same. I wanted to cry last year coming across all the trash in the hills South of Hart Park. Sam Ames, the guy behind this, used to organize the best cyclocross courses in Hart Park and was a nationally-ranked crosser; I'm glad to see that he's still involved in planning great local events. If you ever want to get some great road routes in, just ask the locals at Action Sports or elsewhere; there are so many great road climbing routes in the foothills and beyond leaving from Bako. Their October century called the Spooktacular is an annual trek back home to reminisce about all the great rides I've done and friends that I've made in this area.
Sitting here trying to think of something kind and congratulatory to say that hasn't already been said. Your progression in both producing the footage and your gains on the bike is so fun to watch. Man, I don't need to say anything, look at the comment section. You are excelling at this in so many ways. Humble, grounded, yet confidently self aware of your progession in the sport in a way that people can sit back a say "good for you bro" and not, "great, another douche canoe cyclist just chasing KOM's". From the biz to the training, from the adventures to the family...you are putting it all together in a well written story that I look forward to very much. Good for you bro, good for you👍

Im sorry man, taking ketones does not prevent concussions. At best, there's cursory evidence that they can help recovery post concussion/TBI. Brain injuries are not something to play with, if you're cross eyed after a head strike its time to pull out...

Great video, brought back memories from last Saturday. My right pedal hit that same rock or one near it, ripped my foot out of the pedal and my hamstring cramped for a second. My buddy behind me was like “ you almost ate shit”. I now realize it could have been a lot worse. I am glad your helmet did its job and you were ok. I am also looking forward to next year.

Hey man, I just want to say that you inspire me a lot. I was at this race and it’s cool to watch this video of someone better and faster than me going on the same course. You’ve said in past videos that you don’t consider yourself elite or even and athlete, but it’s all relative and you’re elite to me. Glad you survived that crash, too. That was scary!

Awesome video! Thanks! It sounds like you tried the right techniques for climbing in stiff-soled shoes. Duck walking and side walking are how mountain climbers do it in their stiff-soled boots. If your future plans include more steep hike-a-bikes, your technique may improve with a little practice.

I am guessing the chain had jumped so the narrow/wide slots on the chain were misaligned with the chainring.
