The Hardest Ride: Can We Make The Time Cut?! | We Made Our Own Epic Giro Stage
Vložit

- The route of the 2021 Giro D'Italia is littered with the brutal mountains of the Apennines, the Pyrenees, and the Alps. Although the Queen's stage itself was shortened, the profile alone is truly epic. Feeling inspired, Conor and Hank decided to honour the race by creating their own Queen's stage here in the UK. With over 200km and over 5000m of elevation on the menu, this was going to be one brutal day in the saddle. Will they make the time cut? Will they even make it to the finish?! You'll have to watch to find out...

Would you ride your own Queen's stage? Let us know in the comments below!
NOPE.
Some years ago we created 'Amstel Gold im Muldental'. Some 270km and 5500m...
No, I like going fast on the flats. Hills don't agree with me
Well... Not even the pros 🤣
ye
Love it, even Hank calls his dad 'Hanks Dad'
I was very confused by this haha. I’m relatively new to the channel as well. I was like....is this guy hank or not?!?
That had me laughing out loud 😅
@@Jaclynne36 Just wait until you hear Si call Hank "James" and you'll wonder if Hank is actually twins!
@@jaydesimone4297 for the longest time I though they were two different guys that look weirdly alike
@@Wuthahn_ I actually asked if they were twins. GCN gave my comment a heart but didn't clarify...it was in the early virus days and Hank videos showed him back and forth with and without facial hair depending on shooting and release, which made it really confusing!
Connor, Hank and Hank's Dad...doesn't get any more entertaining than that group...
Please more videos with those three :)
Really great video!
Add Blake from GMBN as Hank and Blake together is so fun to watch. Those 2 know how to enjoy themselves so much it's infectious. Throw in some Hanks Dad and Connor to keep them slightly in line, turn on the camera and let them go... 🤔 😉 😅
@@itarry4 Amen to that...
Need's Connor's brother in law!
@evan king Missing brother-in-law Nigel!
Brilliant video and Hank’s Dad is a classy DS: comedy when he needed to be, but properly supportive when Conor was struggling.
The pro peloton will be calling...
Hank: “I didn’t even see the route”
You gotta love how Hank is just up for anything.
Hank's dad really has a epic voice.
They should put this in the tour of Britain
So this video is basically about Hank's dad and some dudes riding their bikes very slowly 🤔
😂
Lets see your go on route via strava. We’ll see who is slow… 😜
Hank's dad would have been definitely faster on the eBike ... with some spare batteries :)
@@jevgeniardassov it wasn't a challenge or an insult...
@@jevgeniardassov I reckon he tried to imply some sarcastic English humour here.
Usually when you guys post a video of an epic ride. I'm like. Damn, I want to do that. With this one, not so much...
Not in that rain
You didn't fail. That was tougher than the Giro Queen's stage.
Far steeper gradients and no long down hills like in the Giro.
You did about 15 climbs more than I could do and I think I am quite fit.
Well done to Connor and Hank, ably supported by Hank's dad.
the cold and wet certainly didn't help
Good point about the steep, narrow uphill tracks - there's not much rest on the way down when you have to be on your mettle and on your brakes the whole way.
Yet the 3 big climbs and the upndown in between, accounting for more than 3000 meters of climb where at a median altitude of around 1750- 1800 meters, thus you should account for the less oxygen in the air... At sea level you have 20.9% pp of oxygen, at 300 meters you have a 20.1% equivalent pp . At 1800m you go down to 16.7% equivalent pp. Thus the 3 major climb, and more than half of the elevation gain of the tappa would have had 17% less oxygen pressure. The reality is even worst as there's a pressure loss in the air to blood transfer, and it's almost a constant independent from altitude, it's around 1.6 to 1.9 % of pp equivalent, thus lowering the useful oxygen from 20.1 to (assuming a good 1.6) 18.5% at 300 m, and from 16.7 to 15.1% increasing the difference to 18.4%.
Now, in a racing world that accounts for every half percentage of gain in friction, aerodynamics, weight... I do believe that having more than 18% less useful oxygen does make a difference, especially since in a climb the air resistance is a small component up a hill, the drag reduction from thinner air is nothing compared to the body having less fuel to work with. Thus, to get comparable effort to the real deal you'd need 800m of elevation more, or something along this line.
This type of weather reminds me of a bicycle tour myself and a friend did back in the 80s in England.
We stopped to ask a lady if she could fill our water bottles. I asked her why there were no garden taps like we have back in Australia so we could fill our own bottles, her reply was 'why would you need garden taps?, it rains'
The intro for Hanks dad was just brilliant, made me giggle and I’ve been ill in hospital 🏥 for a week . So thanks guys 🙏
When the shoes hit the road, I went, "Yeeeeees!"
God, Hank has epic energy to pull anything thrown at him, and Hank's Dad is a real sport as well.
Cheers to Hank's Dad..
You literally rode past my house, awesome to see my local roads on the channel! You'll have to come back, there are some nastier climbs you missed!!
I'm not really getting a "let's do this again"-vibe from the boys tho
They missed the climb from hunter's inn up to Trentishoe. That's a wall.
Hank: "Why is it raining, its May?"
Everyone else: "its the UK mate, rain is what we do!"
Great effort! I'd like to see a series where Hank and Conor train specifically for this ride for a couple months, and then give it another shot.
Love the way Hanks dad was struggling to keep a straight face
Hank’s dad is awesome as always. Hank is a tank as always. Killer idea of a ride Conor
Hank calling his own dad "Hank's dad" is hilarious. :D
i saw the shoes and exclaimed yeaaaah, loving how hank's dad is become part of the gcn family, love him
When the tank commander speaks you have to listen.😁😁 What an epic ride. Brilliant really. Thanks for a great video, Al
This is so good. It really does highlight how murderous the Giro is, even for excellent riders.
I was watching this on my TV, but when I saw Hank's Dad I had to pull out my phone just to enjoy the comments appreciating him. Always good to see him 🍻 p.s. I always love that even when talking to Hank, Connor calls him "Hank's Dad"
James is so much better when he calms down a bit, he was brilliant. Poor Conor suffered but the absolute start was Hank's Dad
big love for hanks dad, i love him
Hank's dad= STAR of the show
How crazy (or in love with cycling, or maybe both...) am I if this video makes me want to join you guys to suffer all the way through this epic ride ?
Other subject: you guys should try to make a video "Hank's Dad VS Brother in law Nigel" or something like that :D
Cheers from France !
huge thumbs up ! WELL DONE GUYS - a brutal day for sure - the entire GCN team do a great job and are such an asset to UK cycling - no doubt you have inspired MANY so KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK
What a brutal ride in miserable weather. Connor and Hank are brilliant and Hank’s dad is always there for support. Great video
Great effort!
I must say. It's great of you guys to show us you didn't complete challenges. It's nice to know other cyclists (well better cyclists) have their days off. I'm glad it's not always sunshine and butterflies on this channel, but pain and suffering as well!
Though, of course I would rather see you complete the challenges :)
My thoughts exactly. It’s not like we fail, it’s more like we haven’t succeeded yet. Good to see way better cyclists than myself push hard enough to find their edge and still love the process, not just the finish line.
thanks connor, hank, and hank's dad. it's an epic ride. i can now feel what the athletes in giro are feeling as well. i am literally paper buoying on my seat as you were climbing up the hills.
Love this type of content. You watch enough GCN and you start to feel like you know the presenters and it’s cool to see you guys leave nothing on the table.
Of all the amazing videos GCN has put out over the years, this is possibly my favourite. Conor and Hank thanks for the brutal honesty and the inspirational effort. The next time I am on, what I consider a tough ride, I shall remember this. Oh and Hanks Dad, classic as ever!
That was the most amazing and inspirational videos I've seen from GCN. Thank you!
That was epic to watch! You guys did amazing! 👏🏻🙌👏🏻🙌 And Bravo Hank’s dad for his debut as DS! Fantastic job looking after them! 👍👍👍
Well done guys a great effort in terrible conditions and well done to Hanks dad for for his support, must have been a long day for him watching you suffer on the steep hills in the poring rain!
Always happy to see Hank’s dad. Good job guys! I can imagine ridding that long in the cold rainy weather.
You guys blow my mind. Wonderful video, amazing effort.
Wow, that route was brutal! Climb after climb after climb in the cold and the wet. A true sufferfest. Truly an epic ride - not a great ride or nice ride - but an epic ride. Thanks for the video. This is GCN at its very best.
When I was summering-schooling abroad at Aberdeen Law School in 2015 I got hit with weather like that (but without all the climbing). I sure found it hard to keep moving when I was cold, wet, and miserable, so hand salute to Conor and James for pushing as hard as they did.
Hope they include this route for tour of Britain hank's dad the main man totally awesome 👌
Epic. I am seriously impressed, gentlemen. As always, thanks much for sharing.
Steve
Best GCN video I have seen for a while, well done lads!
Epic rides videos are best/epic videos of GCN. Cycling is sport of pain. Respect to Your heart Conor and Hank
Loved this! And it was lovely seeing Hank's dad again.
WOW what a difficult course to set up for yourselves, just an amazing effort to see how hard you guys worked the hills. Big Whoot whoot to you two and Hanks Dad was just the right guy fir the job. Well Done! And no I would not like to ride that route.
Made my day; Tough, adventurous, amiable and humble, these men personify the spirit of GCN. Hoo-Rah!
Excellent video! I never get tired of Hank’s dad!
Awe inspiring, that was tough just watching. Well done.
I love the concept and execution. Brilliant.
Connor breaks wind better than anybody! Oh wait, that didn't come out right. So cool to see "Hank's Dad" in a video again.
Amazing effort guys. Those hills are brutal. Some are tough even walking up! When I saw the route on Strava I knew something momentous was afoot. I wasn’t disappointed. Chapeau to all 🏆
After driving a lot of those roads when on holiday down there I simply couldn't imagine trying to ride that in one day (and I like hills!). Great effort by Conor & Hank.
You know it's a serious day when Hank isn't riding 55mm deep wheels 😂
When you have to dig deep to have to go shallow
The boys did amazing work, such hard climbs I take my hat off to them, all the GCN presenters are awesome, love this show, love hanks dad
I totally understand having a subscription channel were you can post epic videos, but I sure have missed quality videos on the regular GCN channel. Hopefully there can be more videos like these sprinkled in along with the mirad of "How to clip in" and "The best ways to change gears" videos.
Just started following cycling from here in the States...watching the Giro on GCN+ ...tough ride and well done mates, but what I didn’t hear from Conor was this one representative day is only a small part of the race. I am in awe. Amazing athletes
That’s flipping impressive guys. Well done.
That looked brutal.Chapeau lads.
Kudos for your tremendous effort. Looking forward to your next attempt. 👍👍👍👍
Great video boys! Entertaining for us watching...painful for you guys peddling! Well done!
You guys are awesome. Terrific effort.
Well done lads, amazing effort. You got your warmer weather now, go enjoy it.
WELL DONE! I love the small road you rode on.
Videos like these are amazing, beyond words can describe
Great work. So inspiring.
Well done lads! Seriously well done!
Brutal! Brings back memories of cycle-touring in North Devon on a 20kg mountain bike.
An incredible effort and one you should be proud even if you do currently feel a little disappointed about not finishing. Keep up the good work.
Great ride, lads. Respect for tackling that much brutality. ...That intro of Hank's Dad was classic!
A valiant, commendable effort!
God that looked miserable - the only sunshine was Hanks Dad!
That looked brutal. Well done for getting as far as you did!
Love it guys. I think that this ride could serve you as a benchmark for further training and preparation for another session.
Hank's dad is the best! so supportive and calm. so amazing!!
Can we all appreciate Connor's mental effort and how much of an absolute beast Hank actually is? Tackling every gruesome challenge with a positive attitude and then just steam through it..
Hats off Hank and Conor. What an amazing effort. Hank's Dad with another fine performance.
Really good, well done, this is great stuff one of the best
For play Conor, for a lad that was struggling so early in the spin to keep going with those climbs well done 👏
Best video for years ! Almost re-subscribed 🤣😉
Warriors! Bloody good job lads
I made my own ”via dolorosa” today with +7000m of elevation in a 100km in bright sunshine. It was alright. But another 120 km and in pouring rain hmmm😅🤔Good effort guys and what a great video again. Thanks to Hank’s dad too for being such a great sport👍👏
What a cheer by Hank's Dad!!!
Amazing stuff well done for that effort
Brill video as always, well done guys👍, Hanks Dad rules😎
You guys are bloody legends! Inspired
Everything just gets better with Hank’s dad. 😍
GCN just keeps getting better!
A mahoosive well done to you both. The route needs to be conquered by you all again. Hank's Dad is brilliant as a DS.
That was a great effort. 👍👍👍
I really loved this Episode. I have done my first 200km at last monday. with only 300 m of elevation. I did it in 09:02 hours. I like the Videos here wow! so much inspiration Greetings from germany! And of course i am looking GCN auf Deutsch as well!
Great vid, I've really enjoyed it. :) I was to suggest you should have chosen a better day in terms of the weather, but damn, I forgot It was England.
Impressive well done lads 🚴🏼🚴🏼👍
Fantastic effort guys!
I could almost feel the pain whilst watching.........epic, guys.
Great effort on some really tough roads.
as always great vid really enjoyed it and a creative challenge!
Nice video!! Riding in the rain can be brutal!
Massive respect! Hanks Dad, legend. Great vid 👍
