Ex-Pro Cyclist Vs... His Dad?! Epic Climb Edition

  • Hank’s dad George is back by popular demand, this time for his biggest challenge: a race up Sa Calobra in Mallorca against Hank on a road bike. Having not ridden a bike for over 20 years, the idea of climbing one of the most epic climbs in world cycling is almost absurd. But with Hank’s dad on an e-bike, the result is far from certain. Could this unfit dad actually beat his ex-pro son or will the mountain prove too big a challenge?

I'm 69 and lucky enough to still be able to ride with my 40 years old son. From time to time we go for 80-100km rides, and he's nice to me as much as Hank with his dad, but that makes me proud of both myself and himself. As long as I can still ride on a regular bike I'll be happy to do it this way, even though I reach tops "a bit later" than my son. But that's about sharing these moments, rather than performance. And when my legs will get to the point where it is too hard, I'll get an e-bike and will continue as long as possible. Only one life.

Joel: Spot on. Eventually, even though I could still manage OK on my regular bike on the flat and gentle hills, I decided I wanted more. So, wanting to keep my road bike more or less as it was, for my 90th birthday I treated myself to a very light e-assist add-on kit. Proved to be a great decision which has enabled me to lengthen my rides, and to ride again in hilly areas I had been avoiding. I still get a good workout as plenty of input is needed on the hills and I ride mostly unassisted on the flat - although it is very useful against strong headwinds. Recommend the idea to anybody once the time arrives.

I totally relate to the relationship Hank has with his dad. I am 76 years old and still have that competiveness in me, my 40+ year old son understands that and we enter competitive rides together.
This video reminds me of the time we did Southern Cross MTB/Gravel race in Georgia, USA. A very demanding course. Steve helped me up in many of the steep climbs, just like Hank did and encouraged me all the way to the end. We were the last in the standings and the broom truck was not far behind but also there were tens of DNFs. I felt proud of myself and proud of my son for encouraging me. I can't wait to jump on an ebike and still feel the air on my face and enjoy my son's riding company for as long as I can.

Doing it late in the day with potentially lots of traffic coming back up and with limited/no bike handling expertise, when physically and mentally knackered... @@ollieelgie maybe. I found it a pretty easy descent. Good sight lines and only a few narrow bits. Hank’s dad is an experienced motorcyclist and while it’s not the same there is quite a bit of overlap - braking points, turn in, avoiding target fixation etc.

This video shows that is not about nice bikes, clothes, and other gear. It’s not about fitness and not about the challenge itself. It is about supporting each other, sharing power and empathy and about spending time together.
What did Hank lose? Winning against his struggling father. What did both win? Memories of time spent together, working together, suffering together and overcoming obstacles together one thought he couldn’t overcome. That is pure magic in this video.
Both did very well and earned moments that they will look back to with a smile on their faces. Beautiful.

That has to be one of the most emotional videos I have seen on GCN. My dad died when I was thrteeen years old and I am now 71. Seeing the close interaction between Hank and his dad brought tears to my eyes. Hang on to him Hank and enjoy every moment.

The best GCN video made to date I think. Seeing Hank turn around and help push his dad up the climb was awesome. People bash ebikes but this reason enough for them to be around. Helping people that could do things like this do it. I don't have an ebike and don't plan to get one until it is needed but I am a full supporter of ebikes. Awesome awesome video GCN and well done Hank and George!

To hanks dad... Well done and you should be extremely proud of yourself for tackling that climb, most people would shy away from that kind of physical challenge. I think your an inspiration to the people who need that little bit of help getting off the couch and bettering their health or just spending time with their children doing whatever it is.
To hank... You should be the most proud son out there, to be able to do that with your dad and have that memory to cherish for the rest of your life. I wish I could have done that with my dad, it would have made the greatest memory of my life. Also... It's a good job you turned round to help your dad out and have that bonding experience of a life time... Because if you didn't turn round I was unsubscribing gcn.
Also thank you for your service hanks dad by the sounds of it you were army... I'm a royal navy submariner 🐬👑🐬

Working with accessibility as my career. It is easy to forget that an e-bike is a similar aid as to a screen reader for some who are blind. It enabled people to overcome a challenge and make experiences available to them. So glad to see Hank coaching and helping his dad. I would love to do this with my dad, but he would smoke me on the e-bike. Well done GCN for all these amazing inspiration videos. Just happy to see Hanks dad and Freddie smoke it.

Truly heartwarming video for me. I would have loved to have done something like that with my dad. Sadly, today is 28 years since he passed away. I am now at the age he died. The thought has really spurred me on to become as fit and healthy as I was in my late teens and a national level swimmer.

I’ve just finally mopped up the floor again!! Give us a heads up next time please! 😭😭😭 In all seriousness what an excellent effort from Hank’s Dad (aka the dad we all wished we had!) and what a joy to see the Lowsley Williams’ climb together. Top work guys!
